Thank you fro the advance copy!
While I enjoyed this book, lots of twists and turns, I found the main character to be annoying. Honestly, every move she made was dumb! But it was quick paced and kept my attention. I would recommend this book .
The Wife Who Knew Too Much: A Novel
by Michele C. Martinez
Nina Levitt is the prominent widow of real estate tycoon Edward Levitt.
Nina is throwing her lavish annual 4th of July party and she should be enjoying her guests. But Nina has something more important to do. She is writing in her diary to leave a message that in the event of her untimely death that it is foul play. And it was her husband Connor and her that were responsible.
The next day Nina Levitt is found dead, floating in her pool.
Tabitha knows Connor. Thirteen years ago, Connor spent his summer days lounging by the country club pool with his many cousins. Tabitha was a pool girl working at that same country club. It is hard not to notice him and when he strikes up a conversation with Tabitha, she is smitten. When he invites her to come and listen to him play with his band, she can’t say no even though as a staff member she isn’t allowed. What follows is a relationship that Tabitha only dreamed of. She sneaks out of her grandparents’ house at night to meet up with him. They are in love. But when Connor sneaks her into his grandmother’s estate, one time too many, their relationship is discovered. She quickly learns the outreach of his grandmother Nell, and she never sees him again.
That is until Memorial Day weekend 13 years later, when Connor walks into the restaurant where Tabitha is working. Are her eyes playing a trick on her? Assigned to his table she approaches him with both trepidation and excitement. All those old feelings are rising to the surface and she tries desperately to push them away. He is after all married to the famous Nina Levitt.
Connor proclaims that his love for her never died and that letting her go all those years ago was the biggest mistake he ever made. They continue the conversation after Tabitha leaves work and although her mind is telling her to run, her heart is telling her to stay. Their love is reignited, and Connor says he will tell Nina about their love and leave her.
But Connor signed a prenup and if he leaves Nina or is caught cheating on her he will lose millions. How far will he go to be with his one true love?
The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell is a twisty whodunit that will have you questioning everything, and everyone, you thought you knew. This is my first read from this author, but I am certainly intrigued enough to seek out more in future.
Tabitha is working at a country club when she first meets the charming Connor Ford. A summer romance ensues, and even though the relationship is deemed unacceptable by both of their families, Tabitha (Tabby) knows that she has fallen in love with her soulmate. But alas, the two are driven apart by their differing circumstances, and each go on to marry other people, in Tabitha's case a drug dealer, and in Connor's, the wealthy and controlling Nina. Yet Connor continues to carry a torch for Tabby, and when Nina purportedly takes her own life, the path seems clear for them to finally be together. That is, until a note, seemingly from beyond the grave, has Nina casting aspersions, and accusations, pertaining to her death.
This is a novel that will keep you on your toes as you struggle to separate fact from fiction, and truthtellers from deceivers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.
I rate this book 3 1/2 stars
It's Always The Husband was my first book from this author and I am thankful that @netgalley and @stmartinspres gifted me the eARC of The Who Knew Too Much in exchange for my honest review.
Tabitha Girard and Connor Ford had a whirlwind romance one summer while Tabitha was working as a pool girl at Connor's country club. Connor meant everything to Tabitha and she never really got over him.
Years later, when Conner came back into Tabitha's life, he was older and richer and married for money.
Connor's wife, Nina, takes her own life and frees Connor and Tabitha to get back together and get married. But all glitter is not gold, and Tabitha soon finds Nina's diary and questions if Nina really did in fact kill herself.
Who is Connor? Why did he really marry Nina? Is Tabitha really his true love?
What I loved:
I loved the twists and turns in this book! I found myself having a hard time putting it down near the middle - end.
What I struggled with:
I didn't like that Tabitha and Connor had an affair and then proclaimed undying love for each other. They had not seen each other since they were teens and a lot changes in that amount of time.
I found Tabitha frustrating in some of the decisions she made and I didn't really like Connor. Even in the end, I found him frustrating. 🙊 I wanted to feel attached to their characters but I didn't.
Without giving anything away, the best part of the book is the twists. Definitely worth reading though!!
A great thriller of a novel that will leave you hooked as you read through the pages. I enjoyed reading about Tabitha and Connor's past and often felt sorry for their chance of a life of love together. Fast forward many years later, they are now adults, and Connor is married to a rich and successful woman and living a life of luxury. Connor bumps into Tabitha all these years later at her place of work and she cannot believe she is staring at the man she loved and lost all those years ago. Can it truly be him?
I loved the suspense and thrills that build up as you read through the chapters. Not everything is as it appears to be, not everyone is who they pretend to be, and what you learn about some of these characters will shock you. I loved the suspense of the storyline and watching it all unfold. A definite must-add to your TBR list for 2020.
Curiosity..........and all that.
Gonna get 'cha in a lotta trouble.
The Wife Who Knew Too Much plays out with the inner nudge of a female persuasion to always draw aside the curtain. We all seem programmed to not let sleeping dogs lie. Why do we poke at something relentlessly until it sinks its teeth into us?
Tabitha Girard leans against the wall of The Grill for a moment's reprieve from a heavy night of waitressing. Her shift is almost over, but her feet just want to find the door. That's what she has left after a failed marriage to the devious Derek Cassidy who's doing time in prison.
Tabitha makes one last run to take the drink order from a young man at the bar. When he turns around, she almost faints. It's Connor Ford. She and Connor had quite the relationship back in high school. That very night, Tabitha and Connor are destined to re-create old times back at the ski resort lodge where Connor is staying. Ah, Tabitha, you should have closed out this guy's tab and left it on the bar.
Michele Campbell creates an entertaining novel wrapped around the games that people play. But there seems to be the usual formula happening here. Guy and girl rekindle romance only to have deep, deep secrets float to the surface. Girl starts sinking quickly into this quicksand when she can't leave well enough alone. It was a 3.5 for me kicked up to 4 stars. Campbell knows her way around a novel, but I'd sure like to see her grab something less predictable and more involved. I'm looking forward to a puzzle packed one in the future.
I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to St. Martin's Press and to Michele Campbell for the opportunity.
Connor and Tabitha had a summer fling that didn't end well when they were teenagers. Years later Connor walks back into Tabitha's life and they pick up right where they left off. There's only one problem. Connor is married to the wealthy Nina Levitt and there's an ironclad pre-nup. If he initiates a divorce he is left with nothing. Will he walk away from millions to be with Tabitha? As it turns out, he doesn't have to make that choice since Nina was found dead in her pool from drowning. It was ruled suicide. Shortly after Nina's death, Tabitha and Connor get married but married life isn't so smooth as they navigate speculation and questions about what really happened to Nina.
I really wanted to like this book as I've loved all of Michelle Campbell's other books but I just couldn't. I found the beginning hard to read and slow moving. Tabitha frustrated me with her stupidity. Fortunately towards the end it did pick up for me and I did find Tabitha a little more likable.
A down on her luck waitress “luckily” crosses paths with the one who got away, thirteen years after she last saw him.
Tabitha is a working class girl. She waitresses at a bar and grill in a rundown resort town in the Northeast. Previously married to a drug dealer, she is trying to make ends meet and live some semblance of a life.
The story recounts Tabitha and Connor’s first meeting. Connor, a rich boy she met at the town pool when she was just seventeen, shows himself to be of weak character from the outset.
Now has walked back into her life for seemingly no reason. He lies to Tabitha about their meeting being a coincidence as he declares his undying love for her. This part of the story is not well-developed.
Connor comes with plenty of strings as he is married to Nina, a much older and wealthy business-philanthropist. He seems to want his cake however as he covets Tabitha while carefully calculating not getting caught with her as it would negate his pre-nup. Meanwhile Tabitha has discovered a secret of her own, one she can’t wait to tell Connor about.
When his wife turns up dead in her swimming pool the night of a prestigious party held every year at her lavish Hampton’s mansion, Connor and Tabitha secretly marry.
Nina’s death is ruled a suicide. Connor starts behaving very strangely and seems to blame his new wife for flaunting their marriage. As the ruled cause of Nina’s death begins to unravel, an investigation opens up into what really happened to her that night and Tabitha becomes the center of a nightmare, one where she doubts everyone she surrounded by including Connor.
The storyline is weak and cannot support the events that take place. Connor comes across as an easy villain, especially in his harsh treatment of Tabitha and all he has to gain in lieu of his wife’s death. The problem is that the wow factor woven into the plot falls flat. Part of this is because there is too much that goes unexplained. Stories are simply dropped with no explanation or wrap up.
Tabitha is madly in love with someone who has never stood up for her. She comes across as childish and idealistic and the passage of time does nothing to diminish her naiveté. Connor’s motivations stay largely hidden as his un-likability grows as the story progresses. We know that Tabitha has put herself in a dangerous situation all in the name of undying love but her motivation to put up with the new life she has chosen even as it’s cryptically pointed out that she heed the warning to leave make her hard to feel sympathy for.
BRB Rating: Skip It.
I received a copy of THE WIFE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH on NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to the publisher and author.
Five stars and here’s why:
WOW! Just WOW! I really loved it and this book kept me up all night reading it. I suffered a serious book hangover! This domestic thriller/mystery has it all – love, cheating, lust, greed, and of course, murder. If you like excellent writing and fantastic plotting with a serious amount of twists that you won’t see coming, then this story is for you. Highly recommend.
This was a great mystery with alot of twists and turns. I liked the writing style and the characters were portrayed brilliantly. The Wife Who Knew Too Much was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely recommend. Thank you netgalley for letting me give an honest review of this book.
Holy moly!! What a wild ride. I read a lot of thrillers & there were definitely some twists I did not see coming. This is my first book by this author, but I will definitely be getting her other books. Special thank you to Netgalley & the author for a free book in exchange for an honest review.
The Wife Who Knew Too Much is a psychological suspense in the same vein as Gone Girl. For a lot of people that would be a plus for me, not so much. The main characters in this book are real hard to sympathize with as they are all cheaters of some sort and not real nice people. Unlike Gone Girl this book kept me reading just to see if karma catches up to them all. The plot does throw in some quick twists and turns to make the end of the book better than the beginning. The book is okay and I feel than people who like Gone Girl will probably love it but I am not in love or even like with this book. My voluntary, unbiased review is base upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book. My reviews can be read on my GoodReads account here: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1335387-kelly
Thrilled to receive an invite to review the latest from Michele Campbell means this arc propelled to the top of my pile and I was happy to read a great domestic noir thriller with solid character development and a gripping story that piled on the suspense and suspects. And oh so many suspects in the possible murder of Nina, Connors husband who happens to be Tabithas schoolgirl crush and the guy who got away but who suddenly reappears as a bolt from the blue back into Tabithas rather humdrum life. Connor is gorgeous, sexy, smart and really really wealthy through his marriage. They spend a night together and their love rekindles. What could go wrong. His wife’s death for one thing. And oh so much more. Read this one right away - no disappointments here,
If you are the type of reader who gets impatient with characters for making dumb decisions, this is not your book. Almost every major character acts against his or her best interest, often repeatedly. Affair with a married man whom you've just seen dining with an anonymous beauty? Check. Tracking down said married man at his wife's mansion because he won't respond to your texts? Check. Waiting to act on damning evidence until after you poke around in a dark hallway, throw a party for all your enemies, or otherwise put yourself in terrible danger? Check, check, and check.
On the other hand, if you are the type of reader who forgives characters who act foolishly in service of the plot, you will probably enjoy this book. The settings are eerie and atmospheric, with echoes of Manderley and a crew of Mrs./Mr. Danvers to create tension and suspicion.
Many thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for the honest review.
This was an extremely enjoyable thriller with many twists and turns. I finished it in less than a day because I couldn't wait to find out whodunit. It has a lot of the traditionally fun elements of a classic noir, with many crosses and double crosses, and the ending was excellent. No reinventing the wheel here, but if you like domestic suspense, enjoy film noir, and you are aware of the rule that it's "Always the Husband" (I'll have to read this author's previous book now!) you will certainly enjoy this fun and clever mystery. Best possible suspense beach read and probably a really fun audiobook to listen to as well. I am looking forward to reading more from this author. Thanks to Michele Campbell, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for this fun escapist book.
Wow, this book will hook you from page one. Can you say twist?!
This book was fab! Thanks Netgalley for the Arc.
This book grabs your attention from the beginning. A love story mixed with deceit, suspense and a twist at the end that you won't see coming! A quick and satisfying read.
With a title that clunky, I didn't expect a lot from this novel but I vastly underrated it. Michele Campbell has done a great job of crafting a story that will have you on the edge of your seat. The first chapter made me think it was going to be another version of Gone Girl but it turned into a regular whodunit, if somebody did it.
The female main character, Tabitha, is my least favorite type of heroine. She is indecisive and lets life carry her along, without much purpose until this dramatic, life threatening situation changes everything.
The male main character, Connor, is quite stereotypical and flawed and I felt no real loss at his eventual end. He wasn't a bad guy but he wasn't a great guy either.
Despite this, the story was riveting. I was impatient while working out the clues, needing to know the particulars of the crime. This was my first work by Campbell but I'm going to seek out her other missiles since I enjoyed this one so much.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Tabith and Connor were in love the summer they met when they were teenager. Connor was rich and Tabith was just trying to make it by. There relationship was not accepted by his family so their lives move forward without each other. Then one day years later they meet again... Was this fate or was it planned. Tabith has no idea how much her life is about to change getting back together with Connor. Still rich but married! Then one day Connor's wife if dead and Tabith is pregnant... the few months late in her life she questions everything and everyone. Can she survive the life that she has started for her and her child? Does she really know that Connor didn't kill his wife... this is one you have to read to find it. Well worth it! Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to review this book. .
