This book was wonderful! I love the illustrations and that there are other things we can look at and talk about on each page (although I do wonder if students with attention issues may find it a bit busy.)
Although I probably will not use this for a curriculum, I can see myself using this with individual students or small groups or recommending it to parents of children with attention issues. I especially appreciated the "Note to Parents and Caregivers" in the back of the book that offers practical strategies to use with children.
This book is especially suitable for students struggling with their self-esteem or self-worth as a result of either attention issues or behavioral problems. While reading, I thought of several students who may benefit from reading this story.
I really enjoyed this book! I am a clinical counselor who works with elementary aged children. I would definitely use this book as a tool to help teach children about AD/HD and improve their self-esteem. So many of children who have difficulties due to not being a "typical learner" often have a low self-esteem, it is nice to have a book that these children can relate to. I would recommend this book to colleagues. I would rate this book a 5 star.
Thank you Magination Press and Netgalley for a copy of My Wandering Dreaming Mind by Merriam Sarcia Saunders for an honest review.
This was a very real story for me. I read this to my grandson, who is very much like Sadie, but he didn't really identify with her, until we talked about the story a bit. Sadie has trouble paying attention, her mind wanders and she daydreams and it's hard for her to bring back her focus. She forgets things, doesn't hear instructions, has trouble with friends and losing things. Sadie realizes that this can cause problems, but she doesn't know what to do otherwise. Her parents are wonderful. They help her deal with her frustration and give her positive words like Imaginative instead of saying daydreams, or Curious instead of distracted. I love those choices and am going to try to use those with my grandson. This book could be used with children who have ADHD, are on the Autism Spectrum or just those who have other problems with attending. The illustrations are wonderful. I love how what she is imagining are shown in outline in the illustrations and Sadie's expressions are great. The information for parents and care-givers is quite good and would be helpful. I definitely recommend this one to families, schools and classrooms for use when dealing with anyone who has attention issues.
When you have strong imagination it can distract sometimes. Our main character little cute girl imagines a lot of things and sometimes gets overwhelmed with them. But then her parents teach her how to make that her power in stead of weakness.
Artwork is very good. It is a short read telling children's about power of curiosity and imagination.
It would have been more effective if imagined characters were lightly coloured.
Overall a nice read for little kids.
This is a much needed topic for children and adults alike! I absolutely love the way that the author wrote this book. It’s perfect, and much needed, in elementary school library collections. It is absolutely going on my “to buy” list!
"My Wandering Dreaming Mind" is a wordless picture book. Are wordless books valuable to a young reader? The answer is a resounding YES!!!
They: * develop vocabulary and oral language development, * foster observation and critical thinking skills, * improve writing skills, * build reading comprehension skills and *enhance the understanding of the story elements (character, setting, plot and theme).
Sadie is a little girl whose mind wanders and daydreams and she has a very hard time focusing on things. It affects her quality of life: her schoolwork, friends, and her everyday living. She recognizes she is having difficulty concentrating but her mind just takes her off track time and time again.
Fortunately her loving parents address her struggles and help her. They work with her and come up with an effective plan that inspires and lifts Sadies spirit so she feels empowered to take on her battle with ADHD and feel more positive about herself. The back of the book includes a note to parents and caregivers giving them more in-depth information and help if they have a child with similar issues.
The illustrations are lovely. They enrich the message of the book and make it more meaningful to both child and adult. I highly recommend this book.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a great resource for children who struggle to listen or do things due to ADHD or low self esteem. This book will make children recognise what happens in the book within their own lives and realize they are not alone or the only ones! I really feel like this book will get its point across towards children.
The back of the book has some great information, help and support too.
I liked this book and the fact that it addresses ADHD. I like how all of the animals and things that she imagines are illustrated in dotted lines so that the reader knows that is her imagination and not really there. I would have liked a solution to her ADHD or some tips/tricks to help her focus more in school and at home, but I did like the fact that she has a jar to put her ideas in.
No words but only beautiful illustrations of a little girl with a mind that dreams. The many things that she is thinking and how it makes her feel when she is overwhelmed by feelings she can not understand. The expectations and frustration that result in a mind that is different. How her parents embrace her difference and how it bonds their relationship.
If you have a child that has a mind that wanders, this may be the resource where parents can connect to their child.
A Special Thank you to Magination Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
What a lovely and important book. The illustrations are also beautiful.
A lot of children these days are struggling with many issues and parents don't always know how to deal with it. I think this book will help them a lot. Also, a book that can be used by teachers. Highly recommended.
I thought that this book got its message across really well.
The book will be ideal for children in the same position, those that struggle to pay attention and focus and that have a lack of ability to concentrate whether that is from ADHD, low self esteem or Asperger's, I liked the focus that is placed on the child in the book - it shows that whilst she can't concentrate she is imagining, creative in her own way and imaginative
It is 4 stars from me - highly recommended!
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I have a cousin who wanders alot and has trouble focusing which originally got me interested in the story. The topic is so well spoken about. It show how easy it is to turn a positive into a negative <3
I will definitely be buying this book.
Turn to this before the Ritalin, for it might just let a young child cope if they're as self-aware as the heroine here. She's just so easily distracted, messy, and off in her own dream world, you see, and one day it comes to the point when she asks why. What I really liked about the book, and one that almost lifted it from the books-with-a-purpose-only shelf to the books-for-all-to-enjoy pile, was the wonderful way the artwork conveyed the imaginary worlds our girl is spending her time in. Visually, this is stunning – and I am sure the non-fiction section of advice to the caring adult will be of help to many. A success.
I received the ARC through NetGalley and I am so glad that I requested this book.
This book is no longer available on NetGalley but there's a feature to "Wish for It" and I use it as I am interested with this book. I have read several books from APA's publisher and love most of them.
This book is another lovely book, about a girl with attentional issues. The book use the girl's perspective, so we can feel related to what's on her mind.
The author is an ADHD Cerfiticate Clinical Services Provider and in this book, she also share how to deal with the special needs' kids, especially the one with attentional issues like Sadie, the main character on this book.
The author also mentioned that usually a child with attentional issues may go unnoticed as needing help, well, because they are usually too busy with their own minds. However, they mostly misunderstood as lazy or slacking off on purpose.
That is why, parents must try to understand children's behaviour and character, as parents have the biggest role on children's development.
This book also have great illustration and simple story, so can be enjoyed both by parents and the kids
