Delightful children's picture book about a kitten that is learning martial arts. I enjoyed the coloring artwork and the instruction to the Korean language. Kitten wants very much to break a wooden board, but learns that to accomplish big goals, one needs to work on little ones first.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced book and the bright and adorable illustrations. I would definitely read this again and I want to read more from this author now.

This is an approachable book for elementary students interested in martial arts. Kitty is beginning her journey into Tae Kwon Do and is eager to break a board. First Kitty must learn that patience and perseverance are important traits of any martial artist. There is a bit too much vocabulary in this book, especially since they are in Korean. I think this would be a good book for classroom or school libraries, but younger readers may struggle with the Korean words.

I feel like this is the sort of book that has a very specific audience in mind, namely, children involved in taekwondo. This seems like it was written by a mother who spent a lot of time watching her children learn taekwondo, and considering the dedication, I get the feeling that that's the case. I can picture being able to give this to some of my students when they ask for a book about the martial art that they take lessons in. The glossary at the end provides easily understood explanations for the taekwondo specific vocabulary used within the text. In all, a nice book.

I read this book with my children (three elementary aged boys). They love martial arts and love cats; it goes without saying that I knew they'd enjoy CatKwondo. The book is cute, but what really mattered to me was the lessons the book conveys. In a fast-paced world obsessed with instant gratification, it is so important for kids to learn the value of working hard.

This was a winner for our family!

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. #netgalley #catkwondo

This is a cute book that deals with confidence, practise and focus. Kitten is starting to take Tae Kwon Do, but wants to break a board and wants to do it now! With the help of her Master and some of the other students in her class, she learns that it takes practice, patience and focus to become better at something. When she does not meet with success as quickly as she wants, she gets discouraged, but with encouragement, she keeps trying and gets better. I like that this book includes the tenets and rules of Tae Kwon Do, as that is a huge part of this discipline. When I read this with my grandson, we talked about the fact that his father did Tae Kwon Do for several years and that had him all the more interested. The illustrations are done in a fun way with a cartoonish look. We enjoyed both the looks of the story as well as the story itself.

Catkwondo. By Lisl H. Detlefsen, Illustrator: Erin Hunting. 2020. Capstone Editions (ARC eBook).

It is Kitten’s first day at Tae Kwon Do class and she wants to a break a board. But her teacher tells her she must be patient. In order to break a board Kitten will need to be patient and respectful toward her teachers and classmates. And Kitten will also need to stay focused and practice, practice, practice.

An adorably illustrated story with a clear message for kids to work hard towards their goals. There are Korean words throughout the story and the glossary of terms is in the back. The only critique I have is that the phonetic symbols could have been included on the page the terms are first introduced in the story, so that the reader can learn the proper pronunciation of the words as they go along on the first read-through.

Kitten goes to a Tae Kwon Do class. She wants to break a board right away. Before she can break the board, she has to practice and learn the rules of Tae Kwon Do. With practice and determination, Kitten can break the board.

I have never done Tae Kwon Do but I had friends who did when I was a kid. I remember how they were so excited about breaking a board. It was one of their biggest goals, and they were so proud when they could finally do it.

There was a great glossary of Korean terms at the back of the book. There were Korean terms that are used in Tae Kwon Do in the story. I wasn’t familiar with these words, so it was great to see this glossary with pronunciations.

I loved the message of this story. Kitten was able to reach her goal of breaking a board through lots of practice and focus. Even though Kitten wanted to break the board immediately, she came to realize that she needed to do the work before she could break the board. This can be applied to any goals you may have, which is an inspiring message for children.

This is a great children’s book!

Thank you Capstone for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An adorably illustrated picture book about perseverance that will resonate with little ones even if they don't take a martial arts class.

Catwondo by Lisl H. Detlefsen was a cute little book about a kitten learning how to break a board in her Tae Kwon Do lessons. The illustrations were adorable and accompanied the story well. This is a fun book for kids that love kittens and it'll teach them about resilience and having to work hard towards a goal when you're not perfect at something right from the start. It's also a good way to introduce a foreign language since there are Korean words sprinkled in throughout. The Tae Kwon Do Oath and a Tae Kwon Do glossary round it out well.

I am always here for a cat book in a classroom library. This is a good addition to any classroom library!

Kitten wants to break a board in her taekwondo class, but she's got a lot to learn! Her sensei, Master Ca,t teaches her to prepare her body and mind, and makes it look so easy! As Kitten struggles to learn and master her forms, Master Cat is there with encouragement and advice. Kitten practices her forms while reminding herself of the five tenets of taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. Her classmates all help her as she keeps her eye on the prize: breaking that board! Adorable digital illustrations and short sentences make this a sweet story about teamwork and working toward a goal. A list of Korean terms used in taekwondo adds new words to readers' vocabulary. Kitten's moments of frustration and her joy at success will resonate with readers, and images of classmates with advanced belts working to help Kitten improve nicely promote the value of working together. Master Cat is wizened and cheerful, and his little charges all have cartoony, expressive faces that will attract younger readers. Read alongside SumoKitty, by David Biedrzycki, a different martial arts story with a zen outlook... and cats.

Here's the thing -- if a picture book has a kitty, I want to read it. And this was cute when I read it a few months ago. The problem is, I can't even remember what I read, which isn't a great thing to say about a picture book. It needs to be memorable, needs to be something that'll pop in my head when i'm handselling. So it was fine. But not much more than that.

If it were not for my familiarity with martial arts, this book would be uninteresting. However, I did like the values and tenets that are taught -- such as patience, courtesy, integrity, and perseverance to name a few.

There are quite a few Korean terms and they are translated at the end of the book. I would have preferred that the translations appear at the beginning so that I least I had a preview of the terms and pronunciations. Illustrations were not that appealing -- something about the oversized heads and eyes were a little off-putting.

Overall, an okay read. Not the best, but not the worst.

I received a digital ARC from Capstone through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

This was a really fun story to read. I did Karate for a while as a kid, and it took me back to those days. Kitten is eager to do something, but to actually do it will not be a simple task. Yet with patience and practice, they will be surprised once the time comes to do it. Kids will learn some great life lessons reading this one, and will have a blast reading it.

This is a relatable book for those involved in martial arts. I could see my 6-year-old in this book, especially the illustration of finally getting that yellow belt. I think it could have been paced even slower, or showed the passage of time in a meaningful way. The character fulfills her objective through hard work, yes, but the child will see this as happening very quickly. I enjoy the theme and spirit of the book. The simple texts moves the story nicely. The illustrations are adorable.

This book was SO CUTE. I absolutely LOVED it. The story, the artwork, the actual words used during a tae kwon do class. It was a lovely read and one I would recommend to all for their little ones, especially if they are interested in martial arts. Kitten is just TO CUTE. I loved the moral of perseverance. 5, gamsahabnida, stars!

My thanks to NetGalley and Capstone/Capstone Editions for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
