It's been years since I've read The Hollows book, but I remembered that I loved them. When I saw American Demon coming out, I was thrilled.
It took me a bit to remember things, even with the character information in the beginning. Rachel is still with Trent, but Trent has been pretty much shunned by the elves. Landon is in charge now and he's been lying about what happened. Ivy isn't around much and she's only in the book a little which bummed me out a bit. Rachel and Jenks are still planning on working together, but the church needs a lot of work first. Trent and Ellsabeth are still battling over the girls. Trent has been giving her more time with them. Rachel constantly worries about Trent since she can't give him children. She thinks that he and Ellsabeth probably belong together, but Trent makes it very clear that he doesn't agree with that.
There is a new danger and Rachel and Trent are targets. A Baku enters their dreams and he uses people to kill the person they love. Eventually, the Baku takes over the body he's in. He takes parts of their souls over time. A new demon, Hodin, shows up and starts helping Rachel out. There's also a young elf, Zach, that wants to be with Trent and not Landon. Hodin hates Al, but he won't completely tell Rachel why. Al is being kept in hiding after the Baku found him in his sleep and he wanted to kill Rachel. Hodin sort of helps Rachel out and then later Trent, too. He's not very trustworthy, but he knows more about the Baku than anyone else. The growing group works together with both demon and elf magic.
One of the things I love about this series is the found family. Rachel is terrifying to people after everything that's happened. Others are angry. But her friends are always there for her. No matter what, they find their way to help each other.
"Family wasn't just those you grew up with, but those you grow better with."
There was a bit of repeating and I think the book would have been better if it was just a bit shorter. But overall, I really enjoyed this and I'm happy to be back with The Hollows books. I'll definitely be reading the next book after that ending.
I gave this book 4 stars. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my review copy. Quote taken from an ARC and may change before final publication.
Thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for providing me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I am so happy to be delving back into the world of the Hollows. Don't get me wrong. I like Kim Harrison's Peri Reed, the palate cleanser she worked on to give herself a break from the "finished" Hollows. I'm really sad that she didn't publish the third one. I didn't care much for her standalone Perfunctory Affection. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't her best work either. I hate to say it, because I know authors need to write other things to keep themselves happy and fresh-minded, but Hollows is where she shines the most. It's where she's at the top of her game.
This one opens, luckily, with a quick recap of characters and recent events, which is a blessing. I tried hard to complete my reread of the series before I needed to read this one. Alas, my reading mojo hasn't been nearly as big as in previous years, so I finished up through book five (gasp, that ending is so hard) and wasn't able to finish more.
I'm so glad we're back in Rachel's life. Jenks is one of my favorite characters, and I love Al. Sadly, Al takes a backseat in this one due to a VERY dangerous enemy, but that turns out to be okay. A few new characters are introduced that I really, really like, and Cincinatti's shaken up yet again with new leadership on multiple fronts.
All in all, I loved this one very much, but I did have to deduct half a star and go with 4.5, strictly because of something at the end. It would have been a whole star, but luckily, Harrison hinted that there will be a revisiting of this specific thing. (Can't and won't spoil it for you, sorry-not-sorry)
Looking forward to the next book, The Rule, already. Hope it releases next year and we get a little extra resolution and a lot more of Rachel and gang. Keep 'em coming, Harrison!
Oh my word! So good to be back in the world of the Hollows! Loved diving back in with the usual cast of characters though there have been some changes. Can't wait to see what happens next!
I've read a few Kim Harrison's years ago, but not this series, and let me tell you, I had NO IDEA what was going on. This is definitely a series you need to start from the beginning if you're going to take it on. Some books rope you in even if you don't quite understand what's happening because the writing is so good and the characters are intriguing but this one just left me frustrated. I might try the series from the beginning and see if that helps.
4.5 Rachel is back! This is a wonderful continuation of this beloved series! I'm pretty pleased to tell you that there is an awesome summary at the very beginning with all you need to refresh your memory of the previous storylines. But spoiler warning if you haven't read any previous books!
When random couples in The Hollows start trying to kill each other, Rachel starts noticing a pattern with their auras, and thinks she could help stop it. But she needs help from friends and even enemies, and a blast from the past might prove the key. Loved seeing the whole gang again, especially Jenks and Bis! So happy that there will be more of this great series!
Wow, I didn’t realize how much i missed the world of the hollows! So glad to see rachel, jenks, ivy and al. There is a great new story arc coming, and i am looking forward to all that comes next!
The Hollows series has always been one of my favorite series. I loved this series so much, that I decided to re-read the series last year and in the process of doing that I found out that Kim Harrison was bringing it back. I was overly excited.
After reading AMERICAN DEMON I have come to the conclusion that I not only love the characters and the world, but I could honestly never get sick of anything that happens to Rachel and her gang.
THE RULE is already on my wishlist and I can't wait to see where Harrison brings Rachel, Trent, Jenx, Ivy and the rest of the gang between now and the epilogue in THE WITCH WITH NO NAME. Heck, if Harrison writes it, I would continue to read about her characters from there on as well.

Thanks to NetGalley for making an eARC copy of this book available to me.
Well, Kim Harrison is back with the first book in a new series once again featuring Rachel Morgan, witch/demon extraordinaire. Most of Rachel's regular support group are here for the ride, plus a couple of new ones: a teenage elf and a demon with some interesting connections. While I had been of the opinion that the previous series had grown a tad stale toward the end, this new book takes me back to how I felt about the early books in that series: excited to read it and excited to see what might come next. Longtime fans of the Rachel Morgan books will not be disappointed, and new fans can use the opening catch-up reference pages if they want to get a bit more info about the various characters.
This was a 4.5 star read for me, very close to be being a solid 5! It was so amazing to be back in the Hollows again and getting a new book was amazing! The thrill was top notch
This book takes place right after The Witch with No Name ends and before the epilogue. I loved getting to see Rachel and Trent together and more firmly into their relationship and see them truly start to blossom, even though there was still some angst and insecurities there due to outside factors.
I wish we had gotten more with Al in this book since he is one of my favorites and he only showed up at the very start and for the last chapter and in the last chapter, all his growth from being in reality went out the window when confronted with another Demon he didnt like and he did not treat Rachel with the respect they had built between them. I'm glad rachel stuck up for herself though!
Overall this book was intensely amazing and beautiful and wonderful and I cannot WAIT for this series to keep going and get book 15! Never stop writing these books Kim Harrison, please. I could live in the Hollows forever
Welcome back to the Hollows!
I was ridiculously excited when I heard there was to be a new Hollows book, and literally squealed with joy when NetGalley approved me for a digital ARC!
I was so disappointed when the series ended the first time, and I questioned how we could go back after the ending of book 13. But Kim Harrison has managed it rather successfully. We are reacquainted with most of our characters from the original series, and meet some new characters that seem like they will add a lot to the new series. If you loved Rachel's story in the past, I definitely recommend you read this book!
Slipping back into Kim Harrison's world of Rachel and her friends and foes is very comforting. It makes me wish that I could never leave it because once I start reading her books I feel lost and amazed, the real world forgotten and far away in my mind. Each new volume beckons me to indulge in another fantastic adventure where the fights, jokes, puns, some wicked magic and charismatic characters hold me in a trance until the last page is devoured.
This book was no exception. Generally I found what I usually enjoyed at the beginning and especially at the end. Most of what I find not enjoyable was scattered throughout the middle. The parts I don't really like were still masterfully written and do an excellent job of providing you with convincing characters and an engrossing atmosphere.
What is really liked about this book is despite the fact I haven't read a book in the Hollows series for years and forgot about most of the characters and previous books, For a Few Demons More does an amazing job at helping you catch up and can easily cater to a first time Hollows reader by giving a quick summary of past events, all while never compromising the pacing of the story. For Kim Harrison to appeal to all audiences this skillfully takes incredible literary talent and I wholeheartedly commend her for this.
This is why I can recommend this book to nearly everyone and you don't necessarily have to be a Hollows fan to enjoy this. I can't think of any other books the Hollows series reminds me of, but I can say if you watched the TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this should be an enjoyable book or if you played the video game Bayonetta, you might also like this book. This book is just some good supernatural fun and anyone wanting that should have their expectations met.
The latest installment of the Hollow series is a wild ride!! The mystery, the magic, and of course the action are all there and will keep you turning pages long into the night. I tried to read this slow, I wanted to savor it but it was just too good!!! Rachel's demon status is causing all kinds of problems for her and Trent. Not to mention two children, Trent's ex-fiance and Rachel's ruined Church. No matter how much good Rachel does haters wanna hate! Rachel is asked to help with a rash of new cases involving couples who suddenly try to kill each other. The demons are of course being blamed for this, but are they really involved? Rachel and Jenks begin to investigate but all is not as it seems., Rachel seems to be a target. But is it really her they are after? We meet some new friends and some very ancient foes. You will not want to miss this one! I always find myself laughing when reading these stories and I look forward to them like Christmas morning. Please do yourself a favor and pick this one up!!T
So happy to see a new Rachel Morgan book. New series, continuation of Rachel's story, I'm just happy to be reading about her and her friends again (I've really missed Al!). It took me a bit to get into this one, but once I did, it was a very fast read..Many thanks to NetGalley and Ace for the opportunity to read the ARC. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
So glad the gang is back in American Demon by Kim Harrison!! Even though it's been a few years since we've enjoyed Rachel, Jenks, Trent, Ivy, Bis & the others it felt like yesterday getting into the story. Hopefully there will be many more adventures in the Hollows with the gang - loved it! Thank you NetGalley!
Have you ever read a series that no matter how much time has come to pass you can’t seem to forget… “The Hallows” is that series for me. To be honest, I could’ve been doing something mundane such as eating a tomato and automatically be thrust in Rachel Morgan’s world. The Hallows left one fine lasting impression and that is why I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.
What was so great about Rachel Morgan’s return is that all of the great characters that we’ve met and fallen in love way back when are back and are better than ever before. I couldn’t ask for a better team working with our witch-born demon who is bound to save the world, damn the consequences.
Kim Harrison didn’t stop at reviving the existing crew either. A few more notable characters were added which further enlightened the story. That complex relationship that I thought was always questionable in the previous books was clearly defined and I am completely elated for those two (insert happy-dance emoji here).
American Demon had the perfect combination of baby mama drama, romance, mystery, thrill, and suspense. It left me heartbroken in the end but I am sure Rachel Morgan will remedy that situation in a kick-ass sort of way in the near future. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait that long for the next installment of this outstanding urban-fantasy series.
When I heard there was a new Hollows book coming out, I was overjoyed! When I found out it was on NetGalley, I was ecstatic! This book did not disappoint at all. Rachel is still just as funny & hot headed as ever. I also really enjoyed the reminders embedded throughout the story of past events; it's been a while since the last book so it was nice to have a refresher bit it didn't detract from the story. I really enjoyed this new "world" she was living in with demons being "out" so to speak. It was a nice touch that both added to the story & kept it fresh. I am excited for more installments!
The witch is back!
I have missed this world so much.
This is my all time favorite series and I was so sad when it ended with The Witch With No Name.
Then we got a teaser with The Turn, a Hollows Prequel featuring Trent's parents. I thought we might get more prequel books after that but we get more Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, Trent and Al!!!!! Which is even better.
The events in this book pick up right after the events of book 13, before the epilogue.
In American Demon the girls are still toddlers. Rachel and everyone are navigating life with a new Goddess, a new EverAfter, demons living among them, and she's still not getting credit for anything she does - like saving the world.
Rachel's also adjusting to her relationship with Trent.
The book opens with Rachel and Jenks checking out the status of their church. Construction crews have been working on rebuilding it after a large portion of it was destroyed in the final book. Ivy joins them but it is apparent she isn't going to be part of their crew anymore. She's with Nina.
All seems standard as they inspect the church, until a zombie shows up in the garden. Things get crazier from there.
Turns out something weird is going on. People are attacking their loved ones, then can't remember why or what happened.
You know Rachel is going to end up in the middle of it all.
Excellent read!!!! Trent gets better with every book. I love seeing him and Rachel work things out and move past their crazy history.
The new characters were interesting. I hope to see more of Hodin. I wish Al would have played a larger roll in this book. I missed his antics quite a bit but Hodin definitely filled the space.
I am so glad this series will continue. I missed it so much.
Reading American Demon was like seeing an old friend that hasn't been around in years.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BerkleyPublishing for the review copy of #AmericanDemon
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a E-ARC to review in exchange for my open and honest opinion.
Sometimes the end of something is just the beginning of a new chapter. Things don't have to end. Characters don't have to stop because, with some, there is so much more story to tell—case in point, American Demon, the first book in the extended Hallows universe.
I am so happy they are back.
Kim Harrison has brought back our favorite "itchy witch" as well as many of our other favorite characters. I am looking at you, Bis. Things are a bit different, and people are moving on with their lives; some are moving into new phases. But Rachel is Rachel, and where there are mischief and catastrophe, you know, she will be right there righting the wrongs and sticking up for her friends. In this story, someone has sent an entity called a Bacu after Rachel and her friends. It is a creature that strips your aura level by level, eventually driving you mad. Who sent it and why are they doing these things is the big mystery. We have a few new characters to enjoy and learn about. One is an elf. The other is a demon; both seem like a lot of fun and should prove more important as new books and stories are written.
The action is fun, the banter is standard for The Hollows, and Trent and Rachel are lovely as ever together. I Recommend to lovers of The Hallows, or if you want to get into a new world to read, get into The Hallows. You won't be disappointed.
Rachel Morgan is back and trying to pick up the pieces of her life. Ivy has decided to work with Nina at the FIB. The church is basically destroyed and the only thing she has is Trent, her Elven prince. Now suddenly zombies have been let loose in the city, and Inter-species couples are trying to kill each other. Rachel must find out who is doing this before it's too late, and there's another occurrence.
I loved The Hollows series and was extremely sad to see it end. I was happily surprised to see this new series and my favorite characters interacting again. My most favorite character is Jenks, he always wants to take on these big guys and he's a tiny pixie. He may be little but he's also incredibly clever. As always, I love that Rachel is a powerful, independent female character. Kim Harrison has created an imaginative world that makes for a great series for fantasy lovers everywhere.
It was fantastic to be reading about "itchy witch" again. Going back to this world after six years made me savor it more.
When the book begins Rachel is on the phone planning a park date with Trent, the girls and surprisingly, Ellasbeth too. Rachel is back at her old home/church. She is meeting Jenks and Ivy. They're trying to decide what their future looks like. Can they still work together or is time for one of them to move on? Should they reconstruct their home or find a new place? It looks like Ivy is ready to move on and live with Nina. Rachel understands but can't leave Jenks alone. This reunion is broken up by the appearance of a zombie.
The appearance of the zombie is the first clue that something is not right. New cases are popping up where couples are attacking their love ones for past grievances. Someone seems to have manipulated their minds while sleeping. When Al is attacked, Rachel knows this is too close to home.
Rachel knows she has her hands full. She is dealing with her relationship with Trent and his ex, the politics between Demons and Elves, a new vampire moving into town affecting Ivy's life and she can sense she is running out of time in stopping the new threat.
So many things I loved about American Demon!
I love Trent Kalamack. He has grown so much as a character. He likes himself better and it's all due to Rachel. He has made his own sacrifices and lost some of his position of importance as an Elf but he knows it's worth it.
Rachel acted so much more mature in American Demon. She lets people help her and she is pausing to think before reacting.
Al was adorable all the way around. I wish he was more prominent in this book. He makes me smile every time he shows up.
David, Ivy, Jenks and Bis are also so important to the series. It wouldn't be the same without them.
I still feel a tug on my heart every time Kisten is mentioned. I will always miss him.
So glad Kim Harrison is writing more books in this world. I've only one question, when is the next one out?
Cliffhanger: No
4/5 Fangs
