Lizzy, at 36, is forced to rectify the life she built for herself with the legacy her family has left her, and she alone has to decide which matters more. Barbara Davis’ writing is stunning and I felt for Lizzy through and through.
THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS is reminiscent of two of my all time favorites, Sarah Addison Allen's GARDEN SPELLS and Alice Hoffman's PRACTICAL MAGIC, because it's witchy, full of plant magic, and painfully human.
So many thanks to Barbara Davis and Lake Union for the sneak peek!
A beautifully written story about family, love and loss. It is also about lies and secrets and truth. It was a pleasure to read.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS by Barbara Davis is a beautifully-written and enchanting story of family, love, forgiveness and healing. Elzibeth “Lizzy” Moon is now the last living Moon girl in a line of nine generations of women with special healing gifts that have been both a blessing and a curse for her family over the decades. They have always lived on the family’s farm in a small New England community and used their wisdom, kindness and magick to help their neighbors, but when two young girls turn up dead in a pond on the property, the townspeople are quick to accuse Lizzy’s grandmother, Althea of murder. Sick over the tragedy and the baseless allegations against her family, Lizzy flees to New York, vowing never to return. Eight years later, Lizzy is called back to the farm after learning of grandmother’s death. She wants nothing more than to sell everything, settle the estate and get back to her own life. Lizzy soon discovers a journal that Althea left for her and so begins a haunting exploration of her family’s legacy and the long-buried secrets of the ancestors who came before her. I was totally drawn into Lizzy’s heart-wrenching journey to reconcile her past with the present and her hopes for the future. The characters were so wonderfully-portrayed that I felt like I knew them personally and could feel their very emotions. This story held me captive from beginning to end and stayed on my mind long after that. I loved this compelling and magical book and highly recommend it. Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a chance to read an early copy.
I adored this story with the most wonderful and warm characters!!! Beautifully written! Highly highly recommend!,,
A very well written and entertaining book. Well crafted plot and characters. I received an arc from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
A novel with magic and mystery and suspense. Lizzie Moon returns to her family home in a small New England town following the death of her grandma. She wants to sell the family home and get back to her former life. After reading her Grandma's journal, she realizes that things are not always as they seem. A true coming of age story, a return to your roots story. Acceptance and growth. Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book.
Very entertaining novel. Lizzy hasn't been back to her home town for years despite a close relationship with Althea. She rejected her heritage with no regrets. When Althea dies and leaves her the farm and a hand written journal it, it begins a journey to the past and resolves her plans for the future. I would definitely read this author again!
Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "The Last of the Moon Girls" by Barbara Davis, Lake Union Publishing, August 1, 2020.
Barbara Davis, author of "The Last of the Moon Girls" has written a unique, captivating, intriguing and compelling novel. The Genres for this novel are Fiction and Magical Realism, Mystery and Suspense. The timeline for this story is set in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events. The author describes her characters as complicated and complex.
Lizzy Moon has just had a great promotion at her job in the city when she gets a message that her Grandmother Althea has passed away. Lizzy being the last Moon daughter also will inherit the Moon Girl Farm. The last thing Lizzy wants is anything to do with the Moon Girl Farm. Years earlier, two girls had been murdered and Althea Moon was found innocent, but nevertheless blamed by the local community. The Moon women and their daughters were regarded as witches by some people, who were afraid of the herbal medicines and quirky traditions.
The grounds of the farm, as well as the house, and shed need lots of work. If Lizzy wants to sell the land, she will have to fix everything. When Lizzy arrives at the Moon Girl Farm, she sees that a friend of Althea is living there, and also sees that their next-door neighbor Andrew is trying to fix some of the things on her property.
Althea has left Lizzy a special book from each of the Moon girls through history, and a separate book just for Lizzy. Andrew is attracted to Lizzy and the "light" that seems to emanate from her. Lizzy is determined to clear her grandmother's name, never realizing the threats and danger she is putting herself in.
I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of being yourself, and doing what makes your life better. Also mentioned is learning to forgive, giving second chances, believing in yourself, the importance of family, friends, love , hope, and making your own magic. I highly recommend this thought-provoking book.
Each of us comes in to the world with a story to tell." For Lizzy Moon, she thought she knew what her story would be. She'd left her childhood home with all of its memories and heartaches, and had built a new, successful life for herself. When she returns to Moon Girl Farm following the death of her grandmother, old wounds are reopened, but so are the possibilities of a life she never dreamed she could have. This hauntingly beautiful novel transcends genre--it is a mystery, it is magical, it is a story of legacy and reconciliation and home. I was so drawn to Lizzy, enthralled by her story, her doubts, her fears, her dreams; I felt every step of her journey to find herself, to reconcile her past, to follow her heart, and to write her own story, to find her magick. My heart was completely engaged while reading this book, as I went though a myriad of emotions; there were times my heart nearly stopped, times my heart was broken, times my heart was hopeful, times my heart was overflowing with love.
I recently finished reading The Last of the Moon Girls by author Barbara Davis. The books release date is set for August 1, 2020. It’s the story of Lizzy Moon and the 9 generations of women before her that all lived on Moon Girl Farm. These Moon women, who never marry and only give birth to females, are all born with some unique ability or special gift. What I really enjoyed about reading this was that the book included multiple genres. There was magical realism, a mystery involving a double homicide, and a bit of romance too! It made for an interesting read that kept me turning the pages. It was one I hated to see come to an end. I’m really hoping the author considers writing a sequel that tells the story of a future generation. I’d like to thank NetGalley and author Barbara Davis for allowing me the pleasure to read an electronic advance readers copy. This is a book I’ll be recommending to friends and one I plan to buy for my own home library. I give it 5 stars!
The Last of the Moon Girls by Barbara Davis is a must-read! I was totally immersed in the story from the opening paragraph. Lizzy Moon brings the reader into her world and Davis keeps us there with vivid descriptions, real characters and a storyline that keeps us guessing. Lizzy returns to her deceased grandmother's farm to prepare it to sell. She will gather a few personal belongings and list the farm with a realtor. After that, Lizzy plans to hightail it back to New York and never return to the small New Hampshire town again. But past ghosts, a murder that destroyed her family and the return of someone she hoped to never see again throw Lizzy's plans out the window. Maybe the generations of the Moon girls that planted roots on the farm have a stronger hold on Lizzy than she realized.
I usually fly through a book, anxious to see how it ends. I really didn't want The Last of the Moon Girls to end. I would love a sequel but, for now, I plan on reading more by Barbara Davis and can only hope the rest of her books are as good as this one.
I’ve read all of Barbara Davis’s books. The audio version of When Never Comes nursed me as I recovered from my broken wrist in 2018. The Last of Moon Girls, Barbara’s latest, is a brilliantly crafted story. Tight writing is Barbara’s jam, and this book does not disappoint. Not only is the story well plotted, but Ms. Davis’s sentences invoke a rich feel of magic in this charmingly witchy story. The author takes us full circle as her characters explore important memes such as tradition, loyalty, and confronting darkness. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I would give it ten stars if I could.
The Last of the Moon Girls is an enchanting tale of letting go and finding forgiveness. You will fall in love with Althea’s sage advice and her magical Book of Remembrances, and root for Lizzy as she opens up the past to make way for the future. A five-star must read. –
Barbara Davis weaves a wonderful story with characters you quickly embrace, leaving us with a reminder that we all must create our own stories, that they are ours alone. This is a book you'll want to share with others!
I loved this book. I liked the writing style. The Moon girls different gifts were very interesting. The murder was intriguing.
I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
I'm rounding this up to three stars,as I'm struggling to know how properly to rate it.
Whilst it was a pleasant enough read,I felt it was too predictable in many of its plot lines, right from the beginning.
I also spent the whole book wondering why you'd wait for someone to die to decide to clear their name...
I really enjoyed this book...Lizzie Moon returns back to her family home after the death of her grandmother in this coming of age story. Magic mixed with mystery and suspense makes this a really good read. It reminded me of Alice Hoffman because of the magic the women share. I loved that.
This is a very good book I am glad I read!
Thank you NetGalley and thank you to the publisher...I will read this author again.
Not having visited home for too many years, Lizzy Moon is wracked with guilt and reluctantly returns after the death of her grandmother. It’s a family tradition that all Moon women have special gifts, something Lizzy has always denied, especially after seeing the town turn against, and blame her grandmother for the death of teenagers found in their pond. Now Lizzy’s back and with the help of Evvie, her grandmothers best friend, and Andrew Greyson, Lizzy’s childhood neighbor, she’s determined to get to the truth and find out who really murdered those girls so she can clear her grandmothers name. After finding a journal Althea left for her she’s also reconsidering her gifts, and whether to accept them in her life. After all she is a Moon.
Reminiscent of the style of Alice Hoffman and Sarah Addison Allen, this is a book of magical realism and mystery combined.
I received this book "The Last of the Moon Girls" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own. Fun book - I recognized some of the places! I lived near there. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book. Mystical, love, family and mystery!
Sometimes you can go back home. Lizzie returns to her ancestral home after her Grandma dies. There she finds nothing has really changed in the town. She’s determined to find out the truth to what happened years ago .
This book hooked me from page one, kept me turning the pages late lastnight. It had mystery, magic and romance!
I loved it! Thanks to Netgalley for the early copy
