Ever since reading Alice Feeney’s debut novel a few years ago, I have been an ardent fan of her writing. “His & Hers” is without a doubt, my favourite of hers so far. It is the twistiest crime thriller I’ve read in recent memory.
A fast-paced read with an atmospheric setting, this one will have you feverishly turning pages. Written from three different points of view, HIS, HERS, and the KILLERS, the reader is continuously suspecting both him and her of being the killer, then you read on and suspect someone else, then a little later… someone else, etc. etc…
While reading this novel, I at no time knew who the killer was. Though… I have to admit that at one point or other I suspected each and every main character in the book. AND.. the author managed to surprise me when the killer was finally revealed. To surprise a jaded old thriller reader like me deserves kudos. Well done Alice Feeney!
I highly recommend this crime thriller to fans who appreciate books which are full of labyrinthine twists, endless red herrings, and, at the end of the day, an ending which both surprises and makes perfect sense.
I’ve read that they are making this novel into a television crime series. I sure hope that it is available where I live.
A suspense that draws the reader in and doesn't let go. It is no surprise to me to find that the author used to work for the BBC crafting engaging news. I received it free as part of a giveaway and I would absolutely buy it. Characters that feel like they could be your friends you know them so well and an edge of your seat feel I haven't felt in a novel in a long time.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc for my honest opinion. I really enjoyed this book! I read it in one day. I have to say this is my favorite book of the year!
Wow. Alice Feeney delivers again. I’ve never been disappointed by her. His & Hers delivers the twists! Anna and Jack both know a woman who was recently killed, but they’re determined to figure out who killed her before anyone can connect either of them to the woman.
This was one I could not listen to past 9pm and I was really happy I had the galley to switch to at that point!
I started out reading the digital copy from @netgalley but switched to audio when I hurt my eye and I truly believe this book was BETTER as audio. That creepy killer voice for certain chapters was intense. The other chapters alternated between Anna and Jack. The narrators were perfect, accents and all.
This story was twisty as heck....they just kept coming!!
Well paced, great tension and whiplash inducing twists....Alice gave me all of it!!!
This was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. My only complaint-a few things were repetitive and annoyed me. I can be easily annoyed though soo...If you need a great audiobook, please listen to His & Hers!!
Thank you @librofm for my Advanced Listening Copy!
So I did the audiobook version of this... and was unsure of that narrator. Totally creepy which may have been the vibe but i think they took it way to far. It was an OKAY book for me. I think there is a lot of hype around it which is how it gained so much traction. I appreciate the opportunity to read this, and while I did enjoy this authors first book, this one seemed (again I did this via audiobook) choppy and cringy at moments.
The ultimate story where nothing is as it seems, His & Hers follows reporter Anna Andrews, and DCI Jack Harper, as they investigate the murder of a young woman. Anna has recently had her dream job pulled from under her when she’s sent on an assignment back to her hometown of Blackdown. When she arrives she discovers that not only is her ex-husband, Jack Harper the detective on the case, but the deceased is someone they have in common, someone Anna never expected to see again. Both Anna and Jack know more than they’re letting on as they try to find the killer before it’s too late.
Told in alternating perspectives, the narration switches between Jack (His), Anna (Hers), and the voice of the killer. I had a hard time getting into the story, but once I did, I was hooked. It took me about 50 pages to get to that point. I ended up picking it up and putting it down over the series of a few weeks before I got to that point. I did not remotely predict the ending. The last ten pages truly threw me for a loop. I had predictions on what the twist would be, but I was completely wrong.
Thank you to Flatiron Books and Netgalley for providing me with a review copy in exchange for my honest feedback. All opinions are my own.
Thank you netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. I want to start off with, I love thrillers. I think thrillers are what usually get me out of my reading slump. But this one just didn't do it for me. I tried giving it a go, read about a quarter into the book and it just fell flat for me. For most of the book I wasn't sure what I was reading. The reader is purposefully left to not know where the story is leading and to many that might be what you are looking for, but it not my style or thriller. I would recommend this thriller for people that like least details as possible while still using a lot of verbiage. I couldn't get into this one. Who knows the end might be great. This was a DNF for me. I'm so sorry.
This book kept me guessing! I listened to the Audible version of this and the voice of the "killer" was awesome. I loved it. I had no idea who it was, you think you know, but then a twist and that theory is out the window. Is it terrible that I loved the killer and how it ended to benefit them? I would call this book a fun, twisty, ride. Keep guessing! You'll never figure it out.
This is a fast-paced thriller with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end. If you’re a fan of Alice Feeney’s previous books, don’t mind unreliable narrators, or enjoy suspense with a whodunit aspect, then you will enjoy this book. The story is told by three different narrators - Anna (her side of the story), Jack (his side of the story) and the killer (could be Anna, Jack or someone else entirely). I deducted a star because there were a couple of things that I didn’t like and thought were unnecessary. Overall, I found His & Hers to be an entertaining page turner that kept me wanting to find out how it ends.
This book will leave you guessing at who did it. Usually I'm pretty good at figuring out how things are going to go but this had me second guessing and being surprised with each chapter. It was interesting getting a view from each side. The characters have you believing that the other one did it or second guessing who you can trust. I think my heart raced a little bit at the end.
4 stars
Apparently I am behind the times because this is the first book that I have read by Alice Feeney, but let me just say that it won’t be the last! I now need to go back and read her other books.
Told in alternating viewpoints of Anna and Jack with the occasional narration thrown in by “the killer”, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. This was one of those books where I kept saying “just one more chapter”, reading long after I should have been in bed.
I don’t want to spoil anything for you because the less you know the better. You can find plenty of reviews that give you a synopsis, but I honestly think going into this one blind is the best way to enjoy this book.
Thank you to Flatiron Books for my copy of this book via NetGalley
I love a good psychological suspense thriller, and this one was a terrific one. I listened to the audiobook version of this which was narrated by Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine who both did an excellent job of capturing the suspense and eeriness of the book.
This book was told in alternate points of view between a news reporter, the detective, and the killer. In the audiobook, the killer’s voice is disguised and comes across as very creepy. The plotting was expertly done, and kept me guessing throughout the book. This one is complusively readable, and I didn’t want to stop listening to the book. In a lot of the suspense ones lately, I usually have a fairly good idea of what’s really going on, but not in this one.
If you like psychological suspense, I encourage you to go get this one, and I especially encourage you to listen if that is an option for you.
My Rating: 5 Stars
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I enjoyed the book overall. I ended up listening to His & Hers on audiobook and really liked some of the production aspects of it, like the narration with voice disguise. It was unique and added to the creepiness of the story, I discussed this book on my podcast with my #BuddyRead co-host, and also the Shelf Addiction online book club read it. For the most part, the group liked the read as well. Feel free to check out the full podcast episode at the link below.
This was a great book for 2020 reading. It’s definitely keeps you on edge of the seat with layers of mystery on top of mystery. Please do yourself a favor and do NOT read any spoiler reviews. It’s worth following along til the end for the ‘AH HA’ moment. All I can say is the 3 alternative narratives for each chapter is nicely done. The author has such a way to create different voices. Love it! I was spooked.
When TV presenter Anna Andrews finds out that there has been a murder in the village where she grew up, she is sent there to cover the story for BBC. When she arrives at the scene of the crime, she unhappily reunites with DCI Jack Harper, her ex-husband, who just happens to be the lead on the case. The two become very close to the case as more murders begin to occur, and their own secrets almost get them into very deep trouble. His & Hers by Alice Feeney is a psychological thriller with so many twists and turns that will most definitely keep readers in suspense.
His & Hers is officially one of my favorite reads of 2020. Everything about the book screamed secrets and lies, and I absolutely loved it. The alternating point of views between Anna and Jack were phenomenal; I really felt connected to theses two characters and enjoyed getting to see the story from their perspectives. And can we please just talk about the plot twists throughout this book? I genuinely thought I had figured out who was behind the murders about halfway through the story, but I was wrong. I was so very wrong. The ending was absolutely mind-blowing, and I know that I am going to be thinking about it for a long time. This was, without a doubt, a five star read for me, and I cannot recommend it enough!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for the ARC of this book!
I finished His & Hers a couple weeks ago and hung onto every word till the very end. Thanks to @flatiron_books #partner , @netgalley and @librofm for providing me with free copies of this one. I switched back and forth between the NetGalley ebook and the Libro.fm audio (which you the way was too notch)!
#hisandhers is told through alternating points of view of “His” - Det. Jack Harper, “Her” - Anna Andrews, BBC correspondent, promoted to lunchtime news anchor, and an unidentified killer’s distorted voice (you really get the full impact of this creepy voice via the audiobook, but if you read the book you’ll just have to channel a creepy distorted voice via a voice changer!)
The first victim is Rachel Hopkins, whom is found dead in the woods, with a friendship bracelet tied around her tongue, nails clipped, and the words “two-faced” written on her nails. What follows in a series of murders of other women, whom all seem to be connected to the two main narrators of this book.
I really enjoyed piecing together the clues and speculating on the identity of the killer. I will say I got really close to figuring it out, and then the ending took a dramatic twist that I really didn’t see coming. I’m still processing that ending, and I can’t decide if I fully buy into it, but nevertheless I did really enjoy this one and I think you will too. I absolutely loved the way it kept me wanting to turn the page, making it a very quick read.
Add this to your TBR or pick it up now because it’s definitely a must-read for fans of suspense!
I really liked this slow burn of a novel and that it was told from different viewpoints throughout. I think the author did a good job building suspense and drawing intrigue throughout. There were many different characters that could be the culprit, but the book keeps you in the dark. I liked the monologues by the guilty and that they kept me in the dark at the same time. I want to read more from this author and will be recommending this book to others. Thanks for the ARC, Netgalley.
They hype is real with His & Hers.
I loved the alternating narratives between Him, Her, and the Killer. One of my favorite things about a thriller is trying to figure out the twists. Feeney did it! I did not figure it out. And I thought I had.
I will definitely be going on to read Feeney's other books.
