I could not get into this book at all! I lost my cousin to covid last year and put it down to that and didn’t pick it back up again until recently as before I wasn’t in a good frame of mind but it really isn’t for me unfortunately :(.
Hi, I lost the eARC of this book so I won't be able to review this book. I hope you understand. I really wanted to read it but unfortunately my phone got formatted and I lost the copy.
First, I’ll say that I’m sure there is a fan base for this series. It certainly aspires to be this generation’s “Twilight”. In trying to tick all the popular boxes, this became a bit too scattered and never quite came back together. This lacked the writing quality of others in this niche...reads more like average fan fiction.
I personally was not a fan of this. I got through the first couple of chapters and really just could not bring myself to keep reading. I couldn't really get past the main character's voice. There were times were it seemed like the author completely forgot that she was writing a teenage character and Eila would make observations about her surroundings that just did not fit with her general demeanor and were not in sync with the way she actually spoke with other characters. There also seemed to be a serious fixation on body image, which yes, most teens have, but as a post-teen young adult in a time where the conversations on body image have shifted to more accepting tones, I found myself incredibly uncomfortable just within the first two chapters with her mentions of her own body as well as other peoples' bodies. I did not know when I requested this that it was actually an older book, so that may explain some of the issues I was having with the writing falling into a lot of what are now stereotypical YA tropes, but either way, this one was just not for me.
A pretty predictable plot and standard fare high school tropes, this was okay. The writing overall wasn't bad.
This book isn’t anything revolutionary when it comes to YA and, at times, feels a little outdated, but it was a fun quick read!
Things I Liked:
♥ I absolutely loved the side characters in this book— especially MJ! I love that the side characters stood well alone. They didn’t just feel like they were there to prop up our MC.
♥ This book flew by. It was super fast-paced and intriguing enough to keep me turning the pages.
♥ This was a really light read. I found it quite funny at points and it wasn’t nearly as dark as I was expecting.
Things I Disliked:
♡ In general, the writing style wasn’t my favorite. I didn’t really enjoy Eila’s voice.
♡ This book takes pretty much every YA Paranormal Romance cliche and runs with it, which means it did feel like I’d read a lot of it before.
Overall, this was a fun read but nothing something I would rush to re-read. I would still recommend this for anyone who is looking for a light, easy, paranormal romance that will make you laugh!
I read less and less YA novels these days but Undertow caught my attention and I really liked the story.
I’m honestly tired of perfect looking girls and boys but this was an easy read and gave what I wanted from it. I’m not sure I will read this following books but I just might.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wicked Whale Publishing for my copy,
I'm not sure why I requested a book that was published in 2014, but I did.
I ended up DNF this around 50%. I felt like it had real potential, but the characters were too unbelievable for me. The situations felt forced and awkward. I was initially intrigued by the suspenseful and supernatural plot, but it ended up not working out for me. I couldn't connect with the story.
On the other hand, I have heard a lot of people say they really enjoy this book. So you might wanna give it a try!
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
I'm not entirely sure why this was up on NetGalley, since it's apparently pretty old. But I had never heard of it, so I gave it a shot!
It was a wild ride, for sure. It definitely framed up some of your classic/cliche YA bits, but it was a good time, so I honestly didn't mind.
I guess I'll be reading the rest of the series now!
I absolutely loved this story, and I’m basing that on every single book in this series because I didn’t hesitate to download them all instantly. I got so caught up in them that I don’t remember sleeping much if I’m honest.
I don’t plan on doing a review for each individual book since they all blended into one for me where I got so wrapped up in them, so I’m just going to do the first one and tell you all to continue reading because it’s worth it!
Our story beings with a prologue dated back to Massachusetts, 1951 with the protagonist Elisabeth sneaking down to the docks accepting her fate as she faces down the mysterious Jacob Rysse with her Lunaterra powers. Like most fantasy prologues, it won’t make much sense until you get further into the story, but it’s worth wrapping your head around straight away.
Back to the present day in Massachusetts, we’re introduced to 17 year old Eila, a fantastically written easy to relate too protagonist who is keen to start fresh in her inherited million dollar mansion with her guardian Mae. I really liked Eila, she’s determined, strong and isn’t afraid to back down from anything whilst being an innocent teenage girl who is just looking for a place to fit in and call home. She’s keen to keep her head down and get through school, but ends up being the target of the popular girls with her old money family history and when the new guy Raef shows interest in her. Eila’s innocent disposition is sweet when it comes to Raef, he’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma, keen to spend time with her but doesn’t give away any emotion if he can help it. His secretive nature only draws her closer to him, all the while *SPOILERS* he has put himself in position as her immortal protector without her realising. Their slow burning romance is delightful, they couldn’t be any more incompatible but their connection is just too hard to ignore.
I adored the additional characters in the story, particularly MJ who is just so sweet and happy go lucky when you need a good pick me up. He’ll make you laugh out loud and his desire to keep Eila safe purely for her friendship is endearing, you can’t help but love him and his quirky hero-like ways. Ana is a mystery at first, whilst she likes to put up a shield around herself, she’s a lovely addition to the trio, broken and lonely in the world, she begins to open herself up to Eila in a way you’ll cherish. She’s a strong character with one weakness; Raef’s older brother Kian, with a history between them that will make your heart ache. The unconventional group Eila finds herself in just works, they are all completely different but their determination to keep each other safe is captivating.
The author does a fantastic job at setting the scene, whether you’re waking up in a million dollar Cape Cod estate eating breakfast with light coming through the stain glass window, wandering along the beach surrounded by bonfires whilst gazing up at the stars, or dancing in the ballroom of a Vanderbilt estate in Boston. Conway really knows how to bring the story to life with her writing.
I can tell you the story only gets better throughout the series, you won’t want to put them down.
Different supernatural, what a great change. I was not sure anyone could come up with anything different but this author did. I think the story was not bad for me I was engaged. I kept wanting to see what else this author added to her book to make in so unique. I did enjoy this book quite a bit. I may look into more books from this author, since this is the first book in the series I will consider trying the next one. I hope they keep up the same pace this book did. *This book was given to me for free at my request from NetGalley and I provided this voluntary review.*
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review
I liked this book, but I just felt like it was very similar to every ya book. Nothing really stood out and made me fall in love with it.
This started out good, but the more I read it, the more I felt like I'd read it before. In the end I read some reviews on goodreads and saw that people were comparing it to Twilight and suggesting it had been heavily influenced by Twilight... yes I see it!
Undertow by K. R. Conway
Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy and Teens & YA
Publisher: Wicked Whale Publishing
Publish Date: 14 January 2014
Star Rating: 3.5/5
Undertow tells the story of Eila Walker, an orphaned teenager who mysteriously inherits a house and moves into it with her aunt. From there she has to navigate a new school, the people in it, and eventually a crew of supernatural rejects. The great mystery: who gifted Eila the house, why, and how is the house part of her heritage?
I loved the books cover and I liked how the book began. After this point, the book kept slipping into “Twilight” territory. Though Conway does hold her own and tells a good story, you can tell how influential Twilight is in it. That aside, the book was an easy read and satisfied a craving for YA Fiction I was in the mood for.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Yep, I am hooked just like a fish off the coast of Cape Cod. Teen angst, young love, best friends, and a dash of the supernatural makes this book, this five-part series a must-read. Eila Walker, orphan, high school senior, and nuclear weapon all in one is an awesome main character. To "watch" her deal with the incredible news of her legacy as the descendent of an archangel sent to fight dark archangel and his army is more than any normal and recently located teen should have to deal with. Although having an Adonis for bodyguard does make it easier. Of course, with her luck, this guy, Raef, is a soul thief, the arch-nemesis to Eila's kind, the Lunaterras. The whole motley crew of supernatural makes this book super easy to get sucked in. I read it in one day, unable to put it down only to learn that it is one of five! So be prepared to endure a to!ler coaster ride of new girl emotions as Eila endures crazy cheerleaders, an overwhelming attraction to a 140 year old Mortis, homework, a gypsies, and friends who become family.
The thing that drew me to Undertow when I happened across in on Netgalley was the cover - it drew me in immediately. The cover is simple yet absolutely stunning. This book has a lot of the tropes that you expect to see within this kind of novel, which downgrades it for me a little bit, yet it was a ton of fun!
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Every now and then I feel like reading a little Young Adult fiction so when I saw the cover of this one, I decide to take a chance. I really didn't know what it would be about but I thought maybe Mermaids or something. Nope, not this time. While still a fantasy book, it was more about 2 different races/species/clans, what have you. :) The book starts with the story of Elizabeth...very briefly...and then goes on to her 4th great granddaughter, Eila. Eila lost both of her parents and is living with her aunt when she finds out that someone bought a house and put it in her name. She has no idea who and no idea why...wouldn't you take a mansion in Cape Cod if it were handed to you and you hated where you currently live? She goes to a new school and meets some new friends and even a potential boyfriend... then all sorts of craziness happens and she learns that she is a relative of a kick ass warrior woman and the people that were after her are also after Eila now. I really enjoyed this one. I liked the characters, the description of where they lived and the cars they drove...all of it I was able to easily envision in my head and those make for the best stories.
If you somehow randomly end up inheriting a house from family you never even knew about, it probably is something that is too good to be true. If the case of the main character in this story, she found out this out pretty quickly.
But is also found some new friendships, in-human beings and a sweet new ride.
So if you enjoy novels with immortal beings, witty friends and adventure- this book is for you.
This is a great YA book with strong characters in a paranormal setting, great plot with nice twists and enough action and suspense to keep you flipping pages without noticing time is going by. As the first book in a series it's exellent to introduce us to the main characters Eila, Raef, Ana, MJ and Kian while giving a solid background and setting the stage for their story to continue.
