Most of this book centers around a house. The house is where Nina spent her childhood with her parents. Fast forward, she is in her mid thirties, and still living there with her mother. The pair has each suffered loses when Nina was just a teenager.

In her adult life, she starts to find more details about her childhood. What she discovers leads her to find revenge against her mother… by locking her up in their attic.

I enjoyed this book!

I had high expectations for this book as I’d read John Marrs books before and I wasn’t disappointed. With John writing he almost plays with your mind and this one was no different and that what I liked about it. It’s a psychological thriller that gets you think throughout. Which I love in a book. It wasn’t a straightforward book

😱 What on earth did I just read!! I’ve only read The One, by John Marrs and I was definitely expecting some sci-fi. This book was every kind of mess up. Nina is extremely crazy and poor Maggie. I feel so sorry for her. Be ready, because once you start, you want be putting this one down.

I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Well that was dark as heck. I’m not even sure how to rate it right now.

I’m a big fan of Marrs but this was my first psychological suspense of his. I loved The One, Passengers and Minders which are all speculative/sci fi thrillers.

While there are quite a few twists and turns, I didn’t find any of them particularly shocking but for maybe one or two. My stomach definitely felt queasy at times though. This is certainly not for sensitive readers.

Marrs is definitely a crafty storyteller.

Triggers galore.

Excuse me while I go read a holiday romance to cleanse my heart and soul.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another disturbingly addictive read from John Marrs!
The characters were so complex, and unpredictable, I had no idea what was going to happen one page to the next. I did feel like I wanted a little more when I finished, but it's overall a very intriguingly addictive read!
Still have more to read from this author! Can't wait!

4.5 stars - All I can say is wow, wow, wow. This is my favorite book by John Marrs yet! It is so completely messed up and had me devouring every single page. I loved getting the different perspectives and alternating timelines. I ended up reading the last 60% of the book today instead of doing homework. Priorities!
Highly recommend!!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the copy.

This was dark, twisted and cleverly written
This book takes you on a ride.
My only criticism was that there was a couple of plot holes.
I loved the ending. I felt it was perfect.

I am left stunned by this book. This was the first book I had read by this author and I have to say, what a brilliant book it was.

This is an interesting tale of two women with love and loathing for each other as one is incarcerated in her own home and the other is her jailer.

Such an easy to read book that I would recommend anyone to read and I will definitely be looking at the authors other novels.

Dark and uncomfortable at times but this book is so compelling at the same time. Couldn't put it down even if I wanted to. my only gripe was that some of the twists were on the predictable side and didn't blow me away.

Maggie spends her time locked in the attic. Nina is her captor and believes she has the right to keep Maggie from leaving the house. But NIna does not know everything and the reader finds the truth out through the book. This story is full of twists, turns and secrets.
I enjoyed this book from John Marrs, he never disappoints.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for granting me an advance copy of this book

WOW... what a book!
I was hooked within the first couple of chapters! It's opened my mind to how amazing/terrifying the brain can be.
Slowly watching child to adult Nina and wondering what on earth happened to make her the way she is.
I was so heartbroken by the Epilogue but felt relief also.
I would totally recommend this to everyone, I'm so glad I read it!

Great story of a totally weird family - wish I hadn't taken so long to read this. My first book by this author and definitely not my last.

I loved this book! Really fast-paced thriller with many twists and turns just how I like it. I would recommend if you like and read thrillers often as it will definitely surprise.
I also really liked the writing which sometimes can get overlooked when reading thrillers.
Thanks for the advanced copy!

John Marrs is proving himself to be one multitalented author the kind you never quite know what to expect from and this was no exception. The shock factor was high and so was my attention, great thriller.

Oy, let me start by saying John Marrs can definitely write a novel that makes the pages fly by. The Passengers remains one of my favorite suspense books so know that it pains me to give this one 3 stars. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed by the twists especially when each one was announced before the big reveal of who did what. For me I don't want to know everything thing that is coming. I like the element of surprise. I'm the outlier here so if this book sounds appealing give it a try for yourself, many others loved it.

What Lies Between Us was my first John Marrs book, but it certainly won't be my last! Dark, disturbing, creepy, emotional and thought provoking - brilliant, just brilliant! I loved every minute of it!

Huge John Marrs fan and have been making my way through his books. Picked this up with every intention of splitting it over the month for a group read and discussion… That did not happen. I devoured 250 pages in one night then finished it the next morning. Oops. Hooked. Page turner.

I don’t know what I expected going into this but what I read shocked me, was unexpected and dark. I bloody loved it. Every page. The story is told through mother Maggie and daughter Nina and they are both as bad as each other. I kept swaying from one to the other who I hated more but then it levelled out and I didn’t like either of them. Brilliant story though. Highly recommend.

This has also already gone into my top reads of year. Another one that’s hard to forget. Disturbing. Dark. Deadly. Psychos. A well deserved five stars from me. Another must read.

Another winning thriller from John Marrs!! 5 stars

I read The Good Samaritan by John Marrs a couple of years ago. This book gave me the same crazy intense feels, I legit felt my stomach dropping so many times while reading this. It was dark, twisted and messed up and I was HERE. FOR. IT.

John Marrs is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read more of his books. I'm absolutely enthralled with both his writing style, his insane twists and his ability to shock me.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! If you enjoy domestic thrillers, this is an absolute must read. The twists alone make it worth it.
