I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This was a great non-fiction book about the Stanley Cup playoffs, the best championship in all of the sports. Lots of great information and I really appreciated that they included women hockey too.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs!
5 shut outs out of 5!

The 2020 playoffs being missed in April due to the NHL being brought to a screeching halt in March with Covid-19 was heartbreaking. Hockey is life! Fortunately, my hockey loving 10 year old daughter and I were able to read and review The Stanley Cup Playoffs by Matt Doeden!

The book, aimed at children's non-fiction readers, provided a colourful and informative history of the origins of hockey and it's iconic trophy, the Stanley Cup. The book also provides some interesting tid-bits and milestone events in hockey's history including key changes to game play, rules and regulation, and shifts related to safety such as helmets and on-ice violence. I appreciated these last pieces as a hockey mom who worries about concussions and potential for violence.

What stood out most for my daughter was the inclusion of women in hockey! She really liked reading about women's journey within the sport and was excited to learn of the connection between the Isobel Cup and the Stanley Cup dynasty! We would have loved to have seen a feature on some of women's hockey greats and how women are changing the landscape in hockey and the NHL.

Overall, the book was engaging and provided new factoids to keep it fresh and interesting. The Stanley Cup Playoffs is sure to please hockey fans, big and small, and sweep the fall series of children's non-fiction releases - bar down!

Thank you to NetGalley and Millbrook Press for the electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! Fans new to the sport and fans with all the information will get a indepth look at the past and present related to hockey. Who was Lord Stanley? What were the best saves/miracle victories? How did the NHL form and where could it be headed? The few comprehensive sections make the information accessible to readers and not intimidating to new fans. There is plenty of indepth information and anecdotes for the avid fan as well. Lots of great photos and layouts make you realize the rich tradtions of the sport!

Cool book for hockey fans or for people who just want to learn about the history of the Stanley Cup - which is both for me - I love hockey and want to learn about the Stanley Cup. Good book.

This was a pretty fun book about the Stanley Cup, and hockey history. I love reading old hockey stories and learned a few new ones from this book. I also love seeing old hockey photos and appreciated those as well.

As a long-time hockey fan who played women's hockey in high school and has become disenchanted with the NHL due to the violence and sexism in the league, I personally very much appreciated the inclusion of women's hockey in the "other leagues" section, and the inclusion of the fact that the NHL is going to have to reckon with CTE sooner or later, whether they want to or not. I appreciated the emphasis on the fact that the old rules (or lack of rules) about helmets and fights were, quite frankly, terrible.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. This would probably be a pretty good gift for a hockey-loving friend or family member out there.
