This is a really cute book with beautiful illustrations. I loved all the lessons throughout the book, but especially Quinn deciding she could be her own hero.
This is a beautifully illustrated book about heroes, whether famous or not. The kids are given an assignment to dress up as a hero from past or present. Some children chose to be grand historical figures, some were people in their lives and others were themselves. It opens up to great discussion as to what makes a person a hero.
With wonderful illustrations and easy to understand text, “Be Your Own Hero” contains a lovely story that teaches or reminds kids to:
*Be kind, even when others are not.
*Never give up, no matter how hard things might get.
*Believe in yourself, even when others don’t.
*Do the right thing, even when it’s tough.
*Never be afraid of failing, because failure teaches us lessons and leads to success.
The message of this book tells kids that while a lot of heroes are famous, “heroes can be ordinary people who have discovered ways to make the world a better place,” and “inside every one of you is a hero waiting to happen.”
There are also some great discussion questions in the back of this book for parents and/or educators.
“Be Your Own Hero” is a very inspirational book that I recommend for all kids of all ages!
The illustrations were just ok so I felt the book needed to be really well written to compensate for that.
This story is from Quinn's perspective. They are spending the week looking at their heroes. She has trouble deciding who she wants to choose. The story kind of centers around Mr Finley and his choices change each day.
The book has a powerful message, it is about always doing the right thing. I just felt it was delivered rather drily and I didn't feel inspired in the least.
Totally was not a fan of the lingo or the a way it was presented.
It was just OK for. I probably wouldn't buy a copy for my kids and I think, while the concept was well planned, it didn't execute the way it could have. It was an easily forgettable book.
Great lessons for kids on finding their inner hero.
It illustrated real examples of historic heros and important lesson they bestowed. There were reminders for kids to believe in themselves and stand up for what is right. It encouraged them to be persistent and not give up on their dreams even when others discourage them. The illustrations were fantastic and captivating. The pages were filled with detail but not in an overwhelming way. The book had such a positive encouraging message for children. The end also gave some nice discussion points to stimulate further conversations. The photo collage of students with their listed hero also could spur further research into those stories. I think this is a great book for elementary school kids!
I love the idea of teaching kids to be their own hero. When kids don’t think they have the means to be like the famous hero’s, they have trouble imagining themselves as a hero. This book shows how they can be their own hero and was cute. I enjoyed the illustrations and the diversity of characters.
Loved this! It teaches about the important people who made our history, while still saying that they were normal human being.
I liked this story - it was well told and had some great images
The questions in the story was great and I loved how they got them thinking - who, and what is a hero
Mr Finley sounds like a great teacher and I loved what he taught the children through the book
It is 5 stars from me for this one - a great read for children - very highly recommended!
Wow such an amazing book.It teaches children the real meaning of being a hero .These type of books should be part of school courses. These are the teachings which are important in today's world .I absolutely loved the teacher in this book.
The artwork in this book is so beautifully done and I strongly support the message being sent. I absolutely love the last two pages with the pictures of all the kids dressed as their favourite heroes, then the next showing the adults they grew up to be.
What an inspiring book! I love the look back in history at all the heroes in the past, and then also highlighting the importance of the everyday heroes in our lives - like parents and teachers. And I love that at the end she finds the hero in herself. What an encouraging and hopeful message for children to hear! The quotes from each day in class really drive home this point. I definitely recommend this book. It would be a great conversation starter with your children.
