Kim Harrison's Hollows Series was my first real introduction to the Urban Fantasy genre. I guess you could say I have a soft spot in my heart for all things Rachael Morgan. When I discovered Harrison planned on a new chapter in her Hollows world stories, I felt immediately excited. American Demon did not disappoint. The book continued the same mystery, sexiness, and humor as all the others before. As always, Harrison's characters are endearing, fun, and interesting.
The reader follows Rachael Morgan as she navigates her world. We are introduced to a few new characters. The latest is a demon named Hodin that I think readers will really enjoy. The relationship between Trent and Rachael further develops, we see a plateau in regards to Ellasbeths plans, and, as is the case will all things Rachael, her plans go completely awry!
If you are a fan of the Hollows series I highly recommend this next chapter. If you are an urban fantasy fan or just want to see what it is all about, the Hollows world is a great start.
A huge THANK YOU to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy and the opportunity to review this fun jaunt into the Hollows.
I thought Kim Harrison had finished this series so it was a real treat to read anew book and catch up with Rachel, Ivy, and Jenks. Great read for lovers of the series but definitely not the book to start with. Welcome back old friends!
The hollows series always has a spot in my heart. It was the series that got my passion for reading back. That being said, I was super excited to go back to the hollows and see Rachel, Jenks, Trent, Al and hell even Ivy again. I was curious to see how she would start it up again after the epilogue we got in The Witch With No Name, It was okay …. Even a bit of a cop out in my opinion, but I can overlook it.
The books start shortly where The Witch With No Name ended and it was so nice to see them all again. Though the first few chapters it felt like she made a point to mention everyone who was someone in the series. I still enjoyed it, for the most part, revisiting the people, places and see how and what everyone is doing. Mostly the demons, what are they up to now topside and how are they handling it.
Some things were kind of funny, soon though we get thrown into the plot and it still okay even if a bit strange and odd … even for the hollows.
So one of the main parts I was looking forward to was seeing Rachel and Trent, them working together, being together and all the couple things, I was a bit disappointed when once again Rachel STILL doubted her relationship with Trent and why he loved her and so on. There was a reason for it ( of sorts) but still we worked so many books to get them together and he more than showed that he is with her all the way, we should be over this by now. Whatever the reason.
In other ways it also felt like typical Rachel, taking one step forward and three back.
I soon became a bit bored with her and stuff. I started to skim the book except the parts with AL, Trent or Jenks.
Overall I thought it was okay, I LOVED that we got to go back to the hollows, Rachel ugh … Oh and the Elisabeth being a fan of Rachel was just weird even for me.
Something just felt of and I’m not even sure what but maybe I just outgrew the series. I don’t know or maybe we just need a new voice, I think this could have been from Trent’s POV .
It would have been the same great people, world and series, just a fresh voice to it that we already know and love.
Speaking of Trent I think he was the best and I just like him more and more and I think out of all of them him and Al both grew the most in the series,
I also loved AL of course, while he had some issues, he is still the same ole Ale we know and love.
Overall, I think it was okay, bit boring but like I said maybe I just outgrew the series or I just can’t handle Rachel’s self-manipulation anymore, she always has some issues and if not she creates them.
I rate 3★ I might continue the series at some point but I’m not sure yet when even if I miss the world and characters.
American Demon picks up just about when we last saw Rachel & the gang. So effing happy to be back in the Hollows! Oh, how I missed it! This is one of my all time favorite series. Now all my favorite characters are back and kicking a$$. Rachel, Trent, Jenks, and Ivey are bringing the laughs, suspense, romance, and mystery that I love. We also get some new characters that you’ll love and hate. Kim Harrison did not disappoint and I can’t wait for more!

A trip back into the Hollows? Where do I sign-up?
American Demon brings us crashing back in the the chaotic world of Rachel Morgan and Trent Kalamack. Things are far, but settled as when we left them in The Witch with No Name. The world is trying to find its footing again in an era where Demons are no longer trapped, and are walking among them. The cast of the usual suspects are all there, and even the new characters are an story enhancing addition for what I hope is a series of new Rachel Morgan stories to come. As I got an advanced copy, I cannot divulge much of the story line, but I can say this. Prepare to have everything thing that you thought you knew about the end of the original series blow up in a million tiny pieces.
Rachel Morgan is back but the Hollows has never seemed so unfamiliar. After Rachel and Trent blew up the the eons long slavery of the demons and reshaped the very nature of magic, some might have expected a nice quiet happily ever after. But Rachel remains a magnet for trouble and a stalwart warrior in the face of injustice. While she is trying to put her business back together, a series to strange bouts of violence begin to erupt around the city. The authorities want to blame the newly free demons and Rachel will have none of it. She sets about to discover what is causing people to suddenly attack their partners for grudges long settled. So begins another adventure of chasing down bad guys, exploring magical mysteries and fighting against the elven conclave who want to separate Trent and Rachel.
I cannot say enough good things about the Hollows series. I love how Harrison has crafted a world of rich characters that continue to grow during the series. Characters lost are not forgotten. Relationships change and grow and are not always easy. There are even nods to the Hollows companion novel (The Turn - about Trent's parents) in this story. If you like paranormal adventure novels, this one if for you.
I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
Kim Harrison returns to The Hollows once again with famed Rachel Morgan in American Demon! It's been five years since The Hollows series came to an end, but Kim picks things up shortly where we left off, only a few months have gone by for Rachel and co. It was kind of nice to pick things up right away like you would with any other series, but wow, has a lot happened in this series that I forgot about because you know, over the course of ten years I was reading the original series and over five years ago it ended, but never fear! Kim has a helpful dossier in the beginning that sums up important events and mentions other characters working to give you the quick and gritty version of what happened in the original series.
Rachel has been trying to find some sense of normalcy to her life after everything that happened when the Goddess was reawakened. Her church and home is still destroyed and she's working hard to get it repaired all while living on Kisten's old houseboat. But all is not well in the Hollows, zombies are reportedly running about and then there's been a string of domestic abuse cases that don't add up and before she knows it, Rachel is wrapped up in the case.
It seems all those little happy moments where we saw our beloved characters moving onto a possible happily ever after didn't go quite as they planned. A lot of things keep popping up to derail any sense of peace they might have had. Rachel and Trent have been getting along in their relationship very well, but soon politics come into play that will threaten to tear them apart. Trent's elf status should mean that he marries another elf and have elf babies, but as we know, his relationship with Ellsabeth came to a crashing end. Though she continues to play a role in his life with their daughter Lucy caught in between. Lucy, is positively adorable! I love her and little Ray--Quen's daughter--together! They are the best of friends and quite the hyperactive toddlers! Seeing Trent play Mr. Mom with them was just darling! Though I was bummed when Ellsabeth came into the picture to ruin the happy family moments Trent, Rachel, and the girls had.
Though my memory was stretched pretty thin on all the details of the original series and its finale for that matter, I was able to get back into the grove of things pretty well. The introduction of less famous characters might have been a struggle for me. I was basically trying to remember if I met them before or not. It's possible they had pop-up appearances in the last book or two, but I was able to move through the story well enough with their new additions.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that whatever is causing the domestic attacks between couples soon targets Rachel and Trent, because of course it would target our favorite couple who were just on the verge of a happily ever after moment! What they need to figure out is what is causing these violent attacks and how to defeat it. It's going to take a lot of teamwork from them and their friends to get this issue resolved and the results are...well, let's just say jaw-dropping! I was not expecting that kind of ending from Kim in this first in a revival/continuation series!
American Demon has everything that I loved about the original series and more! This is pure Rachel gold! I only wish that she and Ivy and Jenks were working together a little more, but it seems fitting at the same time that they're not. As I mentioned before, the characters were moving onto their individual happily ever afters in the last book, so suffice to say that some characters were content with where things left off. But it's comforting to know that they are not entirely gone from the page!
I do want to add that it's probably a good idea to read the first series first. This series has a new title to it, making it somewhat separate from the original, but it's still the same world, same characters. There are mentions of past characters and dealings of events. So spoilers, you know? There's also the fact that you won't quite understand what little things mean, because no emphasis is placed on them but for a passing moment. You lose a lot of context if you don't understand why it's endearing that a two-year-old gives a peace-like sign with her fingers moving up and down! Highly recommend reading the first set of books before diving into this series. Kim Harrison's books is pure Urban Fantasy delight! Kim Harrison, in my opinion, is one of the founding authors of the genre and I am thrilled beyond relief that she is back in The Hollows! The rest of the series from here on out is going to be a blast!
Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars
American Demon releases June 16, 2020
Big fan of Kim Harrison's Hallow series. Thanks to #NetGalley and #BerkleyPublishing for letting me read #AmericanDemon
Another great book in the series. Honestly, I thought after the last book this series was done. Glad to see it isn't.
Perfect return to a series with all your favorite characters. Love seeing the gang back together, even if things have changed.
Can't wait to see what is next for Rachel and the gang.
Great book!
Okay, so first, if you've NOT read the Hollows series, READ THEM! READ THEM NOW!!
If you have, then OMG you're in for one incredible treat! What an amazing return to a beloved series and pretty much exactly what I was hoping for and SO much more! A new Demon to love/hate, love, heartache and a pretty nifty way to remind us all what went before if you're not up to re-reading the entire series before starting this up.
Rachel and Jenks and Co are back, and it was WELL worth the wait!
This series is a favorite of mine. I wasn't sure where the author would take this after the last book. I am very happy with this book and where the author is going with the story. I love that every book the author is able to create this empathy for the characters and that the story has twists and turns without being too off the original storyline.
Having thought this series had ended with the last book, I wondered where the author was going to take us with this one. I'm glad she kept the dynamic between Rachel and Trent; I think I would have stopped reading if she decided to end their relationship. They have experienced so much and changed so much since the first book that I would hate to see that lost. That being said, I probably should have reread the last book prior to this one in order to tweak my memory on some things. There were a few places where I had to think back to remember what had previously occurred. I like the addition of Hodin to Rachel's "family" and am hooked now because I need to know if Bis's soul can be returned to his body.
This was a really fun return back to the Hollows. Glad Harrison has skipped the queer baiting with Ivy and Rachel and focused in on Trent and Rachel.
