I'm so glad Viz is translating this one! I've seen the memes around, like I think almost everyone has, and the series definitely lives up to the hype. It's oddly cute, with actually more depth than I thought there'd be. Just a fun little series, can't wait to find the second one and for the translation of the third.

The premise of an ex-Yakuza as a devoted househusband is definitely hilarious, and this translation is fantastic. I think the format of little mini slice-of-life episodes rather than overarching plot works well, but it does leave me feeling like there's no need to continue reading further volumes. I've got the concept. The roomba chapter was perfection, though!

This was adorable. Just a fun, quick little read to brighten up the day. Not much to the storyline that makes me want to continue reading but just fun. I really enjoyed reading this manga.

A former Yakuza legend leaves everything behind to become a house husband. It is a Slice of Life comic where everything is made that much more difficult because he is a former gang member who has quite the reputation. He is called the Immortal Dragon, but really he just wants to go about his day. Each chapter is another mundane task that he is trying to complete with the twist of him being seen as dangerous by those around him. A couple of the stories were confusing, but for the most part I could not stop laughing.

Once, there was a famous yakuza (leader of an organized crime group) who was known simply as "The Immortal Dragon," but after a specific and violent night, he disappeared. No one knows where he went, but we know reader. That's what this manga is about. "The Immortal Dragon" traded in his old life for a new life as a househusband to a successful designer. In his own way, he keeps up the traditions of a housewife. In each story readers are introduced to our main character as he goes about normal duties, but with a twist.

This is considered a "gag manga." Each section starts in a way that the reader is led to believe that he might be murdering someone or destroying evidence or something else. Nope. He's making an Instagram-worthy lunch for his wife or turning on the Roomba. Honestly, it is hilarious to have the juxtaposition of this former gangster as he tackles everyday chores. The neighbors love him. The housewives he interacts with love him. All while looking creepy and ready to commit crime. He does occasionally cross paths with his past which adds even more to the manga. Why is he a househusband? How did he meet his wife? This first volume does not answer that, but I'm hopeful future volumes do.

The art style reminds me of Junji Ito, without the horror. Granted, I have not read any of his works beyond skimming his cat manga, which has a similar feeling to this. The illustrations are detailed and it is solidly a manga aimed at a specific audience. It is not cartoony like some of the other manga I've reviewed in the past. It is specifically for adults and, frankly, aimed at the male readership.

On the other hand, if you like a bit of dark humor, this is your manga. When I read it the first time, I immediately knew readers I could recommend this too. I am very much into it. I need to know why he is a househusband, but I also want to read more "day in the life of this househusband." The humor of this manga is perfectly timed. I was laughing out loud and when I finished it (after bonus stories to boot) I was sad that I didn't have any more volumes to read and review. This is currently one of my favorite titles of 2020. I'm absolutely hoping for an amazing story about his wife if and when that gets explored.

Overall, this manga title is a must have. Viz has been promoting it and it is well worth the read. It offers something a little different with a dose of dark humor.

PS: One of the readers I recommended it to did give me feedback and enjoyed it. This book has an audience among manga readers.

I thought this manga was really cute. I've seen it in bookstores and I keep picking it up and considering it, but I never took the plunge. I appreciate the chance to read it.

It surprised me that the author was a man. The house-spouse duties were so spot on, it was kind of funny. I loved how the main character kept using discount cards at the stores he shopped at. I thought for sure a woman had written this from her own perspective of being the one to do the household cleaning, shopping for groceries, cooking, and babysitting, and had changed the main character to a man for a laugh.

It was also humorous how the main character kept running into old friends and rivals, and how he proved he's a changed man but can still take care of business like he used to when the situation dictates it. I especially enjoyed the chapter written from the cat's and dog's perspectives. I thought that was really accurate, actually! I have had dogs who wound their chains around their houses and gotten stuck, and isn't it just like a cat to be clever enough to see the solution to the problem immediately?

This would probably be something I would reread for the enjoyment of it. But there didn't seem to be a cohesive plot, because it's really just random scenes of doing chores with some comedy thrown in. So I'm just not sure if it's a series I would keep up with or not. I think reading a second volume would help me decide. It's pretty adorable, though, like reading the Sunday paper comics without expecting a complicated story.

Wow.
Seriously, I don't read much comedy since I tend to prefer heavier topics and don't find typical humor to be that funny but...wow. I was really skeptical of this book when I read the synopsis and saw the cover. I wasn't expecting to like it.
It is so worth it. This book will have you in stitches from beginning to end. I literally was sitting here with my stomach crying at me to eat and all I could do was keep turning the page anyway to see what hilarious thing would happen next! There's no real storyline to the book, just a set of adventures in the life of a houusehusband, but it's amusing enough it doesn't matter.

.....Also, how the heck did these two meet? Really looking forward to the backstory on that haha.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book so much! It's about Tatsu, a househusband who lives with his wife and cat and also happens to be ex-yakuza.

Very funny events spring from the most mundane events as Tatsu struggles with a Roomba, grocery shopping, and people who want to kill him.

I had heard about this title from a friend. The situational humor is fantastic.
Once known as "The Immortal Dragon", Tatsu has retired from the Yakima and now leads the life of a househusband. The fish-out-of-water gag is well used here and does not get stale. We get to see the misunderstanding of neighbors, strangers, former subordinates, and others through the manga. The manga also nicely displayed wordless situations that would translate nicely into an anime or live-action series.

This is a hilarious and original concept! A former Yakuza member, Tatsu, settles down, gets married, and becomes a househusband. His wife Miku is adorable and obsessed with a police anime called Policure. They also have a cat. The story follows our househusband as he makes elaborate bento boxes for his wife, cleans the house, battles the Roomba, goes to cooking class, does the shopping, and tries to avoid his former life as a Yakuza. So far it's more slice of life comedy than serious, but I do expect we will get more backstory later. I loved it!

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Okay, this one is just hilarious. If you looking for something to give you a chuckle, maybe a laugh, this might be it.

Yes, it’s mostly because the whole premise is ridiculous, I mean, a lean, mean yakuza becoming a house husband for his wife? I chuckle just thinking about it. This book pretty much takes that joke and applies it to multiple everyday situations. Masa (The Immortal Dragon) does everything with a yukuza face and mindset. Grocery shopping, cooking classes, his wife’s birthday, the Roomba…I'm laughing just thinking about it to be honest.

The art is well done. I love the opening panel with his tattoos visible! Artist has a knack for cars too. There’s pop references in there (whether it’s an purpose or not, I think it is) that made me laugh. And his wife’s birthday…probably the best part of the book!!! This manga is hilarious. Well to me it is…

Definitely recommend it to anyone who likes manga that is primarily humor.

The thing that has always drawn me to manga and anime was how the creators embraced the most ridiculous plots and themes and ran with them.  The Way of the Househusband absolutely delivered on this and then some.
When the legendary Immortal Dragon retires from the yakuza to be a househusband so that his wife can pursue her career as a designer, life gets a little, um, crazy, for everyone involved.  Each chapter is a different take on a mundane aspect of life.  Grocery shopping.  Housework.  Babysitting.  And each chapter, the Immortal Dragon is unable to keep his one-time yakuza self at bay.  Threatening the Roomba because it's not keeping its 'turf' clean enough.  Helping the neighbor boy bury a toy he broke.  This is the kind of insanity I like in my manga.

Story line aside for a moment, the artwork was great as well.  The facial expressions on all of the characters, the backgrounds, everything is well done and detailed.  As much as I love to read, when it comes to manga, the artwork has always been more important to me and this doesn't disappoint in the least.  I'm eager to get my hands on the next volume now.

“Masa, I am done with all that. I am protecting my family in my own way. You cannot protect what is precious to you through violence” - The Immortal Dragon

This hilarious manga, The Way of the Househusband, follows infamous Yukuzo crime boss, Tatsu (aka The Immortal Dragon) in his efforts to change his life priorities. He's a househusband, now. However things aren't as easy as you would think. Members of his gang still look for their "boss" who went missing, wanting him back. Other gang members want him dead.

Oh, and he wears an apron, takes cooking lessons, and babysits neighborhood kids (much to everyone's surprise). Not only that, but this tough former crime boss, dotes on his wife's every need and thinks highly of her success. (It's refreshing!)

I found the manga incredibly funny watching this former tough guy crime boss juggle everyday life as a househusband. He seems almost oblivious to how intimidating he is and watching people continually scared of him for such innocent things.. it's rather funny and cute.

Thank you, Viz Media, for allowing me to read and review The Way of the Househusband, #1 and I can't wait to read the others in the collection.

I keep seeing this manga on twitter, so it was a delight to be able to receive an eARC of it!

I do wish the stories had more conclusive endings... But still, this was such a fun read! I love every single one of the characters, especially Miku (the wife). I definitely will read more of this series!

This is just the cutest thing ever! A former Yakuza, known as being basically unkillable and completely bloodthirsty falls in love, gets married and decides to become a house-husband while his designer wife brings home the bacon.
Now his days are filled with making adorable Bento lunches, figuring out the Roomba, playing with his cat, and occasionally fighting off the other Yakuza who sill want him dead.

A Fun story! The art was snapping and engaging and the story was fun and snarky!! I will definitely read more of this series!!

The Way of the Househusband is pure comedic gold. The stark contrast between the tough guy, lethal yakuza exterior and the devout, competent domestic housekeeper role is just incredible. This is a flawless execution of the trope of the guy with a scary face who is actually a teddy bear with heart of gold. I love how he takes pride in his role as a househusband and supports his wife, even if he's a little eccentric in how he goes about doing it.

I didn’t know I needed this manga until I chanced upon it. The Way of the Househusband is a laugh out loud funny manga about a former Yakuza legend adjusting to his new life as a dedicated house husband. The manga follows Tatsu as he tackles every day tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping. He faces judgment from other gang members that run into him but doesn’t let things phase him.

The relationship between Tatsu and his wife Miku is also adorable. He is completely devoted to her and they make such a silly and sweet pair. There is no swoon worthy romance, just the every day antics of a married couple. Right at the start I was giggling and had to send this manga to my husband, we read the manga together and had a great time. Tatsu and Miku reminded me a lot of my husband and I in terms of our personalities, so it made me extra happy.

This manga was just great and I’m honestly waiting for more, I read all the available chapters that I could and it is still being serialized. I would love to see an anime adaptation of this manga, I think that it would translate well and be an enjoyable series for many. This is a great manga with commentary not just on the role of women as homemakers, but also how a former delinquent can reintegrate into regular society.

*** I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review ***

The Way of the Househusband is one of my favorite gangster/yakuza comedy series. Basically a yakuza dude becomes a househusband, and directs all his crazy energy into his new role as his wife goes to work. It's a slice of life that includes other people that he knows from his old life, but also a lot of new people that interact with this guy as he does his best to support his wifey. :) The art is really enjoyable and really makes fun of the yakuza genre.
