The character Tatsu is overdramatic in the best of ways. The short one-chapter-plotline is great and works better than either a series-wide plot or multiple larger arcs probably would. Tatsu is very relatable and realistic in terms of how much he loves and respects his wife, as well as how organic their marriage feels. Each chapter of this book is either funny, ridiculous (in only the best of ways), or really sweet.

The facial expressions Tatsu makes, made more dramatic by lighting and shadows, makes me laugh every time. The reoccurring side characters are also interesting and have a certain depth to them that makes their continued reappearances delightful.

I love this series so much I bought the first book and pre-ordered all the next ones!

The Way of the Househusband is sweet, slice-of-live story of a man doing his best to be a homemaker to his wife. Unfortunately, before settling down he was a notorious gang lord with a violent reputation and he still gets recognized while out and about doing shopping. Each chapter of the story details a short situation in his day to day life.

I highly recommend this to my fellow married millennial, the story is very sweet and the characters are highly enjoyable.

I loved GTO and thought this new manga might live up to that concept -- former Yakuza going the straight and narrow as a House Husband. The possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately with this story line, I didn't think things were fleshed out enough for a good backstory to develop and for the jokes to build. A few segments (e.e., RoboVac) were clever, but this fell flat for me. It's a great concept but wish it was executed better.

I LOVED THIS MANGA! It was so entertaining I was literally laughing out loud while reading it. This famous yakuza turned househusband is the sweetest person on the planet. He tries so hard to be the best househusband and he has so much pride in his position and it is so cute. I loved how expressive the artwork was, it conveyed each character's personality perfectly. This was honestly just such an entertaining slice of life manga and I really enjoyed it. I read it in 20 minutes and need the next volume now!

So much fun, can totally understand all the hype. Would love to see how the main character went from "the boss" to "house husband". Will definitely be looking forward to future issues.

I absolutely loved this. For no other reason that it was hilarious. You are seeing this man who tore down multiple gangs single handedly without a weapon cooking and cleaning and rushing to sales.

The side characters are added into the story in a way that makes them just add to the comedy. If you’re looking for a quick laugh, I say read this.

A light and comedic read about a man adapting to life as a househusband after a life as a yazuka boss. It's definitely a book that you can spend a relaxing hour or so with on a lazy afternoon.

Funny and fun, this is a simple manga about a former gangster who has turned househusband. Made up of short vignettes, even without a strong overarching plot, at the end of volume one I just want to read more. I look forward to Volume 2.

Thank you to Viz Media via NetGalley for providing me a copy with this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

The Way of the Househusband was one of the funniest manga that I have read in a long time. I actually almost laughed out loud! The storyline is unique and quirky, but it is set up as a series of (mostly) unrelated events, so it is easy to pick up and put down at your pleasure. What a delightfully easy and fun read!

The art work is amazing, while showing the soft side of the Immortal Dragon's wife, the artist is able to keep the immortal dragon looking terrifying in every day life and everything that he does. The story focuses on him trying to be a good house husband so his wife can focus on her career and helping watching his neighbors kid. It's very well put together and some of the shenanigans are hilarious and I loved every minute of this manga! I can't wait to see more and what Oono-sensai has for us. I'm thrilled that Viz brought this manga over to the states.

An ARC of this novel was sent to me by NetGalley for reviewing purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is great! It's easy and fun to read, and it's extremely hilarious. The househusband used to be a powerful member of the yakuza, and now he stays at home while his wife makes money.

This was a short, fun read! A former yakuza (basically means a really powerful gangster) has now left his notorious legacy behind and is now taking on a new daunting mission--the mission of being a househusband! With his wife being a dedicated businesswoman, he is left to take care of the chores like shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc. However, many gang members still recognize him as "the Immortal Dragon." This leads to many funny misunderstandings, the majority of them ending up with the househusband coming out on top! Without spoiling anything, I will say that my favorite part was househusband vs. roomba (read the manga to know what scene I'm referring to!) While I did enjoy this funny, light-hearted manga, it did not strike me as something particularly spectacular, hence the 3-star rating. I'd still recommend reading it though as it is very short and amusing.

The Way of the Househusband is a heartwarming, hilarious story about a former gangster who's set aside his violent ways in order to care for his career-minded wife. Its episodic format reminds me a lot of the Yotsuba series--but instead of a naive little girl this manga stars a man who takes the most mundane things way too seriously. The main character is a stay-at-home husband, choosing to spend his days buying groceries or doing chores. Neighbours are intimidated by his gangster-like appearance and mannerisms, while former gang co-members are baffled by his new lifestyle. No one seems to understand that he's just a doting husband with a heart of gold, trying to put the past behind him, and that's where a lot of the gags come from. The Way of the Househusband is sure to get a smile out of you, if not a few laughs, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good time.

I really enjoyed this series starter. It is funny and engaging without being too serious. I think that both adults and teens can enjoy this one. Manga fans or readers who know about Japanese culture will be interested in the Yakuza component. I also really enjoy the idea of a reformed Yakuza who stays at home to keep a nice house for his career woman wife. I thought it was a nice gender role reversal. This is a great addition to any library collection.

When Yakuza boss The Immortal Tatsu has fallen in love and has quit the gangster life to be a house husband. However, his old life is deeply ingrained in his bones, but that doesn't stop him from being the ultimate house husband. This manga will have you dying from laughter. I recommend it is you enjoy a bit of romance and a lot of comedy.

Hilarious! Not much in the way of plot but there is more than enough personality to make up for that. I love the way it plays with certain stereotypes and I love the wholesomeness to the main couple - they seem like they actually love each other. I dont know if I would purchase this, but I will definitely check it out at the library.

Kousuke Oono’s manga series The Way of the House Husband is almost guaranteed to make you laugh, or at the very least, smile. It’s just ridiculously goofy and charming.

The manga contains several non-sequitur comics that show the day-to-day life of “The Immortal Dragon”, AFTER leaving the yakuza. Now The Immortal Dragon is a househusband who takes his new job just as seriously.

I’ve seen several different chapters from the first volume floating around online where the Internet is already in love with the series. The full volume was even better than expected (even with all the hype!) and I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series as it is translated to English.

I seriously doubt anyone will regret reading this volume, so do yourself a favour and pick it up!

ICYMI: Ridiculous & Wholesome Gag Manga Through and Through.

The Way of the Househusband follows a retired yakuza member most notoriously known as the “Immortal Dragon” who is living out his post-crime career as a devoted and loving house husband. Tatsu lives a life on the edge still as he still manages to find his way into trouble except it is usually at the grocery store trying to catch those sales versus some back alley. The manga follows him managing his household as just your ordinary househusband–one who has walked away from the gangster life to do battle with cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, cooking and that damned Roomba that he can’t seem to figure out. It’s a day in the life of your average househusband—if your average househusband is a legendary yakuza.

Oono’s art makes an impact the first few pages in, his style includes striking art that he dramatizes up well throughout the book. There is also clean lines and panels that really showcase the action. He makes everything from simple household chores to preparing a cute bento lunch for his wife, intense scenes. There’s an attention to detail from a panel showing Tatsu’s yakuza’s tattoos to pockets around the house and random items. The most mundane and ordinary makes for a treat when Tatsu’s extreme facial expressions make their way on page and it’s a riot to read.

The Way of The Househusband is for fans of One-Punch-Man, Gin Tama and dare I say it, Yotsuba. (With a note that while our sweet summer child Yotsuba is basically for all ages: THIS manga is for teens. The Viz website labels it as TEEN PLUS which is in the Age 16+ category. So don’t buy the babies this and blame me, beloved.) Look, one of my favorite parts of this volume is Tatsu grocery shopping with his wife and him asking a worker there where the “White stuff was”–and the grocery store worker immediately stating that they don’t carry THAT. With his intimidating nature and how he’s dressed, it’s implied that she thinks he’s talking about drugs, cocaine, probably. His wife catches on and quickly interjects that they are looking for flour. FOR COOKING. FOR BAKING.

Yes, it is gag manga but it veers into the slice of life genre too, if I really sit down and think about its silly, episodic nature. (Look, Comixiology labels it with the comedy, crime and manga genres.)

When a graphic novel can make me laugh out loud and read the same page again, you know it is a winner. This story was just what I needed! I highly recommend this to manga/graphic novel lovers.
