What an incredible and fast read! Highly recommend this to all thriller suspense lovers. John Marrs is an incredible writer. I have his other books but haven't read them yet but after this book I am a huge fan and can't wait to read his other work!!
John Marrs never ever disappoints. One of my favourite authors. Great characters, storyline and twists. A very disturbing tale.

Wow!!! I really enjoyed this book! It had all the mystery and suspense! Boy, did it ever surprise me!!! The plot twists and turns were insane! I never expected how it turned out in the end.
This is my first book by John Marrs and definitely not my last. I would recommend this book!
"What Lies Between Us" is the first book I've read by John Marrs but it certainly won't be the last. Filled with intrigue, tension and downright cruelty it's a thrilling read with many plot twists and turns. My nerves are shattered!
4.5 stars would be what I would give this however for the sake of star ratings I will give it four as I don't think it's quite a five star, it was so close but some small issues stopped me from giving it five stars.
The story is told in alternative chapters between two women Nina and Maggie and takes places over a course of years in their lives from present day to the past. Maggie is being held against her will inside the house by Nina and the pair of them seem to have a strained relationship, is all what it seems and who is actually the unrealiable narrator of the two?
I typically enjoy stories like this and this was no acception, infact when I wasn't reading this I found myself thinking about the story and when I was reading it the writing was super fast paced and with short chapters and often little twists at the end of them, it left you wanting more.
The only thing that didn't seem believable to me and yes this is spoilers was that medication that was thirteen years old was being used to drug someone in the present day, I don't know if this is possible I'm sure medication has expiry dates and also the medication was supposed to have put Nina into early menopause which I'm sure side effects of a medication might be able to do but a nineteen year old going into menopause doctors would run tests then she would have found out she didn't have the disorder her mother claimed she had. So for those reasons I did take away half a star but everything else was great and I'm super excited to read more by this author.
John Marrs has become one of my favorite thriller authors in the past few years. There’s just something about his writing that keeps me on the edge of my seat. What I like most about his novels is that they are all different. I never know what I sign up for, it’s always a surprise.
What Lies Between Us intrigued me right from the very beginning. The short chapters, the dual POV, and the cryptic references all added to my curiosity. I couldn’t wait to find out more about Nina and Maggie and what happened between those two. Every chapter revealed a little something about their pasts and why they acted so strangely and hateful toward the other. John Marrs certainly knows how to build up tension.
I had lots of fun in coming up with possible scenarios and plot twists but most of my ideas didn’t come close to the actual ones in the story. I only guessed a few things.
The most fascinating thing was my sympathy as well as my antipathy toward the main characters. I’m not sure if that was Marrs’ intention but I alternated between these two feelings in the course of the story. In the beginning, I sympathized with Maggie and felt genuinely bad for her, while I couldn’t stand Nina. As more secrets were revealed, my sympathy shifted to Nina, while my antipathy was now directed to Maggie. These feelings changed again and again and again until I decided that both characters are simply bad people.
About halfway through the story, I started to feel slightly bored. The story became a little bit repetitive. Maggie and Nina were doing the same as they did in the beginning even though I was hoping for a bit of a bigger surprise by then.
Also, the things that happened to Nina and Maggie, as well as their actions against each other, were too much and partly over the top.
What Lies Between Us started our great but I lost interest about halfway through the story. Nevertheless, Marrs is a great author and know how to play not only his characters but also his readers.
Wow, wow, wow!
I love John Marrs and The Good Samaritan is one of my favourite books of all time. The Passengers and The One are also in my top books lists. I was so intrigued when I heard about this book and when it arrived I picked it up and didn't put it down until it was finished. It was so creepy, twisty and gripping.
If you like John Marrs, or psychological thrillers in general, you must read this immediately!
Yet another suspense filled thriller from the pen of John Marrs. I do wonder how twisted you need to be to come up with these ideas!
From the beginning it held me, drip feeding hints of what was to come. I don’t want to give anything away, just say what a brilliant book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading!
I won't go into the plot except to say the story starts our well but the reveals were underwhelming with a total mess of a plot that became more unbelievable as the story progressed. To name them would go into spoiler territory, but the choices made by the characters literally made no sense.
Also, apparently this town has no police department? When a character goes missing their family knows who is crazy pants yet there is no investigation???
Not for me, but I'm the outlier.
The first i noticed was the cover of the book, it's intriguing..
The book it's self is a clever and compulsive psychological thriller with a lot of twists and little crazy plot.. An insane mother/daughter relationship with strange happenings.
You don't know who you hate mostly.. and that's the magic of the book, because you will not guess the ending. You will think that you have everything figure out but you will be wrong, I'm pretty sure of that 😉
I have heard amazing things about John Marrs, but this was the first book I have read by him and it definitely won't be my last!

Holy Smokes! This book is crazy good and I just kept turning the pages to see how the story unfolded. Get ready for a crazy ride. There are alternating POVs between mother and daughter from the past and the present. I admit, sometimes I wanted to stay in the present to see what would happen next, but the backstory itself was unbelievably crazy. Maggie and Nina bring toxic mother-daughter relationships to a whole other level.
This is my third book by John Marrs and I will read all of his future books!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Thank you NetGalley for the review copy!
I hate to say it because I love John Marrs but...this was not good. It really felt like Marrs was trying to keep on his 1 book/year schedule and rushed this. The writing quality was just not as good as his usually is, the ending was just really rushed and horrible (everything resolved in about 3 pages), and the plot twists were so unrealistic. I still cannot figure out why Maggie kept that last, big secret to herself until the very end and there was such little explanation given for why Nina was so hate-filled--it definitely didn't seem like they were trying to paint her as a sociopath. I think there was an attempt to make both characters feel sympathetic despite their flaws but I hated both of them and thought they were both lunatics, honestly. I really wish I hadn't read it because I don't want it to taint all the other Marrs books I love! Skip this one and go directly to The Passengers or The One!!
What in the heck?! Twists upon twists upon twists! An insane mother/daughter relationship with all kinds of strange happenings. I'm not sure who I hate more until the entire story unfolds. Do NOT miss this one!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. Wow! John Marrs does it again with this twisted dark ride! Maggie is for sure devoted to her daughter on every level and at every step! Nina, well my dear you are one twisted as fudge psycho! I still can't fathom how her brain could switch between normal, crazy, and pure psycho.
I have heard absolutely amazing things about John Marrs, but this was the first book I have read by him and it definitely won't be my last!
This book is seriously twisted and crazy but addictive and not easy to put down. Are you sold yet?
I love reading toxic dysfunctional mother and daughter relationship stories and this one had it in the spades! The story is told in the voices of both mother and daughter here in the present time and from the past. Some of the content was extremely sad dark and disturbing but yet it was also so damn exciting that it totally sucked me right into the narrative.
Holy crap, this was a wild book!!
A very fast-paced psychological thrillers that was impossible to put down (I flew through the last 70% in less than a day)! The story is a twisted one of a dysfunctional mother and daughter who are keeping decades of lies from one another and the rest of the world. Though some of the multiple twists were predictable, others were not at all, which was satisfying. The entire story was so dark, yet so entertaining, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a wildly addicting thriller! I definitely look forward to reading more of John Marrs’ books after finishing this one.

3.5 stars
It was a fast paced read, but the twists weren't surprising. Having an unreliable character adds to the mystery of this book
Absolutely loved this book! Every time I would think I knew where the story was going and how it was going to end, wham!, John Marrs throws a new twist at you and I had to stay up and keep reading to see how it would end.
There's a very haunting psychology within the story, a powerful mother-daughter connection, that at the end made me tell everyone I know, "Please read this book so we can talk about it! What would you do in mother/daughter's position??"
And I promise, the very first couple of pages will draw you in and hook you. Definitely a great book to add to your summer must-read list!
Thank you so much NetGalley and Mr. John Marrs for the digital ARC and chance to read such a captivating book in exchange for my honest review.

I have just finished reading this book and I am still in awe-beyond shocked. I love reading thrillers but I haven’t read anything near to this story. This book is definitely disturbing, terrific but terrifying, gripping page turner with lots and lots of twists(which I absolutely loved but many of them I had figured out before). It’s also quite sad tbh and the ending was completely unexpected. This book has left me feeling restless and anxious and now I still need some time to take in what I just read.
This is my first John Marrs book and will be looking to read more of his books.
Thankyou Netgalley for the e-arc. It’s also on kindle unlimited so I downloaded mine from KU as well.
