OMG! This book drained me emotionally! But in a good way. How is that even possible?
Dom is in a weird Groundhog Day loop, having to relive the day that his ex-fiancée dies. The very first time that it happened, I was devastated. And then shocked that Dom, and I, had to do it all again. Each day, he tries to change what he does and how he reacts to the events in his life, hoping for a better outcome. And each day he, and I, are destroyed.
How to Save a Life is a unique story, unlike any that I have ever read. Even though it was heartbreaking to witness Mia dying day after day, I wouldn't have missed this one for the world. Liz and Lisa continually create amazing stories that knock my socks off. You definitely need to add this one to your reading list!
A fresh new experience, without Bill Murray. The idea is very similar to Groundhog Day, living the same day over and over again. While he’s trying to save his friend from dying each day he’s learning new things about himself. I really enjoyed the creativity and excitement the authors gave the story. It’s a different experience to read the perspective of the man, the thought process is just a little bit different. It’s always a pleasure to read their books, a unique experience with exciting characters and thrilling storylines. My copy came from Netgalley and my review is given voluntarily.
I dare you to read How to Save a Life and figure out a way to get The Fray song out of your head.
Dom bumps into his old love Mia at a coffee shop, the one he let get away, the one he never got over. She agrees to go out with him, and he’s sure this is his chance to fix the biggest mistake of his life. On their date, Mia dies in a horrible accident. Dom is devastated until he wakes up the next morning to find out he’s reliving the day. He’s sure he’s supposed to save the love of his life, but what if he’s wrong?
I went through my own version of the 5 stages of grief with this book. First, I didn’t love Dom. No spoilers, but I didn’t understand his obsession with Mia given the circumstances of their breakup. Then I started to like him, hoping he’d figure out the key to his time loop entrapment. Then I started to suspect some outlandish theories about Mia. Maybe she was a time witch? Maybe this was all a revenge plot gone horribly wrong (or horribly right?). Then I kind of figured out where things were going, and with it came acceptance that sometimes the ending I get isn’t the ending I want.
How to Save a Life really kept me on my toes, which was a good thing. It’s a hard book to characterize. You say Groundhog Day, I hear romantic comedy. This book isn’t that. You say second chance romance, and I’m all in, but that’s not really what this is. I’ve heard this characterized as a suspense book, and while it is suspenseful, I don’t think that’s accurate either. This is more a coming of age in your 30s book, and I think it will appeal to fans of You Were There Too. Ultimately for me, it was a little too sad, but I know a lot of people will love that.
I’m so excited to discuss How to Save a Life with the #BLCVIPBookClub later this month. Thank you to @bookishladiesclub, @netgalley, @lakeunionpublishing, and the authors for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was a little leery of the Groundhog Day aspect of this book, repeating Thursday over and over again. I didn't want to read the same thing repeatedly, but I shouldn't have worried. Yes, Dom wakes up everyday to Thursday and he has to try to save Mia's life, but the authors did an excellent job of changing up Dom's interactions with the other characters.
With that being said, this is only a three star read for me. I didn't really buy into Dom and Mia's relationship. It's been ten years since they stopped being a couple. People change. I felt that Dom wanted Mia to be the same and Mia wanted Dom to be different than she remembered. News flash: He really wasn't. I did think he grew as a person and became a little more sensitive to other people and their situations, though.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an electronic advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 stars. I liked this book but didn't love it. I thought it was interesting but got pretty bored before the end. I didn't "like" the ending, but I think it ended the only logical way it could. I'm undecided if I will be reading more by these authors.
This was a quick, light read for me. Groundhog Day meets the Butterfly Effect.
Love, loss, changing small things to affect the larger picture. It's fun, it's romantic, it's suspenseful.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would, given it is out of my usual style. The repetition of the days and the improvement of the behaviour of the narrator are similar to the Bill Murray film but that's where similarities end. Recommended.
Let me start by saying that I don't tend to cry in books, there are very few that cause that feeling, this is one of those few books.
On How to Save a Life we meet Dominic who finds his ex-fiancée Mia after ten years of being separated. Dom believes he can regain that lost flame they previously had and invites Mia on a date. The tragedy of this story is that on the date, Mia dies and Dom continues to relive that horrible day over and over again like the movie Groundhoug Day. Day after day he tries to save the love of his life but he never finds a way to do it. I won't say much but the story of this book fascinated me from the first page. I love the way both authors conveys a message of appreciating life and the little things that we sometimes take for granted.
4.5 stars
thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for this amazing arc
Do you truly get over your first love? What if you were given a chance to win them back?
Dom lost the light of his life, Mia, ten years ago after calling off their engagement. And he’s been unable to move on since. Regret has flooded his heart. Destiny intervenes, and a chance encounter at a coffee shop brings Mia back into his life. But can he re-capture and hold on to the love of his life this time? Or is he doomed to lose her forever?
Sometimes you have to face your fears head on!
The less you know going into this read the better. Blind is best!
It’s fun! It’s quirky! It will give you hope to believe in the power of love!
Though I didn’t care much for Mia, I did want Dom to finally find joy and happiness!
You might find yourself rooting for him too!
A buddy read with Susanne
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for granting my wish.
This was my first book by these authors, and I loved it. It is a love story, but a twisted one. Don finally reconnects with his ex-fiancée, Mia, whose heart he broke 10 years ago. She agrees to a date with him. On that date she does in a freak accident. He wishes for a chance to save her and sets himself in a time loop where he repeats that day over and over trying to save her.
I wish a bit more time had been spent on their past love story. I struggled to feel the love between Dom and Mia, no matter how many times he told the reader that she was the love of his life. I loved the side stories with Amanda, a girl Dom was able to save that day, and Chuck, the homeless man Dom ignored everything day but that day. Overall, I loved the story and was entertained and engrossed throughout. I will definitely be looking at this writing duo’s prior works!
I am usually not a fan of the groundhog day type of story because I find that they seem to drag on more than other stories, but this one was done really well. I think the layer of mystery helped to keep the story going and intriguing. I definitely didn't see the end coming, but I loved how it was tied together. I liked the story more than the characters in it, but I still recommend this one!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this one!
Dom is reunited with his ex-fiance Mia 10 years after their breakup, but she dies tragically on their date. Now Dom relives the same day over and over trying to figure out how he can save her life.
I was intrigued by the concept of reliving the same day and seeing if changing your actions can have an effect on the outcome. I had a hard time getting into this one because its repetition felt dragged out, but once I was about halfway through I just wanted to see where it would go. I think they could have cut back on a couple of the reoccurring days and still maintained the story as each new day made me less invested in the characters. I had a hard time overall with the main characters—I felt like they only covered the surface level of Dom and Mia's relationship so I didn't buy into the romance and understand why he was so hooked on her for all these years. I did appreciate the secondary characters Amanda and Chuck, and enjoyed the overall message of the story, so it's not a complete wash for me. Be prepared for The Fray to be on loop in your head as you read this one!
If you're a fan of Oona Out of Order or the movie Groundhog Day, pick this up when it publishes July 14!
Will post review to Amazon and Barnes & Noble on pub day.
I have read all of Liz and Lisa’s books and I can honestly say that this is their best yet. It is an emotional roller coaster with every day that Dom relives trying to save Mia. Each day he tries and each time he fails. He learns from each replay and you have to wonder if that’s not the life lesson in all of this.
I loved Dom. He was a terrific character and while I liked Mia I felt that she was more of just a catalyst for him to learn to live.
Dom and Mia had a terrible breakup 10 years ago, but when they run into each other at a coffee shop, their feelings resurface. Dom and Mia agree to go out on a date, Thursday, the following day. All seems well until Mia tragically dies in an accident on their date. Dom wakes up the next morning devastated...but it's Thursday morning again and Mia is still alive. Now Dom will do anything to save her from it happening again.
As much as I loved the concept of this novel, I had a hard time connecting with Dom. I found it interesting that we were given the point of view of Dom. It is rare to have only a male's pov. I would have loved to see Mia's side of things. I kept wondering how these two characters got to where they were. I kept yelling at Dom, not to do what he was doing. I felt like he kept making crazy decisions.
I do really enjoy the writing of Fenton and Steinke. This is the second book of theirs I have read and both were completely different from each other. I can definitely say they are not predictable.
It's a rom-com homage to Groundhog Day! They even tell you that in the text! And like in Groundhog Day, our version of Bill Murray, Dom, learns something new with each revisit to June 11th, his Groundhog Day, but has a different goal in mind. For Dom, each June 11th is the chance to save his first love from her death. I was amused by the other little parts of his day that he repeated in various fashions over and over again and was surprised, at times, by how he didn't consider them in his scheming to save Mia's life. In many ways the ending was predictable. But, with a book like this, that is just fine. It is the journey that makes the story enjoyable and a good distraction from our own day to day lives.
How to Save a Life is a modern take on the movie Groundhog Day. We follow Dom who bumps into his ex-fiance Mia who he hasn't seen in 10 years. Dom decides this is a sign to reconnect with Mia, but when they go on their first date back she faces a tragic death. The next thing you know he is stuck replaying this same catastrophic Thursday over and over again. Each repeat brings him new perspective and challenges on his relationships and life in general.
I thought I was going to get bored with this book since it keeps repeating the same Thursday; however, each new day brought up different information and perspective. This was an interesting and enjoyable read especially if you love the move Groundhog Day.
Groundhog Day Meets Final Destination. This was an interesting take on the time loop/ premonition concept of those two franchises in that as more of a women's fiction take (and book form to boot), we get a more drama-based view of the idea rather than comedic or thriller based. The first time Mia dies is gut-wrenching, and the final pages of the book get back to that in their own way, but in between we get a view of her dying so many times it has an effect akin to the multiple-death montage of Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow/ Live Die Repeat. So obviously with so many pop culture references here (maybe I could even throw in another one in that I kept thinking early on that this would be a Family Man-esque "glimpse" scenario), I thoroughly enjoy this particular trope, and Fenton and Steinkle did it true justice in this book. One of the better executed takes on it I've ever seen, perhaps because of the nature of the medium we're able to get inside the main character's head a bit more explicitly, Very much recommended.
This book started a little slow and I almost didn’t continue. Has a very interesting Groundhog Day concept and I am sure glad I hung in there. Very very well written and has such a beautiful message and story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
OᐯᗴᖇᐯIᗴᗯ: Dom runs into his ex-fiancé almost ten years after their broken engagement and he asks her on a date. When Mia tragically dies on that date, Dom wishes for a chance to save her life. Dom finds his wish granted when like Groundhog Day, the movie, Dom continues to relive that day over and over while he desperately tries to find a way to save Mia!
ᗰY TᕼOᑌᘜᕼTᔕ: This book is Groundhog Day come to life. Every time Dom relives the day to try to save Mia, he learns more about her and about himself. You could feel his desperation to save her and the lengths he would go to in order to get the outcome he wanted. It was hard not to root for him as he himself became more self-aware and a better person overall. I will definitely be reading more from this writing duo!

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Imagine a very bad day that is on repeat. Dom and Mia broke up 10 years ago and now have a second chance to make it work. Yet it keeps going wrong over and over again. While frustrating, Dom ends up learning some important things about himself, and learns what is really important. A lovely book!
