What the fresh hell did I just read because that was AMAZING!
I knew this book was HOT from the reviews and when my wish was granted I jumped around singing "OMG I GOT IT I GOT IT!"
This book had it all - twists, turns, characters to root for and characters to despise. These people are messed up! But it makes for an awesome story! It was so well written that I could picture this scenic little village town with its cute little knick knack store and a glass house on a hill overlooking the water. It was so detailed.
If you have this in your TBR, read it!!! It comes out June 23! All the stars!
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. Thank you for granting my wish!!!!!!!
REVIEW: The Swap - 4 stars! This book was one of the weirdest, juiciest, most disturbing, most scandalous, most addictive books I’ve read in a WHILE. There’s husband swapping, stalking, obsession, & more all while somehow still giving you these cozy island vibes.
•
Synopsis: Low is an awkward, friendless 17 year old girl. From the moment she lays eyes on the beautiful Freya (an ex social media star, new to the Island & twice Low’s age), the obsession begins. She signs up for Freya’s pottery classes &, after spending days on end in the studio with her, Low starts to feel like she has a special place in Freya’s life. Until Jamie moves to the Island. Jamie & her husband quickly become couple friends with Freya & her husband, causing Low to feel left out (& also really pissing her off). Like Low, Jamie is infatuated with Freya’s beauty & charm. When the couples decide to swap partners one night & Low finds out, the “harmless” fling turns their lives upside down.

Normally I prefer one POV, but the alternating perspectives in this book were PERFECT. Each character brought something totally unique (& disturbing) to the table. Another thing I lovvved was how it felt like the characters were talking TO you (sometimes even saying things like, “but I’ve already told you this,” & “later, people would say I was obsessed”, etc) it just made it extra creepy!

:These characters were super well developed, but I wanted a little more insight into why Low was the way she was. Her feeling like an outcast from her family & peers played a role, but I wanted a bit more background. Same with Freya, I would have loved to read a chapter from her POV!

This is one of those devour-in-one-sitting type books. It comes out June 23rd & y’all HAVE to read it. Thank you @netgalley for providing me an early copy in exchange for my honest review!

Low Morrison lives on an island with her non-traditional family. She's a senior in high school who just doesn't fit in or connect with anyone until she meets Freya. Freya Light is a pottery teacher and former social media influencer who is married to a former pro-hockey player, Max. Freya and Max had an incident in their past that has led them to their life on this island. Freya and Low seem drawn to each other quickly and they open up to one another. Low is mesmerized by Freya and doesn't want to lose any of her time and attention.
Jamie and Brian Vincent moved to the island for a fresh start. Jamie left behind a stressful marketing career to open her own gift shop. Brian writes a series of YA fantasy novels. They are desperately trying to get pregnant because having a baby is their biggest dream. Jamie and Freya become friends quickly and discuss their marriages and views on monogamy. Brian and Jamie have been together since college and are happy but Jamie mentions that she thought she would have dated and had a lot more fun in college before she met Brian.
As the couples begin a friendship, Low starts to feel left out and jealous so she is always watching and trying to figure out a way back in. Then, one fateful night changes everything. When the two couples are high on mushrooms, they make a choice that has major effects long after that night is over. Their actions will have consequences as the five of them are bound together in a twisted web.
This book was great. I read it quickly because I had to see how it would all end. It's not as scary or dark as many of the thrillers I read but there's an element of something being not quite right from the beginning. I'm amazed at all of the characters' fascination with Freya that borders on obsession for some. The characters are very richly detailed and you feel like you want to warn them from making bad decisions. This is a great warning that one decision could alter the whole outcome of your life. Great, quick read that throws in some surprises. Available June 23rd.
This was an enjoyable read and I liked the characters and their backstories. The plot is seemingly simple. Two women, both on the run escaping their current Iives, meet at an airport. They decide to switch identities. The the plane that one was supposed to be on crashes and all on board die. From there their individual stories unfold. The plot is convincing and shows how lives can take unique turns that require people to make choices, often choices that lead to complex lives. Each woman has real danger they are trying to leave behind. There are enough plot twists to keep reading. I found myself reading just one more chapter only to continue much longer.
Wow!!! Amazing story that was completely unputdownable and will make you read all in one sitting. Extremely enjoyable and suspenseful.
In a day when social media is king and people love to portray themselves in a Barbie world, The Swap by Robyn Harding really makes you think twice about the people behind the glamour they want us to believe. A famous couple (Freya and Max) move to a small island off the northwest coast to escape the media surrounding their involvement in a tragic death. To pass the time, Freya begins teaching pottery and befriends Low, an outcast high school student. Soon Jamie and Brian move to town to start anew after several miscarriages and a failed adoption. Freya and Jamie strike up a friendship that threatens Low’s obsession with Freya. Enamored by the celebrity couple, Jamie and Brian decide to join them one evening and partake in some hallucinogenic mushrooms, one thing leads to another and they end up swapping partners. It’s difficult to tell what was real and what was part of the trip, so it’s easier to avoid conversations about the evening. Until they realize the unexpected happened and the ensuing guilt and jealousy begins to tear them all apart. One person watched the whole evening and knows the truth, but is Low’s obsession the real problem or are their other evil forces behind the beautifully crafted facade?
A novel storyline with complex characters, and enough twists and turns to keep you engaged. The story was slow at times, but the author carefully used the transitions to move the story along with frequently inserted action and suspense scenes. I would recommend this book for fans of Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. This review is based on the ARC of @TheSwap provided by @Netgalley
Oh my gosh! Robyn Harding’s latest thriller is a 10! A careful woven tale pulls the reader in from page 1. Rich, flawed characters drive this twisted tale of lust, greed and intrigue on a small Pacific Northwestern island. Get your hands on this one, not to be missed!
This story grabbed me right away, and within a few chapters I'd find myself reading late at night, telling myself that the chapters were short, so I could read one more chapter...then another...then another.
Disturbing story from the start, told from the perspective of all of the main characters leaving the reader to wonder who the bad guy was and what would happen. It doesn't take long to figure out which character of them all is the most messed up (they all are to varying degrees), but I didn't see the end coming.
Very satisfying read, especially under the current circumstances.
In less talented hands, The Swap could have turned into a campy 70's movie about swingers (couples who switch partners for one night). But Robyn Harding adds so much depth and intrigue to the plot the sexual shenanigans become secondary. The Swap is mostly about obsession, jealousy, lies and betrayal. It's a dangerous tango between Low, a gangly and lonely teenager, and Freya, the beautiful and mysterious wife of a former NHL player living on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. Freya and her husband Max moved to the island after a brutal incident on the ice that ended Max's career. Low and her family have lived on the island for years-mostly because of the carefree "anything goes" polyamorous lifetyle common among the residents-including Low's parents. When Low enters Freya's world through a pottery class Freya teaches Low completley falls under Freya's spell. Low believes she and Freya are meant to be together, despite Freya's indifference toward Low. In classic obsessive style, the more Freya pushes Low away, the harder Low tries to ingratiate herself in Freya's life. The Swap is a riveting train wreck-it's impossible to tear yourself away from the pages even though you know the inevitable collision is coming. With short, crisp chapters The Swap is a quick read, but the drama and depravity are embedded in the pages. The Swap is an engrossing look at friendship gone very, very wrong.
What a ride! Harding weaves quite the tale of obsession. Low is a teen girl who is instantly in love with Faye Light, an Insta influencer, who has arrived in the tiny town of Hawking. They begin a friendship, but Faye soon finds a friend her own age and tries to ditch Low. From there things spiral out of control.
I really enjoyed the writing in this fast paced drama. The alternating POV was a little confusing at times when the character name wasn't on the chapter page. My only complaint was with one event near the end of the story involving a baby. I wish there would have been a head's up about violence against an infant. I don't want to give spoilers, but if you are sensitive to this be ware.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
Thank you NetGalley for my arc. This is the 2nd book of Robyn Harding’s I have read. Just like her other book, this on drew me in from the beginning. A very crazy storyline full of twists! Definitely kept me sucked in till the very end.
Talk about a page-turner! I loved the alternating POVs in Robyn Harding's thriller. To be honest, I don't think I truly liked any of the characters which is great! You need everyone to be a little unsympathetic and therefore realistic. I thought her characterization of Low was spot-on for a teen enamored of an older, gorgeous woman. And it was nicely balanced by Jamie's more mature, but no less obsessive, adoration of Freya. They both were possessive of her in very different ways.
I did NOT see the ending coming and that is all I will say about that. Highly recommended to readers of authors like Megan Miranda.
Thanks to Netgalley for the arc to review.
While this is described a thriller and a mystery it doesn't really read like much of either. It is however an extremely well written portrayal of some very believable characters in a situation that escalates over the course of the story. It's told from various perspectives and that makes it all the more interesting. Like I said, it's not full of twists and turns but it does build a bit of tension and the ending is perfect. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review -
Low grows up in a hippy family and doesn't feel like she fits in. She meets Freya a beautiful woman who owns a pottery studio. she signs up for a class and falls under Freya's spell. Then Freya meets Jamie and Low feels alone again. Freya invites Jamie and husband over for a party and after that their lives are changed forever. What happened that night? Where does Low fit in? And then the startling conclusion!
I first read Robyn Harding with her book, The Arrangement, which I loved! IO am thrilled to report that I feel the same was about The Swap! I really enjoyed the multiple POVs and the clean, elegant prose. I really enjoyed the rich, unexpected backstories of each character. Highly recommend!!
What a strange world this island is! Another "read in one sitting" books for me, it was that engaging! I liked the switching of POV and I really thought the book was going in another direction, but I'm glad it went the way it did! I felt for Low and (to a lesser extent) Jamie.
A convoluted and twisty tale of deception and obsession, The Swap is just what I have come to expect from author Robyn Harding.
First off, The Swap has a fantastic cast of characters! On one hand, you have Freya, the gorgeous and charming social media influencer, on the other you have Jamie, the barren wife who only needs a child to feel fulfilled and somewhere in the middle is Low, an awkward weird teenager whose obsession will ultimately lead to murder and betrayal. Interested yet? Read on! When a wild night of magic mushrooms and booze leads to …. Yep, you guessed it, a swap, things begin to spiral out of control, leading to a shocking climax that left me stunned and I must admit, surprised. This is an ending I did not see coming! I had actually already played out what I thought was going to happen in my head, so, yep, surprised!
This is a captivating story that didn’t let up. Fast paced and riveting, filled with dysfunctional relationships and deadly secrets – right to the very end. It is pure unadulterated thrills and suspense and I loved every second of it.
A big thank you to Gallery Books, Robyn Harding, and NetGalley from providing me with a DRC in exchange for my honest review.
Good book! I'll leave the summary to others and just give my thoughts. I at first thought the title is a little misleading because it's only one night. Revised my opinion, though, because that one event set up chain reaction for the story to unfold. Nothing else could have happened without that One Night. Never saw the twists and turns in this book, it was very much like riding a roller coaster while wearing a blindfold! On one hand, there is Thompson's obvious adoration of Low (and her disdain). On the other is Low falling over herself to tend to Freya (and her bored acceptance). Did Low see the irony? I liked that the author gave various povs, so that we could feel each character's struggles. Freya annoyed me,. She's exactly like the popular, pretty girl in middle school who can only be a bff with one girl at a time. She thrives on the adulation and feels threatened when/if her friends pair off. She controls the dynamics of every relationship. I felt for Jamie because I struggled with infertility, too. The characters were believable, and the story line freaky-plausible. I'll be looking for other books by this author.
The Swap by Robyn Harding. Thanks to @net and @gallerybooks for the e-arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When two married couples swap partners during a risqué party, unexpected results ensue.
This book reminded me of Never Have I Ever... well really the main characters were similar. The perfect narcissistic evil woman for the storyline. If it wasn’t for the other redeeming characters, I wouldn’t have been able to stomach it. This was a fun thriller. Not a lot of twists, turns and surprises, but a slow burn with a dramatic and unexpected ending. I definitely recommend this one for thriller fans! It comes out 6/23.
Rounding up from 4.75 stars.
What an amazing ride. The story of two couples (Freya and Max and Jamie and Brian) who, thanks to 'shrooms, swap partners one night. The aftermath is toxic. And intertwined with everyone is Low, a lonely teen with an unhealthy obsession with Freya (which Freya exploits).
The book is expertly paced. Told from all 5 main characters's points of view, in alternating chapters. It's not confusing (the men don't get too many chapters) and Low is the main narrator. Harding captures the different voices perfectly. And the ending -oh, the last couple of chapters - perfection! Nobody is without blame.
