This book is geared toward ages four to seven, but I felt it was more appropriate for slightly older children. It claims to be a way for children to study the Bible on their own. But I felt like it was very abstract in spite of its best efforts to teach kids about who Jesus is. Later in the book, the stories and examples started to make a bit more sense in a more concrete, relatable way, but that didn't start until about halfway through.
The directions that they have to follow will have to be read to them by an adult, or at least require some adult guidance. I felt like the effort of drawing certain colors and shapes over words kind of detracted from the topic and would thus make the text harder to read. But that could also be my natural Montessori resistance to such traditional teaching methods. I am flashing back to a homeschool-type program that was used in a religious school I worked at for a while, and even some Sunday School classes.
There is a cute storyline that introduces each lesson, where the kids are excited about learning about Jesus and even make some new friends along the way. Sometimes I could see how it tied in, and then other times not so much. It took some time to build up their story to make sense in the greater context of the book and with the lessons being taught.
While this type of instruction is not necessarily my cup of tea, there is definitely an audience out there for this kind of book, who will enjoy working through it every day. And perhaps it will inspire some desire to look into other stories from the Bible.
Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley.
This is a perfect introductory Bible for kids to learn who Jesus is! It’s simple for them to understand, but will teach them.
This book is a great introduction religion and learning about Jesus. It is child friendly with three characters that you help to learn along the way. You can spend 5/10 minutes at the end of the day reflecting on the words in the book. It teaches children key features of why Jesus is important to us and uses the bible is a very simple way with simple scripture that children would be able to remember. It build up each day revising what you learnt the day before and then introduce more to the part of scripture you are looking at that week.
Jesus, who are you? By Janna Arndt ; Kay Arthur is a Great Bible study for children. This Bible study is solid yet easy and simple enough that a child can learn and have fun going through it. This would be great for any family to use. It would also be great in a Sunday school setting.
First off, Jesus, Who Are You? Names of Jesus by Janna Arndt and Kay Arthur is not a quick reading book. That came as a bit of a surprise for me. It is important to always read on because after the title, it is said, “A Beginner Inductive Bible Study on the Names of Jesus.” The important words are Bible Study, which is devotional-study style for the young. It is also one in which parents need to be involved since this is aimed at children four to seven years of age.
It is set up to have adult reading roles and child activity roles. Tracing words and color recognition are two of the types of activities. Adults do most of the reading which could be intimidating for a child to read on their own even at seven. With that being said, as a family devotional this would be wonderful.
No worries about content, it is all Biblical which you could count on from the authors and publisher. What could be better than starting with who Jesus is? The study starts at Genesis and moves forward. Well Done. Also the illustrations will become as colorful as your child wants them to be. That is part what makes this book interactive.

It is important as Christian parents to teach our children about Jesus. It is also important to give them the tools to discover biblical truths for themselves. I have always enjoyed doing Kay Arthur bible studies because they equipped you to see and discover biblical truths. It is done by the Who, What, Why and When. In studying scripture you mark up your bible that answers they W's of the text. It also keeps you in the context of the scripture as well.
These bible studies for kids are engaging. They engage the heart and the mind of your children. The study introduces your child to a brother and sister and their pet dog to discover who Jesus is. Each day your child is asked the w's and it is repeated by them writing, marking and speaking what they learn. They also have a puzzle, game or activity each week to emphasize what was learned.
What I also liked about this bible study, children from different parts of the world were brought into the discovery. Christianity is about uniting believers together in Christ and this was done seamlessly. Highly recommend.
A Special Thank you to Harvest House Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This study guide has numerous essential scriptures that are important to the development of Christian education. However, I recommend short sessions and supplemental materials for retention. The author takes great care to consider all reader's learning styles. Perfect for the Lenten season!
My Sunday school class uses the precept manor of study each week as we dive into the Bible to read the truths inside. I was so excited to see that a children’s precept study had been created. This is such a fun and unique concept! I love that it gives a children an opportunity to learn more about who Jesus is and is presented in a fun, kid-friendly way! The involvement of the story made it a relatable story for kids, and the kid friendly activities will help them remember what they have learned! I hope to see more of these studies for kids in the future!
This book is an incredible gift to the world. Kay Arthur has been teaching us inductive Bible study for decades and this unique book is an introduction to that for children. Janna and Kay weave together a cute little story of 2 children and their dog who want to learn more about Jesus, some Bible stories and some activities.
This will be an interactive Bible that any child would enjoy. I would encourage parents, teachers, Sunday school teachers and librarians to include this in their collections. This would be a lovely gift for any child, with a list of the supplies Kay recommends in the letter to parents at the beginning.
Some of the transitions between story and Bible are a little clunky, however the book overall is well written and organized. I can't wait to buy this for my daughter and the children in the my life!

From the introduction: Welcome to the Beginner Inductive Bible Study series—inductive Bible Studies that help young children learn how to read and study the Bible for themselves. This series also helps children develop important skills related to colors, shapes, positional concepts, reading, mathematics readiness, and dexterity as they learn God’s Word. Begin each day’s study by reading the brief opening story aloud to the child. Put your finger under each word so the child will learn that words have meaning and are read from left to right. If the child has already learned how to read, let the child read the story aloud to you.
From chapter one: “Hi! My name is Cooper, and this is my sister, Callie. This is our dog, Kate. Callie and I love Kate. “Kate can do funny things. She loves to sniff out clues and lick our faces. Watch out! Kate will lick your face too! “Kate wants to help us learn about Jesus. Do you know WHO Jesus is? “We do, and we want you to know Jesus too.
This book serves as an introduction to the inductive bible study method. Perhaps parents are already familiar with this method--the method has been around for decades now. Perhaps parents are NEW to the method/system. Either way, this book serves as a way to introduce bible study to little ones. According to the introduction, this book is both for children who are young enough NOT to be reading yet AND for children who are reading for themselves.
The book is a blend: a fiction story book, an interactive activity book/workbook, and nonfiction. Each day offers a story framework. A handful of children are learning about Jesus by reading specific Scripture texts--nearly all if not all--from the gospel of John. They are asking QUESTIONS of the text, and answering those questions with the text. Little ones are prompted to answer these questions and learn alongside these fictional children.
I have not used the inductive bible study method before. IN all honesty, I've been intimidated, timid, hesitant to mark up a bible with a system that may or may not be easy for me to use, process, understand. I think this one written with very young children in mind does a good job of clarifying it. Though I am sure it is much more complex than this if you look at the whole system. Mainly this one is focusing on who Jesus is.
What you see is what you get with this one.
Listen. This book is phenomenal. I have a highly intelligent and inquisitive two and a half year old. He asks all the questions. And this book has all the answers.
Beautifully written. This book answers basic questions such as: “Who is Jesus?” “What is the Bible and why is it important?” “What is prayer?”
I’m excited to use this tool to facilitate a love of Jesus and Gods word in my children’s lives.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This book is a fantastic activity book for chikdren as a starting point to learning about Jesus, God and the bible.
I feel this book would make a brilliant resource at a Sunday school or even in early years at primary school for RE.
Lots of activities are included in this book and it is a work book as well as a story book. The book is split into weekly sections with a segment for each day of each of the weeks.
I think this book is a refreshing change to how we teach young children about Jesus and the bible.
Interesting concept with lots of potential. However, I find the storylines confusing the sections start with a heading abut God and jump into littles stories of Callie, Cooper, and kate the dog, before returning to the lesson points. Callie, Cooper, and Kate then meet other children and learn about other countries before learning the day's lesson about God. This will confuse a 4-7-year-old child as they need simple facts and storylines to learn. There are also activities in each section which the children will enjoy.
This book is being published near the date of my God-daughter's birthday and I read it hoping it would make a nice gift for her.
It is sweet, approachable, informative and interactive. It would be perfect for churches to use for Sunday School classes!
