As a thriller lover, I look for books that will absolutely pull me into the heart of the story, take me on a rollercoaster ride, and throw me down in unexpected places. Books that will leave me turning the pages, long into the night, trying to piece the puzzle together. This one, however, didn't hold up to that.
Now, don't get me wrong, the characters are chiseled nicely, but there was something lacking with the plot line. It maybe because I came into the series at book 16, or it could be that I just didn't set well with this one, but it was definitely not my favorite.
With that said, I will tell you to give this a try. The writing style is good, and the characters are likable. What I find lacking, you may find absolutely captivating. And, despite this being a 2.5 star read for me now, I will go back later, after I've read all the books in the series, and give this another try.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Author/Publisher and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*
This was a slow start for me and honestly became one that I could not finish. There wasn’t enough suspense and story to get me going.
Loved it! This one brought back Lucy Kincaid and Max Revere, both doing their thing. At first it appears they have separate cases they are investigating but when their paths start to cross things get a little dicey. Bodies are discovered, cars are forced off the road, people are shot in front of them, and there is definitely a who-done-it twist all through it. Definitely one to keep you on the edge of your seat. This can be read as a standalone and not part of the series.

Allison Brennan does it again with another pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thriller. Follow along with Lucy and Max as they uncover more chilling secrets and twists. The character development is great, and the storyline is told in a way that will have you deeply immersed as the story evolves and unfolds.
I haven't read all of the previous novels in this series but it was easy to follow along and jump into this book in the series. I am intrigued to go ahead and read the previous books in this series that I have yet to read to get more background info on the characters we are introduced to and get a fuller understanding of what makes them, well.....them.
A definite must-read novel to add to your TBR collection.
Thanks Netgalley, Minotaur books, and Allison Brennan for this ARC.. I’m a Fan of Max Revere, and I thought I’d take a chance on Lucy K.incaid. I enjoyed the two who came together in this book, as it’s like getting two books in one. l liked both storylines so now I’m going to seek out the whole Lucy Kincaid series, as I’ve already read all the Max Revere series., 4 star cause I now need to read the other in the series, but I’m guessing it’s going to be great !
Two strong women are working on these cases, but they don’t always see eye to eye as one is a fed and one a reporter. What is great about this is Lucy and Max have their own amazing series so to see these fearless women in the same novel is always a treat.
The two cases do not appear to be related, but we quickly see there is more to these stories. The details and investigating are intricate and the writing is vividly detailed. While the cases are developing we also get to catch up with the different character families and I loved Max’s updates regarding her love life and sister. Lucy’s had me sad, but it all worked out and Sean is perfect for her. A few siblings did get mentioned in the book, but I missed seeing one or more having a prominent role. That being said, I thought it was great having more focus on Nate!
I love this series, and this story was no exception. The emotions, actions, intrigue, who done it feel and family dynamics wrapped me up and I could not put the book down until I had answers. Thank you for the chance to read this book and share my opinions. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
In Allison Brennan's latest book, she combines two of her favorite characters into one storyline. Lucy Kincaid, FBI agent and profiler, is investing a three year old disappearance of an entire family. When the bones of all but one of the family members is uncovered, Lucy is determined to find the missing son of the family. Lucy and her partner Nate are determined to find out what happened to the Albright child and in working the case, discover it is tied to one that Maxine Revere, investigative reporter, is working on. Maxine is trying to find out why a confessed killer of a young woman named Victoria has recanted his statement. Max hires Sean Rogan, Lucy’s husband, to help her and it becomes apparent that Lucy's case and Max's are linked together. I am a huge fan of Brennan's and Cut and Run is just another of her great books!
Another great boom from Allison Brennan! I love all her books and this did not disappoint. It was great to read more about Lucy and Sean! I would definitely recommend this whole series!
I received this ARC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
#16 in the Lucy Kincaid series and they just keep getting better and better. While you don't have to read the previous 15 books in order to read this one, I do suggest you start at the beginning so that you can meet all the awesome characters.
Another edge of your seat, action packed, page turner with twists/turns, intertwined stories, characters that are just like family, and just the right amount of romance.
I am a die hard Allison Brennan fan and I love the Lucy Kincaid series. To be honest, I LOVE all the series!!!
#Lucy #Sean #Nate #Ryan #Max #CutandRun #NetGalley
Another great read from Allison Brennan. Lucy Kincaid working with my favorite Maxine Revere what more could you ask for? As usual, an engrossing storyline and characters you care about. Allison gets better and better with each installment. A must-read.
Oh, this was a good one! Allison Brennan scores with this wonderfully convoluted thriller that offers the story of two cases that eventually intertwine and featuring FBI agents, private investigators, local law enforcement and a determined investigative reporter all playing a part in solving them.
When four skeletons are discovered in a grave together following a storm — a man, woman and two teenage girls — Ash Dominguez, of the local crime lab, is pretty sure who they are. This discovery sets in motion a huge investigation about how the Albright family, who had disappeared three years earlier, ended up dead. The common view of the case was that Denise Albright had embezzled $3 million dollars, and there was a grainy photo of the family's vehicle headed over the border to Mexico.
And now, in what seems to be an unrelated case, Victoria Mills, a local realtor from a well-to-do family, is found dead at a house she was to show. Now there has been a confession, but something just doesn't seem right.
There's lots of action and excitement in this book. I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy a good mystery.
Great parallel story with Lucy and Max. One of my favorites. A family is murdered after the wife is suspected of embezzling 3million from.her employer and skipping town. A 9 year old boy overhears information about the murder of his family and sends him into hiding for 3 long years. Another murder, one that Max is following. Lots of twists and turns as the to cases are unraveled. How are they related and who done it?
Although Cut and Run is a part of a series, it reads terrifically as a stand-alone. The novel stars two of Allison Brennan's popular characters, Lucy Kincaid and Max(ine) Revere. Lucy is an FBI agent, and Max is a journalist, specializing in true crimes. The book begins with Lucy being assigned to a case in the San Antonio area where the remains of four bodies are uncovered thanks to flooding from a major storm. They are quickly identified as the Albright family, a family assumed to have been on the run following embezzlement by the family matriarch three years ago. The bodies are Mr. and Mrs. Albright and their two daughters; however, their son, who has also been missing, is not found along with his family. Lucy and her partner Nate are no longer sure that the Albright family was ever on the run and have no idea what could have happened to their son. They quickly discover that the original embezzlement/disappearance investigation was shoddy at best, so they need to start back at the beginning to try to recreate the timeline. Concurrently, Max Revere comes to San Antonio to investigate another crime where a man who had pleaded guilty to the murder of a local realtor has suddenly recanted. She's aided in her investigation by Lucy's husband Sean. The murdered woman's family has enlisted Max's help to find out the truth.
Both of the cases are complex but expertly handled by author Brennan. Once Max learns that her murder victim was a friend of Mrs. Albright, she teams up with a reluctant Lucy to connect the dots between the two cases. Max and Lucy are both great characters, well-defined by Brennan. The plotline is complicated but compelling, and I raced to the finish.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. And well done, Ms. Brennan.
Thank you to Minotaur Books for gifting me a review copy of Cut and Run by Allison Brennan. This book is number 16 in the Lucy Kincaid series, and I have to say I may have benefited from reading some of the earlier books. However, it didn’t stop me from enjoying this one.
There are two cases being investigated in the book, one by FBI agent Lucy Kincaid, the other by investigative reporter Maxine Revere, and the chapters moved between the two. I can’t quite put my finger on why but I enjoyed the chapters featuring Lucy so much more than the ones with Maxine. Perhaps it was a combination of Maxine’s character rubbing me the wrong way, or just that I found the case Lucy was working on to be a lot more interesting. But I had to force myself not to rush through Max’s chapters just to get back to Lucy’s storyline.
I did find myself wishing that the whole book was just Lucy’s chapters, which also would have cut down the 448 pages considerably. But, it is fairly fast-moving and I didn’t want to put it down, so it still gets four stars from me! I’m also looking forward to reading some of the earlier books in the series and getting to know Lucy a little more.
Cut and Run is the 16th book in Allison Brennan’s Lucy Kincaid series. They always say they’re standalone books and you don’t have to read the other novels first but, to be perfectly honest, you miss out on A LOT of backstory and character development if you just jump into a series at book 16.
In this book we have Lucy Kincaid investigating the unearthed remains of a family executed and killed three years ago. But here’s the mystery, they’re a family of five but only four bodies are found. The question is, where is Ricky? Lucy’s investigation is convoluted; as I suspect a lot of white collar crime investigations are. The trail of affairs, embezzlement and family secrets lead us from the Texas corporate world to organized crime and then all the way down to Mexico.
This book also brings back Maxine Revere, from Allison Brennan’s Max Revere series. The two series have crossed paths before and it’s always interesting to bring two strong, independent, competent women together. Max is an investigative reporter and Lucy is an FBI agent, so at times they’re at odds over how far over the line Lucy is willing to go for a case. We have actually seen a lot of growth from Lucy over the course of the series because I feel like earlier in her career she was, and did, cross the line far more than she is willing too now. But ultimately it’s very fulfilling to see these two women join forces to solve these crimes.
There’s a lot happening in this book. Initially Max and Lucy are investigating their own cases until Max realizes their cases are connected. Lucy normally doesn’t investigate white collar crimes, so this was a new aspect for fans of the series. It was a little convoluted and boring, definitely not as interesting or thrilling as some of the other kinds of cases that Lucy (and Max) have investigated.
There was also some familial tension in this book as Lucy is trying to organize a Thanksgiving dinner that her family doesn’t seem to want to attend. I really felt her emotions on this one, I feel like there is still unresolved issues from the last case that Lucy and Max worked together which solved the murder of Lucy’s nephew. There’s also tension between Lucy and Elle and honestly I am completely on Lucy’s side of this. Patrick doesn’t want to do anything without Elle and honestly it’s freakingg grating. Lucy has a thought that if Elle had had a work emergency he would have even skipped her wedding. And based on the way they are being written, it’s a legit thought. After everything that Lucy has been through and experience she just wants her family together for Thanksgiving. I’d be pissed too if my family flaked the way Lucy’s family does. But it is realistic because from my experience and observations, the man’s family always gets the short end of the stick once a woman comes into the picture.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. The case was all over the place and had a little bit of everything, the personal issues were relatable and compelling, and we had Max and Lucy together again. It may not have been my most favourite case of the series but with 16 books they can’t all be your favourite. But it was still a very enjoyable read.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another great book with Lucy taking the lead. It was fun to have Lucy and Max back together figuring out another case. Though this time they are working on different ones. Sean is helping Max in this one. The case is way convoluted and takes a lot to figure everything out. You can read this book as a stand alone but you will get more of background for both Lucy and Max if you read this in order. I would really like a book were Sean helps Lucy like side by side but that's a personal feeling and does not take away from the books at all. This story is well written and makes you second guess everyone. Lucy and Nate work well together and it shows on the pages of the book.
*I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
I really need to read more in this series. This one, while good, didn't wow me, but I really enjoy Lucy, her husband Sean, and their son Jesse as well as Lucy's extended family. She's not a super cop but is a darn good FBI agent. She knows when to cut corners and when not to and is pretty good at working with others. The story itself was overly convoluted for my taste and there were times when I felt like I needed a cheat sheet to keep track of all the relationships, interconnections, and possible motivations. Despite that, I was caught up in the story and curious to see how everything played out.
This book brings together main characters from two different series, Maxine a journalist who digs into cold cases, and Lucy, the FBI agent. They have apparently interacted before though this was my introduction to Max, as she prefers to be called. The story works fine as a stand alone, even if you have read neither of the series before. Any confusion I had was from the story itself, lol. As you might guess, Max's case and Lucy's case, end up intersecting. It takes a while though so be patient. The stories do dovetail.
My heart broke for the young boy Ricky whose family was killed. Brennan did a thoughtful job of portraying him, and doesn't milk him for an emotional response. He's an important part of the story and treated respectfully. Also respectfully handled were the challenges of holidays and family get togethers. It was realistic, not overly dramatized. Lucy's family and relationships helped ground the story, especially when events veered into over the top. And they did. I mean, I'm no white collar crimes specialist but it seemed excessive to me at times. That didn't stop the story from engaging me or prevent my from swiping my Kindle late into the night. Brennan had lots of twists and turns, keeping me guessing all the way through. "Cut and Run" was rarely predictable and definitely a page turner.
My review, with an excerpt, of book 14, Too Far Gone.- https://beasbooknook.blogspot.com/2018/11/review-excerpt-giveaway-too-far-gone-by.html
I loved getting back into the Lucy Kincaid novels. It's one of my favorite series!
When a grave of bones is found, it is revealed to be the Albright family. Denise Alright, accused of embezzleing over 3 million dollars from her company. Thought to have fled to Mexico 3 years earlier. Mom, dad, and two kids are in the Grace. But there are no bones for Ricky, the youngest of the family. 9 years old at the time of the family disappearance.... Was he buried elsewhere or did he survive and had been in hiding for the last 3 years?
Lucy is on the case to find out if Ricky is alive and it gets even bigger. Victoria-best friend of Denise is killed the same day the bones are found.
The case had so many twists and turns and new players are constantly brought into light. It was good though a bit complicated at times.
Thanks for another great book Allison Brennan!
My Allison Brennan collection is extensive and I cannot wait to add a physical copy of Cut and Run to my shelf! This is book #16 in the Lucy Kincaid series and though it is not necessary to read all the others in the series, navigating the cast of characters would certainly be easier with background knowledge. This book totally measures up the rest of the series standards- thrills and mystery, shocks and great characters, and page-turning action. Loved it!
In the latest Lucy Kincaid book, Brennan brings together two of her series characters: Lucy and Max Revere. This is not the first time the two female protagonists have intersected during their individual investigations. While Lucy and her partner, Nate, are investigating bones discovered during a flooding rain belonging to a family of 4, Max and Sean are investigating the murder of a Max' family friend and the accused killer who confessed and now has recanted. Lucy's case involves a murdered family of a woman accused of embezzlement. The problem is that the facts don't add-up for the embezzlement charge and there's a member of the family whose bones were not found in the mass grave. As she and her team seek to find the missing boy and the guilty party, they discover that the boy may have witnessed the killers (including a police officer) and seems to have runaway. Is he still alive? Max has been called by a family friend to find the truth about a murder that seems also to involve embezzlement and the arrest of an innocent man. Eventually, Lucy and Max realize their cases are related, but they each must explore with their unique methods and resources. It's a heart-pounding race to discover the truth.
