Flame is the next Dark Kings book in New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant's series. This book gave me all the emotions. This book was so sexy. This is my first in this series but I will definitely be reading more!!!
Cain's story is definitely engaging. He must protect Noreen from the Others. We get brief glimpses in what is to come as we near the end of the series. I think Flame leads nicely into the conclusion of the series. I cannot wait for Con and.... So excited.
A steamy paranormal fantasy that can easily be read as a standalone novel. An addictive series that pulls you in keeping you second-guessing and just when you think you have it figured out the author yanks it all out of reach. The Dark Kings series will have you holding your breath as it takes you on an emotional roller coaster.
When I said wow I truly meant that in all the big, positive and negative, stunned wow you could possibly mean. The sheer number of secrets and surprises was staggering. The changes in Rhi were also astounding, though those weren't quite surprising since we've had book after book detailing her struggles. But when everything is combined, bombs are dropped, betrayal rocks the boat, and a confrontation with a monologuing villain, all the changes could mean something bad or something great is on the horizon and I'm not exactly sure how everything will play out in the last book.
Getting the Dragon King's history in the way Noreen got it was utterly unique and the perspective both in the telling and in the knowledge gained was incredible and far more potent than any other retelling thus far. There were emotions felt, passed on, and experienced in a way that was unattainable before now because of the gift only Noreen possessed. So when Moreanne's plan through Noreen was revealed it meant an incredible amount of pain and a betrayal we all saw coming yet hoped wouldn't actually happen. Thank goodness for friends and allies they could count on to help them sort through that mess. There was a question of what was added to Moreanne's spell that was unanswered and hopefully that will get resolved when Inferno comes out.
I will say that the monologuing villain was a bit too much, a bit too heavy-handed. While it did answer some questions as well as bring up even more, it was a slightly predictable scene that could have been finessed into something a bit less cliche. The one unpredictable bit was who showed up to perform the rescue. That was something I didn't see coming.
There are so many times that the "cliffhanger" bits at the end of each story hint at more trouble or the next step, but the lead-in to Inferno was incredibly painful and huge. We've known from the first who would be the pair and I have both doubts and hopes for how their story will play out. For now though, one tumultuous relationship is enough and I'm glad for a tiny breather until we get the big battle, the redemption, the healing, the groveling, the passion, and the conclusion we've all been waiting for.
I'm loving this whole series and am looking forward to the next one. This was such a great addition to Ms. Grant's books. I loved the characters and the storyline.
Noreen discovers that everything she believed in was a lie. Knowing she could never live with herself if she didn't warn the Dragon Kings of the Other's plans, she reaches out but tries to keep her identity secret. Cain is put in charge of finding out everything about the person sending the warning and discovers Dark Fae Noreen. Now Noreen is in danger and Cain, although she is his enemy has a plan to keep her safe not to mention new found feelings begin to arise, will it work?
There is so much more to the story that I am not going to divulge because if you are new to this series or a fan of this series you are going to want to read how this plays out. I thought the story started with a bang and did not let up and by the end I was not sure how it would play out. Another wonderful addition to the series.
I have read Donna Grant in the past but never read this series. I absolutely love an enemies to lovers romance. It makes the sexual chemistry so steamy and it was off the rails. It was a page Turner I was hooked until the very last page. I love the twist and turns of the plot I was at the edge of my seat.
The Flame is the precursor to the last book of the Dark Kings series. Things are so heightened right now and the Flame just took it even higher!
Cain seems like a laid back yet loyal King. He is determined to check out this lead the Kings have received. The whole book though, the question in the back of you mind is, "is this a trick". Things are not as they seem, but Cain seems to be positive and believe what is in front of him. I didn't know whether I wanted to slap him and tell him to be more cautious, or defend what seemed to be his true happiness.
I did not trust Noreen. She claims to be a deserter of the Others, yet the Others have proved to be beyond tricky. Noreen could be a really good actress. The author seems to take you on a roller coaster ride with Noreen.
I was on edge throughout most of The Flame. The excitement continues to build. Rhi is going through major changes and we can't help but wonder if the Dark in her will win out. I'm pleading with the good in Rhi to win. Just another aspect of this book to keep you fascinated and engaged.
When I started reading Flame I was wondering where this author would take us this time A this series, is a rather long one and let's be true to each other - mostly those series turn into something that is strange, to say the least, and readers are losing their fav series to something strange.
Yet here I am - giving this one five stars as I really enjoyed how Flame followed!
The story starts at the point where no one knows if what is before their eyes is true and no one can vouch for it! Cain is sent to investigate that. But when he sees Noreen there is something growing between them but is that possible between Fae and Dragon King? Or this will end before it even started? Be sure to read carefully as it's easy to get lost with all those characters.
Ms. Grant added later in the story some parts that made this story one of the deepest I read from her. What had happened in the past? Can this be forgotten and forgiven or all hopes will die when the truth surfaces?
I can't wait to see what will happen in the next story as.this one gave me happiness, sadness, anger, loves, well insight into both characters.
While I love the Dragon Kings, for some reason it took me a little longer to read this book. Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. But as a beautiful dark fae contacts the kings with information about the others, he knows he will at least listen to her if it will protect his brethren. Noreen is horrified by what her kind and the malevolent Others are planning for the Dragon Kings. Dark Fae or not, there are lines she will not cross. She knew that contacting them would be equal to signing her own death warrant, but she had to do it. And so Noreen and Cain escape to the fae realm to buy themselves some time until she could tell him all she knew. What they find in the destroyed fae realm is a heaven they couldn't have expected. What had once been total desolation and destruction was alive again. Had it been the powerful Rhi that restored life within a shield to the realm? This and so many other questions are answered as the kings and their allies come closer to destroying the others and the vindictive Usaeil. It is another Dragon King tale of twisted fate, love, betrayal, despair, and hope. I can't wait for Inferno to arrive!
My heart was racing cuz I know we’re almost done. One more book!
So many questions about the Others were answered and now we’re a few steps closer to the epic finale. I’m not ready though. I know it’s gonna rip my heart out. Parts of this one already did, and I knew who they were talking about!
Rhi, as always, has a bigger role in this game than I originally thought, and I’m so excited about this. And seeing Con’s reaction to everything makes him feel more human. Do I like seeing him this way? No. But I gotta believe it’ll be worth it in the next book.
Cain was raised to fight the Fae. Noreen is supposed to hate the Dragon King's. When Noreen finds out that the Dark Fae have planned for the Dragon Kings she's not keeping it to herself. Cain and Noreen meet and are drawn to each other. In spite of their different histories they long to be together.
This was a great book. I enjoy these Dragon King books.
Really enjoyed this heart racing, action packed and emotionally thrilling adventure filled with dangerous and engaging carters, witty dialog, exciting twists and undeniable passion. Was a great reading from beginning to end and so hard to put down.
What a series...this series is pretty long running as the Dragon Kings fight to keep the Fae from taking over the human realm. In this one Cain find his mate in a dark Fae named Noreen. Noreen has switched sides to help give information to the kings since she has become aware of what the Fae and Others are planning.
What did I like? You really have to read this series in order to get the best out of it since everything seems to be on a time line. I keep agonizing over Rhi and Con wondering why they can’t get their act together. We are almost pushing book twenty and these two have been dancing around each other since book one. Still this is a fabulous series!
Would I buy or recommend? Yes... but start from the beginning. I think once we get the last book I’m going to reread the series. Even with almost twenty books ...every book is a gem. Five star series.
I received a complimentary copy to read!
Donna Grant delivered a enticing paranormal romance!
I really found Noreen and Cain interesting to follow. Noreen is a compelling figure in herself. She is a dark fae and has decided maybe its time to change sides in the war. Cain is a warrior and has found himself compelled to protect Noreen. To evade those that would seek them harm they have to hide in Faerie for a time. Both Cain and Noreen have a long history and the present is unpredictable at best.... Star crossed lovers at its best!!!
I would rate this a four out of five. I loved the steamy read and hope to explore other books by the author. I would recommend this to a read who enjoys a sizzling romance. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This ARC was provided by Netgalley.
This author never fails to dissapoint. Love the Continuation of the Dragon Kings. A great story and can't wait for the next installment
‘Flame’ is the seventeenth story in the ‘Dark Kings‘ series… and brings us even closer to the finale of this series. I frankly won’t know how to exist without another ‘Dark Kings‘ story, or connecting story to look forward to… maybe a tad bit overdramatic, but I will miss this world so very much – but that’s for another day, right now we have ‘Flame‘ to talk about.
… or not really talk about. ‘Flame‘ will reveal so much, answer many questions… and give rise to even more questions before we’re given those answers that have burned our reading souls for so long now. But not just yet. I won’t be revealing any of that here – no. You need to experience this adventure for yourself first hand. Most of what you’d want to know can be found in the cover description – but Cain and Noreen, they are simply amazing and you’ll get to know them, their motives, their hearts quite well before ‘Flame‘ concludes.
It always amazes me that just the right people are coupled together in this series. Even though Noreen was Dark Fae, she’s changed, she doesn’t believe as they do any longer, and she’s risking her very long life to try to warn the Dragon Kings of the treachery heading their way. To pair her with Cain, who hates anything remotely related to the Fae is a brave, and satisfying move. Watching them work through their preconceived ideas about each other, to battle not only the enemy but their own desires for each other was intriguing, sexy, and so worth every moment of lost sleep. This is a couple that belongs together, and it shows.
I’ve said I won’t talk much about this story and I won’t. I absolutely loved ‘Flame‘, it’s probably among my top five favorites from this series. Soon ‘Inferno‘ will be released and while I want to ‘know’ what happens… I don’t want to really let go of this world. I would highly recommend not only this story but the entire series (novellas included) to any reader no matter your preferred genre, but especially to Paranormal Romance or Fantasy readers. Buckle up, buttercup – it’s going to be quite a ride!
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Living among the Dragon Kings, Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. He is a warrior born—and every instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind safe. But when a fringe member of the Dark Fae contacts the Kings with an urgent warning, Cain is torn for the first time. How can he trust this beautiful creature when resisting his primal attraction to her is battle enough?
I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted this to be Con’s book, so I don’t mind admitting my initial disappointment when it was Cain instead of Con. However, I then delved into the book and lost my disappointment. Right from the beginning, I was pulled into Noreen’s situation and Cain’s determination. By the end, I was disappointed again, but only because the book was over. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for Con’s book next month! I highly recommend.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
Things are heating up in the world of the Dragon Kings! With some new revelations about our favourite and not so favourite characters in the series and the addition of some new characters we are beginning to see that maybe, just maybe the Others aren’t as strong as we have been led to believe!
Noreen is one of the Others. A dark Fae plus an Other, she may just be the worst possible candidate for the love interest of a Dragon King, but we find out that there is much more to her story than what meets the eye and with her willingness to help the Dragon Kings in defeating the evil which she has served for for so long, she may just be the thing that a Dragon King like Cain needs. But can he even trust a dark Fae who has vowed to end the Dragon Kings?
Cain has been given the assignment of finding out the truth about Noreen. Is she really who she claims to be in the email she sent to Dreagan? Or is this all just another one of the Others’ ploys to destroy the Kings? But both Cain and Noreen can’t help the attraction and connection they feel for another and discover not only the truth but a lot about themselves.
Rhi makes a comeback and I’m so happy to see that she’s badder and sassier than before. With so many questions still waiting to be answered, I’m glad to say that this amazing series looks like it will be with us for some time. Yay!!!!!
It has only taken 17 books to get some answers. Finnaly this investment is paying off. This was better than her last few installments. Seeing noreen and Cain go from enemies to lovers was very well done. Their minds weren't instantly changed, they worked through their issues. Looking forward to book 18.
