Truthfully I didn't expect to like this book, because so many keto books just are not great. I was happily wrong. The recipes are solid and tasty, and this is worth picking up.
I had tried other Keto cookbooks, but my wife and I tended to hate how we felt after eating the meals, this one was more palatable, but this may be due to the fact that we live a mostly vegetarian lifestyle.
Borrowed Book By: After unfortunately misunderstanding you cannot request a print copy of a book listed on NetGalley (even if there is an 'other format' listed on the book's page) I started to request the books I erred on requesting in early 2020 per each release date to see if my library could purchase a copy for me to read in print. Thereby I have rectified this error and have read the print edition of this title and thereby am offering my honest review on its behalf. My library thankfully purchased this on my behalf per my request. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.
I could relate to what Whitney was speaking about in the Introduction about trying different variants of eating vegan and/or vegetarian; including raw vegan. It is a small world when it comes to eating healthy and all routes towards wellness tend to come into your life when your seeking alternatives to reduce the issues you're facing yourself for your own sustainable health and wellness long term. Therefore, I could definitely understand the long journey towards finding which combinations of foods agree with your physiology and your own biology - as foods have a way of either dividing our health into different components of unwellness or they enable us to self-heal and recover from the processed foods which seek to clog our systems with bouts of unwellness. I, for one, appreciate finding the foods which not just agree with me on a cellular level but to find the foods which can enrich my life with better vitality. It was refreshing to read her journey and realise others are on the same path I am whilst attempting to sort out which variants of vegan and vegetarianism is a better module of health for each of us.
I definitely have a deep appreciation for vegan foods - I have long held an aversion to traditional milk and have fallen in love with almond, coconut and other milk alternatives which are gentler on my system as I can process them easier than regular milk. Hemp milk is used in this cookbook and I admit, I haven't yet sampled this version of milk myself but intend too! I even love how you can have vegan cheese though I haven't truly explored that area of it yet. I oft lament I could survive on guacamole because I have a serious addiction to avocado! Reading about how using a vegan keto diet is in celebration of the foods I am naturally drawn towards eating is in harmony with how I desire to shift back into decompressing my diet from being an omnivore back into a herbivore on a vegan and gluten-free spectrum for health reasons.
I am also a firm believer in how we combine our foods can either seek to increase our wellness and/or distract from our pursuit of wellness because different foods and ingredients can have a negative effect on our health as much as anything else in our local environment.
What truly intrigued me with further study and interest is how adapting to a keto diet (of any kind) can help with heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure; as two of these run in my family. I had known about the benefits of coconut oil when it comes to dementia and stroke patients but I hadn't connected the dots to understand how keto can help reverse or heal a mind which suffered from stroke or a body wrought with the after effects of high blood pressure. It makes sense to me you can heal your ailments through food because a lot of what makes us ill first starts with what we eat and where we live (ie. environmental elements out of our control). It was most encouraging to consider you can reduce your risk and/or come back from both the ailments which otherwise can erode your wellness over the latter half of your life.
I wasn't surprised to learn you have to take into consideration using a keto diet of whichever variety you choose should be used in moderation. Like most good things we enjoy in life, moderation is the key to most of them. I definitely understood how you have to find a way to strike the balance between what is healthy for your body and what is adversely redirecting your efforts to the negative. I was thankful they mentioned seeking self-tests to guide your progress on a vegan keto diet but also outlining the issues by staying in what they call ketosis for too long of a period of time.
There are always checks and balances in life and this diet is not an exception to that philosophy. You have to intuit what is right for you and for you body; to find which foods and which combinations are agreeable to you and then, through self-checks (or your doctor) you can sort out a healthier path with keto which positively effects your current state of health rather than become a deterrent towards your own self-goals.
This cookbook is a handy resource guide - outlining the steps you need to re-buy the necessities for your kitchen and pantry whilst also providing a glimpse into meal prep and planning. Again they put a lot of weight on thinking ahead about your food combinations and outlining which foods and carbs work best to harmonically re-set your internal and external balance on a keto vegan diet. I appreciated the extra work they took to do this as it is helpful when changing how you look at food and how food can work for you as your striving towards a path of personal wellness.
I personally love cookbooks with photographs (which this includes!) and with easy to understand recipes which immediately give you confidence to use the ingredients and cook/bake the recipes provided. I felt the authors of this cookbook took the extra mile towards endeavouring to give us a guidebook to follow and a healthy footprint to strive towards. I know I will be re-borrowing this throughout the Autumn and Winter seeking to pull more knowledge out of food combining and which foods would be best for the season I will be purchasing produce from at the farmer's markets. In essence, this is perfect for home cooks who love to eat seasonally!
I love how I could have this on hand in my kitchen - ready for me when I need to re-address where I am with keto and easily set my market list to the ingredients I need to fetch per each recipe I will be cooking next! It is a wonderful discovery and one I look forward to using in earnest. One day I will purchase a copy for myself as I'd love to have it in my growing cookbook library!
Recipes I want to make include: Gazpacho, Buddha bowl and Shepard's pie.
Lots of great delicious and easy to follow recipes. Highly recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
What a great cookbook! The material is well written and presented in an easy to follow manner. I look forward to trying out several of these recipes.
I recommend this cookbook for any vegan that is considering Keto. Keto can be very dangerous and it is essential to know your nutrition prior to taking on a Keto diet. This will prepare you in every way to maintain your preferred Vegan eating and remain healthy. This is a contemplation of healthy receipes that anyone can easily prepare. The format is nicely presented and it is a pleasure to read.
I love to review cookbooks with healthy recipes! Although I am neither vegan nor keto, I do love to eat a healthy plant-based diet and appreciated these recipes. The recipes are clean, nutritious, easy to prepare and utilize ingredients that are readily available. I look forward to making the Herb Garden Dressing, Chia Parfait, PB&J Overnight Hemp, Tuscan "Quiche" Bites and Market Veggie Tofu Scramble.
Thank you, Callisto Media and NetGalley, for a digital ARC!
I found that I have one of the best keto cookbooks in my possession, so this one didn't do anything for me.
I’m mostly vegan sometime vegetarian . But I have been intrigued by the Keto Diet which some many people have tried . Being a non meat eater it was always a no for me. I’m so happy this book came along fir Vegans ! Full of tips and delicious recipes you have everything you need here in one book !
I'm not specifically following a vegan or ketogenic diet, but I enjoy cookbooks, and I am trying to add in cleaner recipes, so I was happy to read this book. There's a lot of information in this book, and a number of yummy-sounding (and looking) recipes. I look forward to trying a number of them. There's a nice variety,s o most people are likely to find recipes that interest them. There is a weekly meal plan layout, which is nice for people looking for some organization on how to begin. I do wish each item had had photos.
This is a great cookbook for anyone doing keto vegan or not! The book has great information and it is full of great recipes. The pictures are very pretty. Keto is very meat and dairy heavy for lots of people so it's nice to have options to change it up! I would definitely recommend!
I received this ARC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
I have been following a ketogenic diet for about six months. I have honestly never felt better and I really do enjoy this way of eating. However, I do find that this diet is incredibly meat heavy and there are times I am just looking for a change. I try very hard to be living a more sustainable lifestyle and I know that includes conscious choices in food. That is why I was so drawn to this book. An opportunity to stay on the diet while still enjoying meatless/dairy-free meals.
The recipes in this book are easy to understand and are incredibly tasty. I have made several meals and snacks and have been really pleased with everything I tried. I really liked the meal plan ideas and lists, and there are some great ideas for substitutes of other products.
The only negative I find with the book are the net carb counts are a little high for some of the recipes. Depending on how strict you are on your macros, you may not be able to enjoy everything without being careful of serving size.
That should definitely not stop anyone from trying this. It is a worthwhile, well constructed, and thoughtful cookbook. The recipes are varied and there are options for lots of cravings. A total winner for a vegan, but great for omnivores as well!
I have been doing ket5off and on for a while. I gave never truly been able to commit fully to the life change. I think a great deal of it has been finding the right recipes because my family doesn't want to keto with me. This book is packed with meals they will eat and I can easily add a few sides to create meals the compromise to all of our food desires. I also felt the book is very well laid out and informative. I enjoyed the personal story that is honest and not overkill. I believe this personal experience to find the best diet for them. I highly recommend this diet to anyone keto even if your not vegetarian because this book has great recipes that if desired could easily accompany baked chicken or fish. I found plenty of recipes that I will make on a regular basis. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
I thought this was a great animal free take on the ketogenic diet. Sometimes it cam feel incredibly meat heavy so it is good to see a book that focuses on the other side of things. I need more veggies in my diet so I was hoping to find some recipe that appeal to me, a meat eater, amd I dod find a few here.
Synopsis: This book is perfect for those who want to be vegan and try a Keto diet at the same time.
What I liked: I liked the weekly meal plan layout, the recipe choices and organization, the facts and myth debunking for Keto/Vegan diets, and food to avoid vs. food to have chart.
What I disliked: Similar to the last recipe I really would have liked more photos. I also felt like some recipes called for conversions or measurements that were not as easily as described and would have liked either tips included in those recipes or different recipes all together.
What I made: Avocado Boats with Flax Crackers! They took a variety of ingredients (some I had to go to the store for specifically), but were pretty easy to make once I measured out all the ingredients. I also liked that this was a no bake recipe and I didn’t have to worry about using my oven to prepare them.
The Vegan Ketogenic Diet Cookbook is a tutorial cookbook and recipe collection for plant based keto. Due out 11th Feb 2020 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 176 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats (ebook available now). It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
Each of the recipes includes an introductory description, ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (only US measurements given, with a metric conversion chart in the appendix), and step by step instructions. The nutritional info provided includes calories, fat, sodium, cholesterol, carbs, fiber, and protein . Very few of the recipes are photographed, which is a shame, but the photos which are included are clear and well done. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate. Special notes about the recipes (nut free, gluten free, etc) are listed in the header bars at the beginning of each individual recipe. There is also a good bibliography and interactive links section but no index.
I liked the inclusion of a chapter with two complete weekly meal plans (and linked recipes). The meal plans include information about preparation, serving sizes, complete shopping lists, and other info.
The recipe ingredients themselves are easily sourced and will be available at most well stocked grocery or health food stores.
Four stars. I have some reservations about some information contained in the book (drinking cider vinegar does not, thankfully, 'alkalize' your body. Our bodies are remarkably adept at homeostasis and you can't substantially affect the pH of any of your independent systems (gut, blood, etc) at least not by ingesting a teaspoon of cider vinegar once in a while, however tasty).
That being said, these recipes, especially the sauces and dips, are really tasty and well developed. I just tried out the Thai-Style peanut sauce over cauli-rice and it's absolutely delicious.
