This just wasn't for me. I love Alice Feeney and her books, but something was missing for me in this one. But, I do know plenty of other readers will love it!

His & Hers is a twisty tale filled with unreliable narrators with lots of secrets and an explosive ending. A woman is found murdered in the woods and we follow one of the detectives, Jack, and news reporter, Anna, as they are sucked into the investigation. As the story unfolds we also get flashbacks to when the characters were teenagers and we learn how the events from their past are related to what is happening currently.

We follow three narrators, Anna, Jack, and the killer which makes for a very interesting and enthralling read. There are constant reveals as the story is being told which makes it hard to put down. I had no clue as I was reading what was going to happen next. I did guess who the killer about half way through but that didn’t hamper my enjoyment at all. The beauty of this story is the way everything is slowly unraveled. I loved the back and forth way of telling the story primarily through Jack and Anna.

None of the characters are particularly likable which I think works because everyone that we meet in the story is suspicious. It does have the tired trope of an alcoholic British woman but I think Anna’s character is done in a way that it makes sense. This whole story takes place in two days which helps keep the pace of the book at a steady pace. I wasn’t a fan of how the flashbacks would happen seemingly out of nowhere. I would have preferred them to get their own chapter to help keep the format of the story consistent. However, the flashbacks not only (eventually) gave us the whole picture but they also served as a sort of foreshadowing of what was to come in the present storyline. There are a few trigger warnings though for things like sexual assault, rape, and the torture and mutilation of cats so please be aware of that.

Alice Feeney is the queen of the unreliable narrator and this book is no exception. This book does require some suspension of belief at certain points but overall Feeney does a great job of entertaining the reader. If you love domestic thrillers then this is one that I think you will really enjoy. It is getting to be that time of year where we are spending a lot of time outdoors and His & Hers would be a great one to throw into your bag and get lost into the world of Jack and Anna while you are at the pool/beach.

I won a NetGalley eARC of this novel from a giveaway hosted by Flatiron Books. All opinions are my own.

On a whim, I entered a giveaway for an ARC of His & Hers by Alice Feeney. The concept for the book seemed interesting, so I figured it might be a fun read. Recently, I have been in the mood for a thriller or murder mystery read. While I had no prior experience with the author’s work, I was surprised by this book.

The description for His & Hers starts with, “There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.” This gives readers enough background to know that they should question everything as they read. The story follows newsreader Anna Andrews and Detective Jack Harper after a woman is murdered in their quintessential British village, Blackdown. It is not long before this one murder turns into a spree where all the victims seem to be connected. The novel follows these characters as they navigate the aftermath and consequences of these murders, and both of them seem to know more than they are letting on.

Feeney does a great job at writing unreliable narrators. The characters are flawed and possibly relatable for some. Being flawed does not mean they are not likable, but do you trust them? Can you believe them? I liked Jack’s character as a detective because this helped satisfy my mood for a murder mystery, and I tend to like television shows with detectives solving crimes. Even more so, this kept me on the edge of my seat when trying to figure out if a detective was really involved in some twisted murder spree or cover up. Anna’s tragic backstory is very shocking and compelling. The flashbacks to her childhood added so much more to the story.

Throughout this entire book, I could not stop coming up with new theories about who the killer was. At every turn, I suspected a new character. They all make themselves look guilty at times, and readers never have the whole truth. A little over halfway through, I was fairly certain I had figured it out. However, my theory seemed a little predictable and I was fully prepared to be disappointed because of it. When it seemed like my guess was right, I was bummed for a second, but then the story, thankfully, took a turn yet again. I have to say that I really did not see the ending coming. In hindsight, it does make sense. However, after having it so built up, I was expecting a little more from the actual reveal though. The ending also left me wanting just a little bit more in terms of how the truth played out.

Alice Feeney’s His & Hers did not disappoint. I went in expecting an intriguing story, but other than that I had no expectations given my lack of experience with the author’s writing. The story was genuinely captivating and kept me hooked all the way through. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a thrilling murder mystery or for those who have liked Feeney’s previous works.

*Content warnings: bullying, domestic abuse, sudden infant death syndrome, sexual assault/rape, animal cruelty*

Thank you to the publisher, Flatiron Books, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novel before its release on July 28th, 2020.

I was sure I knew who the murderer was about 3/4 of the way through the book, changed my mind 3 times and still didn't get it right. Alice Feeney is so good at misdirection. Loved this book!

I haven't read an Alice Feeney book that I didn't absolutely love. This one is no exception. I'm definitely ready for her to put out a new one!

This ending was a bit cray cray and I didn’t see it coming. The story is told between the two main characters with each chapter from a different perspective and at times jumps back to the past. It was a quick and enjoyable read and leaves you guessing up until the last chapter.

An enjoyable thriller with an interesting if slightly implausible twist. Fast paced, easy read that flies along. Worth a read

This is a well-plotted psychological thriller that uses the interesting premise of switching perspectives, one being the killer. I was glued to it and constantly guessing as to what would come next. Check it out if you're looking for a fast-paced and twisty read.

Hmm, not sure how to even synopsize this. The “his and hers” refers to the shifting perspectives of a police detective investigating a murder and a TV presenter who is reporting on it. It quickly becomes clear that there are close connections between the two, the first victim, and subsequent victims (there are several, and the murders were unexpectedly grisly). In addition to these two narrators, there’s a third unnamed one – the killer. Which doesn’t preclude Jack or Anna (our two main protagonists) from being the killer, though there are several other possibilities. (One took me by surprise and I felt dumb for not putting two and two together.) The ending was…I believe the word is “batshit”; at the risk of spoiling any potential readers I will say that it’s the most unlikely person in the entire book. But this was an entertaining, if dark, read, and it kept me fairly entertained. I gave it a B.

Alice Feeney is one of new auto buy authors after reading this fantastic thriller. The premise of there is His story, Her story, the Murder’s and then the truth sets this one up to be very original. I was guessing till almost the end of the book. The clues that were twisted into the story were laid perfectly. Five high school friends share a secret over what happened at the 16th birthday party of one of them and years later one by one are showing up dead. Great suspense throughout the story.

Thank you Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fantastic audiobook! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and wasn’t able to guess the ending. So many twists that made this one of my favorite thrillers of the year

First let me say that I absolutely loved listening to the audiobook while reading. The narrator had such a bone chilling effect that it really added to the suspense and kept me guessing.

I fully enjoyed His & Hers so much, and felt that the characters that author Alice Feeney created were perfectly flawed in their own way. The best part as a reader was being able to experience details of the story little by little, revealing just enough that made me question just who the killer could be.
