This book exasperated me. It sounded right up my alley -- quick, healthy food, lots of options for gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, etc. and it even has tons of color photos. I gave up entirely on reading the whole thing after multiple efforts because it was so aggravating though, and just skimmed it as well as I could for the purpose of review.
First off, it's in some weird formatting in the digital ARC that I received that made it really hard to read on either of the devices I use for reading (an older iPad with the ADE app or my desktop as a backup). The end result was that every recipe took up way more than one screen and it was a nearly 500 page document (broken into these oversized pieces) that was totally frustrating to try to read. It seems to be the kindle version instead of the usual PDF of the print version, but it can't be scaled down like a regular kindle book. I can't read it at all on my iPad and I'm not going to sit at my desk and read a 486 "page" (really pieces of pages) document of recipes that don't even appeal to me.
Which brings me to the second issue. These just don't strike me as particularly tasty recipes, or quick really. I wouldn't characterize them as quicker than quick. They're just recipes. Many call for ingredients I don't stock (collagen powder in a smoothie? um, no. "Drizzle with truffle oil?" sure, if I can train our dog to find us some truffles).
I appreciate that there are color coded letters to tell you if recipes fit a particular need, but they were confusing and cluttered. vg-a, ve-a, df-a, gf-a, and so on (these mean you can adapt them to vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, etc.) but it just ended up a little crazy looking with all the colors and letters.
And as another reviewer pointed out, there is absolutely no nutritional information. If you're publishing a book of so called healthy recipes, you really need to provide information about the nutritional content. What's healthy to one person is not necessarily to another.
As mentioned, the photos are fantastic. I love that just about every recipe has a photo. If it had been given in a format where I could easily read the recipes and see the photos for each, I might have found some useful recipes and scored it higher. As it was, every recipe took up as much as 4 pages to look at and I just gave up mining for good ones.
I viewed a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review. I am not counting this as a "read" book since I was unable to properly read it, but I did my best to skim it enough to review.
The recipes appear clear and concise, that's good for quick cooking. But many of the recipes are very basic, almost to the point of being common sense. It does have a lot of recipes. Despite that I didn't find much that I wanted to make for my family. I would've liked to see nutritional info for each dish.
This is an incredible cookbook - I highly recommend it! There are a variety of recipes, surely something to suit every craving. The recipes are relatively easy and use healthy, plant-based ingredients. I look forward to trying many recipes, especially Zucchini Bread Porridge, Chinese Chicken Salad, Spanish Garlic Shrimp, and No-Bake Brownies.
Thank you, Hachette Books and NetGalley!
I love the amount of healthy recipes there are and the steps for them are simple. The recipes tastes great.
Every person who has the primary responsibility of managing their family diet and food budget knows that the two do not necessarily work toward the same goal. So we look for recipes that will fit into our time, tastes and wallet. Pamela Salzman obviously had the same problems I do when trying to bump up our diet. Her recipes are not just quick, they are tasty and use standard pantry ingredients. You do not have to add another shelf in your cabinet for new items. We have tried at least half of these recipes so far and will keep trying the rest. So far, none of them have received a thumbs down!!!
I loved this cookbook. The variety of recipes is incredible. There's even an Instant Pot section. No nutritional values on the recipes, and not many pictures, but these are hardly detracting from the overall cookbook. I really found the chapter toward the beginning of the book with all the tips on time reduction. A great guide for someone just learning to cook.
I have followed Pamela Salzman online and on social media since discovering her Thanksgiving prep guides on her website. Pamela provides an endless supply of useful tips tricks and recipes. I really enjoyed her first cookbook, Kitchen Matters, and was excited to receive an ARC of her newest book. Since I follow her on Instagram, I knew that she and her family often follow a whole foods, plant based diet, so I wondered if this new cookbook would contain mostly vegetarian or vegan recipes. I was pleased to find that Quicker Than Quick offers a variety of different recipes that can all be modified for different dietary preferences (she gives suggestions and tips). This made the cookbook so much more useful, as so many people these days seem to have different preferences regarding what they eat (my own family members included). All of the recipes look delicious and do-able to me. This is a great book filled with beautiful photographs. I am very eager to start cooking!
I have an unmoving, non-negotiable, requirement for cookbooks that promote healthy recipes: NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION for every recipe.
This cookbook has none.
Health, nutrition, and meal plans come and go in popularity. Saying a recipe is "healthy" can mean many things to many people. For some, "healthy" might mean gluten-free and for others it might mean low sugar. That's why any cookbook claiming to have a healthy recipes must have the nutritional information as a guideline to those who would make these recipes.
While this book does have helpful tools that tell you at a glance if a recipe is gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian it has no info about calories, sugars, fats, etc. The lack of this vital information makes this cookbook completely useless to me.
And part of what is frustrating is that it is very easy and takes almost no time for a cookbook author to include that nutritional information. Anyone can plug-in the amounts and ingredients in the recipe online and find out the nutritional information per serving. But as someone who pays for a cookbook touting healthy recipes that step should be left to the cookbook author and not the consumer.
Very disappointing.
I loved this cookbook for multiple reasons. It has many unique recipes to get you out of your food rut, many of which are vegetarian! There are also beautiful photographs contained throughout the book. That being said, the content was a little incongruous to the title for me. Some of these recipes are pretty sophisticated. They have relatively simple directions, but the ingredients used are not necessarily common or inexpensive, so this cookbook may be a little inaccessible for some. So many recipes sound delicious and I can’t wait to try! My favorite thing about this cookbook is that the author makes suggestions for many of the recipes to become vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. Very few cookbooks make it clear how to adapt recipes. There are TONS of vegetarian recipes and the author uses meat in minority of recipes, which you never see in a non-vegetarian cookbook. I strongly recommend this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Books for providing an ARC of this book.
Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Um. Well. I'm sure there are useful things in this for many people, but the ingredients are too weird for me. Just . . . not quite my thing, perhaps. I wanted to like these recipes, because I want to eat healthy, but I had to look up a lot of ingredients and I'm still not sure why I should eat some of them.
Love this book and love this author. I bought her first book, Kitchen Matters after borrowing it from my local library. I love all of her recipes and the photos make you want to get in the kitchen and start cooking.
Highly recommend this one!
I currently own and love her Pamela salzman’s first cookbook Kitchen Matters. She outdid herself wwith Quicker Than Quick. As with the first one there are sooo many recipes I want to make. There are recipes for every time of the day, from breakfast, appetizers , salads to dessert and basic kitchen staples. Recipes are nutritious and quick without using boxed or ready made items, made from scratch. Weeknight arroz con pollo was a hit, just like the mom makes (Puertorrican just like the author’s mother in law) but less work and faster. I am sitting down writing this review after serving my family the lentil and vegetable soup from the Instant pot recipe section from this book. Yes!! This book is about getting in the kitchen and preparing food fast so it includes some instant pot and microwave recipes. The book have gorgeous pictures of the finished dish, a feature that is really important for me. Each recipe provides states how many people it serves and are coded for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. This book just like her first one is going to be used very often in my kitchen.
Oh, I loved this cookbook! So many delicious recipes that had my mouth watering. And several recipes that I want to cook that I never thought I’d be interested in, like the kelp noodles. It is easy to follow and even had a photo to show what it looks like. Highly recommend to anyone who needs to feed a family in a healthy way.
Pamela Salzman is like my California Barefoot Contessa. I was so excited to get this ARC and devoured it as soon as it arrived. This book offers so many "fast" recipes that are healthy, delicious and unique. The photos are gorgeous and the narratives for the recipes are fun to read. I love that she offers vegan and gluten free options for almost every recipe. This makes my cooking options more flexible when I cook for my family. I really like the Trader Joe's and gluten free pasta tips. Her mason jar instant soups are brilliant. I can't wait to hold this book in my hands (I pre ordered it ages ago). It will take a prominent spot on my kitchen counter as I eat my way through these yummy recipes!

Lots of types of recipes here and everything should be made in 30 minutes or less. I love s good recipe that’s also quick to make.
There’s everything from appetizers, to salads, soups, main courses, dressings, even desserts.
The chicken recipe sound best to me. I have bookmarked a Chinese chicken salad recipe, a Mexican soup, and baked feta as some of the most delicious sounding recipes,
There’s also a chicken Schwarma that looks fantastic.
