Edgy, dark, twisted and sinister. This book will leave you wanting to know more as you read through the shocking chapters. Alternating between POV's of mother (Maggie) and daughter (Nina) you slowly get the pieces to the puzzle that will complete the full picture of what is happening and why.
Nina and Maggie have a strained relationship, to say the very least. Nina is often cruel to her mother, but why would she treat her with such venom? Why did she lash out as a teen, causing so much trouble and mayhem. and why did her doting father, who loved his daughter with all of his heart suddenly up and disappear without saying goodbye to her, leaving Nina heartbroken and with so many questions?
What you learn as you read along in this book with SHOCK YOU and ROCK YOU to your very core. Strap yourself in my friends, as you are about to embark on a very dark, and thrilling ride!
Well. How to write a review without spoilers? Almost impossible. John Marrs has done it again! Two women share a house, but both have secrets that they are desperate to keep. The storyline oscillates between love, hate, control and care. But will there be a positive resolution? You will have to read the book to find out.
A brilliantly woven plot, impossible to put down!
Wow!!! This book had so many twists and turns, I never knew what was going to happen or who to believe. This is a Great book!!!
Thank you John Marrs, Netgalley UK, and Amazon UK for the digital arc in exchange for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 twisty turn stars!
I’ve read all the authors books and am openly biased because I LOVE them all.
While this isn’t a 5 star one (was a teeny tiny slow to get going) it is brilliant overall.
Despicable characters, WTF moments, twists, and a very dark tale.
The man is a genius.
Another BRILLIANT book by John Marrs, which does not surprise me. This one is the tale of two women who live together in a big old house, but one keeps the other chained and will never let her out of the house again.
This was unputdownable like all novels by Marrs, and I am continually impressed with the new ways he shocks me and leaves me in suspense. Highly recommended!
Thank you to John Marrs, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for an ARC.
The story gripped me from the Prologue. How can two people get to feel like that about each other?? John Marrs has a way in catching hold of their reader, right from the beginning and not letting go until the last page. I felt the story held a good pace, being told from alternating POVs, and different timelines, giving us a sense how our protagonists came to be where they are today. With the number of characters in the book, you may feel that it is predictable - but it's not, perhaps presumable - and you may still be wrong! You wonder how two people can get to this amount of conflict - and the journey to finding out why leaves you speechless. Fantastic read! 5 Stars! Can't wait for more from this author!!
I was given an early review copy for an honest review.
This is an exceptional read, kept me wanting more and I was unable to put it down! Just when you think you can see what’s going on from all the tantalising hints, it take you another direction at whiplash speed! Love how Mr Marrs paints the picture on our minds blank canvas, it was like watching a movie play out in my head. Toxic relationships abound in a lot of books, but this takes it way beyond, at the end of the day mother knows best and all that... this book will hold you captive in more ways than one!
What a dark and intense tale of two women ! Sir, you have done it again.
Marrs' story-telling capabilities are out of this world. Due to the fact, I was not surprised that I ended up enjoying this book.
It is told in multiple timelines and POV; altering from Mother, Maggie and Daughter, Nina. In my opinion, the characters are unlikeable but I managed. Also, the story unravels in MANY satisfying twists in a rapid yet relaxed pace. The author took his sweet time revealing them so nothing seemed rushed. If you love terrifying and gut-wrenching plots, What Lies Between Us is not to be missed.
This book comes out May 15th. Kudos, John Marrs.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eArc in exchange for an honest review.
One of my favourite books so far this year! It was fantastic from the first few lines in. The storyline drew me in immediately, and although I thought I had it figured out early on, I was completely wrong. Brilliantly written, with a totally believable plot.
4.25 Stars
Woah! Talk about Nuts.. or rather Dysfunction!! And I mean Family Dysfunction!
John Marrs knows how to grab the reader’s attention:
A mother and daughter, whose relationship is well... absolutely Bonkers! That’s a nice way of saying it, if I’m being completely honest. It’s so dysfunctional that you can’t tear your eye’s away.
A myriad of thoughts went through my head while reading “What Lies Between Us” by John Marrs and I desperately want to spill all, yet that would spoil the surprise. I will say that I read this and felt, shock, awe and disgust and yet, I kept reading. This is dark, demented and so twisted that it’s utterly fantastic.
For those of you that are looking to be entertained for a few hours, this is a must read.
This was another fabulous buddy read with Kaceey! SO glad we read this one together.
Thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and John Marrs for the arc.
Published on NetGalley and Goodreads on 2.29.20.
This is the first book that I have read by John Marrs, and I now understand all of the hype around this author.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The tension starts building immediately, and it’s impossible to not to wonder what in the world is going on. It was truly captivating until the very last page. I couldn’t help but want more after I finished it.
“I have stopped loving you. I have stopped caring about you. I have stopped worrying about you. I have simply...stopped. You are the person I share this house with, nothing more, nothing less. You mean no more to me than the shutters that hide what goes on in here, the floorboards I walk over or the doors we use to separate us.”
This book releases on May 15th, so go ahead and mark your calendars now. This is a thriller that you don’t want to pass up this year!
Thank you @NetGalley and @AmazonPublishing for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
3,5 stars
It was of the most disturbing books I've read in last few years. An idea of bringing together two women who hate each other and making them so depentable on each other brought in the book an atmosphere of horror and dread. I was hooked from the first pages and I think that it was also due to author ability to engage a reader with great prose.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the book, however, not really unpredictable. I could assume what will happen, could guess motives and event that were in our protagonists pasts because there were a lot of clues.
What I couldn't stand were both main characters who, in my opinion, were totally despicable and unreedemable. And I am all for an evil protagonist or people from grey area but still I like to have someone to root for. I know that it was intentional, because all the book is about what made the relationship between mother and daughter so twisted and who is the real villain of the story, but still. They hurt each other so much and instead searching for help, they tried to cover all of it and deal with it by themselves.
Anyway, I liked the book. It was my first novel by this author but I heard good things about him and I wasn't disappointed.
John Marrs is hands down one of my favourite thriller authors and I've loved every one of his books that I've read so far and this one was no different.
All you really need to know is that the story revolves around Nina and Maggie, two women that share a house together, only one of them happens to reside in the attic and is kept there by a padlocked chain...
That's all I can say without giving away major spoilers so basically go and read it yourself to find out what a compelling book this. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.
Wow ! What an absolute brilliant read this was. John Marrs has done it again and written a book that I for one didn’t want to finish as it is so so good. This is a twisted and suspenseful psychological thriller that had me at times gobsmacked reading it. A massive five ⭐️ read for me
Brilliant. Fantastic characters, lots of twists and turns. Exactly how a thriller should be. An unputdownable read as you NEED to know how it will all end.
(If I could give it more than 5 stars I would)
Definitely recommending it to all thriller's aficionados
The essence of the novel is the relationship between two women, Nina and Maggie, who are living in the same house, and how they both hate each other, or so it seems.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat since the beginning. and the writing is so genius, I've even started seeing the characters in my dreams.
The story is twisted (but in the right amount to my liking), and the plot certainly won't give it to you easily because you need to go through the whole book to have the truth! Really hard to put down! Every time I would reach a new chapter, I was making a new theory about what the ending would be.
I'm definitely adding John Marrs as one of my favorite authors.
I'm thankful to netgalley, the publishers and the author for the advanced copy, to read and give an honest review
3.5 Stars
wow, that was fucked up ! in a good way.
I definitely saw some of the twists coming but the ending was something else.
The book's strongest part is how you're never sure about the two main characters.
Who's really the bad guy? Why did they do what they did? Who's really the crazy one ?
Definitely recommend!
Fantastic toatally loved it diddnt see all the twists and turns just when I thought I had worked it out it changed again I loved all the secreat sand the Unknown and thee ding was perfectly fitting
As soon as I heard about this book I knew I had to read it as soon as I could! John Marrs is a fantastic author and never fails to blow me away with his innovative ideas and thoroughly immersive style of writing. I feel I cannot say too much about this book without giving it away, but as Marrs expertly switches narrative between mother and daughter we find out why Nina is holding her mother hostage in the attic of their house. Absolutely fantastic!
This is a cleverly crafted novel that keeps you guessing and turning the pages. The characters are drawn so perceptively, and the tension-dripping dialogue takes you inside the book. What is going on here? It stretches one’s natural judgment and interpretation of what is really happening to the limit. Your compassion shifts backwards and forwards between the characters until you are dizzy. It’s about a mother and daughter, one of whom is bent on revenge. One incident was the match that lit the bonfire to trigger a sequence of horrific, sordid events. Maggie, the mother, is forced to make some blistering decisions to protect her daughter. Many of them backfire out of all proportion. For the life of me, I can’t imagine what I would have done in Maggie’s situation. How she maintained her sanity beggars belief. Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK.
