** I received a copy of Mercenary's Daughter from Net Galley and Xpresso Book Tours (Acorn Publishing) in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions are my own and not solicited in any way**
Mercenary's Daughter by Jessica Therrien and Joe Gazzam was a fun action packed high adventure read set in Florida and Cuba. Be warned that this has a cliff hanger though so be prepared with that mentioned it's still worth a high 4 star rating. But I felt like it was reading both a thriller and a YA book nothing wrong with that though it just needed a bit more something to the Tara/Andy story line.
Tara Kafee has come home to her dad when she was given a dishonorable discharge from the Marines Special Ops with resentment to the world. But not everyone is happy to see her especially her little genius little brother Mitch. When their Dad gets a urgent but strange phone call Tara feels like something is off especially with Sasha whose his coworker. When they find out that Harry is missing they discover that his job isn't appliances but mercenary extraction. So off to Cuba they go in a stolen speed boat after sneaking into Havana they meet Andy who takes them on an adventure of their lives. They use cable cars, zip lines, scuba gear and one beauty of a 1955 Chevy Bel Air as transportation. Will the siblings take on a known gun and drug runner to save their dad? Because theirs one thing Tara knows and that knowledge of her military training may save all their lives including Andy.
Even though this is like a manuscript for a B-movie, the writing and the characters are good enough to make this good entertainment. Filled with action at a great pace, and I can live with errors like "rack a chamber".
This book was definitely not what I had expected. I was annoyed if not angry at the usage of "exotic" on Andy, so let's just say "The Mercenary's Daughter" did not leave a great first impression. However, plot-wise, it really amazed me. It was exciting and made my heart thump.
Tara and Mitch were the ultimate sibling team with Tara being familiar with weaponry and missions while Mitch excelled at science and schemes. Along with Andy, the local guide and an enemy of the enemy, their Cuban adventure of rescuing Harry was thrilling to read.
There were a lot of stealing, hijacking, and shooting in the book, but all of them were necessary evils. I appreciated Tara as a strong female character. I also really liked Mitch, the smart teen. During the Cuban trip, Tara and Mitch were figuring out what it meant to be a family, and it was honestly touching to see them ultimately working together. With the life of Harry, their dad, at stake, the siblings had to learn to trust each other again.
I admit the many plans of Tara, Mitch and Andy were risky at best, but most schemes were smart. That made the book captivating.
Though a quick read, "The Mercenary's Daughter" is not a simple book. It was exciting in every way. I am sure there is a sequel to this book, and I look very much forward to a full story of the Kafee family. In addition, I really hope Tara would be able to speak up about her "dishonourable discharge." Maybe both would be present in the next book, if there is one. I cannot wait.
This was a fun read. I felt like I was watching an action movie.
Tara is an ex-marine and sets out to save her dad when no one else will. She reluctantly brings her brother who she feels she will have to protect but soon finds she has a partner instead.
With bad guys at every turn and missteps all around, Tara, Mitch, and Andy have their work cut out for themselves but I was turning each page waiting for the next exciting moment.
An easy read and I look forward to the next mission they must complete!
Moving outside the box to provide us with an unusual action hero, the author does and excellent job of proving enough background/foundation then moving on to a non-stop action thriller which definitely entertains.
I loved the bad ass main character! I read this book in one sitting because it was so good. Anyone who likes strong main characters and action will love this book. I will be recommending it to the teens at my library.
This novel was an enjoyable read about a kick-ass woman who was dishonorably discharged from the Marines. You will have to read the novel to find out why. Tara Kafee is a strong and determined woman, who made some bad choices as a teen and saw the military as her only option, and now is trying to rekindle her relationship with her father and brother while figuring out what she should do with her life. The Kafee family has some issues and secrets, which are discovered when Tara's dad goes missing. Tara and her brother, Mitch, have to travel to Cuba to rescue their dad before it is too late. They learn more about what their father does, and also begin to mend their relationship. From guns and fights, to a mysterious contact, to car and boat chases, Tara and Mitch are willing to do whatever it takes to save their father and finish the mission he started.
The Mercenary’s Daughter is a fast packed adventure story which had me gripped and wanting more.
The lengths which were taken to save their father was beyond amazing and really had me turning the pages.
Highly recommend reading for adventure and mystery plus highly likeable characters.
