The book starts with background on willpower and how to build the habit for yourself, and rhen asks you to set goals and choose the strategies from the TOC that are most appealing to you. The beginning three chapters are straightforward and have some spots that function like a workbook.
The bulk of the book is the 75 strategies, each described on a couple of pages with "Why It Works" background info and "How To Do It" easily actionable steps.
Overall this is a good guide for someone struggling with willpower or achieving goals. In the 75 strategies, there are a lot of different options to explore.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
I know WHY the author is all “yay for you for even picking up this book” but that doesn’t make it less annoying.
What I did like about the book was that each of the 75 techniques given had an explanation of why it works and step by step instructions on how to implement it. No two people need to make the same 75 changes to their mindset, but this book definitely gives you a way to choose which ones will be most effective for you. Making life changes is hard but books like this help you find ways to ease the burden and lessen the load.
I've read a lot of self-help books over the years and especially in my profession as a social worker and now an editor. Some books are okay, some repeat the same old techniques, and I find myself skimming the content, and some really hit home and become a must-have reference on my bookshelf.
How to Win with Willpower by Aliya Levinson really hit the mark. This book includes 75 different tips for building willpower habits. The author's writing style is engaging and heartfelt. She describes the importance of willpower, where it comes from, and how to increase it with various strategies. She offers thought-provoking exercises and questions, and I found myself answering each prompt or exercise in depth. The information is quite positive and didn't make me feel less than or shamed.
A reader can skip around and review and practice different strategies. I initially picked up this book because of the picture and the world willpower and wanted to learn how to curb my emotional eating. However, this book has so many practical and useful tips and information for all sorts of life situations.
A great book and resource and I hope this author will write more.
