A fresh read to dive you back into the ever growing literary world of vampires. Caleb Roehrig entertains in his lgbt story about a boy living in a town populated by creatures of the night.

I loved this book! It has everything I love, vampires, LGBTQ+ main character, and humor. I think it is rare to find a book that makes you laugh out loud multiple times, but this one hits the mark! With main character that manages to be hilarious even when the world is falling apart, it was fun to read his story.

All of the relationships felt so real, and true to their ages. I obviously can't say enough good things about this!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this one!

I'm as excited about the comeback of vampire YA books as anyone, and a gay YA vampire book seemed right up my alley. Unfortunately, this one kind of missed the mark for me.

Let's start out with the things I did like! I liked how realistic everything was--considering all the paranormal elements. The teenage characters acted like teenagers, and their friendships/relationships were incredibly true to life. I think Caleb Roehrig does a really good job of writing messy, flawed, realistic teenage characters, and I absolutely loved that. I also enjoyed the rep in this; I cannot speak to its accuracy, since I am not a gay guy, but as a lesbian, I'm happy whenever I see ownvoices queer rep.

Unfortunately, the realistic portrayal of the teenage characters, particularly the main character, was also a shortcoming of the book. Auggie is a sort of "chosen one" who is slowly being taken over by a sinister force that could lead to the destruction of humanity and a new age of vampire superiority. Sounds awesome, right? The problem is, all these secret societies come out of the woodwork to try to take advantage of the rising evil. Virtually all important information is given to Auggie in paragraphs-long info dumps from characters that are part of aforementioned secret societies and are way cooler than Auggie. He just doesn't really do anything until pretty late in the game, which as I mentioned, seems accurate to a real teenager, but doesn't make for a very interesting reading experience. I can't help but feel like this book would be more compelling if it were told from the perspective of literally any other character. Normally I love and respect the Chosen One trope because it's so prolific for a reason, but in this instance, it was a swing and miss for me.

As I said, the characters are really good and I think if they had been placed in a traditional YA contemporary, I would have liked this book much more.

First and foremost, I am so glad that vampires are making a comeback and gayer than ever. I would have loved this book even more when I was a teen, but that doesn't detract from how much I enjoyed it. The characters, the action, the twists, the snark ... all so much fun. Honestly, if I'd had the time I probably would have finished in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down. If you grew up loving Buffy like I did, then I definitely recommend checking it out. I'm also hoping that there is a sequel in the works ... I want more adventures in this world!

Roehrig's "The Fell of Dark" is a twisty and entertaining spin on vampire lore. The protagonist, Auggie, is a fairly average teenage boy (struggling with math and looking for his first great love, or at least a first kiss). His town is less average. It's sitting on The Nexus, which is a point in the world that amplifies the magical and mystical realms like a good MacGuffin. Ultimately, it's revealed that there is a very important reason why Auggie is in this town at this time. It's a reveal that readers will come to find out and jump into the call to action. It's a funny and witty sense of humor that buoys the story, even when some of the twists on a twist may weary some.

If you're a fan of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," there are more than enough nods to make you smile. Only in this case, our boy Auggie is a completely different type of chosen one and his romantic rivals do present a triangle that Whedon definitely would have not gotten away with in the late 90s.

The Fell of Dark follows August, a highschooler who is just trying to get through his classes when he is approached by Jude, a new cute vampire. Jude finds August to warn him about a curse that comes back every 100 years… and that this time around it’s his problem to deal with.
Many people are worried about vampire books coming back, but I’m all about this trend. Those who are worried may be expecting romance and sappy plots, but this book is not like that at all. Fell of Dark is action packed, full of friends with secrets, unexpected friends/allies, and teenage hormones. There is not much else to say about this book without giving away spoilers, but trust me when I say this book is amazing. If you are looking for a fast paced book that includes cute gay vampires and people looking to end the world (and some who are trying to save it) then I cannot recommend this book enough!

This is a very ambitious book. Roehrig combines snark, historical figures, vampires and werewolves in a very entertaining way. There’s a touch of romance or more like attraction maybe between the teen protagonist Auggie who discovers he’s the Chosen One holding a demon vessel inside of him (major Buffy vibes!) and 2 vampires who come to town and it plays out in a very interesting way – as a way to show LGBQT history and attitudes throughout time and to play with the turn your lover into a vampire and stay together for eternity trope.

There’s loads of danger and action and it’s fun – yet it didn’t quite hit the 5 star mark for me. There were so many characters (primarily his best friend and her love interest/family) that came and went only to service the plot as needed and I was a little squicked out but how old the vampires were in relation to Auggie. Even though they are *stuck* in time as teens. But that’s just me as an old lady – I used to be all about that during the Twilight years – even though it bothers me now. So you know…ignore that if it doesn’t bother you.

I've been a fan of Roehrig's books since Last Seen Leaving. I think he's brilliant at writing relatable teens, relationships while always stretching as a writer. I highly recommend this one to readers looking for a fun twist on old paranormal tropes and to LGBQT teens looking for FUN books where they get to be the hero.

I think the more and more I read by Caleb Roehrig, the more I absolutely adore him! I loved "The Fell of Dark," it had everything I could possibly ask for - romance, snark, vampires, magic, action, and so much more!! I know in the past we've been a bit oversaturated with vampires, but if they were all books like this one? I say Bring. It. On!!!! Also, all of the characters were absolutely wonderful and added something to the narrative. And Auggie. Dear, sweet Auggie. What a fantastic protagonist!

Ultimately, this fun and engaging story will be a hit for all YA readers - vampire enthusiasts or not - making it a must have for YA collections.

I received this book as an Advanced E Reader from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This book is delightful and charming. I adored the setting and the supernatural elements combined with this amazing everyday life in high school type of story. The relationship aspect was refreshing. I loved the historical characters being floated in. I really really enjoyed this book. I definitely recommend.

It feels like this book was written specifically for me, and I ate. it. up! It’s basically Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but for queer boys. As much as I loved this book, I would have loved it even more as a teenager. Overall, Auggie is a great narrator, the lore is interesting, and the romantic tension is killer! It’s smart YA fiction, and if this doesn’t create another vampire craze in literature, I don’t know what will. Roehrig is stellar when it comes to dialogue, campiness, and suspense, and all of his strengths are on display here. Fell of Dark is easily his most ambitious novel, and while the exposition gets a tad tiresome and Auggie’s boner references should have been trimmed down (maybe they will be in the finished copy; I read an ARC), I’d say it’s a success. I feel like room for a sequel was left intentionally, and as the meme goes— I would like to see it. 4.5/5 stars!

Charming and delightful. Will appeal to paranormal-obssessed teens and 30-somethings who grew up on Buffy in equal measure. A first purchase for all YA collections.
