His & Hers By Alice Feeney
If you have been paying attention, you know that when I give the summary of a book, it means, whether I loved it or hated it, it is challenging to discuss because of spoilers. Below is the summary of Alice Feeney's latest book, His & Hers. For me, His & Hers is Alice Feeney's first book. I know another author to add to the "I'm late to the party" list. But you know what I always say!

Summary Of His & Hers By Alice Feeney
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.
Anna Andrews finally has what she wants. Almost. She's worked hard to become the main TV presenter of the BBC's lunchtime news, putting work before friends, family, and her now ex-husband. So, when someone threatens to take her dream job away, she'll do almost anything to keep it.
When asked to cover a murder in Blackdown—the sleepy countryside village where she grew up—Anna is reluctant to go. But when the victim turns out to be one of her childhood friends, she can't leave. It soon becomes clear that Anna isn't just covering the story; she's at the heart of it.

DCI Jack Harper left London for a reason but never thought he'd end up working in a place like Blackdown. When the body of a young woman is discovered, Jack decides not to tell anyone that he knew the victim, until he begins to realize he is a suspect in his own murder investigation.
One of them knows more than they are letting on. Someone isn't telling the truth. Alternating between Anna's and Jack's points of view, His & Hers is a fast-paced, complex, and dark puzzle that will keep readers guessing until the very end.

Apparently There Are Multiple Sides To Every Summary
That summary. It lies. This isn't just about His & Hers. Not only Oh. Wait. I didn't tell you the most important thing yet. Sorry. I'm all over the place.

To Be Salty Or Not To Be, That Is The Question
Or in the case of me and Adult Psychological Questions, to be trash or not to be trash. That is the question. Ten percent into His & Hers and I was scoping out dumpsters that were big enough to hold me and the whiteboard. Apparently, I hadn't learned my lesson from S.J. Bolton and The Split. I was going to beat Alice Feeney at her own game.
No. No I was not. It is now 0-2, in favor of the authors.
What was going to happen, is that I and the whiteboard were absolutely and no doubt throwing myself into the dumpster for Alice Feeney. Hell, not long after that, I had realized that the dumpster fire was riding my ass down the river. Feeney was taking me to church. His & Hers was unnerving, mystifying, and downright jarring book to ever cross my path.

It is also the first book I have read since I was a kid to make me walk around and check that the door, windows, and patio were locked, blinds down, and crawl up in a ball on the couch.
Yes. Books have put me in the fetal position but not in this way, after checking that everything was locked and shut. This mostly from one specific point of view. But, see, I can't talk about that, at all. There are multiple points of view. I can say that, which brings me to what I was going to talk about, above.

Apparently There Are Multiple Sides To Every Summary
That summary. It lies. And that ain't cool, man. This isn't just about His & Hers. This is about a lot of people. I can't say much more than that, but it LIES. Yeah. Ok. That's all I can say there. Well, as I said above, there is this other point of view and it, it fucks with you. BADLY.
Want to know a secret. It almost made me cry. Not because I was sad. I was scared of that point of view. Like, I was seriously scared of it. You know we joke about the Council of the Ninja of the Magic Conjuring Cats, but they do have some emotional IQ. And at one point? I noticed that Pavel had got on top of the couch, bad hips, and all. He was watching over me.

And when has a book ever made me even come close to crying? Mainly out of fear. I DON'T DO THAT.

I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Women who connected as school girls and retain a tenuous connection through their hometown start being targeted and violently murdered. There are plenty of twists in this novel and discovering the back story is as interesting as the current violent happenings.

Thanks to NetGalley, Flatiron Books, Libro.FM and MacMillan Audio for this free ARC & ALC which publishes July 28, 2020.

Well I didn't see that coming. This one kept me guessing right until the end.

When a woman is murdered in the small town of Blackdown, Anna Andrews heads back to her hometown as a news correspondent to cover the story. Local detective, Jack Harper, is investigating the case and becomes suspicious of Anna's involvement. Secrets abound in this little town but which leads to murder?

This audiobook had fantastic narration alternating between the two main characters...plus an additional third party perspective. I would highly recommend going with the audio for this book. It truly brought this story to life in a way that I don't think would've translated the same with a physical copy. Though a tad slow at times, it kept me engaged and eagerly listening. I kept thinking I had figured things out but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Warning: There are some gruesome and disturbing elements to this story including sexual assault.

His and Hers is the second Alice Feeney book I’ve read. I was a bit apprehensive when starting this book because I struggled to follow the audiobook of Sometimes I Lie. I had a much better experience reading a print version of His and Hers. Feeney’s storytelling is immersive and twisted and kept me guessing till the end. I was fairly confident I knew where this book was headed and had things figured out about 3/4 of the way through,, but I was wrong! With the alternating narrators and quickly paced plot, His and Hers will keep you turning the pages.

Thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book which I won through a Facebook contest.

From the opening chapter you begin a journey with Anna and her ex-husband Jack, told from each other's perspective. Anna has many demons from her youth, which unfold as she tells things from her perspective. Jack has his own battles he is fighting. Their paths cross again, as she is demoted to an investigative reporter and he is DCI in the town they grew up in. A woman they both know is murdered and their paths collide in this twisty psychological thriller, that also tells things from a 3rd perspective, the killer. Who is this killer?

I had received this book from NetGalley and I have to say I absolutely loved this book. It was a page turner and kept me at the edge of my seat. This is the first book I've read by Alice Feeney and I am definitely reading her others

"There are at least two sides to every story; yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. I always prefer my own."

This book was great. Alternating between "His" and "Her" points of view, led to this page turning thrill ride. It kept me guessing the whole time, even up until the last page. This is definitely one to recommend!

His & Hers by Alice Feeney is a psychological thriller that keeps the reader guessing until the last page. Feeney does a masterful job of weaving the past and present to create a mystery that is compellingly readable. Describing events from different perspectives can sometimes be confusing; thankfully, that is not the case here. For someone who reads thrillers and mysteries regularly, I have to admit that I didn’t see the double plot twist coming. My only reservation about the book is that I’m not sure the title is the best/most descriptive title for the book. I look forward to reading more books from this author!

Anna Andrews worked her way up to being a BBC news anchor and is devastated when she is pushed back down to news correspondent. Her first story requires her to go back to her hometown of Blackdown, a village in Surrey, England. While covering this murder case, Anna crosses paths with DCI Jack Harper. Soon into the investigation, it’s clear Anna, Jack, and the victim all have secrets that someone will kill to keep.

The book includes alternating chapters between Jack, Anna, and an unidentified person. Nobody is perfect in this story and it’s hard to know who to trust. However, I like both Anna and Jack in spite of not always knowing what they’re hiding. I like the author’s style of writing and was engaged in the story from the very beginning. The flashbacks to the mean girls in Anna’s past are sometimes hard to read and I would have preferred less details on some of the past incidents, even though they set the stage for later events. The narrative seems to be heading one way, but then takes off in a whole new direction. I think I suspected almost everyone of being the murderer at one time or another during the story, but was shocked when the whole truth came out. The ending was bizarre but unexpected and tied up most of the loose ends. To say more could spoil things, but I recommend this to readers looking for a fast-paced thriller that will keep them guessing.

I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Flatiron Books. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

I was lucky enough to win a digital copy of His and Hers by Alice Feeny from Flatiron Books. His and Hers did not disappoint! I love the two sides to the story, each chapter alternating between the two main characters. This was an easy read that is also perfect for the beach. I thought I had the book figures out but Feeney does a great job twisting the story and it is not what you would expect.
Anna is a reporter making a name for herself. Jack came back to smalltown USA to continue his police work and be close to family. Murders start happening, one by one. Women Anna went to school with so many years ago. Jack helps uncover the mystery but items from the murder begin showing up in his car and at his house. Who is doing these murders??
An Overall great murder, suspense story. I will be recommending this to my friends and family. I will also continue to look for Alice Feeney's work! She knows how to keep you guessing! Special thanks once again to Flatiron books, Alice Fenney, and NetGalley for the advance digital copy!

Alice Feeney does it again! This book was so interesting and kept me guessing until the end and I NEVER GUESSED correctly. Again, she creates perfectly flawed unreliable narrators and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Great summer, or anytime, read. Highly recommended.

Not even sure how to review this one! It was so incredibly dark and twisted. The story line took off in so many directions and I literally trusted no one. I was making guesses and assumptions left and right. I'll admit I was way off. A lot. The end, blew me away. Honestly, this book was extremely dark at times and could be triggering for people. Some parts definitely were rough to read and I fully intend to read a happier book next.
If you're looking for a complex and twisted thriller that will keep you guessing... definitely pick this one up!

3.5 rounded up. Classic Alice Feeney twists in this one, so if you're a fan of that, then this is definitely for you! I enjoy them for the most part—I especially liked the little shock reveals in His & Hers at the ends of chapters along the way. It was like Feeney was blowing your mind little by little until you got the whole story!

While I had an inkling of something, I never actually guessed who the baddie was. Unfortunately, though, I didn't really like the reveal. Like, it was ok, but also kind of boring? And there was a death that I was actually pretty mad about. I don't want to give anything else away, but it didn't feel satisfying at the end for me.

The story itself was very fast-paced, though, and I felt myself flying through the chapters so I could get to the end and find out what happens.

I enjoyed this book. The alternating points of view were very well-done, and the characterization was great. I kept thinking I knew what has happening and who was behind everything, but things kept changing on me. By the end I had somewhat guessed the "culprit," but I was still surprised. The book had a satisfying ending with still leaving a few things unanswered. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries and thrillers.

Thanks so much to Flatiron Books Sweepstakes for my digital copy of this new thriller! It was a very quick read told by three different perspectives with some expected twists, but a big surprise at the end! A few details were too graphic during the book. His & Hers will be released July 28th. @alicewriterland @flatiron_books

My Review of His & Hers

**********
This book was fantastic! It was a thriller that really fed every aspect and need that readers of this genre yearn for.

The book captivated every sense of mine and I was lost in the story; not hearing a sound, smelling a thing or seeing anything but the visualization that was created in my own head. The two POV’s was told by alternating chapters. It was brilliant and noted at the end of each chapter; by the killer (who could be anyone; even possibly one of the protagonists). I felt such a satisfaction with what occurred and what I didn’t see coming and this book was on my mind whenever I was away from it.

Detectives Jack Harper and Newscaster Anna Andrews are a former married couple, now divorced after the loss of their child two year marriage prior.

They can’t help but get linked up again when there is news of a murder and Jack must investigate and Anna must cover the story. But what they uncover is that this is not a coincidence to either of them. Someone is out to make one of them pay for the mistakes of the past. And slowly, people are dying at the hands of a serial killer. Could they be framing one another or is it someone with an unburied secret seeking retribution for the past. Or simply a serial killer trying to gain notoriety... Regardless, they are suspects but at the same time may be in harm’s way along with their loved ones.

That’s why this needs to be resolved as quickly as possible before the loss of life becomes too great.

This was my first Alice Feeney, and it did not disappoint! The POV bounces between Jack, Anna, and the inner monologue of the killer. The narrative was sturdy, but the ending BLEW. MY. MIND.

What to know beforehand: There are some pretty sinister themes, so just be aware of the content warning. (I will leave it in comments) Also, all of these characters are unlikable, with most of them being utterly detestable. I didn’t mind it at all, however some people might not enjoy it for that reason.

If I were texting you periodically throughout the book it would probably look like this (no spoilers, also swipe for the memes that would’ve been in there too)
𝟐𝟎% 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭: “Not a good one to cure my reading slump because I think I know where the ending is going ALREADY. Ugh.”
𝟓𝟎% 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭: “I mean, yeah I’m into it. I want to watch all the characters get their comeuppance, but the twist is a basic thriller trope soooo”
𝟔𝟓% 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭: “Yeahhhh, so I was right about the twist. But I didn’t expect that..or THAT...OR THAT.”
𝟕𝟓% 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭: “...I don’t know what to think anymore.”
𝟗𝟓% 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭: “TF I TAKE IT ALL BACK! I WAS ACTUALLY WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING AND WAS MANIPULATED TO BELIEVE I WAS RIGHT UNTIL THE VERY END... seriously though that twist was perfection.”

If you like cat and mouse chase thrillers, cryptic friendship bracelets, and literally every character being suspicious, you might like this one.

Personal rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

Loved this book. It will keep you guessing and changing your mind. Couldn’t wait to finish it. Alice Feeney does not disappoint. She is an amazing writer that creates these dark characters that you have to figure out.

This gripping, Adult Thriller, follows three perspectives: his, hers and a mystery individual, that could be him, it could be her or it could be some completely unrelated individual.

Here is what I can tell you, the her of this equation is BBC-television reporter, Anna Andrews.

Anna was such an interesting character. I loved reading from her perspective. She's far from perfect and she's pretty honest about all of that with the reader.

The him is none other than Anna's ex-husband, intrepid-Blackdown DCI, Jack Harper.

Jack also was a great perspective to read from. You can tell he is a man with a lot of wounds just trying to do his best anyway he can. You can also tell he still carries a spark for Anna.

When Anna gets sent to Blackdown to report on a recent homicide, Jack is surprised to spot her on his crime scene.

Until very recently, Anna had been working in-studio, reporting the mid-day news, not trotting around in the field. Unfortunately for Anna, that cushy position was nabbed back by her colleague returning from maternity leave.

Their brief reunion doesn't go well. Jack is much closer to this case than he's letting on and the last thing he needs is his ex digging around.

Thinking this is an isolated incident, Jack is hoping Anna will just return to London, but the killer has other plans.

Soon, more bodies are dropping and Anna seems to have a connection with all of the victims. Could she be next?

The alternating perspectives were such a great way to watch this story unfold. My mind was spinning trying to piece together what was happening and who the mystery perspective was.

I thought that was super clever. There were moments when I thought that mystery perspective was every single character I had met thus far.

My earliest inclination of who it was, was incorrect and I was glad. Feeney played me and I love that!

There were a couple of plot points I found to be slightly confusing and one of the red herrings I thought was implausible and unnecessary, but a lot of other readers may disagree with me.

My slight criticisms are totally personal preference and nothing to do with the author, or her skill at weaving an intriguing tale.

As you learn more about the victims, and their connections with Anna, that was my favorite part.

Some truly terrible things had happened in Anna's village and I definitely think she was in the right to leave it far behind. Regrettably, we all know buried secrets seldom stay buried.

If you are looking for an intense, fast-paced read to pick up this summer, you should definitely give His & Hers a shot! I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Flatiron Books, for providing me with a copy of this to read and review. I had a blast and really appreciate getting to it early.

A thriller that actually kept me guessing and on my toes. I loved the different points of view and how it all pulled together at the end.

I have heard nothing but excellent things about His & Hers by Alice Feeney so I was THRILLED to get my hands on it, then further excited when I was swept up into the story right away. It was just as good as I hoped!

This book offers not one but two narrators I didn’t fully trust, along with the point of view from a killer. This engaged me from beginning to end and lived up to its many praises and accolades.

Here’s the premise:

Anna Andrews finally has what she wants. Almost. She’s worked hard to become the main TV presenter of the BBC’s lunchtime news, putting work before friends, family, and her now ex-husband. So, when someone threatens to take her dream job away, she’ll do almost anything to keep it.

When asked to cover a murder in Blackdown–the sleepy countryside village where she grew up–Anna is reluctant to go. But when the victim turns out to be one of her childhood friends, she can’t leave. It soon becomes clear that Anna isn’t just covering the story, she’s at the heart of it.

DCI Jack Harper left London for a reason, but never thought he’d end up working in a place like Blackdown. When the body of a young woman is discovered, Jack decides not to tell anyone that he knew the victim, until he begins to realise he is a suspect in his own murder investigation.

I think the best way to read this book is to jump in and don’t read many reviews, especially ones with spoilers. You want to be surprised and let this novel take you on a wild ride with ups and downs and shocking reveals.

This comes out on the 28th of July (SOON!) and you can pre-order it here!
