looking forward to her next book
I absolutely loved this book. I have been a fan of Jenifer Weiner since her first book many years ago. I know I can count on her to write a story that captures my attention and makes me sad to close the book when I have reached the end. This story follows Daphne, a plus-sized influencer who is realizing her own worth in a world filled with people who judge her based on her size. The book opens with an explanation of the incident that caused the end of her friendship with her best friend, Drue. From there, we see what happens when said fiend reaches out and asks Daphne to be in her wedding. As Daphne grapples with this decision....an unexpected tragedy occurs and the book really takes off from there. I didn't expect the turn of events but I loved it!! It reminds me of Goodnight, Nobody. 100% would recommend!!
Thank you NetGalley! I've read all of Jennifer Wiener's books. This one DID NOT disappoint! The character Daphne can be all of us! Reading Daphne's journey on her self image and watching her grow through lessons learned in life is all of us! In this book, Daphne has a "best friend" Drue who she thinks has it all. Drue is the it girl, but Daphne learns that all of that isn't what it seems. In the book you see Daphne search for answers for herself and her best friend. A must read!
I was expecting a light romcom. After the prologue, I realized that wasn’t what I was going to read. Then, I started Part 1 and thought I’d gotten my books confused... this WAS a light romcom. I even went back twice to read the prologue. I couldn’t tie the two together. THEN, Part 2 started - now it was a mystery! I have to say this book kept me guessing the whole time. I never saw the end coming. It was a really good book. I can say it is a strong 4 star book for me.
I was SO excited when I saw Jennifer Weiner's name come across my search, she has been one of my favorite authors since "Good in Bed". The storyline was so different from her previous novels and I loved it. The first half of the book follows Daphne as she builds her social media brand after a huge fallout with her best friend from high school. When her former bestie, Drue, walks back into her life 6 years later... I did not expect the next turn of events. This book will have you guessing until the very end, it will be a hit this summer!
I was so excited to receive an email from Atria Books inviting me to read Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner! I've been a fan of Weiner's since In Her Shoes. Last year's Mrs. Everything was one of my favorite books of 2019. Big Summer didn't disappoint! I devoured this book in three days.
Daphne Berg is an Instagram influencer in her mid-twenties. She's plus size and proud of it...most of the time. Weiner does an excellent job of exploring what it's like to be bigger than most in a world obsessed with image. Daphne started on her Insta journey thanks to her BFF from high school, Drue Cavanaugh. Drue is the golden girl with everything and often treats even her friends like crap. When she turns on Daphne their friendship is over. Until several years later when Drue returns asking Daphne to be her maid of honor.
This book was hard to pin down to a genre and I loved that! It starts with a prologue that will have you double checking the book description. Then is goes into the story you're expecting until it takes a twist that surprised me! I can usually see a plot twist coming from a mile away, but this one was not obvious. It then changes from a chick lit type tale to something more sinister.
I don't want to give away anymore of the plot. I think this will be a big hit (pun intended) this summer! I do enjoy how the turn of events made Daphne realize that it's not the worst thing in the world to have your biggest problem be what the number on the scale is. As a large girl myself I know how easy it is to get wrapped up the pity party of being large. But if the reader pays attention Daphne may not be slim, but she's obviously fit - walking all over NYC and taking 90 minute yoga classes. You can workout, eat right, and still remain considerably overweight. I'm sure there will be readers who disagree with me about this and that's fine. I love Weiner's real portrayal of women and this book continues that legacy.
Thank you again to Netgalley/Atria Books for this ARC!
Jennifer Weiners latest novel about a plus size influencer is a modern story, dealing with real life struggles with weight and body acceptance. Meet Daphne. Plus size Instagram Influencer, relatable, good friend and daughter. Meet Drue. Former best friend of Daphne, aspiring Influencer, beautiful, educated and wealthy. This murder mystery meets love story has the twists and turns of a thriller, yet has the happily ever after Jennifer Weiner is known for. 4 stars.
Jennifer Weiner has perfected the art of chick lit. Romancey fluff, girlfriend dramas, family issues...she’s done it all. This newest one, though, stretches her reach even farther.
Daphne and Drue are as different as can be. Drue is a trust fund baby, beautiful and thin and perfect in every way. Daphne comes from a working class family and has always struggled with accepting her body the way it is. Once friends, now not so much due to Drue's mean-girl tendencies. It’s been years since they’ve been in contact when out of the blue, Drue asks Daphne to be her maid of honor. Daphne is torn. She remembers how Drue treated her but at the same time is unable to resist a Drue's charm. She gets much more than she bargained for, however...
Full of drama, generous with humor, and reading true to life, another great read from this author!
I just loved this story. I loved the social media aspect and how it affects people. The characters were fantastic. My new favorite!
Hurts me to do this but I’ve gotta give it 3 stars. Three and a half. It’s a fine book but Jennifer Weiner isn’t a fine writer, she’s exceptional! Mrs Everything was great but All Fall Down is phenomenal. I digress....It was a funny, light read with a little mystery thrown in. I guess I like to fully commit to a genre, not a little murder & a little love story. It’s not as deep as the author clearly delves. As I said, it’s a pretty good read, I was just expecting more🤷🏼♀️ Focused a lot on her ex-BFF & body size, obsessively really BUT I’m sure others will enjoy it, hopefully more than I did.
Another great book from Jennifer Weiner!
The story kept me wanting to read more and stay up late to see what happened! With that said, I just finished her book, Mrs. Everything right before this one, and couldn’t help comparing them. The story in this book has a main character who you just can’t help from disliking, and I felt sometimes that I couldn’t tell if the main plot was about size acceptance or a mystery. It was a fun book to read, and went by quickly, and I’m sure it will be all over the beach this summer.
Drue was the popular girl in high school and Daphne was trying to fit in. Years later, Daphne still feels the Drue's rejection; however, out of the goodness of Daphne's heart, she forgave Drue and agreed to be in Drue's wedding.
This is a story about forgiveness in a tangible world of female friendships. This story was extremely slow in development and not very interesting. At times, the story didn't move at all. The characters were going in circle. It's not until the last five chapters that things started to move forward and get interesting. There is something lacking in the story that makes it stand out. Weiner's last story Mrs. Everything was amazing. The ending was not surprising. I thought this story fell short.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love Jennifer Weiner, so I was excited to read this one. I found it to be a fun and quick read. She addresses a few complicated issues like body image and social media influence that make for a more layered and interesting read. About halfway through it was starting to get a bit slow, and then quickly turned into a mystery which helped pick up the pace. The transition was a bit abrupt but overall it worked and I would definitely recommend.
Thanks to #netgalley and Atria books for an arc of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
I love Jennifer Weiner books. My daughter loves them too That being said the book was very enjoyable. A Bit of a slow start. Then it picked up and I really related to the characters. Thank you for allowing me to read the advance copy
I loved Mrs. Everything and was so excited to read Big Summer. They're totally different books, but I loved Big Summer, too. I could totally relate to Daphne and I found myself both laughing and crying. I read this book in a day because I really just wanted to know who did it. I couldn't put it down for long! I highly recommend this book to others!
I really enjoyed Big Summer. It reminded me of The Perfect Couple, by Elin Hildebrand, in setting and style. Her fans will definitely want to read this book.
Big Summer started a little slow as the characters were introduced, and I learned their backgrounds. There was a lot of detail on who wore what, where & when. But it didn’t take long before the story picked up & I was taking my kindle with me everywhere, in hopes of finding 5-10 minutes to read the next chapter.
The plot kept me guessing and eager to finish. I was genuinely surprised in the end and will happily recommend this book to anyone who need a fun, summer read.
I woke up this morning at 65% into the book and finished it today! Even though it's a Saturday and I'm a mom and a wife, with a million things I should be doing, this book had to be finished before anything else got done. And it was worth it - enough said! :) Thank you to Atria Books. Simon & Schuster, Inc. and NetGalley for an Advanced Copy for an honest review. This book will be released on 5-19-2020.
Big Summer has complicated friendships, tension between haves and have-nots, successful chubby girls, and all the usual Jennifer Weiner ingredients, oh yeah, plus a murder.
When a horrible moment goes viral, Daphne turns her accidental fame into a side hustle as a plus-size Instagram influencer. This is prime Jennifer Weiner fiction, about a chubby girl turning her setbacks into success.
Daphne thinks she's put high school behind her, until Drue Lanthrop Cavannagh, the A-list mean girl and sometime friend, turns up at her doorstep. Drue's asking, no, begging Daphne to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. It seems her mean-girl ways have left her with a bridesmaid space to fill, and an old friend from high school would round out her picture-perfect life. This is also prime Jennifer Weiner fiction, with complex female friendships, but slightly updated with an Instagram influencer slant.
Dashni, another former classmate, is now Daphne’s roommate. Dashni loathes Drue, remembering how Drue routinely embarrassed her in high school. She also remembers Drue picking up and dropping Daphne whenever she felt like it, and she's not really pleased to see Daphne running off at Drue's command again. This is also perfect Jennifer Weiner fiction, with loyal friends, especially enjoying takeout and trash TV together.
Actually, the whole thing is everything I loved in Good in Bed, Mrs. Everything, and Jennifer Weiner fiction in general, right until the murder. Outside the murder, the story continues to be secret-revealing, body-posi adventure, taking readers around New York and the Cape to investigate, but also traveling in Daphne's memories. Twists and updates, without losing the elements we all love in Jennifer Weiner fiction.
The first half of this book is like chick lit, evolving into mystery in the second half. This is a very good read but the transition doesn't quite work. What does work is the story of an internet influencer who is plus size and her struggles and relationshipsships. I wish Weiner would have stuck with this formula throughout instead of becoming an okay whodunit. Weiner captures the soul of the plus size protagonist and creates a world one can relate to.

I would read anything written by Jennifer Weiner (and I have!). While this wasn't one of my favorite book's she's written, I did enjoy it and found it to be a quick read. I thought the plot was quite timely with our nation's obsession with reality shows and social media. Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the advanced copy.
