An excellent thriller with many twists and turns, will recommend for fans of Ruth Ware and modern mysteries.
I really enjoyed this book! The addition of some chapters being read from Nina's diary really added to the story. The end was a bit messy, there were almost too many twists that I couldn't keep up but overall I liked it.
A good thriller novel always catches my eye. From the description therefore, I was immediately hooked and had to read this one. So thanks to NetGalley & St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. That said, the first half of the book read like a romance novel with the back story Tabitha and Conner’s past romance coming back to life. And yet, Nina’s chapters from her point of view make the reader know immediately that this story has a dark side waiting to unfold. That said, I couldn’t put this book down and wanted to see who was at the heart of Nina’s murder. Once the plot thickened and we found out the twist, I can honestly say while it made sense, I wasn’t completely sold on how this book was tied together in the end. Don’t get me wrong the ending was OK in its own right something felt like it was still missing for me. Overall, though, definitely a great mystery read with lots of twists and turns. Would recommend for those who enjoy a suspenseful ride nonetheless.
A very solid, 4.5 star book. My favorite genre-- mystery/thriller, hooked from page one, til the end.
All I can say is WOW. This is hands down the best book I've read in a long while, and my favorite read in 2020. e Five Stars for my first Michele Campbell read - believe me I've already downloaded all of her others.
This book simultaneously hooked me, scared me, left me staying up way too late each night for just "one more page". Campbell is truly a master at suspense and thrill with a story line I never saw coming until it happened and I was left breathless...truly!
Five stars all the way...don't miss out on this one; I see this as a totally killer (no pun intended) big screen movie or Netflix release!
A page-turner of a thriller. I enjoyed the story to the very last page. Tabitha meets the love of her life as a waitress when she's working at a country club. He's a rich guy, she's a working-class gal. One night they are caught in his bedroom and his grandmother forbids him from seeing her again. Tabitha is heartbroken but live goes on. She marries and divorces someone, several years go by. Then Connor shows up in her diner. They connect and have one fantastic weekend together but there is one catch. Connor is married to a wealthy, famous woman. How will Tabitha and Connor find true happiness again? I enjoyed this quick thriller that kept on the edge of my seat. It was a slow starter and took about 150 pages to really get going but it laid a solid foundation for the quick turns it took later in the book. I loved it. Thank you to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for my advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Great read that I couldn't put down! Michele kept me guessing throughout the book and everytime I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. She did a great job of introducing the characters and getting me invested in their lives. I will read all of her books- she has a new fan!
Summary: A wealthy woman loses her husband and then finds true love in a much younger man, She is head over hills for him. A hurried marriage might leave you vulnerable to those you thought you could trust. When this prestigious woman comes up dead, it much resembles a suicide until the truth is set free. Everyone has a past and that past my not always be a good one. Don't let anyone slip by because you may miss who the really troubled ones really are.
This is my first time reading this author and wont be my last.
Michele Campbell has laid out this book wonderfully. The Characters are very well explained and I had no probably keeping anyone straight (happens sometimes I know.) The Plot of "The Wife Who Knew to Much" was just that, A wife who knew to much. But don't let that fool you, This book kept me guessing. I think this book set itself out from others because I can truly see this as a movie script! I was hooked until the very end and the ending left me speechless. I also found the ending very like-able. Not all books have a happy ending or do they?
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of The Wife Who Knew Too Much.
I'm a first time reader of Michele Campbell and was drawn to The Wife Who Knew Too Much after the title and synopsis caught my eye. I was immediately hooked after reading the introductory chapter featuring Nina, a wealthy woman laced with fear towards her husband and his alleged plan to kill her. Following her introduction, we are then introduced to Tabitha, a waitress struggling to make ends meet and Connor, Tabitha's high school boyfriend and member of one of the wealthiest families in New Hampshire. We are given flashbacks of Tabitha and Connor's relationship after Connor shows up to Tabitha's restaurant years later. One thing leads to another and Tabitha and Connor rekindle their relationship, but Connor is now married and his wife is Nina.
Nina's chapters were well written and added suspense to the overall storyline. Unfortunately, the rest fell flat. I found Tabitha to be extremely annoying and the insta-love between her and Connor years later felt rushed. The suspense was limited and by the time I reached the unveiling of the true story behind it all, it didn't pack a punch. An uninspiring resolution of the plot led to a lackluster ending.
All the way reading this I was thinking 3 stars then I got to 70% and couldn't put it down. This is def a slow burn with the last fourth being non-stop, action packed, twisty/turny. I must say if the author was trying to write unlikable characters , she did a good job. At times I did feel for Tabatha, the main character but some of the stupid excuses she believed from Conner was infuriating. Conner was a money grubbing jerk if you want my opinion. Thank you to St Martin's Press for the book to read and review.
Michele Campbell’s latest is a totally twisted, psychological thriller that keeps you guessing. Tabitha thinks she has finally gotten her prince when the love of her teenage years returns to find her after more than a decade. They restart their love affair but there are significant obstacles - he is married, there are questions about his past, and her ex may be trying to kill her. When tragedy strikes and suspicions are at at an all time high, it is hard to know what is real and who do believe in this completely unputdownable story. So, so good!
I read this in 3 sittings which, with a 13 year old and a 5 year old, can be a tough thing to do. I loved this book! Right from the start it just grabs you and pulls you in. There is the nostalgia of a coming of age love between a poor girl and rich boy that is sparked again during a chance meeting. Then throw in his current mega-rich wife, a drowning, a pregnancy, etc. and you have a great book! This book felt like an old friend. You can read the pages without having to stop and go back and reread a sentence that you just didn't quite get the first time. I was constantly wondering who to trust in the book. Was Conner lying? Was Nina? Was the narrator reliable, or would that be the twist? I just didn't know until the very end. I don't want to say much more so as to spoil the book, but just read it! I highly recommend it!
The book begins with a note explaining that if she died, that it was foul play. I read this book in two days. I would think that I had it all figured out, and then something new would happen. This is a MUST read!!!! Thank you NetGalley for the advance read and I will be telling people to get this book right when it comes out!!!!!
I received an ARC of the Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell from Netgalley.
As a fan of her works, this book is certainly in line with her signature style. Overall, I found the book intriguing. It was not one of my favorites from her by any stretch, but I wouldn’t say it was a let down either.
I experienced a hard time feeling in invested in some of the main characters (i.e. Tabitha and Connor). I wanted to root for Tabitha, but just found her to be immature. I could understand her wanting to take a chance on her first love, but at some point, the girl needed to get some self-respect. Connor, on the other hand, had few redeeming qualities. Maybe that is how he was supposed to come across, but I am more engaged in books when I feel I have a connection with a character to root for.
For me personally, I would have liked to dig deeper into the life of Nina. She was by far the most interesting and captivating character. And, the small snippets I received about her and Connor’s relationship were some of the best of the whole novel.
Overall, if you are wanting to read a thriller, this novel is one I think you would enjoy. But, I just don’t think it is up to par with other Michele Campbell releases.
The Wife Who Knew Too Much is not the first Michelle Campbell book that drew me in with the intriguing synopsis and setting. And the writing drew me in at first too - it had great character development for the first half of the book. Tabby, our scrappy waitress from the wrong side of the tracks fell in love with Connor, the grandson of the richest woman in their New Hampshire town, when they were just teenagers. Torn apart by their families and Connor's inability to live without the finer things in life, they split - until he came back to town 17 years later.
The second half of the book is where the writing fell off for me a bit. There was a lot more telling than showing as we come to find out that Connor's extremely wealthy older wife is dead, and Tabby is now pregnant with his child - and has become his new wife. While Tabby does discover some interesting tidbits as she navigates her new world, most of the answers were fairly obvious; there were also a lot of inconsistencies and holes in terms of the timeline, storytelling and police work. The dialogue became stilted and I felt that there was no communication between Tabby and Connor - and the reader.
The end of the novel was also tied up into a neat bow as we are told exactly what happened and how it happened. I would have loved the middle to be a bit more flushed out and the end to be a bit more mysterious.
Thank you to Netgalley for this preview!
I love thrillers but this one just didn't do it for me. The character development was lacking and a huge gap in the story left me wanting more details. The premise of the story held promise but I just needed more.
This book started off very well and definitely caught my interest. As the story went on though I felt that it fell flat in parts. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters. The revelations were kind of predictable and not very twisty. I did not like the resolution to Connor’s story line. Just not the book for me. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for granting early access to this book. I will be posting this review today to my Bookstagram and companion Facebook page @thatreadingrealtor.
I read this book in one day. It was a little crazy at times but I love reading Campbell’s books. You really root for Tabitha.
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy.
Thank you NetGalley for my ARC. This is the 1st book I’ve read by Michele Campbell. Wow! This was definitely a thriller and kept me guessing about what was going to happen next. So many different twists made this a quick read for me.
So Tabitha and Connor had a high school summer romance back in the day. This was unacceptable to their families and it didn't go any further, except many years later Tabitha still hasn't been able to let it go. Then one day the unthinkable happens: Connor shows up at her job! But...he's now married to a rich woman. The beginning of the book opens with a diary entry of Nina basically putting it out there that if she died unexpectedly that her husband was to blame. Then, the next morning she was found drowned. There are lots of twists and my loyalties shifted back and forth several times. Tabitha is a sweet girl, but I found myself annoyed by her poor choices and lack of situational awareness. I also figured out what was going on before the reveal, but the story was fast-paced and did keep me reading, so there's that. I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it.
