I could not put this book down. Jill Shalvis just gets better with every story she writes. The Summer Deal features Brynn, who is back in town after a bad breakup, Kinsey, a childhood frenemy of Brynn's from camp and Eli...another camp friend and Brynn's first kiss. As the three come together, new and past relationships are revealed and, as the story got deeper, i found myself warmed by the idea that friends can really be the family you choose.
Brynn is the girl who is just trying to find her home and her way after various jobs and choices she's made. Kinsey is battling a failing liver transplant and, while she comes across as cranky and mean, is really one of the strongest people in this story. Eli....a sexy, nerdy marine biologist, is the calming presence despite having demons of his own. Add in fun, spirited brother Max and...possibly my favorite....Kinsey's friend-with-benefits, Deck, and this group just got to me. I loved watching them interact with one another and how they all really become a family by the end.
The Summer Deal is part of Shalvis's Wildstone women's fiction series. She has always been a top favorite of mine and this book truly continues that trend. I loved everything about this read and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, funny, uplifting read.
Brynn has returned home with her tail between her legs. After a bad breakup, she flees to Wildstone to her two loving but smothering moms. A chance meeting with an old friend, Eli, brings her nemesis Kinsey back into her life; Kinsey and Brynn were bunk-mates at camp and notoriously disliked each other. But now Brynn is roommates with her crush Eli, his brother Max, and Kinsey.
Kinsey is hiding a few secrets from Brynn, and it's hard to tell which is worse: that Kinsey in renal failure or that they're half sisters. Kinsey is prickly and likes to keep people at a distance. She'll have to fight her impulse to push everyone away if she wants to keep her sister, her best friend, and her not-boyfriend.
This book is another winner from Jill Shalvis. I'm a fan of her work, but this book felt different from some of her other novels. Perhaps it was the alternating POVs of Kinsey and Brynn, or the fact that Kinsey was an asshole (but a lovable asshole) when many of her characters are similar to Brynn, in that they are overly nice. This may be one of my favorite Jill Shalvis novels - kidney transplants are near and dear to my family, and while there was a lot of romance, which I love, there was also a lot of story and drama.
I absolutely adored this book. The characters were so real that it sucked you in and made you feel a part of the story. You didn't want it to end!
Brynn, Kinsey and Eli went to summer camp together for baby years. Brynn and Eli were each other’s first kiss. Kinsey and Eli are like brother and sister. But Kinsey and Brynn actually are sisters and Brynn doesn’t know.
Brynn just got out of a bad relationship and goes back to her hometown. She winds up in the hospital after a panic attack which causes her to run into Eli. She hasn’t seen Eli in 14 years.
Eli is at the hospital with Kinsey. Kinsey and Brynn were frenemies at best and they haven’t seen each other in 14 years either. Eli wants Kinsey to finally tell Brynn that they are half sisters. He convinces Brynn to come see the room he has for rent. His other roommates are Kinsey and his brother Max.
Kinsey keeps everyone at a distance because she’s afraid she won’t live long. She has a great guy in her life named Deck but she keeps him at a distance. She keeps everyone but Eli at a distance.
Eli decides to force Kinsey and Brynn into spending time together. In the process, he falls for Brynn.
I think the characters in the book are quite likable, especially Eli, Deck and Brynn. The dramas in the story are interesting but not over the top.
This was a light, easy read.
I didn’t realize it was a series book but it seems to work well as a stand alone too.
I got to read an early copy from NetGalley. Thanks!
I now have a new favorite Jill Shalvis book! I laughed, I cried and I wanted to smack some people on the back of the head, mainly Kinsey. Brynn and Eli were hot, hot, hot! I loved the family unity between the family Eli created and Brynn's Moms. A not to be missed book by an amazing author.
Jill Shalvis never disappoints, and The Summer Deal is one of her best. Sometimes the family we choose is what gets us through life. The family story in The Summer Deal will tweak every emotion you have.
This was my first Jill Shalvis book and I'm so glad I requested it! It is rare that you find a book with relatable characters who have struggled in life but are still healthy, relatively well-rounded people who are doing their best to leave the world a better place. Eli is by far my favorite character, he is smart, loving, thoughtful, loyal, handsome, confident without being cocky, and overall he has learned to create a family when his biological family wasn't worth the air they were breathing. His love interest Brynn is flailing a little, but she is trusting, adventurous, honest, and someone you'd want to be friends with. Kinsey, Max, and Deck round out the group and have you riding a roller-coaster of emotions throughout the book.
Shalvis created multi-dimensional characters, a beautiful setting, a truly emotional experience with highs and lows, and a wonderfully paced book. I can't wait to read another one of her novels!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy provided by NetGalley.
Pippa, My Secret Book Spot
Jill Shalvis never disappoints and this book was no exception. This is a story about sisters and family whether by blood or chose. I loved the relationship between all the characters and their back and forth banter. I found myself laughing and crying while reading this book, and the ending was perfect. Thanks Netgalley for this ARC.
In Jill Shalvis’s new women’s fiction book, THE SUMMER DEAL, Ms. Shalvis just may have given us one of the best friends-as-family stories I’ve ever read.
Brynn Turner described herself as a loser. In life, in love, and in her career. After being left high and dry be her user-boyfriend, she comes back home To Wildstone to lick her wounds and try to find her self. What she finds is something she never expected to: family, love, and acceptance.
Kinsey Davis made Brynn’s life miserable when they used to attend summer camp together. But Kinsey has a secret she’s been keeping for 15 years that concerns Brynn. When the two meet up again, a meeting orchestrated Kinsey’s BFF Eli, that secret gets harder and harder to keep, esp when Kinsey discovers how wonderful a person Brynn really is.
I hate spoilers so I won’t tell you what the secret is, but just know – it’s a doozy.
Told with her usual witty flare and exceptional instinct for showing emotions, this book was simply wonderful. I know it’s going to be another Shalvis best-seller, so thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins for allowing me a sneak peek at one of 2020 summers’ best.
5 well deserved stars from me.
The Summer Deal is a book about family...those created by blood and those created by choice. The characters and situations created by Ms.Shalvis draw the reader into the story completely and don’t let go even after the last word is read. The author does a wonderful job revealing her characters’ secrets and feelings as she slowly peels away their layers to reveal fears, hopes, longings, hurts, tragedies, and loves of the two men, two women and one “friend with benefits without the friendship” angle who share a house. I loved every minute spent reading the book and found it hard to put down. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. Most highly recommend.
There isn't a negative thing I have to say about this book, I have to be honest at first I was going to but then I got deeper in it and I changed my mind. What more can you want from this book? You have family love, romance , friendenemies and a sibling rivalry. The ending was better than I thought it would be. I have always been a fan of the books that Jill Shalvis has written. She grabs my attention by making the characters seem real.. If I had the chance to ask her a question , it would be where does she get the story lines and the characters name? .
After several tries of being approved for requests, I finally got to read this one from Harper Collins. I hope they continue to let me read books in exchange for an honest review.. I am also grateful for netgalley and the tips they give for reviews and ratios.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This is the first book I have read from Jills Shalvis and absolutely loved her writing style. I can’t wait to read more by her.
What a fun story ! The characters were unique, with unique relationships. I enjoyed watching them develop throughout the pages. I will definitely recommend this. Thanks Netgalley for the ARC !
Great story! It was funny, warm, and a great romance. The love between sisters is evident as you get closer to the end of the story but it reaches out to you and hooks you. There is no doubt that you need to finish this book to see what happens between the sisters and the loves of their lives.
This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins Publishers - William Morrow Paperbacks in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I absolutely loved this book. I did not want to stop reading it and every page was a surprise! I loved the relationship between Brynn and Kinsey reconnecting and then frenemies turned life-long sisters. Brynn realizes that there is more to life than what she knew from the past. She reconnects also with Eli and then childhood crush becomes new love but, Brynn is still resenting all of this just from a past experience involving Brynn and Eli. Once Brynn lets god of the past, she can have it all and still be happy. I love Jill Shalvis' books because the theme is an important life lesson that all can relate to and can reflect on and this time it's letting go of the past. I know her books have done very well at our library and I know this one will be no different.
We will consider adding this title to our Adult Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
