This was one wild and twisted story, one where the first paragraph sucks you in. It was suspenseful and I didn’t know who to trust because I felt like every character was hiding something. When the truth was revealed, it was something I couldn’t have predicted. The ending was full of action and came to a satisfying conclusion.
Tabitha is struggling to make ends meet as a waitress in a small New Hampshire town and in walks Connor, her teenage love. He was the rich, handsome boy at the country club she worked at. Their young love was doomed. But the old sparks are still there and they plan on starting a new life together. Trouble is, Connor is married to Nina, an older, wealthy woman who he can’t simply leave for another woman as their prenup will leave him with nothing.
Connor returns to his life of luxury in the Hamptons to figure out an escape plan but Nina knows that Connor has been a bad boy. Soon after, Nina is found dead. Originally ruled a suicide, it is clear that she was murdered. And guess who is the prime suspect? Tabitha.
The Wife Who Knew Too Much is a fast-paced thriller that has some good twists that will keep you interested. Pretty much everyone is worthy of suspicion, except for the totally in way over her head Tabitha, who seems a bit too naïve at times. I enjoyed it.
Many thanks for NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and author Michele Campbell for the advance copy.
This book was a good read and kept me engaged until the very end. I expected the twist at the end but still enjoyed how the plot was laid out and how the story unfolded. Would definitely recommend this book!
The Wife Who Knew Too Much is one of my favorite books I have read this year. It was great and I highly recommend it and giving it one hundred stars if I could.
This one didn't start off well for me and never recovered. Tabitha (He calls her "Tabby." Yuck!) and Connor were supposedly high school sweethearts. I never felt that was believable. Rich country club boy and local poor girl. No. So I was even more unsympathetic when they meet years later and begin an affair. He is richer and she is poorer. Add to that the wife who supposedly commits suicide. Or is murdered. Who had the wherewithal to write a diary entry as she is dying? I couldn't get past the ever increasing pile of stereotypes and clichés.
This is my second book by Campbell and she didn’t disappoint! The author hooks you from the first page with a message written from Nina, the first wife. The plot has a bit of an unreliable narrators situation going on, which I love! If that’s not your thing, I’d probably skip this one or not have high expectations.
It’s the 4th of July. A huge party is being thrown at Windswept, a 30’s style mansion on the beach in the Hamptons. It’s one of those parties for the elite, the wealthy, the celebrities. The paparazzo are everywhere, trying to get a photo. Nina Levitt is the reigning queen of Windswept and she is writing in her diary. She married into the wealth and privilege of the Levitt fortune when she married Edward Levitt, a rich and powerful man, many years her senior. After Edward died, Nina inherited his vast wealth. But all the money and a second marriage to a much-younger man is not a recipe for happiness and peace for Nina. She writes that if she dies unexpectedly, it is her husband, Connor’s fault. Connor and a mysterious “her”.
.
We then meet Tabitha. She’s a waitress at a busy restaurant/pub on Baldwin Lake in NH. She tells us a story about how, as a teenager, she fell in love with Connor Ford. Tabitha worked at the pool at Connor’s country club. Rich boy/poor girl. One crazy-in-love summer long ago. Tabitha had never really forgotten Connor. So imagine her surprise when Connor shows up at the restaurant out of the blue.

This book is all soap opera drama, popcorn thriller, perfect beach read. It’s slow to start, but it picked up speed and I couldn’t put it down. The characters weave together with more than a few red herrings. As the story went on, I was more invested in the characters, particularly Tabitha.
.
Read it or skip it? If you’re a thriller/mystery/domestic drama fan and you don’t mind suspending disbelief, Read it! It’s a fun summer escape with tons of action at the end. I guessed the ending, but I still enjoyed this one.
Wow I loved this one! Tabitha bumps into Connor, her first love, years later and the sparks still fly. The only problem is Connor is already married, to Nina an incredibly wealthy older woman and due to a clever prenup (on Nina’s part) if he leaves her he’ll lose everything. After she dies there seems to be no reason to prevent Connor and Tabitha being together but then things start to unravel and Tabitha is left trying to work out if there’s more to Nina’s death and if so if she too is in danger.
This, to me, is the perfect recipe for a thriller; a great opening hook, fast paced, full of action, good twists, excellent writing and a main character you really root for! Now off to read everything else Michele Campbell has written!
4.5 stars rounded up to 5
Tabitha fell in love with Connor when she was a teenager. Their relationship only lasted one summer, but she has never felt the same way about any other man. When Connor walks back into her life, she can't believe it. He's married now though... to an extremely wealthy woman, who also happens to be twenty years older than him. Soon after they reconnect, Connor's wife dies. It seems Tabitha and Connor can finally be together. Then suspicions about the first wife's death have Tabitha questioning how well she knows her new husband, and everyone else questioning Tabitha.
The novel opens with an entry from the first wife's diary. Otherwise, the story is told from Tabitha's point of view. Tabitha is often naive and blinded by love. I like a strong female protagonist, so I wasn't loving Tabitha. Later in the novel, she does show some growth and I started liking her more. The story was gripping, dramatic, and fun. A dose of romance, plenty of betrayal, and a murder mystery.
I read this in one sitting, which I hadn't planned to do. So, that's a sign that I definitely enjoyed it. Dark, twisty, and entertaining.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Any book that starts with a diary entry definitely has my full attention!! The Wife Who Knew Too Much starts off with Ninas words on paper - she fears for her life ... LETS GO!! 👏
The book told from our main character, Tabitha's perspective centres around the story of herself, Nina and Connor ... it's a total soap opera! And while they don't normally have my attention this plot certainly did. I've been holding out for a domestic thriller this summer and finally here it is. This book is packed with ALL the twists and will serve you with literary whiplash! (Is this already a term? Because it should be!) You'll like some of these characters and despise others ... and just when you think you know what's up, think again my friends.
This is my first Michele Campbell book and definitely won't be my last ... can she ever write! Huge thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for my review copy!
Wow what a wild ride!! This book was such a good one! This was one of those books I just couldn’t put down! I tried really hard to figure out where the story was taking me, but thankfully I couldn’t figure it out! I always love when a story keeps me guessing and has surprises for me! This one gets 4.5 stars!
I received an ARC of this complex tale of love and greed. A real page-turner, I couldn't put it down!
This is the third novel I’ve read by Campbell and I’ve largely enjoyed them all. This one did a great job alternating between two different time periods and maintaining my interest for both. It was a twisty thriller where I did not predict the outcome. I found the last 20% of the book to be a bit too unrealistic with a few implausible storylines that probably weren’t necessary. That knocked this down from a solid 4 stars to 3.5 stars for me. It was a interesting read though which largely kept my interest, so I’m rounding up to 4 ⭐️.
As this mystery begins, we see Nina Ford writing in her diary on July 4. “My husband is going to kill me…he’s in love with someone else. And he wants my money.” In the chapter that follows, also on July 4, she’s discovered dead in her swimming pool. Well, that’s a start to make you keep reading!
Now back to Memorial Day weekend when Connor Ford walks into a lakeside restaurant in New Hampshire. Tabitha is his server. He was Tabitha’s first love thirteen years ago when she was seventeen. For many reasons, they have not seen each other since that summer. He asks to meet her after her shift ends. Of course, she agrees. And, of course, they spend the night together. And, of course, she gets pregnant. Connor wants to marry her but there is a catch and it’s a big one. He’s already married to Nina, twenty years his senior, and has signed an iron clad prenup that gives him nothing if he cheats on her but millions if she divorces him. Connor tells Tabitha that she can’t call him, can’t see him but that everything will work out. Then Nina drowns.
The Wife who Knew too Much is just delicious. Filled with luxurious houses, city apartments, private jets and yachts and and peopled with private chefs, housekeepers, security teams and personal shoppers, it’s a world that Tabitha didn’t know existed. It is also a world filled with treachery, betrayal, cheating and incredible danger. Let’s hope Tabitha survives. Nina didn’t. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and Michele Campbell for this ARC.
I crave a good opening hook in a thriller and this begins with a diary entry from Nina who says she knows her husband is planning on killing her so if she winds up dead he did it...HOOKED!
This book has it all: Money, privilege, lies, betrayal, murder what more do you need? I loved it and this author is on my instant buy list! Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.
This book starts with a bang as you read the last diary entry of Nina, a dead socialite. “If I die unexpectedly, it was foul play, and Connor was behind it. Connor and her.” It moves at a fast pace from there until the end. This thriller is filled with misdirection to keep you guessing. Every time you think you’ve figured something out, a twist happens that brings you back to square one.
Tabitha has been unlucky in love. As a teenager, Tabitha’s heart was broken by Connor -- the popular boy who was a member of the country club where she worked. By chance, Connor comes back into Tabitha’s life years later. Her life has gotten worse while Connor’s has improved significantly. He married for money. However, he is extremely unhappy with his wife, Nina. Connor reveals to Tabitha that he’s always loved her, and the two quickly begin an affair.
When Nina appears to have taken her own life, Connor is suddenly free to be with Tabitha. It seems like Tabitha has finally found her happily ever after. However, she discovers almost immediately that nothing is what it seems in Connor’s world. Suspicions are raised about Nina’s death and Connor’s past. Is she equipped to handle this treacherous world?
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only wish was that Tabitha had been stronger. She’s a passive participant in this story; the weak wife who gets pushed around by everyone. That aside, this captivating story keeps you engaged with all of the twists and turns that you won’t see coming. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great summer thriller.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advance reader copy. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
A solid story with decent pacing and believable characters — a good addition to the psychological suspense genre
I enjoyed this easy to read mystery/thriller, finishing in one day. It was fast paced and definitely kept you guessing. But the plot was convoluted and I found myself doing some major eye rolling and forehead slapping. Plus there were too many characters and I really never cared much for any of them. I'm sure there are many who would love this book but it just wasn't a favorite for me.
As a fan of Michele Campbell’s last book, The Stranger on the Beach, I was so excited for her new book.
Thank you to #netgalley and @StMartinsPress for the advanced copy for my honest review! This book is out July 28th
Synopsis: Tabitha Girard never quite got over her summer romance with Connor Ford, the preppy, rich kid she used to see when she was the country club pool girl in New Hampshire. Years later, he emerges back in her life as a man married to a much older, very wealthy woman, Nina. Connor and Tabitha start having an affair...and somehow Nina ends up dead. And Tabitha finds Nina’s diary about what happened that night… who really killed Nina? Who she can really trust?
My Review:⭐️⭐⭐⭐ / 5 stars
Michele Campbell really knows how to write her thrillers. I was speeding through this nail-biter of a thriller because I really HAD to know what happened. And Tabitha, the poor girl.. So naive that I wanted to jump through the pages and just shake her. Connor just screamed “sleazy bad guy” that just happened to be sexy. But is he good or bad? You goi back and forth when reading and really do not truly know even after finishing. The book had so many twists that I really did not see all the reveals that happen at the end. It was sooooo good. Perfect summer beach read! Highly recommend.
The Wife Who Knew Too Much is the kind of book that's perfect for the summer, with all of the rich and backstabbing.
Connor and Tabitha were in love as teens but money drove them apart. He comes back into her life and he's married to a super-wealthy woman he says that he doesn't love. Tabitha finds herself pulled back into Connor's messy, messy life. But that's a disservice to them both, because she jumps happily back into his life. You know the kind of man who's trouble? Pop culture has a less friendly name for the Connors of the world but I was hooked from the start of this book. Stories from the perspective of the mistress are usually a strong no from me, but that's one of the ways this book shines. It felt very like an old noir, b-movie on TCM in that way, the genders just reversed.
Tabitha was not my favorite protagonist because I frequently wanted to chastise her, but without her actions, good or bad, there's no story. This book was a fun, fast read.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC!
