Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. This book got my attention after being reviewed by some booktubers I follow, I was excited to receive this ARC and see what all the hype was about. It did not disappoint! I was captivated from the first chapter. Now I see why it was getting so much attention on Booktube. It was such a great read. So twisty and suspenseful and just when you think there cannot be another twist coming you get slammed with another one. It was one of those books I couldn't put down and when I finished it I was left thinking wtf did I just read?! In the best of ways of course! Such a deliciously dark read. #johnmarrs #whatliesbetweenus #netgalley #tea_sipping_bookworm #bookstagram #goodreads #amazon#kindle #bookqueen #lits

Well that was interesting...and completely screwy in a good or bad way depending on if this is your type of thriller. The subject matter is dark so definitely do your homework before jumping in to avoid triggers. There were some predictable “surprises” along with some good twists and if you like unreliable narrators, this one is for you. I thought overall it was good and I will try to read more by John Marrs.

Thank you to Net Galley and Amazon Publishing UK for the ARC.

John Marrs had easily become one of my favorite authors. This book kept me guessing and had so many deceptive twists. Can't wait to see what he writes next!

Thank you Amazon Publishing/Thomas & Mercer for the free Netgalley copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

John Marrs never disappoints when I’m in the mood for a fast paced, edge of your seat, binge worthy thriller! This is the third book of his that I’ve read and they’ve all been 4-5 stars for me. I’ve also read The One and The Passengers.

I’m pretty pumped that he still has a decent sized backlist of titles that I’ve yet to read. I just downloaded When You Disappeared since it was available for prime reading.

I loved this book right from the start. At first it’s hard to determine what exactly is going on with the two main characters, but the relationship between the two women quickly takes a sinister turn.

This book has everything I love: multiple narrators, unreliable narrators, multiple timelines, unhinged individuals, rebellious teens, shocking reveals, and my favorite not-so-perfect ending.

I imagine some readers may hate the way this book ended, but it actually brought my rating back up after it started to slip a bit towards the end for me. The only reason it started to slip at all was because I found one twist to be a bit too predictable, but it was only one of many more that I didn’t expect so I’m probably being too critical in saying that. Either way, the ending was a completely unexpected, jaw dropping slap in the face and I loved it! Literally couldn’t read it fast enough.

What Lies Between Us by John Marrs is, dark, twisted, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Some of the plot points were creepy and may disturb some people. When I read the synopsis, I thought of the old movie, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" but this was even creepier. If you love psychological thrillers and have not read this book, then I definitely recommend you remedy that situation immediately.

I do not want to give away any of the story except to tell you that Nina is keeping her mother a prisoner in her home, chained in the attic. It takes a long time to figure out exactly what her reasons are. John Marrs doles out tidbits throughout the story that will have you racing through this one to find out what is happening. It takes a while to figure out who is telling the truth and if either of these characters are reliable. Maggie has sacrificed everything for her daughter Nina. Nina has no idea how much her mother has done for her, because Maggie can never tell her why she did what she did.

This was definitely a toxic and dysfunctional mother and daughter relationship. Is there more to the story than what is shared by both Nina and Maggie? The story is told in the voices of both mother and daughter here in the present time and from the past. We hear what happened 25 years earlier and then what is going on in the present. As I mentioned earlier, it is not told in one fell swoop, it unfolds throughout the story, which had me quickly turning the pages to find out what the full, twisted story really was. This is my first book by John Marrs and if all his books are told in the same way, I will be reading them over the next few months. All I can say is that ending was so unexpected, and I was holding my breath during the last few pages.

Ooooh Marrs has done it again! What a brilliant book! Not sure what to say about this book as it was crazy! It was so entertaining. I won’t discuss the plot because it’s difficult to without giving it away.

This book has to be one of the wildest rides I've read in a long time. It's so messed up and dysfunctional, that it left me breathless and unsure about how I felt because of how much I had been left reeling.

I have loved John's books ever since I first read The One and this book is just as good as any of the other ones

What Lies Between Us is the first book that I have read by John Marrs. A story of deception, betrayal, and revenge that captures reader's attention from beginning to end. By the end, you'll be thinking what the hell did I just read - in a good way! A definite recommend for psychological thriller lovers. I look forward to reading more from John Marrs.

Ok, let me start this post by saying I am setting this book aside, i.e. I am not completing this book now and probably will not pick this up again. That's not to say this isn't a good book it's simply not the one for me.

For starters, this book is too messed up for me. It's a story of a mom and her daughter and their highly dysfunctional, toxic relationship. At about 30% of the book, I expected some semblance of a plot, some direction but all I got was a sense of foreboding and of things getting worse than ever. I must agree that must have been the intention of the author. Giving an eerie, foreboding feeling.
I am not sure if the story was thrilling but it was traumatic and disturbing. There's no overt violence per se but there's abuse, so be aware of that going in.

I am squeamish when it comes to abuse, even emotional, psychological, or implied abuse. I don't like reading about sufferings, traumas, etc. Real life has enough examples of that all around us, I don't need a book to feed me the same thing. I like thrillers, suspense where some redemption happens.

I did read a book like Monday's not coming which had far more abuse, trauma, etc in the story and yet not only did I finish it I also liked it. Maybe because the age of the protagonists gave them some leeway, mistakes made at a certain age/mental state can probably be explained away saying they did such and such things due to their ignorance but when adults commit willful crimes and there's no redemption or even repentance it's just twisted and scares me, hits too close to reality to be ignored.

Still, I cannot leave a book halfway without knowing the end so I read the last few chapters to know the ending and that reaffirmed what I suspected all along, that, this book isn't for me.

I have read The One by the same author and I loved it. I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I expected to love this book as much too but unfortunately, it didn't work out.
Will I pick up another book from this Author though? absolutely yes.

Will I recommend this book? I am not sure what kind of recommendation I can give, seeing that I abandoned it midway but if you are not squeamish or are not a wimp like me and If you don't mind stories of dysfunctional, troubled families then do go for it. John Marrs's writing is as digestible and as fast-paced and easy as ever to consume.

This is my second John Murrs read and it did not disappoint. What Lies Between Us is another jam packed story plot that had me intrigued, guessing and wanting more.

Nina and Maggie sure do have a lot of skeletons in their closet but it’s is the mystery, lies and memory around these skeletons that makes for an interesting plot.

Thx to Netgalley, the publishers and John Marrs. This is one of the books that I was looking forward to reading. I have always been a John Marrs fan. I don’t know why I waited so long to read this ! The best thriller suspense I’ve read this year ! No spoilers, you have to read this to see how great it truly is. What can I say, definitely a five star.

What a dark book this is! Second book I've read by John Marrs and they have both been riveting.

Nina and Maggie, mother and daughter, live together in their family home, however Maggie is chained up in the attack and is desperate to escape. A creepy story that touches on mental health, full of lies and deceit. Absolutely brilliant!

Unfortunately this one was a DNF for me. I tried to go back and read it after I read other books, but it never drew me in.

Maybe I will try again at a future date.

What Lies Between Us is a twisty, fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is told in two different POVs, Nina and her mother Maggie in the present time as well as 25 years ago. We get differing stories as to why these women have a strained relationship (to say the least) and it's hard to know who is telling the truth or who to sympathize with. I can't reveal too much more about the plot at the risk of spoiling it. The writing really builds tension and the twists leave you wanting to read well into the night. Of course, as with most novels in the thriller genre, some suspension of belief is required. If you're looking for a thriller that will keep you hooked from page one, this is it!

My appreciation to Amazon Publishing UK, author John Marrs, and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is a book that almost defies reviewing. There are so many twists and turns. It's honestly mind-blowing - leaving readers wondering who to trust. Just read it!

Many thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Such a brilliant book! I’ll admit, the beginning really had me scratching my head. I couldn’t figure out what was going on, and who the villain really was. But as I was drawn deeper and deeper into the story, a very unexpected tale emerged! I strongly recommend you go into this book with no spoilers. What a mind boggling, twisty tale!!

Another totally bonkers, far fetched, highly entertaining read from John Marrs, don't think I've read anything this twisty for ages, a tasty bit of literary fast food, 4 stars. Thanks Netgalley and the publishers for the advance copy.

Oh my lord this book was CRAZY in the best way!!

Nina and her mother Maggie live in the house she grew up in but there is something wrong, she is chained up in a bedroom upstairs. Maggie is just trying to protect her daughter but Nina thinks her mother has done something absolutely terrible and she is making her pay for it.

there was some crazy twists and turns, it goes back and fourth between timelines and characters but it was one of my favorite reads this year!

Thankyou netgally and publishers for sending me an early release of this book :D

Holy moly what a book! This book had my attention right from page 1 and literally kept me engaged the entire way through. The story follows mother and daughter (Maggie and Nina) and their tumultuous relationship. You love to hate and hate to love both of them and struggle with who to trust. I love how it all unfolds! Highly recommend grabbing this one ASAP
