Ella Watson. Wealthy middle-class woman and wife to Thomas and mother to two children goes jogging in the middle of the afternoon in a chilly November day in Potton Park in Penrith. But she never returns home because she is randomly stabbed to death. There is no motive for her death. Then just a mile away on a rundown housing estate called Beacon Estate, full of gangs, hooded hoodlums and drugs. A young girl Keira Bradley is also stabbed and left to die on the estate. Was this gang related?
Feeling refreshed after returning from Florida Keys DI Kelly Porter is the SIO on the case. With her loyal team she starts to investigate the two murders. Are they linked in some way? But during the investigation there are problems with some members of her team and her boss Superintendent Ormond keeps pressure on Kelly. He doesn’t like her and just wants to hurry her up and close the case. So, Kelly doesn’t know what really is going on, on the Beacon Estate. What is he hiding?
Dam Rachel Lynch has done it again. Little doubt is the 7th book in the D.I. Kelly Porter series and with each book the series gets better and better. This is another brilliant instalment in the series. I like how the author is current to today society and highlights the problems in her work. This had a great storyline and characters and I liked the little cliff-hanger at the end. I can’t wait for the next instalment.
The seventh novel from Rachel Lynch featuring DI Kelly Porter. Kelly has her hands full when a white middle class woman is stabbed to death on Potton Park in the Lake District with no motive and on a nearby housing estate, a mixed race girl is also stabbed to death. To Kelly's dismay, her boss is more focused on the killing of the Potton Park murder as he was friends with the dead woman, Ella Watson and her husband. With her trusty team, Kelly set about solving both murders. A stand alone novel with regulars, Ted, her dad and Johnny her boyfriend. A great read and I loved the police procedurals. A must read.
I absolutely love the Kelly Porter series each book seems to get better .Two woman are found fatally stabbed one, Ella Watson who was out jogging and is someone who seems to have it all and Keira Bradley who lived on a run down housing estate, are they linked somehow ?Kelly just back from a holiday is investigating the murders but is hampered by her superior Superintendent Osmond who doesn't seem to like Kelly and is looking for a quick result.I liked all the characters I really felt I knew them the story was so compelling I found it hard to put down .The ending was a surprise ! Can't wait to read the next book in the series .Many thanks to the Publisher the Author and NetGalley for my review copy in return for an honest review .
This is a really good series featuring some great characters. A tricky case for DI Kelly Porter ,hindered by problems with her team and from her superior officer. A great read.
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Canelo for the ARC.
This is Book #7 in the DI Kelly Porter series and I've loved every one of them! Excellent writing and dialogue carries you through a somewhat contemporary storyline with surprising twists. Totally absorbing.
It's a crisp November day in Cumbria, Kelly and partner Johnny have returned from their holiday in Florida and Kelly and her team have to start a murder enquiry. Ella Watson, a well-off, middle-aged housewife, has been found on a jogging path in a park near Penrith in the middle of the day. She'd been stabbed twice. The scene is not far from the Beacon Estate - high-rise blocks, hooded young men, drugs and gangs. Was this a gang-initiation task or a professional 'hit'?
As the plot unfolds Kelly begins to realise just what a no-go area the Estate has become and starts to question the policing policies and personal views of Superintendent Neil Ormond at HQ. Something is not quite right - least of all that he insists on taking a personal interest in the case as he's played golf with Ella's husband Thomas.
The investigation raises more questions and answers, especially when a teenaged girl is found stabbed at the Beacon Estate the next day.
This is a story of two environments connected by fatal stabbings; of biased attitudes and police corruption, and Kelly's determination to be unbiased and uncover the truth. Has she a spy on her team?
It is also a story of people coming together with a common purpose - no longer prepared to put up with the gangs controlling their lives - they deserved better!
This is a totally absorbing read although I found it to be a bit heavy on the police procedural and social comment side of things compared to the author's previous books, but there are twists and surprises - both ominous and feel-good.
Thoroughly recommended
I love all of the Kelly Porter series and this was no disappointment.
Gang culture is not my favourite topic, but it was handled well and did not overwhelm the book.
Looking forward to the next instalment in Kelly’s life
Book 7 of the Kelly Porter series and just as much a page turner as the rest
2 random stabbings in broad daylight of a businesswoman from a well to do background and a young girl from the well known council estate leave Kelly and her team scrabbling for a reason as to why these two relative strangers, but although her team are supportive someone is trying to trip Kelly up......
Two seemingly unrelated murders of women from completely opposite backgrounds plunge DI Kelly Porter into the murky world of inner housing gang culture versus police corruption at the higher end of the scale.. Can she solve these cases and in doing so save her job and expose the criminals is uniform. Another cracking story from a highly accomplished author.
Ella Watson had it all and she knew it. A loving husband, wealthy enough to take early retirement in his forties, two loving children and a beautiful house in the Lake District, unfortunately none of it is enough to stop her being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Keira Bradley isn't as fortunate as Ella, the only thing they have in common is the way they died, but she had a mother who loved her and will stop at nothing to make sure her girl isn't overlooked as the police begin two murder enquires.
DI Kelly Porter has hardly had time to unpack from her Florida holiday with boyfriend Johnny when she is called to Ella's murder scene and then has to tell her devastated husband what happened. Before twenty four hours have passed she is on the notorious Beacon Estate, one of the more dangerous areas her team covers, watching her back as she tries to break through the hatred and mistrust everyone there seems to feel towards the police.
Once again Ms Lynch has written a first class book which covers the explosion in knife attacks and their fall out but it is also a story about the strength of family and how, whatever your environment, it can define you. Add to this a changing work environment and betrayal at the heart of all Kelly holds dear and you have a gripping, page turning story of the highest quality. The tension increases steadily and even though many things are intentionally revealed throughout, the final chapters are still filled with the excitement and danger fans of Ms Lynch have come to expect. The familiar protagonists are all present and correct but this time the new or secondary characters are far more involved and integral to the cases to be solved.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading murder mysteries of the highest quality as this definitely ticks all the boxes.
Book 7 of Kelly Porter series.
After a slow start the book picks up pace.
Kelly is investigating the murder of two women but is being hampered by other police officers.
Superintendent Ormond, her superior gets involved and pressurises Kelly to get a quick result.
Ella Watson, a wealthy woman, is stabbed whilst out jogging.
Keira Bradley from the local Beacon housing estate is also stabbed to death.
Are these murders related and if so, how?
Kelly investigates the local drug dealers despite not being convinced Keira’s death is not a run of the mill killing.
The current press focus on stabbings in the UK is highlighted here - showing how easy it is to kill someone with a kitchen knife and is quite disturbing.
There is also a focus on poverty, hopelessness and child abuse.
Kelly carries on her investigation, despite being thwarted by other officers.
A good read but not my favourite Kelly Porter novel.
Ella Watson, a wealthy mum of two is randomly stabbed in broad daylight in a nearby park while out running. Later that same day Keira Bradley, who lives on the Estate meets the same fate. DI Kelly Porter is running the two cases side by side. Her boss is obstructing her at every turn and no one on the housing estate is speaking out for fear of reprisals.
As ever she is determined to find justice for both victims. It blows her for six when she finds a traitor in the ranks. It’s a fast paced story with many twists and turns and as ever I found this story riveting and totally unputdownable and can’t wait for book #8.
Another great book in the DI Kelly Porter series.
Well written and captures your attention from the start through to the end.
Touches on some topical subjects so its pretty true to life.
Bit of a surprise at the end.
Enjoy :)
Thanks to Netgalley, Rachel Lynch and Canelo for the ARC
After coming back from holiday DI Kelly Porter s called out to a stabbing of a middle class woman running in a park in Penrith. This s an unusual crime as it happened in the middle of the day when there were plenty of people around and the victim was the wife of a retired businessman with no links to criminals and she still had her valuables on her. But unknown to Kelly the repercussions from this crime would be far reaching.
How to say that Rachel Lynch gets better with each book in this series and I found this book very hard to put down it is addictive the characters so believable you get drawn into their lives desperate to find out what happens next. Loved it.
Little doubt is a really good read in this crime thriller series set in the Lake District involving D.I. Kelly Porter.
Ella, the wife of a rich businessman is out jogging when she is stabbed twice fatally in broad daylight where there were no witnesses and no apparent motive. Meanwhile on a rundown housing estate full of social problems, drug abuse and yob rule a 17 year old girl is viciously attacked and murdered after being stabbed repeatedly
D I Porter has the unenviable job of investigating these murders, life is good for her now, settled with her partner who couldn’t be more supportive. At work her colleagues admire her working hard and are loyal to her.
It soon becomes apparent that there are forces at work trying to scupper the investigation and blame Kelly as it unravels. She soon realises there is a traitor close to home at work.
A really good read that unwinds with breathless intensity as all manner of secrets are revealed. A cast of characters good bad and downright evil that have a well rounded depth to them. Satisfying and page turning, an excellent well executed thriller.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
I was delighted to receive the latest Rachel Lynch book as a pre-publication copy to review. I have read all of the Kelly Porter series and they just get better and better.
This one too is set in the North West largely in Penrith. Kelly has to deal with two knife deaths, very different but clearly connected. In the process of investigation, she also comes across corruption in her own team, corruption linking back to previous cases and the angst and grief of the family of one of the victims.
Running parallel to the main story as the series develops are the relationships of the main characters, Kelly and her partner and their growing collection of family and friends. Most of the book takes place over four days, it is fast paced and gripping.
I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series and I'm already looking forward to the next one.
Wonderful, fantastic and heaps of praise i just loved this book !!
Yayyyy here we are back again with book 7 of the wonderful Kelly Porter series and each and every one of these books has been amazing and of course this one is no exception.
It’s starts with a random stabbing in broad daylight in a park in Penrith and seems that there is no motive, this was a well to do mother of two out for a jog who seems to have been killed for no reason. Kelly is quickly on the case when later in the day another fatal stabbing occurs this time a young woman from a well known housing estate and these two victims couldn’t be more different.
With Kelly then dealing with both these crimes amidst much discontent on the housing estate and what seems to be someone on her team who is not to be trusted she really has her work cut and from then on we are treated to an absolutely excellent police procedural that rips along with a gripping storyline.
As always I can’t fault anything that Rachel Lynch writes she has this wonderful ability to keep you hooked from the start and the character of Kelly Porter is one of my favourites and what a damn ending this book has leaving me desperately impatient for book 8, many thanks Rachel for a fabulous read.
So 5+ big fat stars and highly recommended both this book and the whole series.
My thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
D I Kelly Porter with her usual lack of respect for her inadequate superiors impresses her team with her uncanny ways of bringing her case to a satisfactory conclusion.. Another great story line from Rachel Lynch but without giving any of the plot away could this be her last case for a while?
I doubt it was daffodils DI Kelly Porter was thinking of when she saw the crowds near Wordsworth Tower on the Beacon Estate. In this hard hitting detective thriller we witness at first hand the slaying of a woman by unknown assailants in a seemingly random attack. We live the grief and guilt of ‘if only’ as the family come to terms with never seeing their mother or wife again. It was a powerful piece of writing made chillingly realistic by not having a parallel story about the assailants for about a third of the book. The hopelessness of the residents of the Beacon Estate and the indifference of the police to their plight may make some sit up. Despite what we are told, there are police ‘no-go’ areas especially in big cities, at least one’s in uniform.
Little Doubt this is one of Rachel Lynch’s strongest novels in the DI Kelly Porter series.
I’m sure this is a function of auto-correct in my pre-release copy but I doubt a nerdy computer geek like Rob would have little use for logarithms, algorithms maybe!
