This one did not work for me. The perspective of the male lead character just didn't work. I hated the timeline of the repeating death "groundhogs day" loop. I struggled to get to the end.
How To Save a Life is a really original read that explores just what you would do to save the person you love, how far would go?
The characters have depth and emotion and are beautifully crafted which helps to make the story a very seamless and enjoyable read.
The book is well written from a technical perspective, the prose flows well and is descriptive enough with decent dialogue. I just really find Dom incredibly unlikeable. He feels very flat as a character and even though there is profession over the course of the story, I just don’t warm to him at all. He said it himself - he’s boring. Boring people may exist in real life, but they don’t work as main characters in a novel.
He does redeem himself in some ways with the way he behaves in later chapters. But even when he does, it doesn’t make him any more likeable to me. Even at the end. I find him bland.
I think the fact they haven’t seen each other for so long really frustrates me because Dom acts like Mia belongs to him. He acts like he’s owed her love, because they were once together. His jealousy, and anger, and frustration read as unhealthy and I know part of that is maybe to do with the story. But also part of that is a massive character flaw which I find frustrating to read and boring. I’m so over jealous men who act like someone they once cared deeply about belongs to them.
I wish we’d found out more about Mia, because I feel like she was maybe the most interesting person in the story and we never really got a full glimpse of her as a person. Even towards the end of the book I feel we still never really knew her enough. It wasn’t her story to tell in many ways, but I feel like it shouldn’t have been Dom’s either.
This book has stuck with me! It gave me ALL THE FEELINGS. It was different than any other book I have read! It kept me entertained and wondering what would happen next. I highly recommend!
I love love love Lisa and Liz, anytime I see that they have a new book coming out, I quickly add it to my tbr they are a must! They never disappoint me! One thing that draws me to them is they switch genres from thriller, romance and fantasy! One afternoon Dom runs into his ex fiancée Mia who he hasn’t seen since the fateful day he ended their engagement a decade ago, never having gotten over her he hopes for a second chance and asks her out. On their date Mia dies tragically. In the hospital Dom wishes he could have saved her, he passes out wakes up and it’s the the day of his and Mia’s date again! She never died and he gets a chance to save her! It’s like Groundhog Day. Dom keeps reliving the same day over and over agin and each day he tries to figure out how to save her, and each day he learns something new about Mia and himself. As we follow Doms journey we get their backstory and how he keeps blaming himself for hurting her. This book was the most heart tugging emotional journey I’ve ever been on with a character. The lessons he learns and how he grows from them made me cry! This beautiful written book will stick with you long after the last page! Highly recommend a box of tissues! Five heart wrenching stars!
It is incredible when a book can grab you emotionally, and that is exactly what this book does!
Dom finds himself in a time loop, living the same day over and over again, where at the end of each day, his ex fiance, Mia, tragically dies.
Authors Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke do an incredible job with this Groundhogs Day-esque storyline. They have created characters that readers can identify with and root for. Although the main character is repeating the same day, the story does not feel repetitive. The authors included so much emotion in this book, that I know it will be with me for a long time. I enjoyed this book so much, and it is now the #1 book of 2020 for me.
Definitely not your average Groundhog Day book. It had all the feels. Anxious when he can’t figure it out, panic, fear, happy, blissful moments, to content when everything falls together. I do wish we could have an epilogue to see how things were a year or two later.
Dom unexpectedly runs into his ex- fiancée , Mia, that he has never fully gotten over. Despite being the one to call off the relationship, he has regretted his decision ever since. They agree to meet and catch up. While on their date, before he can confess his true feelings for her, tragedy occurs and Mia is lost forever- or so it seems. As he awakes the next day, he quickly learns that he is reliving the previous day. Although relieved that the tragic night is now just a memory, he finds himself caught in a loop. Dom is unsure how he got there and what must be done to make it end. Can he figure out how to save Mia, or is there a bigger lesson to learn?
As I was reading, I wasn’t sure how many times I would be engaged in reading about the same day over and over. However, there were enough differences to distinguish his days in order to keep me reading. And... let’s face it- it’s pretty perfect for right now. Aren’t most of us currently living in our own Groundhog’s Day of sorts?
I would recommend this for an enjoyable, quick read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC.
I gave it 5 stars. It was fun to see what each day brought Dom and how he reacted, how he grew as a person and learned about himself.
I love and have read all of the books by this awesome duo - Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke.
This reminded me so much of Sliding Doors. What would you do if the love of your life dies and you’re placed in a time loop trying to save her? That’s exactly what happens in How to Save a Life. This was smart and kept me guessing. While it could be slow and times I enjoyed this one.
WOW! This book was a fast paced read, I started it and couldn't put it down until I was finished. And I finished it with tears in my eyes and my heart a little broken, battered, and bruised. I loved Dom and Mia. I wanted to see them both happy. I felt Dom's pain every time he lost Mia. I loved that each day Dom learned something new and grew as a person.
If you have not read a book by these authors, this is definitely one to start with. It will keep you engaged and you will feel the characters in your heart.
Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Four stars for How to Save a Life by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke. Dominic is recently reunited with Mia, the one that got away. However, that reunion is short lived, when Mia dies tragically on their date, leaving Dominic with lots of unresolved and undiscovered feelings.
But fear not, as Dominic is caught in a time loop, living that day over and over again as he struggles to save Mia from what seems like an inevitable fate. Will he learn the truth to break free from the loop and live happily ever after with Mia.
A quick read that packs a punch - I enjoyed curling up with this one over a weekend. The writing is good (though occasionally the authors hit you over the head with the “moral” of the story) and the characters likeable. While it often feels like the characters are spiraling towards an inevitable end, there are enough twists and secrets uncovered to keep you reading for more.

This plot absolutely grabbed my attention. I love this faux groundhogs day/ final destination feel and knew I needed to get my hands on it.
I loved the story and how hard Dominic tried to get Mia back. I love that after all those days he still knew how worth it she is. Most importantly it teaches us how to take each day and really cherish it. It was an entertaining read but still stirred up very deep thoughts. I found myself thinking about how I leave get togethers and conversations and if I would be okay with that being the last thing I said to those people.
I won't spoil if he succeeded or not, you will have to read it to find out, you won't be disappointed!
I've never been more disappointed by a book. I never felt connected or even interested in the main character, mostly because his perspective wasn't believable. His thoughts sounded like an insecure woman not an insecure man. I don't expect hyper-masculinity and even appreciate a more feminine or sensitive hero, but he came off inauthentic in how extensively he over-analyzed everything. Then there's the unlikable woman he's so hung up on. Nothing about her personality felt endearing enough to warrant his obsession. She came off self-absorbed and that may be intentional but it didn't give enough to fight for.
That aside, I stuck with the book because of the authors. I've liked their previous books and would try another in the future but this one had me tossing the kindle, crying expletives when the big resolution is revealed. It was not a satisfying ending for me at all. I won't spoil the ending but for those who love Groundhog Day and think this will leave you feeling better about the character's growth in the end, I'm not sure you'll find it. I had hoped he'd choose to put his fate and energy into relationships with other people he encountered during this repetitive day, but he continued to make the same mistake throughout.
This is the story of Dom who reconnects with his ex-fiancee after ten years. And on the night of their first date, after they reconnect, she passes away in a terrible accident. The next morning, Dom wakes up to find he is re-living the day and tries to do things differently but alas is met with another tragic ending. Dom tries again and again, desperately hoping to save the love of his life.
I requested this story because Lauren Oliver's "Before I Fall" is one of my favorite books. And this is practically the same premise. This story didn't connect with me as powerfully as Oliver's mostly because her book is about high school and it was so resonant for me personally.
This story had a lot of touching moments and surprises. Even though I guessed the ending well before the end, I still felt attached to the characters. In fact, I wanted to know more. In a story like this, the plot makes it hard to do a lot of character development since the events of a day you relive are reasonably restricted. I still really enjoyed my time with this one and recommend it if the premise is as intriguing to you as it was to me.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for the ARC.
I had to really REALLY think about this book after I finished it. Dom and Mia had a bright future ahead of them when the story begins, and then it disappeared. Dom walked away from it all. Silly, silly man.
The Story picks up 10 years later when Dom randomly runs into Mia in a coffee shop and everything comes back. They get to talking and set up a date for Thursday June 11th. The day comes and Dom is super excited to show Mia that he is a changed man! The only problem is that Dom keeps living June 11th over and over and no matter what choices he makes, Mia always winds up dying.
I have mixed feelings about this. My heart constantly broke for Dom. No matter what he did, no matter what choices he made, the day ended the same, but there was something lacking for me. I don't know if it was lacking because the book never really dove into the reason WHY he was stuck in this time loop if no matter what he did, the day still ended the same. However, I did love the characters, especially Dom.
Books by Liz and Lisa never disappoint!!! This book was hard to put down. I had to know how Dom and Mia’s story would end. Do you think it’s possible to save someone’s life? Dom is determined to save his beloved Mia and relives the same day over and over to do just that. No spoiler but the ending surprised me and at the same time it didn’t at all. I highly recommend this book. It was a good way to escape the current state of our new normal and get wrapped up in a day never ends.
I was so excited when I was approved for this one. A lot of people will say it’s like Groundhog’s Day. It is but different. The story flows so well and even though you know what’s going to happen, you fell so bad.
Thank you Netgalley for the approval
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

“How to Save a Life” by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke is the seventh novel by the dynamic author pair, and it is the best of the bunch. A powerful and thought-provoking “Groundhog Day”-type novel, with hints of “The Time Machine”, it hits all the right chords.
Dom’s biggest regret is walking away from Mia ten years ago. After proposing, he ended their relationship out of fear and doubt. Now, she has come back into his life and he is determined to make sure they last. Tragically, Mia dies after a fall on their fast date and Dom is paralyzed with grief. When he wakes up the next day, and it is the morning of the previous day, Mia is alive and Dom is determined to keep her that way. Each and every day Dom wakes up after watching Mia die in a number of different ways, and she is once again alive and Dom is left wondering- how can he truly save Mia?
Not only did “How to Save A Life” get the Fray stuck in my head for days on end, it also left an indelible mark on my emotional soul. What would you do if you could live the same day over and over again? Would you take a risk, or play it safe? Would you change your behaviours, or stay exactly the same? And, most importantly, if you had the power to save the love of your life, how far would you go to accomplish it?
Dom is fixated on Mia, the “one who got away”, and everyone in his life tells him to move on. Desperate and obsessed, at first even I wanted to tell him to “get over it”. However, as he is reunited with Mia (again and again), the intensity of their relationship is revealed, and I began to slowly root for them. I expected this story to be repetitive, but it manages to describe the same day being played over and over again, without being boring or tedious. The ending is both sad and uplifting, but thoroughly engaging and enjoyable.
Powerful characters, deep and thought-provoking plot, and intense emotion inundate “How to Save a Life” and I must say, I loved every second. How this author pair continues to publish story after story with entertaining plots and dynamic characters is beyond me but frankly, I just want them to keep doing it.
Although the concept for this book wasn’t very original (final destination and Groundhog Day are very similar) it is a wonderful read.
Well written, heartfelt, emotive... I really enjoyed every bit of it.
An easy 4 star recommendation.
