This book had my google search history full of time loop theories, explanations for deja vu, and the physics of time travel. I started thinking I was in a time loop!! I felt like I was taking crazy pills and started questioning my own reality. I wondered, "What if we ALL have been in time loops? Is that what deja vu is!?!"
I have decided I really enjoy time loop stories like Groundhog Day and Russian Doll as there is something so interesting about the concept of being able to "re-do" everything over and over again. There is Choose Your Own Adventure element to it that is fun.
The fun in this time loop story is tempered with heartbreak, but it is a good read. Layer after layer is revealed each day and it kept me flipping through the pages to find out what questions would be answered next - what would be revealed next. It was so well-done and engaging. I was invested in what happened! I was invested in the characters. It surprised me and I was never fully sure where the story was going to end up. When I turned the last page, I felt satisfied. I still had questions, but they were not questions that the book needed to answer. They were the kind of questions that a good read can leave you with.
I will say, if I never ride a fair ride ever again, this book is to blame! I have developed fair-a-phobia, thank you very much.
This book was so good! I was hooked in from the first page and only took breaks because my family needed me. I read the whole thing in one day, because I just couldn’t put it down.
I was never a fan of the movie Groundhog Day. This story has basically the same premise. Dom is living the same day over and over again. The first time, his old flame Mia dies in front of his eyes while they are on a date. It’s horrifying. Then he wakes up, finds out Mia isn’t dead, and thinks it’s all a dream. Until it happens again.
How far will Dom go to save the woman he loves? What will HE endure to save her?
This was an interesting take on Groundhog Day. Very much like chick lit, but from a male POV, and written by female authors.
The one thing that annoyed me was how Dom's parents were wary of Mia, even though Dom was the one who broke off their engagement. Really? It was your son who fucked up and caused his own emotional distress.
Some things were a bit predictable, but the book was enjoyable nonetheless. Even with the deaths.
I don't think male authors would describe their inner thoughts like Fenton and Steinke do in this book, but that doesn't mean some males aren't sentimental.
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The cover is gorgeous, tried and true authors that I already adored and have read before - and ohhhh the story!!! I immediately fell in love with Dom - and his heart. This romantic (why are they generally tragic as well???) Groundhog's Day left me satisfied. I mean, without giving away the ending - I enjoyed the direction that it took and would love to see a sequel (please!!!) Dom's evolution throughout the book was sincere and I appreciated his heart. I was super excited to pick this one up - and couldn't read it fast enough - yet didn't want to finish it at the same time, because then I would be done!!! This is quite different to my normal. read - I tend to gravitate towards thrillers and crime as a general rule, but something about the synopsis for this book really caught my attention.
Think Groundhog Day crossed with 50 First Dates and you wouldn't be too far away from the storyline for How to Save a Life, but despite the twist on a familiar theme; this was an entertaining and enjoyable read.
How to Save a Life shares the story from the viewpoint of Dom, who bumps into Mia, his ex fiancé and "one that got away", almost 10 years after he broke it off before their wedding. He asks her out, believing that this is his chance to win her back, but on her date there is a tragic accident and Mia dies.
Dom wakes up the following morning heartbroken and confused, He is at home, not in hospital, and the day is still Thursday 11th June, Mia is alive, and yesterday was just a bad dream....wasn't it.
Determined that saving Mia's life is the key to unlocking the time loop he finds himself in, Dom relives Thursday 11th June many times, attempting to save her from her inevitable fate, but no matter what he does, she can't save her.
When reading this book I could almost picture it in my mind as if it were a film - a chick flick perhaps, but albeit a film I'd be more than happy to watch.. It's hard to fully review without spoilers, but a great read for those who believe in fate, finding your own destiny and the concept of sliding doors.
I received this book "How Too Save a Life" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own. So I have to say I really loved the last three books by Liz and Lisa so I expected another awesome book. This book was okay. I didn't like the groundhog day aspect at all. Actually I didn't really like Dom and his attitude that he needed to get back with Mia. After that many years people do change and it was unlikely they would be the same people and that things would work out. Overall I felt let down by the story and the characters.
Oh wow, what a roller coaster of a book! I was intrigued by the plot description of living the same day over and over to save someone's life but at the same time thought it was a little macabre. Well I should have trusted in the writing power of Liz and Lisa - while living the same day and watching the love of your life die again and again is heavy stuff, they managed to infuse the story with light and humor and romance. I didn't want the story to end, but the way it did was so beautiful and fitting. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was that I didn't fully connect with the main character - at times I thought he was a little whiny and over-emotional. But I felt like the other characters were well-developed and complex. And I did enjoy Dom's evolution through the story and how he changed in so many little ways over the course of the days.
**SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW**
I have enjoyed other books by Liz and Lisa but I really struggled with this one. It felt really long and drawn out, especially to have the ending it did. Dominic felt like an unrelatable character, his infatuation with Mia seemed exaggerated and over the top, he couldn't let go of the relationship they had ten years ago. I've never experienced "the one that got away" and what those feelings are like, it seems that after ten years most people would realize they have changed, they aren't the same people and that you can't jump right back into a relationship, but Dominic didn't seem to understand that. Even when his parents and best friend tried to tell him that; he wanted what he wanted and no one could talk him out of it. The fact that he relived the same day NINE times was too much, I ended up skimming through the last few days because it felt repetitive and boring. After all those days and all the back and forth the ending was a let down. The same points could have gotten through and the same lessons learned in less days and it might have been better. Overall this was a long and drawn out read with an ending that left me unsatisfied.

I recently read my first novel from the writing duo Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, Girls Night Out, and love when authors are able to switch up their writing. Their newest book follows Dom as he tries to rekindle his love for Mia, the woman he was engaged to 10 years earlier and broke it off with. After a chance encounter when he runs back into Mia, he starts repeating the same day and he has to come up with a new way each day to save her life. I was initially hesitant since plots involving déjà vu feel repetitive (whether movies/books) or can be painful (the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle comes to mind, not a fan) but really enjoyed seeing how each day repeated was so different. By far my favorite aspect was how as the book went on, we saw Dom’s character learned how many things and how often people take things for granted in life. It was a sweet story with an ending I did not expect.
Love love this book. It is a must read. Could not put it down. Go read it right now!!! These authors never disappoint. Another win.
What a unique and interesting story this was! We have all experienced some deja vu... and this books has all kinds of 'theories' and quetsions about that phenomenon. I will admit, there were times where I felt the book lagged on a bit.. but over all great read! I did find myself guessing what the main character, Dom, would do next and did find myself predicitng (correctly) what he should be doing.. The characters are easy to like, and even not understand a time or two. We have all probably been in a situation where we wondered 'what might have been' and this book leads you through that for 2 particular characters.
Great read!
Can you imagine living the same day over? In this day that you are looped in trying to save the love of your life. He didn't know it then but he does now and he will do anything it takes to get her back. This heartbreaking, romantic, suspenseful book will have you reading to the end.
The Netgalley team gave me an ARC of How to Save a Life which I appreciate the chance to read this before it comes out. I have read other books by the same authors and there seems to be a common theme by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke; they write chick lit in the form of going back in time or an alternative reality.
How to Save the Life is a Groundhog Day story. My biggest pet peeve with this story is we have to read about what happens to Dom and his one day in his life over and over. I think after the second time we readers get the point so let’s cut to the chase.
Our main character Don is trying to save the life of his ex fiancée 10 years later, only to realize June 11 happens again and he has to relive the whole day in a chance to do it differently, or so you would think. The story makes no sense in that even though he relives each day, and learns something new but obviously if it is a new day how does what happened the day matter or make any sense since it is a new day. I am not enjoying this story telling format since his growth does not come out of his waking up “from this dream” and trying to change his day by trying something different. This just doesn’t work for my interest level.
I absolutely LOVED this book! It is difficult to put into words how much this book will tug on your heartstrings, make you cry but also be incredibly inspirational at the same time. It is a very emotional read but so, so, so good. Highly, highly recommend!
What would you do if you had the chance to save a loved ones life? Dom keeps reliving the same day, one which always ends with his ex fiance Mia, with whom he has recently reconnected, dying. I read this book in a day and enjoyed the way that Doms decisions and the little changes he makes change the way the day plays out, and, ultimately, change Dom himself. A great read
If you are in need of a page turning, easy, quick read-this is for you!
Right after Dominic's ex-fiance comes back into his life unexpectedly, he keeps living through the same day over and over. The journey he takes as he discovers more about himself and those around him helps him finally get to the next day.
I found that so many things Dominic was going through- loss, regret, figuring out his life, etc. are things that we all experience, especially people in ages 25-35. There can be so much unknown and regret about choices that will impact the rest of our lives. Dominic needs to be honest and forgive himself before he can move forward with his life.
This book was a cute and light hearted read that was filled with emotion, regret, and some second chances. I love that it was set in my area of Southern California. I am quite familiar with ,many of the towns and restaurants mentioned throughout the book, most notably Pacific Coast Grill in Encinitas/Cardiff that is my favorite. Both of the main characters Dom and Mia go through a lot together and there are even a few twists and surprises. I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did but anything written by Liz Fenton is a must for me. I loved both The Good Widow and Girls' Night Out, so when I saw this I was like, "yes, please!"
Plus I love the song "how to save a life" by the fray which is the title and mentioned throughout the book as couple's song for their relationship.
Read this new book and The Good Widow and you wont be sorry. Thanks to Netgalley, Liz Fenton and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Anything by this best friend duo is ALWAYS a winner! This book was great ! This was unlike anything else I've read lately and it was a welcome change from the psychological thrillers I tend to gravitate to. This was gripping from the very first page. I loved it! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. .
Oof! This one hurts! How to Save a Life is beautiful and heartbreaking. It will take your heart and break it over and over again. Honestly, it will break your heart about nine times. It's the story of Dom who messes up and get another chance with the love of his life Mia. It's a heartbreaking twist on Groundhogs day. He's reliving the same day over and over again trying to save the woman he loves. I loved this book. It was hard to read but a really beautiful story.
This was something new from these authors and I liked it a lot! It was a twisty, romanctic, fantasy-esque story and as someone who tends to stay away from fantasy, I really enjoyed this and it didn't take away from my enjoyment..
