I really enjoyed this book.
Dom sees Mia after letting her go 10 years ago, just to have her die on his first date again with her.. Dom’s desperate fight to save Mia the woman he loves. Great story of how far you will go to try to change the out come of a day that keeps repeating itself. The journey to save mia really opens doms eyes to other things he never seemed to notice all those years agao. Great modern day version of groundhog day.
“It is easy to get swept away in her. She’s my sea.”
Thursday, June 11. Almost 10 years after their engagement ended, Dom runs into Mia at a coffeeshop in Oceanside, California. What are the odds!? Dom sees this as a second chance and asks Mia out, but she ends up tragically dying on the date. In the hospital, he wishes he had been given the chance to save her. Then, he wakes up the next morning, and it’s Thursday, June 11 all over again. Dom’s wish has come true, but on his date with Mia again that night, she still ends up meeting her death.
Now Dom seems to be stuck living in his own Groundhog Day version of hell, only to lose the love of his life just as they find their way back to each other. But as he keeps repeating the same day over and over, he begins to notice and learn things he didn’t the first time around.
I found myself reading this so fast to figure out what happened! While it could have easily felt repetitive (I mean how can it not when Dom is reliving the same day over and over?) the authors kept things interesting with twists, a little suspense, and of course some romance. No spoilers but I didn’t see the ending coming, and I loved it!!

This book will have your thinking Groundhog Day, a much better version of Groundhog Day! Dom and Mia have broken up over ten years ago but Dom strongly believes in the power of second chances. Afterall ten years ago he was immature, afraid of commitment, and despite his love for Mia he just wasn't ready. Flash forward ten years and Dom runs into Mia in a coffee shop. He asks her out and she agrees. His second chance is here. Tragedy strikes on the date and Dom wakes up the next morning realizing he's reliving the previous day, again and again, and again.
These two women have clearly written numerous books together and their style is flawless.
Fantastic, totally original story. This book broke me in the best possible way. It’s heartbreaking but full of hope and ultimately up lifting. When Dom randomly runs into the love of his life in a coffee shop 10years after he broke off their engagement, he realizes what a huge mistake he made. An emotional take on the old “Groundhog Day” movie means Dom keeps repeating the same day over and over and it keeps coming to a tragic end. Beautifully written story that examines love and life and what a difference it makes when you treat people well. Would definitely give 10 stars if possible. Highly recommend.
Thank you to #netgalley and #howtosavealife for the eARC of this book in exchange for a review.
The story of Dom and Mia is one that will stay with me for a while. It makes me think about how I would react if I was given the chance over and over to save someone's life, how far would I go. I loved the main characters and even some of the supporting characters. I do wish that the MCs were more developed and there was more background on their relationship that preceded their breakup. I did feel like that was missing and kept me from really feeling the emotional pull that this book could have had.
Also, I think it could have been just a little shorter, it got a bit repetitive toward the end.
I think my favorite part of this book was the ending, but I won't say more so I don't spoil it!
How to Save a Life breathes new life into the Groundhog Day phenomenon, using love and regret as a catalyst. It somehow managed to be both enjoyable and heart-wrenching at the same time. As the story unfolded, I was increasingly curious as to how things would end up.
A quick synopsis: when Dom bumps into Mia, his ex-fiancee that he never got over, he sees it as a sign. He’s thrilled to have a second chance with the one that got away. But things don’t go according to plan. In fact, they cause Dom to question everything he thinks he knows about his life.
On their first date together after they’re reunited, a tragic accident occurs and Mia is killed. Dom is heartbroken. But then, he wakes up the next morning, and realizes he’s re-living the same day again.
But day after day, no matter what he does to try to change what happens, it seems Mia’s fate is sealed. Can he figure out a way to save her?
I don’t think I’ve really read a romantic suspense before, and I’m so glad I gave this one a chance! I’m a big fan of genre-mashups, and this one worked really well. I can totally see this being made into a movie.
I think the only thing I didn’t love as much was a slight repetitive feeling. But you can’t really do a Groundhog Day-type book without that, can you?
Overall, How to Save a Life was an entertaining and thought-provoking read! Great for fans of thrillers and romance alike.

Lisa and Liz always know how to write books that are entertaining but also leave you thinking. Would you relive the same day over and over again if you kept seeing the love of your life die each time, but wanted to find a way to save them? Dominic and Mia broke off their engagement 10 years ago but run into each other randomly at a coffee shop. After they meet up again, Mia dies tragically and Dominic finds himself reliving the day over and over. He tries to change the outcome each time, but each time Mia is gone by the end of the night.
This book is full of heart, makes you think about the many different ways that its possible to save someone’s life, and left me in tears. I loved the characters and the story was so engrossing that I read it in one day. I’m a big Lisa and Liz fan and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
There isn't a doubt in my mind that How to Save a Life is going to be an incredibly well-loved novel in 2020.
It has all the necessary elements...lovable characters, an engaging plot, and a beautifully done love story. Unfortunately, for me, it also felt repetitive and slightly cheesy. And readers won't need to be stuck in a time loop (haha...see what I did there?), to intuit the conclusion.
This is my third Liz Fenton/Lisa Steinke novel, and though none have particularly wowed me, Girls' Night Out was my favorite...not necessarily because it was so much better this one, I just tend to prefer suspense novels to romance.
I will say this about these two talented writers...they definitely don't get stuck in a writing rut. Each of their novels is very different from the one before. For that, I give major kudos.
Bottom line: If you like romance novels and Groundhog's Day with Bill Muray...you'll likely love this story.
Pick up your copy July 14th.

Lisa and Liz books are one of the highlights of summer book releases, and I could not put this down. Think Groundhog day meets romance, meets growth, meets humanity, meets all the feels, and I'd recommend going in blind for the fullest effect. The story makes you question how you think about time and also how you think about other people and yourself. It inspires you to live life to the fullest (safely) and also be there for other people--a lot of good out of a quick and unputdownable read.
The characters are real, the story is engaging (even if it is repetitive by nature it's not repetitive enough to be boring by any extent of the word). I'm always impressed by how well thought out their novels are, yet how they feel like they were written by one brain. Highly recommend!
Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "How to Save a Life" by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, Amazon Publishing, July 14, 2020
Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, authors of "How to Save A Life" have written a suspenseful, emotional, entertaining, and thought-provoking novel. The genres for this novel are fiction, women's fiction, suspense, romance, and a dash of fantasy. The timeline for this story spans over a decade and goes to the past and future when it pertains to the characters or events. The authors describe the colorful and dramatic characters as complex and complicated. This is sort of a 2020 version of the movie "Groundhog Day", when the character wakes up repeatedly to the same song every day, with certain details being the same as the day before.
I love the way both Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke vividly describe the characters and events. Dom is surprised to see his ex-fiance, Mia, after 10 years, and feels that perhaps this is a sign that they can get back together. Dom had given Mia a ring, then changed his mind about getting married. Mia was heart-broken, and Dom has felt that Mia was the only special love that he let getaway. He asks her out on a date.
That day certain things happen that Dom will remember. Dom and Mia's date seems to be going well when something tragic happens and Mia dies. Dom is distraught and finds himself being woken up by a certain musical tune. He finds out that Mia didn't die, and they can go out again. Mia is a risk-taker and Dom likes things to be the same. This happens again and again and Dom is aware that he can make certain things better for some people. Can Dom figure out a way to keep Mia safe and alive? Can love be strong enough to save someone?
I highly recommend this memorable and wonderful novel for readers.
I loved this - Groundhog Day style loops are one of my favorite tropes, and this one was an excellent take on it. I love seeing characters use their extra days to learn and grow, and use their insider knowledge sometimes successfully and sometimes not so successfully.
Many years ago Dom let the love of his life, Mia, walk away when he backed out of their wedding. Fast forward to the present and they meet by chance in a cafe. They talk and, desperate for a second chance, Dom asks her out on a date. Tragedy strikes on the date and she dies. Waking up the next morning and Dom is confused to find himself living the start of the previous day again, only the memory of what happened "the night before" lingering. He has a second chance to prevent Mia's death. He fails. Waking up a second time at the reset point. "the morning of". Long story short, this happens over and over, Dom is in his own groundhog day of repetition. But what does he need to do, is there something he is doing wrong? What can he do to stop this happening? How to save a life?
This started off very well but, for me anyway, it got a bit repetitive and about 2/3 of the way through I kinda thought I knew where we were all going. It became a bit predictable. I was mostly right but there were still a few surprises to be found along the way.
The characters were well drawn and, apart from getting a bit bogged down in all the repetition, I did care about them which I think is important with this genre of book. I was, in a car crash sort of way, intrigued to see how Mia would "die" next but I think that says more about me and my usual crime fiction reading genre than anything about the book!
As already mentioned, the end was a wee bit obvious so there wasn't quite the satisfaction I craved when I got to the end and I did feel a little flat. But the journey getting there was fun and easy - a good book for an afternoon's sun in my hammock, nothing too heavy - so overall it was a good read.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Wow, Liz and Lisa have done it again! This book is so different from anything else I've ever read. Dom keeps waking up and repeating the same day every day, trying to figure out how to get it right. After the initial confusion that this is happening over and over again, he comes up with a plan to try to figure things out and he makes the most of each repeat day. A really different idea, as these two authors seem keep being able to come up with for each new book they put out!!
This is the perfect book for when you have all the feelings inside you and you just can't let them out. Cathartic is the word I would use to describe this book because while it's sad and it allows you to feel sad and to see yourself in Dom it also has tender and funny and heartwarming moments to remind you that life is mostly good after all.
"How to Save a Life" was a roller-coaster that kept me up late into the night wanting to see how it would end.
Dom and Mia have a complicated past that has never really released either of them from its grip. By chance, they run into each other at a coffee shop ten years later and attempt to reconnect. I personally had not read the summary of the book so when Mia died abruptly at the end of their first date, I was shocked and had to go read what the book was about. Turns out, Mia dies at the end of EVERY date. Dom is doomed to repeat the same day over and over again, watching Mia die in countless, unpredictable ways. It poses the question, is Mia destined to die? Or by the actions earlier in the day, does Dom throw off the balance of the universe and thus cause her to die? There were a lot of these questions rolling around in my head as I read, which were all resolved, and a lot of the revelations I actually had guessed early on, but it didn't take away from the novel. This is the second novel I have read by these two and it won't be the last!
Special thanks to @netgalley for the Advanced Reader Copy!
Can you really change a fated path? Dominic Suarez certainly tries. Over and over again, with netting essentially the same result. But each time through the cycle, he dives a little deeper, casts a wider net, and takes in other facets of life that would have passed by unnoticed. I’ve seen other reviewers say they were rooting for all of the characters, and found that quite true! The story wrapped up with poignancy and a definite sense of growth and self revelation for Dominic. Great book for fans of the duo of Lisa & Liz!

Synopsis:
Dom is having a very bad day—one he literally can’t escape.
When Dom bumps into Mia, his ex-fiancée whom he hasn’t seen in almost a decade, he believes they’ve been given a second chance and asks her out. When Mia dies tragically on their date, Dom makes a desperate wish: to be given the chance to save her life. And when he wakes the next morning to the shock that she’s alive, he thinks his wish may have been granted. But day after day, no matter what he changes about their time together, she still meets a terrible fate.
Dom frantically searches for answers to save his beloved Mia and rekindle their former love. But the further he digs, the more obsessed he becomes, making him realize that slowing down time may be the only way to see things clearly. As he’s forced to confront the truth about himself and those he’s closest to, Dom vows that he’ll watch Mia die a thousand times if it means he can save her once.
We all make mistakes when we're younger and some of us are ready to settle down sooner than others. But what if immaturity forced you to give up the only person you would ever love? Then, thankfully (by fate) that person comes back into your life, but you're forced to watch them die 9 times and are physically unable to save them? This book really made me question loyality, love and the crippling sadness that comes along with losing your soulmate.
Wow. This book. A heavy, emotionally packed rollercoaster that makes you want to tell the ones you love the most just how much they mean to you every second you get. You will definitely cry, so make sure you have a box of tissues. You'll feel confused, angry, melancholy and ironically enough, emotionally satisfied with how the story ends. The last few pages of this book were probably my favorite because it's exactly how I was hoping it would end. No spoiler's here. This is a fantastic read. And definitely a unique and fresh twist on Groundhog's day.
Imagine living the same day over and over again.
Little details change but the outcome remains the same. The love of your life dies at the end of it. Every night Dom tries to save Mia and every night, he fails no matter what he does. Dom of course is devastated and each day he tries again. No one in his life comprehends what he is going through because he is the only one going through it.
”How to Save a Life” is a novel with a fairly original premise. I really wanted to love this novel - unfortunately, something was missing for me here. If I had to put my finger on it, I would say that I didn’t buy into the romance between Dom and Mia. As each day repeated itself, I felt less and less for the characters as the time loop made it impossible for me to feel invested. In my opinion, neither Dom or Mia appeared to be well suited for the other as each wished the other would change in some way and that left me wanting. That aside, the writing here is well done. The suspense, Dom’s distress over reliving each day, the tension which kept me engaged even though I didn’t quite buy into the romance. I loved the storyline between Dom and Chuck and Dom and Amanda, the woman whose life Dom saved every morning. The book’s message is also one that I truly appreciate.
This was a buddy read with Kaceey.
Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke for the arc.
Published on Goodreads on 6.28.20.
Loved this books look at grief. Don’s obsession with protecting Mia, his ex fiancé is sweet- but also desperate. I loved the ending.
This book has. all the ups, downs, and suspense as a trip to the theme park. It had me wanting to answer the question, "How far will I go to save someone I love?" I loved this book and felt emotional throughout it. This story was entertaining and captivating. I loved the reimagining of Groundhogs Day. Can't wait to read more by Liz and Lisa!
