Jujutsu Kaisen is outside was I usually read as far as manga and graphic novels, but I was pleasantly surprised of how much I enjoyed it. The story was interesting and I look forward to reading farther into this series.
I liked the idea of this book but unfortunately I didn't love the writing. The main character wasn't very likeable.
This manga was so weird, but in a good way. I've read a lot of horror manga (and watched even more horror anime), but I don't think I've ever seen one where the main character becomes the type of monster they are fighting.
In this story, Yuji Itadori tries to join his school's Occult Club, but then finds himself eating a cursed relic. Gross, I know. Because of this, his body becomes weirdly possessed by a curse, and he uses the power to hunt down other curses and kill them before they can harm other humans.
There was a lot of action, super cool/gross art, and a cliffhanger ending that left me wanting more. This is definitely a series that I will be continuing!
Thank you to the publisher, Viz Media, for a digital copy via NetGalley.
My thanks to VIZ Media and NetGalley. Jujutsu Kaisen is a fun addition to the shonen genre catalog featuring a great cast of fun and likable characters. The story centers around Yuji Itadori, is your usual high school teenage boy, with the exception of his above average human strength. All the sports clubs want him to join, but instead he chooses to join the schools occult club. Volume one does a great job of introducing the characters while laying the basis of our unlikely hero's story. Left off on one heck of a cliff hanger that is sure to have readers picking up the next volume.
“You’re basically half a curse already”
If this quote doesn’t sum up the entirety of the book and its read-alikes I don’t know what does. Yuji, the main character, turns himself into a curse (basically a monster) by eating flesh and people want him dead. This premise sounds an awful lot like Tokyo Ghoul right? The promise of cannibalism alone wouldn’t stand out too much, but when the reader sees the bloody fights with other curses similarities are drawn. Then I took a closer look at the curse breaker team Yuji is with. For clarification, curse breakers are those who hunt and kill curses using different jujutsu techniques. Yuji is an excitable half-monster who teams up with a powerful boy who seems uninterested in excuses, and a know-it-all girl with short hair who all have the same sadistic supervisor. I laughed a little as I realized that this was another Team 7 - one even better because their ‘Sakura’ was actually useful. It was perfect.
Jujutsu Kaisen has striking similarities to Tokyo Ghoul and Naruto, but it is a story all on its own. It is a story about a boy fighting to live. All he wants to do is protect others and survive. He’s a little oblivious and has to fight monsters in hopes that, in the end, the powers that be don’t kill him. The art for this manga is great and all of the curse monsters feel like they were taken from horror comics. If I had one criticism for this book, it would be that sometimes the story felt a little disjointed, like I was jumping from one story line to the next almost too abruptly. Still, it’s a great manga that I will be recommending to fans of action manga, horror comics, Tokyo Ghoul, Naruto, and Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan.
Thank you to Netgalley for giving me a copy in exchange for an unbiased review. Yuji Itadori discovers a cursed object and is invited to a school for sorcerers where he works with his classmates to save the world from demons. This series has tons of action and is extremely entertaining. The characters are engaging and fun. I will definitely continue the series.
Fantastic and chilling artwork paired with a dark and compelling story? Definitely a win for horror manga fans everywhere. Can't wait for future volumes and to see where this story goes!
This was an interesting take on well loved tropes! We follow a teenager who willingly ends up cursed to save his friends from demons, leading him on a journey as a "chosen one" to battle curses and demons. The art style, at least for the demons, is a mashup of Resident Evil and Spirited Away and was very interesting. I always love seeing anime artists creature their intricate worlds. As much as I usually prefer books to movies, I think this story would translate better in anime form because some of the action scenes became muddled. I'm not sure I'll continue with the manga, but will definitely watch the anime series, as this was a good premise and start to a series.

This one just was okay to me. I was really confused for most of it and it really wasn’t that intriguing to me until the ending.
I wish we would’ve gotten more backstory about demons and curses and how everything came to be. I also wish we could’ve gotten to see more into the characters and who they are besides the fact that they hunt and kill curses and demons.
Overall, this was just an average read and I might read the second volume one day.
2/5 ⭐️
tw: death, death of a loved one, blood, violence, gore.
Lite horror shonen. I can't believe he ate a finger. For fans of Tokyo Ghoul. The monsters were well drawn.
Thank you to Viz Media and Net Galley. I had a hard time actually downloading the copy but I ended up buying it myself. I have really been getting into manga's and graphic novels lately. I will definitely be continuing with this series. I like how even though its a shonen manga that the action part is not too much or thrown at you in every page. It gave me Bleach vibes in the beginning but yet a little different also. The artwork is also great! His attitude towards his dying grandpa kind of frustrated me in the beginning. But I'm sure this is part of the character building part. I do hate being vague but I don't want to repeat giving a summary since I've only read volume 1. But I do recommend and can't wait to read more.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for providing this e-arc!
This manga was unfortunately not for me. I'd recommend this to you if you love One Punch Man, which is another series i didn't enjoy. For lack of a better word, it was too shounen-y for me.
5 stars
This was so freaking good!! I couldn’t stop reading and cannot wait to continue. Yuji had me cracking up and his reactions to eating Sukuna’s fingers were hilarious. This may seriously become a new favorite manga alongside Bleach and Tokyo Ghoul.
This manga is really fast paced and has an interesting plot. I didn't really feel a connection with any of the characters, they haven't redeeming qualities as of yet. The artwork is acceptable but there is a lot of blank space on the pages and many of the panels don't have anything in the background. All in all, not a huge fan and probably won't continue reading further volumes.
This isn't my usual sort of manga. Truth be told, I tend to gravitate towards the goofy, romantic fluffy manga, especially the yaoi. However, I do love a dark storyline like in Black Bird or others along those lines. So, the premise of this caught my attention.
Yuji is great. He's funny, he's dedicated, and his affection for his grandfather won me over. I love his reasonings for doing what he's doing as well as his ability to make me laugh out loud despite being worried he's about to die in three panels.
All of Yuji's companions are great. Megumi and Satoru are great, they balance out Yuji and try to keep him from doing something stupid, even if they can't always stop him. I wasn't sure I was going to like Nobara when they first introduced her, but before long I was in love.
I'm really excited to get my hands on the next volume of this series because I'm really curious to see where they go next. Also, because I'm greedy, I need to know more about all of these characters soon. This is honestly my only issue with manga and graphic novels: the waiting between volumes! *sigh*
Jujutsu Kaisen was fast paced and full of action from the very beginning. The characters were a mix of fun and serious, keeping you on your toes for the duration. I loved the artwork and found it both amusing and disconcerting that some of the curses were so cute!
This book reminds a lot of the beginning of Bleach with maybe a sprinkle of Naruto on top for the teacher-student aspect of it. Readers start by following Yuuji Itadori, a member of the Occult Club, a school club that deals with spirits, demons, and other paranormal things. Or occasionally following Fushiguro who ends up at the school when demons attack. You see, the Occult Club released a curse upon their school via a rotten finger.
During the attack/fight Itadori eats/swallows the finger and as a result, becomes a host to a rather power demon.
All in all, this book is fast paced, full of action, contains a fair bit of humor and leaves readers on a bit of cliffhanger, very shonen style. The art is pretty spectacular, the characters seem alright (need more background and time with them to make a true ruling). So if you really liked the start of Bleach when Ichigo is running around Fighting Hollows, You’ll like this one!
When monsters attack a school a kid eats a cursed object to save them. They are going to execute him, but decide to let him go if he helps find the other cursed objects. The setup does not take long, this book is almost immediately into the action, which I love. I am a big fan of books like this and Jujutsu Kaisen did not disappoint. The monsters are creepy. The art is amazing. The story is fast paced and entertaining. I can't wait to get the rest of this series.

Disclaimer : I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This manga was highly entertaining, I had a blast reading through it. This was definitely a one sitting type of read, The main character is reminiscent of how Naruto from the manga "Naruto" was, he is strong willed, kind and courageous. He values friends above everything, the story really takes off when he eats a cursed object to save his friends from a "demon/yokai/ghost".
I loved the setting even though it started with something in a complete different direction than the one the story took. The way our main character meets the one who will break the curse/expel the demon that is killing his friends, was super interesting, they have this very annoyed with one another relationship which is super entertaining to read about.
Overall, I had a great time and I really don't want to give too much away since there is very little I can say that won't spoil it.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy supernatural reads with elements of ghosts, demons and a lot LOT of ACTION.
I highly recommend it.
Entertaining and fun, but do not expect anything that will blow you away.

If I had died, or I had been the only to live the future wouldn’t be as bright.
There is something to be said about shonen manga. It can be too much at times. Sometimes you’re just not in the mood for constant action or an array of characters you know you’ll never be able to keep up with. When done right however it can blow you away and keep you engaged throughout the entire volume, nonstop battle scenes be damned. This is one such manga and I am so happy that I requested to read it and that I was approved for it.
I had never heard of Jujutsu Kaisen before and when I first started reading I was strongly reminded of the early volumes of Bleach that I devoured voraciously. Those were the days when Ichigo Kurosaki first became a Soul Reaper and spent his days hunting down Hollows.
Jujutsu Kaisen follows Yuuji Itadori a high school student who is also a member of the Occult Club whixh is cool as fuck. Of course at the Occult Club they do the most Occultish thing possible and unseal a talisman which is a rotting finger (metal as fuck) whixh attracts Curses to the school. Curses are creatures that are attracted through negative emotions. Unable to defeat it in his human state Yuuji SWALLOWS the finger and well...he becomes the host of a powerful demon. Due to this he must now become exorcised by Sorcerers. There’s a catch however. Yuuji is still able to retain his human side and seeing this another sorcerer decides to bring Yuuji to Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College to propose a planz That plan is to postpone Yuuji's death until he eats the rest of the demon’s fingers.
And then they kill him. Once and for all.
This was
Wow.
It was so good though.
It’s horror mixed with action mixed with fantasy and I LOVED IT ALL.
There’s also a ton of humor which is necessary for such a heavy topic of demon possession and all.
The side characters are all just as wonderful. I have to admit I hate mangas where the cast is HUGE. It’s so hard to keep track of it all. This is why I stopped reading Bleach. It got so convoluted and I just...could not do it anymore. My attention span isn’t the greatest, okay. This kept me on the edge and yes ended on a cliffhanger which is fine. Leave me wanting more.
There’s also a kick ass female character which yas girl yas. All in all, this is definitely a manga to read if you’re into fantasy/sci-fi/horror. Which as we all know Amanda very much is.
Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC.
Great story, no annoying tropes in this first volume. A reasonable protagonist surrounded by a cast of reasonable supporting characters. Looking forward to seeing where the rest of the story goes.
