Title: A Gripping Tale of Intrigue and Redemption: A Review of "A Fatal Flaw" by Anne Perry

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

"A Fatal Flaw" by Anne Perry is a captivating historical mystery novel that takes readers on a thrilling journey through the dark underbelly of Victorian London. With her trademark storytelling prowess, Perry weaves a tale of intrigue, betrayal, and redemption that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end.

Set in the year 1890, the story revolves around the enigmatic figure of Daniel Pitt, a young lawyer who finds himself entangled in a perplexing case. When his client, arrogant biographer Russell Graves, is accused of murdering his wife, Daniel is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the gruesome crime. As he delves deeper into the case, Daniel discovers a web of secrets and hidden motives that threaten to shatter the lives of those involved.

One of the standout aspects of "A Fatal Flaw" is Perry's meticulous attention to historical detail. The author effortlessly transports readers back in time, immersing them in the atmospheric streets of Victorian London. From the grimy slums to the opulent drawing rooms, Perry vividly depicts the stark contrast between the social classes, adding depth and authenticity to the story.

The characters in "A Fatal Flaw" are well-developed and multi-dimensional, each harboring their own secrets and flaws. Daniel Pitt, in particular, is a compelling protagonist who undergoes a remarkable transformation as he confronts his own demons while seeking justice for his client. Perry skillfully explores themes of personal growth, forgiveness, and the power of redemption, making the characters relatable and compelling.
I highly recommend it.

A woman’s desperate cry for help from Daniel Pitt sends him to Miriam Croft , noted scientist, for help proving that Daniel is innocent. Proving his innocence opened the door to someone or something killing Daniel in the same way. Left to decipher the reason behind this murder the two find answers that could also mean a fiery end for them.

I’ve been a long time fan of Anne Perry. Loved the William Monk and Thomas & Charlotte Pitt series. This is the first I’ve read of the newer Daniel Pitt novels.

Anne Perry ‘s books always have incomparable atmosphere, well drawn characters and a feeling that I’m with an old familiar friend. I love that with Daniel Pitt the time period transitions from Victorian England to the Edwardian period, which I came to love watching Downton Abbey. Daniel Pitt endeavors to save an innocent man from the gallows. This book has it all: mystery, suspense, courtroom drama, ,and 20th Century forensics! Now, I need to read the first two installments in the latest series.

Thanks for the ARC!! I will admit I had a bit of a hard time getting into the latest "Daniel Pitt" but once I did I just wanted to keep reading! Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors and I always look forward to her books. I have long enjoyed the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series and this new series featuring their son Daniel is just as good!! Can't wait for the next one to see what case Daniel and Miriam work on.

I could not get into this book and only made it through the first few chapters. I enjoyed the Monk and Pitt books but this one seemed uninteresting to me.

Daniel Pitt, still working as a junior associate at the law firm, is approached by a young woman, asking him to defend her boyfriend on murder charges. The victim had died in a fire and the ME had concluded that a blow to the head was the cause of death. Daniel doesn't think that he has any defense until Miriam fford Croft suggests that he retain the services of Sir Barnabas Saltram, one of her former teachers. The move has the desired effect and the boyfriend is acquitted, But then the story gets a bit repetitive when the boyfriend is found dead, murdered in the same manner and same circumstances. The person charged this time is the young woman and Daniel feels obligated to represent her as well. However, during the interview of his new client, Daniel realizes not only did the woman kill her boyfriend, but she was probably responsible for the first death as well. Knowing that he was manipulated into this situation, Daniel has to find a way to lose the case while still representing his client as best he can,

Again, Miriam connects Daniel with an expert witness who can refute the testimony of Saltram. But Saltram is a formidable enemy and when his theories are discounted and efforts are made my Daniel's law firm colleagues to discount the evidence the Saltram had given in other cases, in essence to destroy Saltram's expert reputation, Daniel, Miriam and the law firm are endangered.

The circumstances of the cases was a bit too repetitive with the testimony going over and over about fire and cracked skulls. The story and interaction of the characters was great but the repetition left me a bit sleepy. Still all and all a good read.

One Fatal Flaw by Anne Perry -
“Two fiery deaths have young lawyer Daniel Pitt and his scientist friend Miriam fford Croft racing to solve a forensic crisis. When a desperate woman comes to Daniel Pitt seeking a lawyer for her boyfriend, Rob Adwell, Daniel is convinced of the young man’s innocence. Adwell has been accused of murder and of setting a fire to conceal the body. Miriam connects Daniel with her former teacher Sir Barnabas Saltram, an expert in arson, and together, they reveal Adwell’s innocence by proving that an accidental fire caused the victim’s death. But it’s not long before Adwell is killed in the same fiery fashion. If these deaths are, in fact, murders, what essential clue could Daniel and Miriam have missed?
As their investigation deepens, one of Saltram’s former cases comes into question, and Miriam finds herself on the defensive. If the reasoning Saltram used in that case is proved false, several other cases will have to be re-tried, and Saltram’s expert status—not to mention Miriam’s reputation—will be ruined. Haunted by Saltram’s shady tactics in and outside of the classroom, Miriam is desperate to figure out truths both past and present and protect herself in the face of Saltram’s lies.”
This book was not a favorite for me. It was about the trials and how the suspect, guilty or not, should go free if they obtained a good lawyer. The books dealt with three murders. Did all 3 Killers get away with murder?
One of the main characters, Miriam, was very upset because she could not practice law. The reason? It was 1910 and she was a woman. Not a straight forward mystery.

A big thank you to the author Anne Perry, the publisher Headline, and NetGalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for my candid review.

I have been enjoying this series of books about criminal investigations that take part in the Victorian Era in Great Britain. The unlikely pair up of a female wanna be forensic investigator and a young barrister give insight into the beginnings of forensic science. Up until this era, crimes have mainly been solved with witness testimony and circumstantial evidence. The era of scientific investigation is just beginning to come to light and is a fascinating case of trial and error.

This series also takes place in the time before women were given the right to vote, let alone get college/university educations and certainly not to be taken seriously as any sort of authoritarian position.

It is a great series that will entertain one and all. I look forward to going back to the predecessor series involving the parents of the barrister.

Another enjoyable tale featuring Anne Perry's latest main character Daniel Pitt. Perry is one of those writers that you can always count on to deliver an intelligent mystery with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing throughout. I also love the way she sprinkles in details of every day life, customs and social practices throughout.

One Fatal Flaw is the third in the Daniel Pitt series. Daniel is a barrister, unlike his detective/MI5 father, but Daniel's investigations are along the lines of detective/mystery cases. In One Fatal Flaw, Daniel is approached by a young woman who pleads that he take the case of her beloved who is accused of arson and murder. Daniel reaches out to a brilliant specialist in fire to act as his expert witness. This expert set out what was then understood about fire and arson and shaped the law on the matter.

Daniel later discovers the truth behind the arson and murder cases and seeks to right the injustice. This will require Daniel to go up against experts, criminals who are adept at fraud and intimidation and will bring grave danger.

Anne Perry delivers another engaging read tying in the Pitt family with Daniel as the lead.

This is my first Daniel Pitt mystery and I was not disappointed. I have read many other Anne Perry books, and just like those, this one sucked me in. It is interesting to see a different point of view, that of a lawyer instead of a Police Officer (Thomas Pitt) or a Private Investigator (Monk). The story kept me turning the pages. It has mysteries surrounding mysteries. New characters are introduced and newer ways to solve crimes.

Great story.

Another winner from Anne Perry. I am loving this new series featuring Daniel Pitt. I read the first one, sadly missed the second installment....which I will go back and read, and now caught the third entry.

Well developed characters and a gripping story. The reader is totally immersed in not just the tale, but the entire atmosphere of the Victorian era. Historical fiction at its best.

One Fatal Flaw has everything in it that a reader is looking for in solving crimes and mysteries at the same time. While this is the 3rd book in a Daniel Pitt series, this is the first that I read. I must admit that while this can definitely be a standalone book for reading, I am usually one that wants to read all prequels in order to know the back stories. Nevertheless, to follow along as Daniel and Miriam work together to first solve a murder, second to solve a copy-cat crime, and then to resurrect an old case that has a bearing on the current crimes, kept me very intrigued. The peripheral characters added to the story in a way to keep the reader's attention. I admit I felt I was missing some pieces and background of the characters by not reading the previous books, but can still say that this is a compelling read. Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in return for an honest review, which this has been. #NetGalley #OneFatalFlaw #RandomHouse

Wow!
This series gets better and better. The characters grow and the stories are incredibly well done.
I love history and I love reading about the law. Working in characters from the previous books and letting all of them grow and change for better and worse.
I look forward to everyone of her books.

I am enjoying this Daniel Pitt series. This one was my least favorite of the 3 so far. Daniel Pitt is growing in his career as a junior associate barrister. He takes a case out of sympathy when a pretty young woman pleads with him to defend her young man. This case has some very sticky points which lead him to the use of the new science of forensics. Miriam fford Croft introduces him to a man who seems to be the preeminent scientist in the field. She seems to have a difficult past with him. The defense of this case will lead Daniel down a slippery road involving further cases which could become very dangerous to reputations, lives, and the law.
This was a great installment in the series. There were a couple of events that were included but were not really taken care of in the resolution of the novel. I hope those will be addressed before publication. I began to like and appreciate Kitteridge much more in this book even though his part becomes smaller toward the end. The relationship with Miriam also moves forward which will surely be an issue addressed in some later book. I was riveted to the book as I read it. The ending, however, seemed weak. I couldn't see how the judge could let in testimony that, to me, didn't have any real relevance to the case being tried. Unfortunately, the whole resolution is tied to some of these points so I was disappointed in that. On the whole, I enjoyed the story. 3.5 stars.
