I'm giving an honest review of this book; thank you to the publisher and the authors, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke.
AMAZING read, and truly not like the authors' other books. This is truly an emotional, heart breaking book, based on basically Groundhog day. The same heart break happens over and over again, and this poor man relives this pain each and every day, however the day always teaches him a new lesson each day.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and as always, can't wait for another release from this dynamic duo!!
Thank you for writing this book and for allowing me an early release for an honest review.
Dom keeps beating himself over letting Mia get away 10 years ago hen he was young and frankly, dumb. Against all odds, he runs into her out of the blue -only this time he knows better than to let fear stop him from getting what he wants. Dom and Mia agree to go on a date but Mia dies in a freak accident the night before. Devastated, Dom can't handle the feelings of sorrow. When he wakes up the next day, still paralised with regret of a wasted life, he realises that he is reliving the same day. Will he manage to save Mia this time?
Wow!
How to Save a Life is a captivating love story that hits all of the feels! What a nice read and how refreshing to read a male voice caught in such predicament. A beautiful novel about taking risks and the importance of second chances regardless of what may have happened, remember there's still tomorrow!
Disclosure: I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced reader copy of the book. This is my honest review.
Fenton and Steinke have written some great thrillers together, but this is a foray outside the thriller genre. Dom sees Mia, his ex, for the first time after 10 years; and he decides to give their relationship another chance. They go on a date to the fair, and Mia ends up dying. When Dom wakes up the next morning, it's the same day all over again; and he decides to try to save her life. This happens repeatedly, and Mia ends up dying from different and overly horrific deaths each time. I did not enjoy this book, but I found the ending to be somewhat heartwarming. Also, there was no explanation for why Dom kept reliving the same day. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
4.5 stars
Wow! I am literally never disappointed by these authors, every single book I read is unique and the writing is fabulous. I was in a bit of a reading slump before picking up How to Save a life, but after the first couple chapters I was hooked I didn’t want to put it down. Crisis averted!
I’m sure the “groundhog day” theme has been done before, but this story was intriguing. The characters, for the most part, were likable. At times Mia annoyed me, but in the end I understood why she acted the way she did and ultimately ended up liking her too. And Dominic , ugh, I just wanted to hug poor Dominic. Reliving the same day over and over with the same miserable outcome. But in the end, I was happy with the wya the story ended.
Overall I would highly recommend How to Save a Life. And I can’t wait for the next Liz & Lisa book!!
This is quite similar to the final destination film series and a bit like Groundhog Day, so it isn’t original but it’s still a really good read. Felt like a YA book.
Quite emotive, very well written, I think it’s worthy of 3.5 stars.
GIven the recent events unfolding in the world, I almost put this book down - it was tough the first few chapter realizing the death of the girlfriend would be unfolding every day, in gruesome detail. I am so glad I powered through, though, because the result is a thought provoking, beautiful novel exploring the details of predestination, life and love. I think this is Liz and Lisa's best work to date, and I love how they push the limit with each novel, exploring different ways to tell a story.
I couldn't put this down! Dom is re-living Thursday June 11th over and over trying to figure out how to save the life of Mia, the love of his life. Great writing to keep me vested even though you sort of know whats going to happen with each new Thursday, although there is positive character development along the way. I certainly recommend this very interesting love story/time loop adventure. Also, I can't get the song out of my head now. :)
Thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
Oh how I loved this story! A bittersweet love story with a Grounds Hogs Day twist. Absolutely page turning because you just didn't know what was going to happen next, even though the day repeated itself over and over.. Lots of thought provoking lessons in this story, making you think about how many things you might do differently in a day, given the chance. Love these authors! Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the chance to read an advance copy.
I heard so many good reviews about "How to Save a Life", that I was eager to jump right in! The book begins with the relationship between Mia and Dom on the day they get engaged. Then, we're told that they broke off the engagement and broke up (for vague, "he wasn't ready" reasons). Ten years later, they happen to bump into each other in a coffee shop, and Dom apologizes, Taking his shot, he asks her out on a date and hopes to start their relationship back up again. In "Groundhog Day" style, he relives this day over and over. Each time, she tragically dies at the end of their date, through a variety of methods. He's desperate to save her, but is never able to.
I had a hard time understanding what was so great about their relationship that he would be willing to go through this mental trauma over and over again. Also, it was hard to continually read about different tragic ways to die. This book wasn't very enjoyable for me to read. I wasn't really rooting for them, and it was so sad that I just didn't like it.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
This is now my favorite book by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke! I couldn't put it down! This was an emotional roller coaster of a book. It was fun and sad all at the same time. This fast-paced, quick read is another great book by these two authors. Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for a digital arc of this title.
This book was absolutely fantastic! It was so different from anything else I've read before. The concept was so interesting and the plot really kept me hooked from page one.
This book also kind of ripped my heart out, but it was worth it.
Overall a brilliantly written, emotional and beautiful book.
Thankyou to netgalley for allowing me to read it early.
I knew I wanted to read How To Save A Life as soon as I read the blurb and saw the mention of the Groundhog Day element. It reminded me of one of my all time favorite books The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle and I was immediately curious how this element would be developed into the plot. It's without doubt also the reason this story will stay with me for quite some time! The Groundhog Day element gives the story a surreal touch as well as raising an interesting question as mentioned in the blurb: how far would you go to save the life of someone you love?
The main reason this story worked for me is that same Groundhog Day element. How To Save A Life starts out as an ordinary romantic contemporary when Dom meets his ex-fiancé Mia again after ten years... While this does sounds like a bit of a cliche, it's a tolerable cliche and it was interesting to see the two react to their sudden meeting and what some might call fate. The plot thickens after the introduction of the Groundhog Day element, and it gave the story that magical realism vibe as you wonder if the things that are happening are real or if it is all in Dom's head.
The story is told in a series of repeat Thursdays as Dom wakes up and experiences the same day all over again. This might sound repetitive, but there are enough changes in the events as well as enough growth in Dom's character to keep you interested. By doing things different each Thursday, we slowly learn more about Dom, Mia and their past as well as the other characters in play. I didn't particularly like the hint at the love triangle nor the stack of cliches used throughout the story, but overall I was intrigued enough by how it would all end to keep reading.
As for the characters... I'm still not sure if I actually like them, but they were all well developed and felt mostly realistic. I had a great time getting to know Dom and Mia better over time... It was also interesting to see the dynamics between the different characters, and I actually quite liked the ending too. How To Save A Life proved to be a very interesting read; a mostly character driven story about Dom trying to save the love of his life while also learning more about himself. It's definitely not your ordinary lost love story!
HOW TO SAVE A LIFE follows Dom, a man who once proposed to the love of his life Mia, but broke off the engagement when it all began to be a bit much for him. Now, twelve years later, he has a chance run in with Mia and all of the old feelings come rushing back. Hoping to give their relationship another shot, Dom invites Mia out. Things on their date take a tragic turn and the night ends with Dom losing the woman he was just starting to think he might get back.
Dom is understandably confused when he wakes back up the next morning in his bed the morning before his disasterous date. Thinking it was all a bizarre dream he goes about his day but things keep happening the same way they did in his “dream”. He is determined to save Mia this time around, but he fails yet again. Good thing the next day is Thursday… again and he has yet another opportunity to set things right.
I really enjoyed this book! It took me a bit to get into the flow of it, I think because I was living in anticipation to see what would go so wrong on their date, but once Dom starts figuring out the situation he’s in, I was hooked to see how this one would wind up. I was right there with Dom, feeling the frustration of the limitations put on by the reality he was living!
This is one of those books where I was wanting to yell at Dom with alternate theories and ideas to try, but he did actually eventually get to the ideas I had in mind. The authors also struck a good balance of just enough repetition in his days to make sense, but also enough changes so you don’t feel like you’re reading the same story over and over!
Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke were new to me authors last year when I read and really enjoyed THE TWO LILA BENNETTS and since then I have picked up at least one ore of their books for my shelves with an intention to add more! HOW TO SAVE A LIFE will be out on 7/14/2020 and I’d recommend it for a fun read!
A massive thank you to Netgalley for allowing me early access to this book. This book is like the modern day version of Groundhog Day. Dom keeps reliving the same Thursday over and over again in which the love of his life dies each time. He had to try and figure out what is happening, why it’s happening and how to stop it happening! I really enjoyed this book I spent ages trying to figure out how Dom would stop the cycle. Every day had some constants which I just knew would have something to do with it but I just couldn’t figure out what... The ending was so touching and lovely. I’d love to know what happened to Dom after the ending!

"It's forced me to realize that you have to live, regardless of fear."
Wow, again Liz & Lisa have blown me away! This is the second book I've read by them (The Two Lila Bennetts) and they did NOT disappoint.
How to Save a Life is Groundhog day meets Final Destination with Dom reliving Thursday June 11th (today as I write this) over and over in an effort to save the life of the love of his life, Mia, who returned back into his life 10 years after he ended their engagement. Each day he scrambles to save her, to change the decision of his location in an effort to change the future. But each time, fate continues to step in and he fails. Each day he learns more and more about himself, Mia, and the people they've become in the decade they were apart. And in the process he realizes that life is worth living, that you're not living it to its fullest if you're cautious.
This is book pulls at all the heartstrings & makes you want to hug your loved ones and tell them you love them!
In How to Save a Life, Fenton and Steinke take Groundhog Day and apply it to 2020 (no, not the 2020 with the pandemic, but just a general current time frame). The book follows Dom, the main character, who is still pining over his ex-fiancee, Mia. Dom ended the relationship with Mia 10 years ago and the pair have not reconnected... until June 9, 2020, when they both happen to be in the same coffee shop in San Diego. There is clearly still a spark, and the pair agree to go out two days later.
June 11, 2020: the day that never ends for Dom. The first time living through the day, he does what he normally does, goes out with Mia and they end up in an accident on a carnival ride that kills Mia. Devasted, he ends the day in a hospital bed himself... only to wake up in his own bed, fine, with Mia still alive the next day. Except it's not the next day; it's still June 11, 2020. He relives the day again and again and learns about himself, others, life and love on the way through.
I enjoyed this book - I wanted to keep reading to find out how it ended and I think the end is done well. Overall, would recommend.
Beware: How to Save a Life by the Fray (the song) will likely be stuck in your head at some point when reading this book!
Other than that, I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick read, and what was really ironic for me (unintentionally) is that I started the book on June 9, which is the day that the book started, when Dom and Mia met in a coffee shop (clearly there was no pandemic going on) after not seeing each other for 10 years. They were engaged, Dom broke it off and then the pair did not stay in contact until June 9. They made plans to go on a date two days later, June 11 (the day I finished the book).
Only June 11 is on repeat for Dom. He lives the day... and Mia dies tragically. He's devasted, but then wakes up on June 11 again and Mia is alive! He gets to keep living the day until he gets it right, very similar to Groundhog Day. The book makes shout-outs to Groundhog Day and other time-loop TV shows, which I appreciate. I really liked the character of Dom and how he grew and developed over the course of living the day over and over again. I think the ending was perfect.
How To Save A Life is a heart-wrenching, spellbinding story of life, love, and death. Over and over. After 10 years, Dom has a chance encounter with his ex-fiancée Mia, and that sets off a story that will not only make you examine your own life, but totally immerse yourself in Dom’s gut-wrenching attempts to save the girl he still loves, as he literally relives one fateful day again and again. If you’re thinking “Groundhog Day”, think again - this is NOT that story, but rather a soul-searching tale of a lost love. A heartfelt 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through @NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m giving you a really good piece of advice here (please take it)! Do NOT read the synopsis on the back of this book! I’m telling you, it will ruin the best surprise waiting for you inside these pages! I did not know what this book was about and just started reading it. Let me tell you, it was SHOCKING, HEARTBREAKING, and so UNPREDICTABLE - I mean, I think my heart may have actually fallen out at one point. But you won’t have that feeling if you read that back cover, which I did after the book, and I was upset that they’d ruin that feeling for you.
When I started, I thought this was just going to be a cheesy romantic comedy... and I could already tell where it was going to go, but oh my goodness! It is soooo much more than that!
Some books are able to break your heart - usually one time, and near the end. This book broke my heart something like 10 times... and every time it hurt just as much as the last!! This is definitely my favorite book by Fenton and Steinke.
It was strange to read a novel set in 2020 with no mention of social distancing, masks, quarantine, or COVID-19. Especially since Chuck (a character) ABSOLUTELY had the Coronavirus! Luckily, COVID-19 will keep us away from the fairs, since they’ve all been canceled.
Tomorrow is Thursday, June 11, and I’m more than a little freaked out! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Thank you NetGalley and Liz and Lisa for the opportunity to eARC this story. Gosh, from the beginning there were so many emotions.
Dom is having a very bad day—one he literally can’t escape.
When Dom bumps into Mia, his ex-fiancée whom he hasn’t seen in almost a decade, he believes they’ve been given a second chance and asks her out. When Mia dies tragically on their date, Dom makes a desperate wish: to be given the chance to save her life. And when he wakes the next morning to the shock that she’s alive, he thinks his wish may have been granted. But day after day, no matter what he changes about their time together, she still meets a terrible fate.
Dom frantically searches for answers to save his beloved Mia and rekindle their former love. But the further he digs, the more obsessed he becomes, making him realize that slowing down time may be the only way to see things clearly. As he’s forced to confront the truth about himself and those he’s closest to, Dom vows that he’ll watch Mia die a thousand times if it means he can save her once.
How to Save a Life was a rollercoaster of emotions and even though similar things happen daily the authors kept my full attention with the evolution of the story. A twist on Groundhog Day with a little more love story. Will make a marvelous vacation escape when it releases.
