The Garden of Lost Memories by Ruby Hummingbird is a heartwarming and poignant novel about the power of friendship and forgiveness.
A heart warming story of friendship that tugged on my heart strings. Billy and Elsie made this a captivating read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Elsie and Billy are neighbors, and seemingly nothing alike. Elsie is 62 years old and Billy is 10 years old. However, underneath, both are hurting and end up helping each other. Elsie is struggling to come to terms with the death of her mother 28 years earlier and Billy is missing for his old life in London. Together they are able to come together and help each other heal. This is a lovely heartwarming story that will leave an imprint on your heart.
Thanks to Ruby Hummingbird, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the ARC.
A wonderful and beautifully emotional story.
Well written and exquisite.
It could have been a bit fast paced but still an invigorating read.
I absolutely adored this book. The characters were very relatable and the relationship that was built between them was powerful.
Would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a lovely heartedly read.
Looking forward to reading more books by this author.
I did not enjoy this one sadly. It did not hold my attention. I may just not have been in the right place at the time to properly read and enjoy this book.
This character driven novel shows the power of connection and community. I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship building, which showed the power of reaching out to others, and allowing oneself to be vulnerable.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exhange for an honest review.
I thought "The Garden of Lost Memories" by Ruby Hummingbird
was a well written & enjoyable story about ordinary people coming to terms with loss, loneliness, change, regret & memories.
I would definitely read another book by this author.
My heart is full and I feel renewed! What a poignant and uplifting story this was. Just one of those that makes you feel good about life. Not to say there weren't some melancholy moments, a twinge of sadness, regret. But that's just basically life. I don't think any of us get out of it without having those moments. And this story beautifully highlighted that and how it's easy to get lost in the heartache and forget to live. But when we remember to cherish those around us and examine our own lives and fears, life can be amazing!
A good read that is hard to put down and makes you feel good at the end when you have finished reading it.
I definitely did not expected to be so effected by this book! I laughed, I cried, I thought about it for weeks after I read it. Such an emotional and heartful read, very well written!
This is very much a heart warming and "feel good" book. Ideal when you need something positive which shows the good side of human nature as well as the bad. Yes, it is a bit twee in places but it is also well written and a good read.
62 year old Elsie is letting life slip away from her. She has her routines where she cleans the house, writes letters and has tea with custard creams. She is missing out on so much and is very old before her time. Into this serene, if very dull, life explodes Billy. The new little lad next door whose Mother is working every hour she can to pay the bills. A need for a babysitter brings these two together.
I really enjoyed this book. Although a "heart-warming" book it isn't all fluffy. There is some grit underneath which explores abusive relationships and child bullying. The characters are strong - Elsie is a woman who has let opportunities slip away & Billy is a typical little boy. Billy's Mother is a woman who has grit and determination to do what is best for her son. They are vibrant and well created.
You know this is going to end well - it is that sort of book. However, the path to the ending is well constructed and a good read.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
I loved loved LOVED this book! It was the sweetest story of two people, at very different stages in their life, creating a friendship and bond that will stay forever. I loved all the characters and connected with them deeply. The storyline was great and I was never sure what was going to happen next! Would read this author again happily.
The Garden of Lost Memories byRuby Hummingbird (great name) is a very entertaining story of an unlikely friendship. It will warm your heart and tickle your fancy. I found it a bit slow to start , but stayed with it and I was rewarded in the end. I recommend this sweet story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.
Sorry to say, after a promising synopsis and a lot of other good reviews, I had to DNF this book. Just from the prologue I hated to the writing, but I tried to give it a chance. With each chapter I completed it was so hard to keep focused, and I just didn't want to continue.
The writing is extremely choppy and very juvenile. I didn't even know what was really going on either, and I just couldn't get into it at all.
What a fun, beautiful, heartwarming book! Loved the setting and characters. Very enjoyable. What a brilliant, beautiful, feel-good, heartwarming book!
A story of how the unlikeliest of friendships just work, in the most unexpected of places and times. Ruby Hummingbird writes about a generational gap between sixty year old Elsie and her neighbour’s son, ten year old Billy.
Elsie, set in her ways, lives by her routines, until Billy and his mother move in next door. Billy has experienced an emotional upheaval; his mum has moved him away from his abusive father.
They strike up a friendship which can only be described as awkward at times, as Elsie babysits Billy. Whilst working in the garden, Billy finds an old tin with some hidden secrets in - these lead them on lots of adventures. As time goes on, this friendship blossoms - we see some funny, entertaining incidents and yet, some real tear jerking moments.
An emotional read, but one which celebrates the change in character of both Elsie and Billy.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review.
This is my favorite theme for a book. Multi-generational with all having their own problems and good qualities to add to the story. A little unusual that 10 year old Billie ties them all together but he is a good kid. His Mom has moved him to a small town to escape her abusive husband. Their new neighbor is 62 year old Elsie has withdrawn from society in her grief of losing her mother several years ago. A wonderful story of lost siblings, school bullying, friendship and love. Ruby has also written the Wish list of Albie Young which I enjoyed. She's a talented writer and I'll be looking forward to her next book. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Lovely story ,story of friendship between a young boy an elderly woman. .A book of life emotions relationships through generations..A book I read in one sitting a really wonderful read.#netgalley#bookouture
Two people that are so different from each other in age, appearance, interests, gender and personality have one thing in common - they are lonely, and not necessarily by choice. They are literally forced on each other, when Elsie agrees to watch her next door neighbours son during the day. Bit by bit they get to know each other better, enjoy Elsies garden, are angry at each other, go on adventurous outings together, have another falling-out, and help each other not being so lonely anymore.
The books starts quite slow, but presents two very interesting characters which I both liked to follow around. I actually imagined Elsie being much older than she really is at first, she seemed like an old lady.
The big secret connected to the red tin box, that is always hinted at, is not a really bad secret but rather an 'emotional' one. And it all plays out very nicely. Some things a bit too nicely and smooth for the realist in me. But all in all a very good read.
