This book is a story of a Tae Kwon Do student Kitten Jeja who really wants to break a board in half. The story takes you to her challenges and how she handles the pressure in order to get to her goal. Her passion became a bridge for friendship with the other kittens who have different belt colors. She was offered help and that's what she uses to her daily practice. Her persistence is commendable and truly remarkable.
The artworks in this book are detailed and well made. The color grading and the color palette is truly pleasing. They are neutral and dark which makes it comfortable to the eye.
The adorable thing I like in the artwork is how the illustrator draws the cats and Kitten Jeja's room is definitely so aesthetic and pleasing. I love it.
Conclusion:
Recommended! A cute story and artwork with delightful lessons.
This is quite a precious little book for any child but I am positive it will be a true hit among those who have an interest in the martial arts.
This book is not only adorable with its kitty main character but it also teaches some important lessons. It teaches that patience and practice are important not just in "Catknkwondo" but in life. Also shows the importance of helping others, being a team player and encouraging those around you.
The illustrations are really fun. The story although simple is actually really sweet. The Book also contains a small glossary of taekwondo at the end. Overall its just a cute book.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am in love with "Catkwondo by Lisl H. Detlefsen. This book is very informative for children and sends a great message. It teaches kids to try hard and no matter how difficult things get to never give up. I enjoyed the illustrations because they portrayed what kitten was feeling perfectly. I could sympathize with the characters and wished for them to succeed. I chose this book based off of the cover and because I am a fan of taekwondo however, this book is perfect for any audience. It is a great introduction to taekwondo for children and it explains the names/terms in the back of the book. This book would be perfect for a storytime because you could have the kids mimic what moves kitten is trying to do. It will also teach them about listening and having patience.
Should you read "Catwondo"?
Yes! It's too cute not to read. Honestly, this book is great for children and adults. Just a fun quick read.
**Received an advanced copy through NetGalley in return for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
A huge thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Wow, wow, wow!
I loved this so much! The art is absolutely adorable, and shows the emotions of Kitten so clearly. Her frustration pours off the page, as does her happiness, and everyone else's pride.
I also loved that the book teaches you a bit about Taekwando as well, including the proper Korean terms (for which there is a glossary in the back!), and the teachings of the sport.
Most importantly, however, is the lesson of determination. Of not giving up. That things take time to learn, even if you want to be the best right from the start- as children are wont to do. I know I was! But as frustrating as it can be, as long as it might take, the pay off is more than worth it!
It also taught me there are several gradations of black belts; who knew!?
Catkwondo is the perfect picture book for kids who have a karate or taekwondo background. It was a cute book that taught perseverance. I really wish I would’ve read the pronunciation guide at the end of the book before I began reading. Some of the Korean terms were difficult to pronounce when reading the book aloud. My daughter loved the kitten illustrations.
I was unable to open the pdf. The cover piqued my interest because it reminded me of the book cover Sumo Kitty.
The art for this picture book was well done and the story had a great message. It was very informative about taekwondo.
Unfortunately there is a lot of empty space on the pages and in some cases a lot of dialogue in large print. The length of the story is debatable/ It starts interesting then drags in the middle, then picks up with a positive ending. I think limiting the dialogue and having shorter sentences could benefit this story. Along with more interaction between characters depicted in the art.
This was a wonderful little book that reminded me how important extracurricular activities can be for building self-esteem in children and adults alike. Lessons about goal-setting, self-respect, and perseverance are becoming more and more important in today's society. I believe this title will do very, very well in libraries across the board.
So much more than a sweet and funny book about a "taekwondo loving" cat! The ilustrations are what intially grabbed my attention, but the story of perseverance and writing style kept me interested. The story is written from an outside narrator's point of view. That shift makes the story extra captivating! I feel like I am right next to kitten the entire time, and who wouldn't want to be next to such a "purrfect little fighter!"
I have this book a rating of 5 shining stars because it's super adorable and accesible. It's a light read, wrapped up in a magneficient style of writing and both developing a story. I do liked the fact that it's an adorable children's book and even for a child it should be a light read and easy to understand.
This was such an adorable book! The illustrations were darling and it taught me all about taekwondo in a unique way. I teach 3rd grade and I have a few girls in my class who take taekwondo that would absolutely love this to be added to our classroom library.
Catkwondo is a book that explains the sport of taekwondo, CAT STYLE. Kitten Jeja is just learning taekwondo and she is very eager to break a board. She learns patience and perseverance with the guidance of Master Cat and her fellow classmates. It is a very heartwarming story and something that most kids involved in sports can relate to. The creative cartoon drawings of the cats will definitely keep the attention of kid readers. And the onomatopoeias throughout the book give it that comic book feel, where you can almost hear all the sounds. It even has a small glossary at the end of the book, defining the different taekwondo terms and providing pronunciations. This book will definitely be a big hit amongst the grade school kids.
I received an ARC through NetGalley from Capstone. This picture book was really well executed and my 5-year-old told me it deserves 5 stars. Kitten is learning Taekwondo and all she wants to do is break a board. However, her Master tells her she must take it one step at a time, preparing both her mind and body. This is a great story for little ones who want to learn something new. They will see the importance of patience, hard work and perseverance. The Taekwondo Oath is included as well as 5 Tenets. There are some great action sequences that will have kids enamored with the physical movements. Korean terminology is used within the text and a glossary is included at the end, so kids can see the pronunciations and meanings of each Korean term. Available September 2020. I was really happy with this read!
I wanna give more stars but I am not sure, the book is not really amuse me.
Moral of the story is good, as kids often want to get instant result and not really wanna be patient with the process.
Kitten, the main character, managed to be patient and achieve the goal.
The book also introducing us to taekwondo, some of the rules, and also some Korean language that often used in taekwondo.
Good story, good illustration, recommended for your kiddo, especially if they have interest in sports/Korean culture or just love to read book :)
My daughter enjoyed this book. The book starts out with a Taekwondo oath, which I understands follows the Taekwondo standards in actuality. She also loved that there is a glossary which helps you understand what the terms mean. This is all accompanied by the most adorable cat ever!
Kitten wants to break a board the first time she walks into Tae Kwon do. She learns that it takes patience and a lot of practice to break the board.
Catkwondo is a cute story about setting a goal and putting in the work to obtain the goal. The illustrations are beautifully done. I would recommend this book for children up to third grade.
Thank you to Capstone Editions and NetGalley for the electronic ARC for review.
This is a really cute book. I think the title and the cover of this book are going to instantly attract readers! I liked that it had the terms in the back of the book because some of the terms were new to me.
Cute introduction to Tae Kwon Do basics with heavy emphasis on grit, perseverance and determination. Illustrations go further than the story, which admirably covers basic tae kwon do terminology, but doesn't go much further beyond that. Points for cuteness, if not for depth.
What a cute book! I love a good book featuring cats!
I love how this book focuses on perseverance, patience, and dedication!
I think children will enjoy that the cat character and the rest of the illustrations in this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced digital copy of this book!
I honestly really liked this small, short book. I feel like it is a really great book for children. I found it to be very informing.
