The Paris Children centres around Madeleine Levy, a young Jewish woman that lives in France during WWII. As the story unfolds we find out the her Grandfather fought in WWI and was a famous and outspoken supporter of the Jewish people. Because of how we’ll know he was the entire family is in danger from the Nazi’s. This is a very upsetting and emotional story of the French Jewish Resistance. Everyday Madeleine put herself in extreme danger to help the children that had lost their parents. The numerous things she did showed how brave and devoted she was to the children and the cause.
This book is fiction yet based on a real person. It is told more through a narrative instead of through action and this made the book slow and difficult to get in to. There were so many amazing things that each of the characters did on a daily basis that could have been told differently to draw a person in. While the story as heartbreaking the manner of writing made this just an average book. I’m sorry to say that as Madeleine deserves to have her story heard.

This story is breathtakingly beautiful and follows the story of Madeleine Levy. She worked tirelessly for the Resistance as Nazi officers, Vichy, and Gestapo occupied France. I really enjoyed this novel, as a history fan of all things WWII. I wish I was more versed in this information prior to reading this book.
This is a story of hope, love, courage in the face of true tribulation. This hardship rages across Europe in the early 1940’s as the regime of Hitler swept through. A yellow star sewn into clothing of men, women, and children identifying them as Jews.
I loved the way Gloria wrote this story. I felt connected to Madeleine and I wanted her to succeed in all of her efforts. Women do not get the credit they deserve for their actions during World War II no matter what country they originate.
This is a story that is a must read. You will smile, you will laugh, and you will cry. However, those are the emotions that evoke a deep understanding of the time frame and the story that surrounds it.
This novel is set to publish in September 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣. I plan to purchase this story when it becomes available.

Madeline, at the age of seventeen loses her grandpa Alfred Dreyfus, with whom she shared a special bond. She is a very ambitious young lady, who craves independence and “a career vested with meaning that might, in some small way, make the world a better place.”
Her grandpa was known for charitable actions, supporting the refugees from Eastern Europe. Now, she is on a mission to help Jewish families fleeing Germany.
I was very much interested in her story. However, this story is being described in words instead of being presented in action, which is not an engaging style of writing. The story lists a lot of details, not all of them necessary, rather than focusing how it’s being presented. It is very slow in plot development.

I loved this biofiction about a young girl named Madeleine Levy. Madeleine loses her hearing at a young age but has learned how to read lips and can communicate very well. At a young age Madeleine dedicates her life along with her sister Simone and her good friend Claude to saving the Jewish children. She puts her life in jeopardy in occupied France for helping a lot of Jewish people. Her sister Simone who she is very close to is a master of forging fake identification papers and documents containing identifications that are false to help the cause. They are all part of the French resistance trying to thwart Hitler's campaign on killing as many Jewish people as he can.
This story had a very authentic and scary setting of occupied France by Germany. Danger lurked everywhere as many French citizens who tried to help save Jewish families who were ripped apart by the Gestapo who was everywhere. It was disturbing on the same token how many people in France could not be trusted because they turned against people in their own Country to help the Nazi's. It became very difficult to know who to trust.
This story was heartbreaking and Madeleine Levy and her friend Claude and sister Simone were very heroic. I loved these characters and worried about their safety throughout the whole narrative. They were very noble and passionate about saving the Jewish children and smuggling them out of France as many Jewish children were displaced. Madeleine Levy and Claude and Simone were constantly putting their lives in jeopardy to save these children.
I would highly recommend reading this book if you enjoy reading about noble people who fought Hitler's killing machine and tried to sabotage his efforts to wipe out as many Jewish people in occupied France during World War II. These people were so brave and parts of this story is inspired by real factual history. We must never forget the vile and heartless acts of Hitler and his Nazi's to eradicate innocent people whose only crime was their ethnicity. This book was a fresh and original story about the young and helpless Jewish children in France and the kindness of those who tried to make a difference often putting their lives at risk. Enjoyable is the wrong word to describe reading this but it does offer hope of mankind resisting histories darkest enemies. I did love this book and loved the character's.

Thank you so much Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read The Safe Place! I enjoyed this one! Right off the bat the cover got me so beautiful) and I was excited to read a story set in a different country, especially at a time when most of the world has to stay home! Great character development and wonderful writing! Highly recommend!
Thanks to NetGalley for this free ARC (publication date: September 4, 2020) of this historical fiction novel.
This honest book review is my own.
Based on the true story of Madeleine Lévy (granddaughter of Alfred Dreyfus, Jewish World War I hero), this is the fight of the French Resistance when the Nazis overtook France. Madeleine knew the risks, but wanted to fight for what was right - helping bring Jewish children to safety and to resist the hatred taking over her beloved country by all means accessible to her.
If you research this real-life woman (and it's also in the prologue), you know this story is tragic. But, even against the darkest hours, it shows the power of hope and the power of fighting back.
It was a beautiful but very sad book, and this author wrote a lovely tribute to a very brave woman.

What a beautiful story! I absolutely loved the Paris Children by Gloria Goldreich. This book was inspired by the true story of a countries fight for survival during WWII. During this time, Paris was full of frightened, starving, and abandoned children. Madeleine Levy steps up as a guardian, and offers these poor innocent children love and protection during such devastating times. She never gives up, and shows everyone her unwavering strength and courage. I enjoy historically based novels and highly recommend this book!
I have read several book in the past month on Holocaust and the French resistance, based on true people/happenings but was very intrigued by this story as I have never known about the Jewish scouts or the Jewish French resistance and the huge part they played in saving Jewish children and committing sabotage. The characters are solid alive, causing one to have empathy for them. The action moves along quickly but still the story spends time developing the relationships within this Jewish family and how courageous they are. Based on a true woman, Madeline Levy, you are captivated by her determination, stamina and love, pulling all the time for her relationship with Claude. Family relationships so strong you feel part of them. Here is a part of history I was not familiar with and the courage it took for Madeline and others to smuggle the Jewish children to Spain or Switzerland until reaching Palestine.
Brimming with historical insight and references!
This story takes place during WWII and when Hitler was in power. Madeleine Levy, our protagonist and heroine of the novel, is in the resistance. She is also a protector of lost children.
I've always marveled at the courage and bravery shown by individuals throughout the War. With the full knowledge of the consequences of their actions, they still push through and do what is right. This book is a novel of hope, valor, and inspiration. It's a novel about doing the right thing in the face of immense novel. Ultimately, it's a story of compassion for others and love.
The Paris Children by Gloria Goldreich is an excellent historical fiction that focuses on some of the Jewish Resistance groups in France that helped coordinate and smuggle Jewish children out of harm’s way and into safer countries. Madeleine Levy is a fearless young woman who has a heart of gold. She and her friend and eventual partner, Claude Lehmann, risked their lives over and over again selflessly to save others. I will stop there so that I so not give away the ending, but it was bittersweet for certain.
Madeleine was so brave, and I have a hard time imagining all of the terrifying things that she went through, and sacrificed. She even was able to do all of this despite the fact that she lost most of her hearing after experiencing Scarlet fever as a child. I was awed. There world truly needs more women like her.
This book is for anyone that enjoys historical fiction, strong female characters, and reading about resistance groups during WWII. Excellent book.

It barely seems possible, so many were killed in the War to end all Wars, how can there be talk of another? Madeleine Levy’s Jewish grandfather was a hero during that first terrible war, now as the Nazis march into Paris, Madeleine has a chance to be a hero herself. She sees terrified, hollow-eyed children all over the city, refugees from Germany and Hitler’s final solution. Unable to look away, she begins taking children in and smuggling them to safety. Claude, the young resistance fighter she’s fallen in love with, works tirelessly by her side in a world gone mad. How can anyone be expected to retain their sanity, let alone their compassion and grace? A deeply affecting story of our world in its darkest hours and those who were brave enough to rise above it
This book was so good! The characters were so well rounded, you felt like you actually knew them! The plot was so good you didn't want the book to end!
Although there are many books written about this disturbing period of time, the viewpoint in this novel is wonderful. From friendships to betrayals and then the comparison to contemporary times, makes us look at our actions in both times of calm and times of horrors.
