On a dark and rainy night Molly Clarke disappears. Did she just walk away from her life? Does she want to be found? Authorities and her husband suspect so.
Molly was a woman who was grieving. Five years earlier her daughter died in a freak accident and Molly blames herself. She is sure that the rest of her family resents her presence and feels as if she cannot reach them. For all of her trying she feels that she is a bad mother and perhaps her family agrees.
But her daughter Nic just can't seem to let things go. She knows that her relationship with her mother was strained and now with her gone she realizes her part in creating that distance. But is it her guilt that is driving her to dig deeper into her mother's disappearance? Or is there a valid reason for that niggling suspicion that won't let her rest?
Don't Look For Me is told in alternative viewpoints - both Molly and Nic's. This allows us to get a sense of their relationship as we cull through the clues of the case. Walker spends a lot of time in the mind of Molly as a mother and these sentiments are some that most of us mothers share. Through Nic's character we get to see the change that daughters go through as they mature and come of age. You can see where the friction in the mother-daughter relationship comes from. But you also see the love even through times of angst.
As far as the mystery was concerned there were some surprising twists. You really had to pay attention in order to figure things out before the great reveal.
This was my first Wendy Walker book and I have to say that I enjoyed my read. I can see why her books generate so much buzz and excitement. I will definitely be on the lookout for her next novel.
Suspenseful story told from different perspectives about the disappearance of Molly Clarke, a grieving mother of three who lost her youngest daughter to a tragic accident. Wonderfully plotted pschological thriller!
Thanks to NetGalley/ St. Martins Press for the free digital ARC.
A simple “walk away” case that happens a lot.
Nothing sinister here.
A note was written and a woman does not want to be found.
Is this what really happened to Molly?
Wendy Walker’s latest fast-paced and gripping domestic thriller is unlike anything I have read. From the beginning, Walker delivered a story that was anxiety ridden that you just cannot help but empathize with Molly and her family.
This is a story of a woman so broken after being made to feel responsible for the death of her youngest daughter, and what happens when we fail to cope with the blame, grief and guilt. Molly’s mysterious disappearance, and a daughter’s desperation to find her mother is so well written, and so addictive to read.
Walker created an atmospheric creepy small town mystery read perfect for the season. This is definitely one of my favorite thrillers I have read!
WOW! You will never want to drive on a country road at night ever again!! My heart was racing during this entire book but I couldn’t put it down. Thank you NetGalley for a wonderful advanced reader copy.
Molly Clarke was driving home from her son’s football game when she’s caught in a storm. She’s upset because her son ignored her despite driving four hours to see him play. Her husband no longer speaks to her and her daughter says she hates her. That’s all stemming from when Molly hit and killed their nine-year-old daughter five years ago. When a truck stops on the side of the road to rescue Molly from her broken down car, she jumps in. She wasn’t heard from again, until a note was found saying that she was leaving her family. Two weeks later, her daughter receives a tip about her mother’s disappearance that sends her back to the small town where her mother was last seen.
This was such a fast paced thriller. There were constant twists and cliffhangers at the ends of the chapters that made it difficult to put the book down. The chapters became shorter as the pacing of the story sped up at the end of the story, which made it easier to fly through it.
I was quite surprised at the ending. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong. The clues were clever in the way that they could refer to different characters, so I didn’t guess correctly. Even when I realized the truth right before it was revealed, it was still such a shock.
This was a great, fast paced thriller.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
To continue with October's theme of "books that scare you", I'm on a thriller run! I enjoyed this one enough - it kept me turning the pages and I couldn't put it down once I got into the story. I didn't think the mystery was that hard to figure out, and I actually liked the way the story talked about grief more than the actual who-dun-it aspect. I also appreciated the mother/daughter bond, and thought Walker nailed the loyalty and fierceness of a mother's love quite well.
Good novel and great writing. I enjoyed it very much and went looking for more books by Wendy Walker.
Wow- Wendy Walker’s newest thriller had me scared pretty much immediately and kept me feeling that way throughout the book. I think any fan of thrillers should give this one a read- it is fast paced and I lost some sleep over this one!
Unfortunately I’m gonna have to give this book a 2 1/2 star. I remember getting approved for this book at the beginning of summer and I was so looking forward to it but unfortunately I try to start this book several times and it just did not keep my interest long enough for me to continue reading.
I found the storyline to be very basic in the outcome to be very predictable which is upsetting knowing that I had to make myself finish this book just to get what I thought was gonna happen all along.
Another psychological slam dunk from Wendy Walker! This one was full of her trademark twists and turns, and kept my head spinning every single time I thought I had it figured out (spoiler- I didn't). She has definitely solidified her place as my favorite thriller author, and this was my favorite one of hers yet- bring on the next!!
Don’t Look for Me by Wendy Walker kept my interest the whole way through and I was quite surprised at the ending as I didn’t see a few things coming. Great characters and great delivery by the audible narrators. I’m now looking forward to reading/listening to more Wendy Walkers Novels and have Emma in The Night on hold with my local library.
Don't Look For Me was a slow read for me. I didn't connect well with this book and struggled to enjoy it. I will say that in the final third, it really started clicking, and seriously picked up to the end, with a late twist that I did not see coming at all. Overall, I didn't get much depth from the characters, and I really never cared about them, so it was hard to care about the story.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this novel. I was not able to get into the story so will not be leaving a full review.
i really enjoyed reading this book, the characters were great and I really enjoyed going on this mystery. I look forward to more from the author.
5 years after tragically losing her youngest child, Molly appears to have walked away from her life, but her daughter Nicole will not stop looking for her. Drawn back to the location of her disappearance, Nicole tries to make sense of what happened and find the answers she desperately needs. Fast paced page turner full of twists that will keep you guessing. Another winner from Wendy Walker.
Molly Clarke disappears during a storm - did she leave her family, unable to deal with a tragic family incident or did something else happen to her?
Don't Look for Me is twisty and hard to put down. Some of it could be argued that it was predictable but there were also quite a few things that I didn't see coming either. The way everything tied together at the end was perfectly put. I love that both Molly and Nicole were smart and cunning rather than giving up. I might check out Wendy Walker's previous novels and look forward to her next. I've read quite a fair share of thrillers this year and would definitely say that this is one of the top that I've read in awhile.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Don't Look for me by Wendy Walker.
Molly's life is not going well. Her teen and young adult daughter barely speak to her, and her husband is clearly no longer in love with her. Ever since a huge tragedy in their family, they have not been the same and Molly can't take it anymore. So when people find a note saying goodbye and her car abandoned, everyone assumes that Molly is another runaway wife and mother. But her oldest daughter, knowing that she hasn't been fair to her mother, cannot give up on finding her. What if something terrible happened to her? Even if she does want to hide, her daughter still wants to know that she's safe.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this, but I don't want to give too much away. I enjoyed all of the twists and turns, it had a more unique premise that wasn't completely formulaic. I really liked Molly and her mom, but I had a hard time with the other characters. There was something about them and their plights that did not add up to me, even in the end. And I really can't stand it when kids are written to behave practically as adults. Drives me nuts.
Don’t Look For Me Book Review
Dolly’s Eyes Are Watching! ..
Where do I even begin? When was the last time you read a book and asked yourself, where did time go? That is precisely what happened when I read this book. It was the perfect escape into a world of suspense and intrigue. I have only read a few books this year that have been this enthralling and this one here, happens to be one of my favorite thrillers of 2020.
There is not much to say without spoiling the story. Will me telling you to pick it up and read it now be convincing enough? A very unique and well developed plot with the right amount of mystery to keep you guessing until the very end. Im always intrigued by little girls who are eerily mysterious in books. The supporting character in this book happened to be my favorite, a little girl that kept me turning those pages and really creeped me out at times. What I loved most about this book is the underlying message, a mother’s love is truly very powerful and has no limits.
If you are looking for a captivating thriller with short chapters and packed with suspense that will hook you in right from the start, make Don’t Look For Me your next read. Wendy Walker is now an auto buy author for me. I read two years ago before creating this account and it was also a five star. Her writing style is one I love and cannot wait to see what she creates next.
Molly Clarke killed her daughter...or did she?
Molly Clarke's husband is cheating on her...or is he?
Molly Clarke's children despise her...or do they?
Molly Clarke decided to step away from her life...or did she?
Sooo many questions!! This book took off from the very first page! It got very intense and creepy right away. My heart broke for Molly so many times as she blamed herself for everything. While trying to beat the hurricane she is driving through the downpour, wind and rain whipping around..on a deserted road...in a rundown little town....she runs out of gas.....
OMG..this town gave me the creeps. Just the overall vibe of the rundown town with the little gas station, motel and bar. Molly knew she should avoid the town, she knew nothing good would come out of it. Yet, there she was driving through the town, all alone......
I would love to say I would never put myself in Molly's place but I think we all do at some point. Not making the best decisions, derailed by things that are playing heavily on our mind. Yet, what did Molly do? Did she decide she was just going to walk away?
I literally flew through this book. It was quite the page turner. This was a 5 star read all the way until the end for me. The ending was a little "too much" in my mind. I did have trouble believing how everything was explained away in the end. However, I still really enjoyed it and would highly recommend this one!
If there's one thing that can be said about Wendy Walker's books its that they are compulsively readable, and it's very hard to put them down! I've lost much sleep reading her books because they suck you in don't spit you back out til the very last page!
When Molly disappears one night, most think she has finally run from her life that has been slowly falling apart. After the loss of one child, her relationship with her other 2 children and her husband have not faired well. But something just doesn't sit right with her daughter Nicole, and she is determined to find out what happened - convinced her mom didn't just walk away like everyone else seems to believe.
I loved the premise of this one, however I think a lot of the suspense was lost for me know exactly what happened to Molly from the very beginning. There is a lot of fingerpointing at different suspects, but a lot of my initial suspicions from the beginning were slowly confirmed - the curse of reading too many thrillers, I guess!
It was a fun story to get lost in, and Walker's writing definitely draws you in immediately and it's so easy to get lost in her books. A little less twisty or shocking than I had wished but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
