Another alternating POV from John Marrs, telling the dysfunctional story of Maggie and her daughter Nina.
It was a MASSIVE page turner and impossible to put down. A truly dark story with an underlying tension and malevolence running through the book. In places, perhaps a little too dark for me (could use a massage and a hug now!).
I've read a few JM books recently (The One, Passengers) and am perhaps feeling a little weary towards his writing style. I think i may have scored this higher with a little more distance between these. Also, I found some of the "twists" quite predictable.
That said, it's still a completely absorbing read that had me on edge throughout.
John Marrs has done it again! I have been obsessed since The One and always look forward to a new JM book. I really had no idea what was happening until the end; the plot moved quick and kept me interested and guessing throughout.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
this was a dark and compelling thriller that focused on a truly disturbing mother-daughter relationship. this book started off a bit slow for me because neither of the characters were particularly likable and i was unable to sympathize with their actions, many of which just seemed so implausible. i also struggled with the use of mental illness as a plot device. however, the writing was excellent and the dual timeline aspect was very well done. i also appreciated the author’s ability to write chapters that were short but suspenseful and i liked that almost all of them ended with a new plot twist. overall, i enjoyed the fast pace and i'm excited to read more by john marrs in the future! thank you to amazon publishing uk and netgalley for the e-arc. ♡
Absolutely fantastic read. Read in one sitting. John Marrs is one of my automatic pre order authors, no blurb required to click that purchase button
I am a fan of John Marrs’ books ever since I read ‘The One’ last year. Since then, I have devoured everything he has written and I am yet to be disappointed. He’s an author that I can always rely on to come up with something unique, disturbing, immersive and twisty.
What Lies Between Us is a dark, captivating, twisty thriller. The story is narrated in two timelines. In the present timeline, Nina is holding her mother, Maggie captive. Its such a bizarre situation that had me scratching my head and try to pick up my jaw from the floor a couple of times. Why on earth would anyone imprison and torture their mother? I had so many questions. The second timeline was set in the past. It explained the events that led to the imprisonment of Maggie by her daughter.
This was one twisty ride that had me changing my mind about events and characters a couple of times. The chapters were short and each ended with a cliffhanger. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
Its hard to review this book without giving away the story so I’ll keep this brief. If you enjoy twisty, enthralling page-turners then this is definitely a book that you need to pick up. John Marrs never ceases to surprise me. Once again, he has written a story that surprised me. It will definitely stay with me.
I wrote a complete spoiler free review of this amazing book on my blog, www.acourtofbooksandbrews.com and completely forgot to update it over here.
But John Marrs does not disappoint ever! Every book he writes get better and better. This book was crazy and insane! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Every one needs to read this book!
What Lies Between Us is so twisted! Which I think is the big key word that I took from this story. I would say that it really is best going into this book knowing as little as possible. Unfortunately I saw spoilers that took the edge off for me. However I still loved the fact that even after knowing one thing about the plot I was still kept on my toes throughout when it came to the rest of the story. The way the plot unravels really makes this book all the more addictive. The characters themselves create a big mystery. One that just deepened and kept on managing to shock me with every new twist that I encountered. What I will say is that these two women are definitely full of surprises.
The plot of What Lies Between Us is pretty fast moving. It managed to maintain a claustrophobic atmosphere as I was kept in the dark until valuable snippets were revealed. This in turn reveals more of the truth but also had the tendency to bring forth new questions too. This story is built on a foundation of secrets and lies that at times easily caught me off guard. The characters themselves especially had this effect on me!
What Lies Between Us is a tension filled rollercoaster ride of a story and John Marrs easily managed to keep me on edge until the intense conclusion.
It’s strange when you read a book that everyone else seems to love, but you don’t. That’s what happened to me last week when I finished reading 'What Lies Between Us' by John Marrs. I’ve read two previous books by this author and enjoyed both, especially 'The Passengers' which I thought was a fantastic book. When I got the opportunity to read his latest release via NetGalley, I was excited to see where he'd take me next.
However, this book didn’t do it for me. It involves the relationship between a mother and a daughter. Their relationship has become toxic for reasons I won’t share so I don’t spoil it for you. Other than to say things are so bad that the daughter is keeping the mother captive in the house they share. I felt this story could have been captured in a novella and perhaps even a short story. It went on and on, and I found it hard to pick up and keep going. It started well, and the end also had more pace, but there was a big middle chunk that left me cold and disinterested. I'm sorry to say that I didn’t care what happened to either of the main characters. I even guessed most of the twists before they occurred, so when these were revealed, they didn’t make me gasp in awe and the end actually had me rolling my eyes!
But you know we can’t all like the same things and as I said others absolutely loved this book and there are glowing five-star reviews everywhere. So, I’ll leave it up to you to decide if this one is for you.
I do have other books by John Marrs on my kindle, and I’d read another based on the other books I've enjoyed. However, in my opinion, head to 'The Passengers' or 'The One' before this. Both were real page-turners and had me awake into the night to try and read just one more chapter. Perhaps I am more suited to this author’s dystopian style fiction.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and John Marrs who provided me with an early copy of this in return for an honest review.
After reading The One by John Marrs, I knew I'd be in for somewhat of a ride with What Lies Between Us. I did not anticipate how wild of a ride I would be taken on! The plot in this book was sick, twisted, addicting, scary, odd, couldn't put it down and off-the-chain, but completely brilliant at the same time. Maggie and Nina are mother and daughter. We are taken on a journey through 25 to 30 years of the ups and downs of their twisted, needy, and possessive relationship. Nina hates Maggie with a passion for "ruining" her life, and is persistently punishing Maggie for doing so. Maggie is trying to survive her daughter's mad control, both physically and mentally of her, but it turns out that Maggie has some pretty sick secrets of her own. I have read a lot of books with a lot of dark characters, but Nina has to be one of the darkest I have ever read about. I give this book 4-4.5 stars. I like dark reads, so I was able to give it a high rating, but if you don't like dark books, you may want to stay away from this one. But, I really liked it. John Marrs - he is one brilliant, kick-ass writer.
I'd like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for my copy of the book. It was my pleasure to prov
3.5 stars. This one started off really good and right from the beginning I was thinking, “OMG this book is crazy!”. It was one of those books that was so disturbing that even though I was thinking things like ”What in the world is going on” and “Did I really just read that?”, I just couldn’t put it down!! Nina and Maggie were both completely twisted. I went back and forth wondering which of the two was crazier. The reason it dropped in stars for me is because it started to get really predictable about 3/4 of the way through. I felt like it was just a little TOO much crazy for me. LOL. There was something in the end that shocked me, that I didn’t see coming but it still wasn’t enough for me to end up loving it. I do enjoy John Marrs writing and I would still recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a thriller that deals with a dysfunctional family and completely insane characters.

I totally loved this book. It's my first novel by John Marrs but I know it will not be my last.
This is the twisted tale of the relationship of Nina and Maggie, a mother and daughter who have totally dysfunctional relationship based on lies, half truths and a battle as to who is right. The power play between these two women keeps you engrossed and at each chapter more and more is revealed. The characters are all believable, but unlikable. This does not distract from the story or the outcome.
A must read ☺
First time John Marrs reader! I had heard so much about his books so I went into this feeling pretty excited. The book grabbed me from the start and I pretty much finished it in 2 days. It was really uncomfortable and horrifying.
The story is told in the present and the past, dropping little nuggets as to how the current situation takes place. What you think you know is true may be a matter of perception.
It was twisty and full of surprises. My only real complaint is that the ending wasn’t as thorough as I could have been, with the ending not as chilling or, alternatively, satisfying as I like in thrillers. It was almost a “wait...what?” moment that possibly should have been expounded on a little more. It doesn’t leave the reader confused, but more that it had more to travel, if that makes sense.

This was TWISTED! This was MENTAL! This was MENTALLY TWISTED!
Over 400 books later I pretty much am sure I have read books describing various mother/daughter relationships but nothing as crazy as the mother/daughter relationship Maggie and Nina share!! It was dark, ugly and INSANE!!
Looking forward to seeing this being played out on screen. It will be such twisted fun to watch!
My many, many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Amazon Publishing UK and the author John Marrs for giving me an e-Arc of the book to read! I honestly did not expect to get my request accepted and was delighted when it did!!
This was a creepy, fast paced psychological thriller. Quiet librarian Nina keeps her mother chained and locked up in the family home. But why? John Marrs drip feeds the clues until a final terrifying denouement. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. Five stars.
I've always said that there is one place that my family should be.....
So of course a book with a totally dysfunctional family made me feel right at home.
The thing is this family takes it to a whole new game.
Maggie is locked away in the attic. Chained to the floor. Her daughter Nina goes about life like nothing is amiss.
Why? That's the whole storyline...you are going to have to buckle up and read it to find out why this family has ended up like this.
Warning: Be prepared for lots of this.

#WhatLiesBetweenUs #NetGalley Oh my word! This book had me riveted ! So full of twists and turns and had me alternating between which woman (Nina or Maggie) that I despised most and which had my sympathy. Such a fresh topic for a thriller, I really couldn't put it down and will definitely look our for more books by this author. A superb 5 stars!
Lies, betrayal, love, disrespect, pain, disappointment, hate, fear, sadness, control and selfishness are all buried in the pages of yet another fantastic book by John Marrs.
They say there are only 7 or so plotlines and any book written is based on these. When I read a John Marrs book I tend to believe otherwise. He always seems to come up with something original in my mind.
Definitely recommended. Thank you.
This book was really wild. I flew through it, trying to figure out what was going on. Really fun ride. John Marrs is becoming one of my favorites.
Wow, wow, I have just finished this book moments ago and what started off to a slow-burning read it quickly went on to pick-up speed like a rollercoaster full of loops twist and turns, and once it stops you want to do it all again.
I am speechless and never thought I would read it all tonight but once I got to the Facebook bit I read the rest in one sitting.
I have no idea what book I shall read next that will ever top this ... I will be haunted and thinking of this book for a long time. My only regret is not being able to give this book the starts it deserves
Oh my goodness I really don’t know what to say other than John Marrs has absolutely done it again !!!!
Nina and her mother Maggie live together but it everything is as it seems. As Maggie cannot leave the house she shares with her daughter, a chain around her ankle makes sure of that !! What has happened over the years for this to be their new normal lives ?
Over the chapters we find out what the relationship between mother and daughter used to be like and what it is like now. The horrifying truth about past events that have led to a mother being held captive by her only daughter.
This is one truly shocking book, with plenty of twists and turns. A shocking opening, a shocking middle and a shocking end add up to one truly shocking and disturbing book BUT it is one that will have you addicted from start to finish. This is definitely a must read and will no doubt have everyone talking about Maggie and Nina !!
Thank you to Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
