Liz and Lisa have done it again!!! 5 stars for how to save a life! I loved this read.
Many thanks to the publisher and net galley, who provided this free e-copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was an amazing love story done Groundhog day style!!! 10 years ago, Dom got cold feet and called off his engagement to Mia. For 10 years, Dom misses Mia and believes he made a mistake. While he is sitting in a coffee shop, Mia walks in! They reconnect and even decide to go on a date. While on the date, Mia dies. Dom wishes he could have saved her and would do anything to be able to do so. For 9 days Dom wakes up to June 11th and the morning of his and Mia's date. Can this day be the day he saves Mia? Dom learns so much about himself, life, and love reliving each of his June 11th's. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its characters. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Dom is having a really bad day. When he bumps into Mia, he’s ex-fiance, he believes they’ve been given a second chance at love with Mia. When she dies while on a date, he makes a wish, wishing for a chance to save Mia's life. He wakes up the next day to find that she’s alive yet can't find a way to escape her fate of dying.
This story was a quiet an emotional roller coaster. From start to finish, it was an original story that surprised you often but left you feeling a bit broken hearted as well. These are my favorite kind of stories. The store flows so well that I read this book in less than 24 hours. It was written so well, captivating me from the very start.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Well-written, thought-provoking, and some smiles and fun along the way. I love these authors, and am glad to see another novel from them. “How to Save a Life does not disappoint!
This duo surprised me with their writing and tribute to Groundhog Day. This was really poignant and romantic. It was also beautiful.
Loved How to Save a Life - definitely my favorite book so far of this writing duo, Lisa and Liz. This story tells the story of Dom, who is living his life groundhog-day style after his "the one that got away" dies on their first date after 10 years apart.
The book covered so much about life lessons learned, and has you thinking about what you would do if you lived the same day over and over. And also how you would change it! Dom learns a lot about himself as a person, what he wants, his family, and how he can better his community. Dom is a very likeable character, and it's easy to empathize with his faults.
Add this to your summer reading list!
A perfect summer read to get lost in. Fate, perspective, serendipity...all of the above? Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC copy of this book.
I was intrigued by the synopsis of this story and was looking forward to starting it. I have to say that I did find it really hard to get into, the story is such a play on Groundhog Days and Russian dolls, both mentioned in the text, that I struggled to get interested. It just didn't draw me in the way I had hoped it would. The story didn't really develop, for me, until the last few chapters and those I thoroughly enjoyed. The ending is clever and well thought out.
The story is written around two main characters, Dom and Mia, who meet up ten years after breaking off their wedding. I enjoyed seeing Dom's character develop, especially at the end.
I did work out the plot of this story fairly early on; so between a very slow start and a storyline which has definitely been done before, I did struggle with it. I also felt the dialogue wasn't brilliantly crafted. However, the end made up for it and I am sure it will be very popular with a lot of readers.
If you’ve been a fan of Liz & Lisa’s for quite some time (as I have), you probably know they used to write more women’s fiction/magical realism and then took a shift into the psychological/domestic thriller world. In their newest book, How to Save a Life, the dynamic duo combine these two elements to bring you Dominic - a man who is reliving the same day over and over (a la Groundhog’s Day) and each day fails to save Mia, the woman he loves, from an untimely death.
Liz & Lisa brought their unique style to How to Save a Life and this book truly stands out. It can’t be an easy feat to write about the same day over and over and have each day feel different and that’s where the magic of this writing duo comes in, they pulled it off. HTSAL will appeal to fans of many genres and by the end, you might just want one more day with Dominic.
HOW TO SAVE A LIFE is a suspenseful and emotionally-charged re-imagining of Groundhog Day by the writing duo of Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke. It is told from the point of view of Dom, who has just unexpectedly run into his ex-fiancée, Mia at a coffee shop after not seeing her for nearly ten years. He has always deeply regretted breaking up with Mia and wonders if this chance meeting will allow them a second chance. On the night of their date, Mia dies tragically and Dom wishes for only one thing: to be able to save Mia’s life. He awakes to find out she is still alive and thus begins a time loop that has Dom reliving the same day over and over, each time trying desperately to save Mia. Each attempt has him revisiting mistakes from his past and learning how he might live and love more fully in the present. Full of unexpected twists and heartfelt moments, I couldn’t put this book down. I found myself engaged with all the characters and rooting for them the whole way. I truly enjoyed this compelling and thought-provoking story of love and hope and I highly recommend it. Thank you to the authors, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy.
I've been a fan of the writing duo Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke since their very first titles, and while I enjoyed their thrillers I was excited that they were returning to the women's fiction genre with this title.
Dom has never quite forgiven himself for dumping the love of his life Mia right after they got engaged ten years ago. When a chance encounter occurs Dom sees this opportunity for what it is- the chance of a lifetime for him to make up for his past mistakes and win her back for good. When their first date in 10 years ends in disaster Dom knows that life will never be the same for him. He wakes up the next day to realize that somehow he is living the same day over again and can only hope to correct his mistakes of the first time around.
I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately despite my deep desire to escape the everyday, and How To Save a Life was so intriguing that it kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. At first encounter Dom and Mia seem so mismatched, however it isn't long until I could see why the two were so right for one another. Although Dom seems weak and indecisive at first, his personality evolves throughout the book as he learns that he is living the same day over and over again, and he tries to become the man that he knows that he always could have been.
I loved the ending because it was exactly what I wasn't expecting it to be and I'm sure that there will be many readers who end up feeling the same as I did.
I truly have to hand it to the authors who manage to write seamlessly and in the same voice. While this isn't their first book together (so they've had some practice!) I couldn't tell who was writing which part, and that is definitely the mark of a fantastic writing duo in my opinion.
Heart-wrenching and surprising, How To Save a Life is an unexpected read that will definitely keep readers turning the pages to find out what happens next.
A fast paced read even though at about the 5th Groundhog Day I was ready to scream WHERE IS THIS TAKING US! lol. Quite a lot to think about in retrospect. The synopsis pretty much says it all as the book is geared to Dom reliving the day and wanting to save Mia. The people and realizations he meets along the way also change something in Dom. Thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC.
How to Save a Life by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke is an emotional read about second chances and taking risks, particularly for those we love. The novel is based on a unique premise, one that is fully fleshed out in the hands of these veteran collaborative authors.
Dom is convinced that he has met the love of his life in Mia. When she dies under freakish and horrific circumstances on a date, Dom knows that with another chance he could save Mia's life. But are all lives meant to be saved? Living life on a loop of differing scenarios, but with the same ultimate outcome, we join Dom on a journey, and the result is oddly, yet wholly, satisfying.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for this ARC.
Finished reading How to Save a Life today by @lisaandliz which comes out July 14th. When Dom's ex-fiance Mia reappears in his life, he sees it as another chance to try again and make things right with her. However, when she dies at the end of their date, Dom pleads with the universe to let it all be a bad dream. When he wakes up, he realizes that the day has started over and he gets a chance to save her life. This book was different than anything I have read befofe and I thought the plot was definitely original. I liked the idea of Dom constantly repeating his Thursday until he did what he was supposed to do. It makes you wonder what you would do if you were in his shoes. There was also a twist in the end that I did not see coming. This book was a quick read and I really enjoyed it! Thank you @netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advance copy!
3.5 stars- This Groundhog Day-like book is the book I'd hoped The Two Lives of Lydia Bird would be. I liked this one much better in writing and tone. Dom runs into his old girlfriend Mia and relives the day over and over again. Each day he goes thru the same motions with the same ending, trying to save her life. This will almost definitely be optioned for a movie. Pretty good writing, the book flowed quickly despite it being the same day over and over. It's actually my first book by this duo even though their previous books have been on my TBR list. On the grounds of this one, I look forward to reading more from them.
Thank you Netgalley & lake Union for the opportunity to read/review
I devoured this book. The power of love, loss, grief, gut feelings. How do you move on when perhaps it is your actions that caused the loss? How do you make up for lost time and memories that will never be, most of all how do you forgive.
When I heard about this modern “Groundhog Day” story, I was dying (no pun intended...) to get my hands on it. In this book, Dom runs into his ex-fiancée after 10 years, Mia, and knows it is a sign. He hasn’t stopped loving her in 10 years, but what he doesn’t know is just how limited his time with her may be. You see, Dom is repeating June 11th over and over again, and each time he goes out with Mia, she dies tragically. Read more to find out if ultimately he can break out of this “time loop” and save the life of his life!
I didn't LOVE this book the same way I loved some of Fenton & Steinke's other books, and I just can't put my finger on why. Girls' Night Out is still my favourite of theirs, so perhaps it stems from them writing with a male lead in the book, I'm not quite sure. I did enjoy the book, and definitely felt for Dom. It might be because after the emotion turmoil I felt for Dom in chapter five - especially the end of it. So to be brought back again and again was just cruel to some extent.
That being said, I didn't hate this book, either. Their writing is still fantastic and so descriptive that I could visualize everything - and I might never go on a Zipper ride again.
As always, I will look forward to the next adventure by this writing team.
To begin, I love both authors and always look forward to their writing. I was especially surprised to see Liz Fenton as a writer/creator of Netflix's "Dead to Me." Great stuff! I am a little torn on this novel. I did enjoy it for sure, but it is one of those books where you feel you have read/seen the storyline so many times before. It basically focuses on our main character repeating a day until he gets things right. While their take on it is a little different and they certainly reference Groundhog Day in there, I just didn't feel like the plot was unique. Writing and character development was spot-on but the book dragged bit for me. Still an enjoyable read but just not my favorite.
A power-punch of emotions in this twist on Groundhog Day.
Dominic is in his 30s living in San Diego when he runs into his ex fiancé Mia, the one who got away. Dom is overjoyed at the possibility of having a new start with Mia, the woman who he has huge regrets over letting go. Dom’s happiness of having Mia back is short lived when she tragically dies during their first date. But when Dom wakes up the next morning he learns he is living the day Mia died over again. Desperate to do whatever it takes to save Mia and to be together again, he continues to live the same day over and over again just to have Mia’s life meet a tragic end. Will Dom be able to find out how to save Mia and have the life with her he’s always wanted?
How to Save a Life was one of my most anticipated reads of the year. Unfortunately this one was just so-so for me. I loved the idea of reliving the same day over again to save an old love, but this one was hard for me to get in to. While I loved the characters, I couldn’t connect with this story as much as I hoped.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
