I wanted to love this book. The story sounded really good and has some great reviews. It just did not work for me.
I am a big fan of Danielle Giard’s Anna Schwartzman series because ira is a twisty mystery told from multiple POVs. She could combined suspense, mystery, and also a little bit of romance and the result is a fast paced police story that deserve 5 stars. I can wait to start the next one
This just didn’t end up being a book that interested me. When I first read the premise, I was very excited and invested, but getting into it made it clear that it just wasn’t for me. Hopefully it works for others out there!
DNF - did not finish. I could not connect with the writing style/plot so I decided to not pick this one up. Thank you, NetGalley and publisher for the early copy!
Enjoyed this fast paced thriller! My first by her but not my last. Opened with a bang and the pace didn’t let up. The ending kept me guessing as well!
White Out by Danielle Girard

Thank you Netgalley for this digital copy to read.
Kylie Milliard is the only female detective in Hagen, North Dakota, and she wants out. She just needs one big case to solve to get her transferred somewhere else. But Hagen is a small town where everyone knows everyone and nothing ever happens.
And then, something does.

I really enjoyed this book!
-I loved the different POVs we get in the book.
-I loved trying to solve what was going on and who was not trustworthy.
-The white out scene was SO SUSPENSEFUL and I needed to NOT be interrupted!!!!!
-I also love that this is going to be a series and I have already started the second book, Far Gone.

4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ great thriller!
This was my first book by Danielle Girard and I was very pleased. I love a good police procedural. It reminded me very much of Lisa Gardner’s books, whom I am a huge fan of! While the twist wasn’t unsurprising or unpredictable, I was still entertained throughout. I am looking forward to the second badlands novel, which I already have downloaded to read.
❄️White Out ❄️
This book started out strong —- The first chapter will have you holding your breath as a woman (Lily) wakes up inside a car with no recollection of what happened previously, and, wait for it... there’s an unconscious driver beside her and the car is about to tip over the edge of an overpass! Any sudden movement will surely send them plunging to their deaths!!! Quite an opening right??? There’s also a woman murdered on that same night and is being investigated by Detective Kylie. As the story proceeds, Kylie soon learns that there’s a connection between Lily and the dead woman, linking them to a past that seems to be coming back to haunt them. 😱 Like the gripping opening, White Out will have us on edge the whole time and guessing and second guessing who’s the culprit!! I absolutely enjoyed reading this from start to finish, so much so that I read it in one go! Truly “unputdownable”! The snowy setting in a small town plus the short chapters and multiple POVs sure helped build up the suspense! Fans of No Exit and The Child Finder will enjoy reading this fast-paced thriller. I love this so much that I want it to be a Netflix movie!!!! Rating: 🔖🔖🔖🔖🔖/5

Thank you to author Danielle Girard for reaching out to me and gifting me with an e-ARC of White Out in exchange for an honest review. ❄️❄️❄️
Through rotating perspectives, the reader follows along as the police try to solve the murder of a woman in this twisty mystery/thriller. Memory loss in storylines is not a favorite of mine - I do think it fit in well with the plot for this story.
Fresh, twisty psychological thriller about crimes then and now..
Young woman finds herself in a car, obviously after a crash. But how come she is there...and who she is??? With only some fragments of memories and deeply instilled untrust, she tries to put her life together.
She obviously is a Lily Baker, as the documents say and people say, too. There is a place, a man...and a history there.
Iver, the bar owner with PTSD, does not remember how he spend the last night. And the police are here to question him about the dead woman...near the pub. Can he...???
Kylie, the detective, does not like to be lied to.
And there is the kidnapping few years ago...
I like the swift pace of this read, makes you being engaged! I appreciate that the plot is based on mental health-related issues, their blurriness and mystery add to the believability and readability.
While I think that the plot gets overcomplicated towards the end, its catchiness, smart takes on various life experiences and the atmosphere make for compelling read.
What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.
Today I’m excited to share my review for White Out by Danielle Girard!
Publishing Date: August 1, 2020
Synopsis: After surviving a car accident on an icy road in Hagen, North Dakota, Lily Baker regains consciousness with no idea where or who she is. Scattered Bible verses and the image of a man lying in a pool of blood haunt her memory.
The same night of the accident, a young woman is murdered and tossed in a dumpster. Kylie Milliard, Hagen’s only detective, doesn’t immediately recognize the victim, but Kylie soon discovers that Lily and the dead woman share a dark past…if only Lily could remember what it was.
Lily and Kylie both want answers. But Kylie has to play by the book. Lily has to play it safe. And the more Lily learns about her identity, the more she fears the truth.
Review: full confession, Danielle asked me to review her upcoming book aka this book a long time ago and it’s no longer upcoming but so so successful on Amazon!! Ah! Danielle, I’m so sorry for the delay! Better late than never, right? Anyways, I was hooked on this book and got so into it I love the small town vibes that remind me of Megan Miranda’s The Girl From Widow Hills- so atmospheric! The characters were people I was so intrigued with and wanted to know more! I couldn’t believe some of the twists and turns in this story and it kept me guessing. I can’t believe how it ended and didn’t see that coming! So into all the action and multiple points of view. It has been a while since I got so into a book and wanted to read as much as I could. For a while I was on a kick where I was reading a lot of suspense and thrillers and now I’m not. This is definitely a good push back into these kinds of books and I’m so glad I got to this one. You don’t want to miss this book or the next in the series coming out in June- because she’s a hustler and crushes writing so much! I want to read all her stuff now- so stay tuned for more reviews of her work!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
also side note- reading Danielle Girard’s book has made me want to write again! This Professional Writing major in me wants to write!
Special Thank You to @daniellegirardbooks
Fell a bit short for me. I tried to read this previously and had to put it down because the characters and the plot were just not working for me. I picked it up again recently and felt the same if not worse about it. There were some unplausible situations and some very unlikeable/poorly written characters. Overall it was a bit of a dude for me. Sorry!
First in the Badlands Series
This book started out with a bang for me. I was completely intrigued and all in with the plot of a female with amnesia waking up in the middle of a traffic accident. However, there were too many pieces of the puzzle that didn't come together naturally for me and were convoluted and forced. I couldn't keep up with all of the players in the story since some of them were not fully fleshed out. The major characters were introduced in depth, but there were other characters that I couldn't tell apart and some of them were significant to the story.
I will definitely look for this author and continue reading her series and standalones in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author and publisher for letting me read and review this book.
Lily wakes up after a car accident next to a man she doesn’t recognize. She has no memory and idea where she is. All she has an ID, a purse, an old Bible and a gun. In nearby Hagen, North Dakota, Detective Kylie Milliard gets a call about a murder in the normally sleepy town. As the case develops, a dark past between Lily and the victim becomes clear and regaining her memory is more important than ever.
I absolutely loved White Out. It’s atmospheric and the location is so well developed and really is a character on its own. The book has sharp writing, great plotting and strong characters and in particular developed and complex female characters. The mystery is gripping and the ending totally surprised me!
Far Gone is the next book in the series and it’s out in July. I can’t wait !
Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer and the author for the eARC.
This was first book by Danielle Girard that I read and definately I want more!! It was a perfect suspense/mystery read. It’s a fast-paced, action packed, police procedural read with lots of twists and turns told from multiple POVs.
This was a really good mystery book that intrigued me the whole time. I enjoyed the characters as well as the plot and enjoyed being surprised at the ending because I don't see it coming.
This is a great & suspenseful thriller! This is one that I think may be better suited for the Lifetime movie crowd than the Dateline crew - no shade at all!
This book was a wild ride. I literally had no idea who the bad guy was or who was telling the truth. Two people with amnesia not telling anyone was a bit far fetched but it did make for a great story. I was rooting for Iver and really hoping his amnesia wasn’t covering up anything bad but I wasn’t 100% sure if he could be trusted. Lily was also a great character. It was interesting to follow her rediscovering who she was and not liking what she found. I wasn’t sure about Kylie though. I couldn’t tell if I liked her or not but by the end she had grown on me. The ending was definitely a shock and quite the dramatic event. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Wow! White Out was a fantastic suspense novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development and flow of the novel.
