I had no prior knowledge of this manga before going in, aside from seeing a few Nezuko cosplays and thinking she looked kind of sweet. In this manga, Tanjiro must learn to slay demons, protect his sister Nezuko, and restore her humanity. It has a pretty dramatic opening, which hooked me in.

I liked the character designs, they're cute and unique, and kind of quirky. And the family relationship between Tanjiro and Nezuko is really sweet, even with the horrible circumstances. The art is appealing to look at as well. It's quite simple most of the time, and the frames aren't too cluttered.

It is quite fast paced, I felt like time was going by super quickly. A lot happens in this first volume! I'm hoping for later volumes that it slows down a bit as I felt like we were skipping over character development and things like that. But it is a fun and easy read. Despite it covering some pretty terrible events (demons that eat humans!), it doesn't feel super dark or depressing which was nice, I enjoyed reading it.

My favourite part was Nezuko shrinking to fit into a basket, that scene was adorable (and funny).

I'll probably keep reading this manga, I'd like to see where the story goes.

Demon Slayer has quickly become one of my favorite Manga of all time. We follow Tangiro who, after a series of misfortune, is left with his sister turned into a demon and the rest of his family slaughtered. This first volume details the road to Tangiro becoming a demon slayer, but the cliffhanger at the end gutted me because I wanted so badly to read on! I have since binged the entire anime and am super invested in the manga. I would recommend it to anyone!

The book had a slow start but picked up quickly when Tanjiro returns home to find his family has been slain, and his sister has been turned into a demon. He begins his journey as a demon-hunter-in-training.

I was hoping that the story would progress a little faster, but it was good anyway.

arc provided by the publisher and netgalley in exchange for an honest review

So, I had zero expectations going into this, all I knew was that there was something to do with demons and demon slayers. That’s still.. all I really know? I wish we would’ve gotten more backstory about the demons and the demon slayers and how all of that came to be.

I wasn’t really blown away by this one, it was a pretty average read. The plot was simple and predictable and the main character didn’t have as much character building as I would have hoped. This also involved a lot more child death that I thought it would contain.

I will say that the ending did leave me intrigued so I might try volume two but I don’t know when that will be.

2/5 ⭐️

tw: child death(it gets pretty detailed at some points), death of parent/loved one, blood, death, violence.

Not for me. Shonen series with lots of battle scenes and some monsters at the end. Pinocchio mask guy was creepy.

One of the best manga of all time. I don't even know where to begin with how to describe my pure obsession with this series. Artwork? Phenomenal. Characters? Incredibly developed with compelling backgrounds, all of them. Anime? Sticks to the manga and is beautifully done. But back to the manga, volume 1.

Tanjiro is a simple older brother to a simple family. He sells charcoal to help make money for his family but even while poor they are happy and love being together. Tanjiro's father has passed so it is just him, his mother, and his younger siblings. Nezuko is closest in age to him and also helps take care of the siblings with his mother while Tanjiro goes down to town to help the people there and sell charcoal. It's on such a day that he is just leaving town when a neighbor notices how dark it has gotten. He begs Tanjiro inside and tells him a tale of demons who sneak in the night and slaughter families. Tanjiro feels bad for the lonely man who tells tales. The next day bright and early he heads home and finds... his entire family has been slaughtered. They are all dead but Nezuko .... and this is where you should stop if you don't want spoilers!

So Nezuko is alive but just barely. Tanjiro puts her on his back and races down the mountain when Nezuko attacks him! What is happening?! He is trying to fight her off and protect her when another person appears. A demon slayer?! He declares Nezuko is a demon and must die but Tanjiro protects her with his last breath before passing out. Just when the man is going to end Nezuko he sees something he's never seen before: Nezuko is not attacking Tanjiro's unconscious body. She's protecting it. Thus begins the journey of letting Nezuko the demon and Tanjiro her brother live, and Tanjiro becoming a demon slayer.

You should read the manga, (I have every hard copy printed) and watch the anime to see the action scenes in ... well, action! This is in my top 5 manga of all time.

Interesting premise. Wasn’t completely hooked but hooked enough to read the second volume. Also can’t wait to check out the anime as well once I get far enough to not be spoiled.

While I have watched the first season of the Demon Slayer anime, I am still impressed with the execution of this manga. The sheer amount of time and information that is covered without the content becoming confusing or boring is amazing.

Demon Slayer, volume 1 covers Tanjiro’s transition from normal farm boy, to full fledged demon slayer.

In this world man-eating demons exist; one of these demons attacks Tanjiro’s family.

This is the story of Tanjiro who is becoming a demon Slayer to protect his sister. We wants revenge and a cure.

I love the teacher. The character is a lot of fun. Once you start reading it is hard to put the book down. The story is well done. Because it is so fast paced the passage of time isn't always clear. It can be hard to tell how long it has been. But it was a lot of fun to read.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review..

I love this story. Tanjiro comes home to find most of his family slaughtered by demons with the exception of his younger sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a demon

Tanjioro's journey takes him to a world he never knew existed and he must fight to attempt to restore Nezuko's humanity..

This has been very popular as of late and after reading volume one of the manga I can see why.
Shonen can be generic in a way. Hero has a problem, hero has to bulk up to solve said problem, many obstacles in the way, etc.
What I love about Demon Slayer is that it is nonstop. The action, gore, and the dialogue is jam packed and the story flows wonderfully. You are immediately drawn into the story and you don’t want it to end because when it does
CLIFFHANGER
and you’re left like me...
sulking on the edge of the bed while morosely sipping a shamrock shake from Mcdonald’s.
What exactly would you do if you came home to find your entire family slaughtered by a pack of demons? Well, everyone besides your younger sister who unbeknownst to you at the time has been infected by demon blood.
This is Tanjiro’s personal hell and the opening to this manga that I am more than excited to dive more into.

Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC.

Tanjiro Kamado is horrified when he arrives home to find his family dead--slayed by demons. His mother, his siblings... all but his younger sister, Nezuko, who is turning into a demon herself. Vowing revenge and desperate for a cure for his sister, Tanjiro is found by a Demon Slayer, who sends him for training to become a Demon Slayer himself.

A fascinating premise with amazing art and dazzling (and, in some cases, horrific) details, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a great manga for fans of Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, and more. I'm interested in seeing Tanjiro continue on his journey as a Demon Slayer, and Nezuko as she continues to resist transforming completely into a demon.

I was excited to read this when I got the chance from Net Galley. I have had the anime recommended to me a few times already. This is my honest review.

In this quick first volume, I haven't seen anything super new or groundbreaking, but it was entertaining. I like the look of it. The character designs are nice. I like what I have seen of the characters so far, but at the same time I don't feel too invested in them.

I'm not quite sure how much I like it yet, but I definitely plan on reading vol 2 and then deciding if it's a series I want to stick with. I think this will be popular for readers who enjoy martial arts manga or action manga with a few small horror elements thrown in.

ARC Copy...how far will go for family and would you be willing to wield a sword to do it? That is what going on the protagonist as he fits...one of the horrifying looking demons-beings to grace the stage!

Thank you NetGalley for this opportunity to read this manga.

An exciting and original leap into the Shonan genre that delivers a grounded story about love and family through the protagonist's quest to save his sister. Tanjiro is part of a new wave of Shonan protagonists who communicate their feelings and show emotions other than angry screams of AHHHH. His sister Nezuko is the deuteragonist but unfortunately, she does not have as many lines as I would like in this volume. However, I enjoyed how her character was presented from the onset. She has experienced trauma that has changed her physically and I like that this is not brushed over and I would enjoy it if her arc focussed on her healing and growing accepting these changes if they are irreversible. The over-sexualisation of female characters is something ever-present in Shonan titles, and although this may also occur later in demon slayer, I have hope that given her depiction so far Nezuko will be portrayed respectfully.

I would have liked the siblings home life to be better established before the inciting event to make the reader feel the shock and horror with the characters. But I think this could be revisited effectively later in flashbacks so it garners a similar effect.

Overall, the Mangaka offers a well-paced introduction to his world. The stakes are set, consequences are seen, and tension is built. I can’t wait to read Volume Two and find out where the siblings' journey will take them next! 🌊

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 1" was alright. Hard to read with the formatting issues and watermarks.

I requested this book from NetGalley when I saw it listed because I have seen frequent adverts for the anime based on this manga and I was interested to know more about it. I really enjoyed the story premise, and the action moved along at a good pace. Tanjiro is a fun character who I imagine will develop well during the series as he improves his powers and seeks to accomplish his goal to save his sister. For me, the story and pacing were great and the characters engaging; however, I wasn't a huge fan of the artwork style. That is why I am giving this one 3.5 stars. I would stress, though, that that is simply my personal preferences in terms of the art. In all other respects, I enjoyed the opening volume of this story.
