My first reaction to this could be summed up in one word, "wow".

I knew nothing about the premise of Promised Neverland before I started reading this. Kids live in an orphanage and for once they are well cared for, fed, loved, educated. So you know it is a trap.

Even knowing this the twist was like a punch to the gut. I love this book and will definitely be picking up the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this first volume of The Promised Neverland. The whimsical art paired excellently with the dark horror tone. I like the three children protagonists and the villains.

This was a complete shock and joy to read.
I’m a huge fan of horror manga but with a name like The Promised Neverland I was expecting a whimsical cutesy manga, I so wasn’t expecting a sci-fi shock fest like this.
I
love
it
I don’t want to spoil the plot
You need to just go ahead and dive into this like I did. You won’t be disappointed at all Instead you’ll be subtly cursing and wondering why demons want to harvest children for whatever reason.

Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC.

I received a copy of this manga from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book which has prompted me to investigatethe next books in the series. It was tense and faced paced, the artwork was lovely. It was a well executed idea for a narrative, and made me think about the place and dominance that humanity generally assumes in the world as 'higher' beings, and the book reflected those ideas well.

The Promised Neverland (Volume 1) by Kaiu Shirai, 185 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL. VIZ Media, 2018. $8.
Language: PG (4 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG13
BUYING ADVISORY: HS - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Even though none of the children at Grace Field House are related, these orphans have made each other family while waiting to be placed in foster homes. As the oldest at age 11, Emma, Norman, and Ray help take care of the younger kids. These three discover the real sinister purpose for the orphanage one night and start planning escape -- not just for them but, impossibly, for all 37 children.
Everything is light and beautiful until Emma and her friends’ discovery, and, from there, I was captivated. I love the contrast between not just in the introduction to the story and the harsh reality uncovered but in how everything continues to look idyllic after the dark secret is known; this juxtaposition makes all the scary things seem even more frightening and unpleasant. Finding a way to get my hands on the next volume is a must. The violence rating is for disturbing themes (not shown in illustrations but discussed) and death (the result is shown in illustrations but not the means).

Emma, Norman, and Ray are the oldest and brightest children housed at the Grace Field House, an orphanage. There they and other children are under the care of a woman they simply call Mom. She teaches them, feeds them well, and cares for them as though they are her own. It's a good life while the kids wait to be adopted. Or is it?

Emma and Norman discover the secret of what happens when a child goes beyond the gate and now, with Ray's help they start planning what they are going to do about it.

Trying not to give anything away, but I really liked Emma and Norman. Ray, meh. While there is a lot of set up going on in this book, and therefore the start is a little slow, the middle picks up, but the end slows down a bit again at the 12 year olds try to figure out how they will be able to execute their plan. This plot line promises more twist and turns to come.

This art is nice enough. Reminds me a little of One Piece when you look how the faces are drawn. The background is not nearly as crowded though.

I honestly can't wait till I can get my hands on the next book! So it looks like I'm off to the library.

Of the manga I've read recently, is one is probably my favorite. It takes itself seriously. No tongue in cheek jokes or sight gags. Instead we've got a complex plot that didn't head the directions I was expecting. I liked the focus on ways to escape, all the stages they need to consider, all the complications to their plan. I can see how this could be a compelling series. A solid read, though a big on the grim side.

*** I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review but honestly I've already read/watched the series :) :) :) ***

If you don't know anything about this series, then prepare yourself, you're in for a "fun" read. This runs down a similar vein of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

The Promised Neverland is a series that looks to be happy and fun! Yay, look, kids playing! As with similar stories, there's a sinister twist that doesn't reveal itself until partway through the beginning chapters. So you're not entirely waiting forever to see what kind of world they actually live in, although you don't really get a look until later on.

If you're a fan of Madoka, you might like this as well. I don't want to spoil it but did enjoy reading this ARC.

I have repeatedly seen this manga series in my bookshop and always considered picking it up but never have. Due to the name, I imagined the story was a twist on a classic - Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland perhaps but, never have I been more glad to have never read a blurb.

This book completely blew me away with the twist to the point where I have instantly ordered the rest of the series.

The most original storytelling in manga in years- The Promised Neverland breaks boundaries, sets a new high water mark for weekly manga with its unbelievable twists and reveals.

Wow. What a fantastic read. I had no idea it would be so gritty based on the cute art. There were even a couple of moments where it struck me as supremely creepy.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the other books and find out what happens to these children.

I picked this title based mainly on the cover, I didn’t want to read too much into the plot before picking it up because I wanted to be surprised...
Let’s just say I wasn’t let down.
It starts off as a story about some adorable kids in an orphanage; all under the age of 12 and what their life is like there. Very cute and light, but it quickly takes a dark turn.
It’s a sci-fi, horror, distopia mash up and I loved the darkness of it all. I feel for those kids and I cannot wait to see the next volume; what will happen to all those kids?

Definitely would recommend to some of my older students who love manga and anime.

I don't read many volumes of horror manga, but when I do it is typically the classics such as Junji Ito. Japan has produced some of the creepiest and most macabre stories in the world, and "The Promised Neverland" was no exception. The plot really pulled me in - I want to know what happens next, even if I find the art style to be mediocre. What a spooky and horrific concept.

This book is so different from what the cover page leads you to believe and I cannot praise it enough. Its left me desperate to carry on reading the series, due to both its interesting storyline, twists and turns in the story, as well as interesting set of protagonists. With the first 'adoption', the storyline takes a rapid turn, making it impossible to put the story down. I would definitely recommend giving this a read!

I often find myself not enjoying manga. I tend to want more from the story or end up just plain confused. Often the chapters feel repetitive or all the good stuff is in the synopsis. This one took just an hour of my time but surprise, surprise, I liked it! It had an intriguing story, I did not find this repetitive, the art was wonderful, it was cute-creepy (which I love), and all around a good time. I immediately picked up the next installment through my library, and it’s also a great quick read! So why not try a quick manga to spice up your March TBR?

What an experience!! I was so hooked reading this, it’s crazy. There’s something about children being in such a riveting and haunting story that makes it 100 times more scarier. I can’t wait to continue on with this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first volume of this manga, and will be recommending it for purchase by our library. I am curious to know what happens to our three main characters and their ‘siblings’. I really enjoyed the way that this manga opened with carefree kids just living their everyday lives in their orphanage home, and suddenly the knowledge that all is not as it seems was suddenly thrust on me.

I'm not sure how many volumes total there are for The Promised Neverland but the first volume is already quite a setup. for the series. This is The Great Escape for the Captain Underpants demographic, because in spite of the dark themes, the book is still very much kid-friendly. Emma, Norman, and Ray are the leaders of the orphanage kids and their planning puts my own organizational skills to shame. An animated series was produced from this title but only has one season; I'll have to keep reading to get to where the anime ends. The story continues to be absolutely gripping and a little bit heartbreaking. (I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

ARc Copy...very good but wow this is going to haunt for a long while! Without giving away to much...the basic premise is doused out after the opening depiction of an idyllic childhood, which makes it even more nightmarish/horrifying in feel when contrasted with the real purpose of the home.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3 Stars

A superb beginning to a chilling mystery that you’ll struggle to put down.

With a structurally intricate plotline that builds tension naturally until the first big reveal, you will breeze through first this volume. Although I don't think the characterisation for the main trio was as strong as it could have been, the building blocks were there for an interesting dynamic. I understood the base conflict that would drive the story for its first arc and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

I read this book as a commentary on the treatment of animals in the food industry and although I’m sure that my feelings on the manga as a whole will develop as I continue reading I think it shows the intricacy of Kaiu Shirai’s storytelling that in only one volume I felt such passion from the writer. They clearly have great intentions for this manga.

Should Read This Book if you Like 💕:
+ Manipulative characters 🦹♂️
+Suspenseful reads 🕵️♂️
+Stories about children that aren’t for children 👶🏼

Trigger Warnings: child death.
