I love books that mix cultures, and I especially love that this is a true story and has pictures of the actual family at the end of the story. This definitely had a wonderful storyline where music brought two different cultures and languages together. The illustrations are wonderful and really draw the reader into the story.

A pleasant, if perhaps slightly unusual, evocation of unity in a mixed-race family. It's about a little kid whose grandparents both come from very different cultures. What could combine the two? – well, the chance fact that both (Mexican and Alpine European) play the accordion. I say this is unusual as I wouldn't have picked such a circumstance to show how people of different stripe can actually get along, but it's more or less based on the author's own upbringing. The moral, that differences can be overcome by luck, music and just a tiny bit of determination to make friends, is a welcome one, and the surprise in the formatting will please the target reader. I'm not alone in wondering, however, if a little glossary wouldn't have helped.

This is a lovely book where music is, as always, the universal language. Young readers will especially like this book and many will be able to identify with families of differing backgrounds coming together to form a united group. This will appeal to those children who want to be problem solvers and will be delighted when that mission is accomplished when the grandfathers are able to bridge that gap of communicating. The idea of "one big happy family" will appeal to all.

Read this to my daughter tonight and she loved it. Love the nod to multiculturalism and the fact that music can be the language that bonds us all.

I really enjoyed this cute, short picture book. Reading the back matter it is based on the author's own life growing up in two cultures. The illustrator has children they are raising in two different cultures as well. The text is simple and flows nicely. Would be great for a read-aloud. The illustrations are really nice and colorful. It is great for children to see that even if people seem different, and speak different languages, there is always common ground to be found. This would be a great read-aloud for 4-6 y/o.

I received this ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

As a music teacher, I was excited to see this book in my inbox. This book tells the story of two grandfathers separated by language, but united by their music. It’s fine. I teach upper elementary and I think it would fall flat with them but might find a more enthusiastic audience in younger grades.
