A dark domestic thriller full of secrets and lies.
The people of the town were very unlikeable but something I can imagine it being like in a small town.
It took me a while to get into this one me, mainly because I thought it was a thriller. When I realised it wasn't and changed my expectations, I was drawn into the plot. I didn't find it overly emotional but it was a good read with an interesting set of characters.
to read this book thanks to NetGalley. This was my first book from this author but it won’t be the last for me. It did not disappoint and I loved it. It was fast paced and exciting snd it kept me guessing until the end! This one is a must read for all thriller fans. I will be recommending this book to all of my friends. I will be looking out for other books from this author in the future. Thanks again to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Thea and her childhood sweetheart Drew see that Thea’s old home, Pevensey House, is up for sale. Thea instantly knows she has to have it and sees it as a chance to escape their busy London life and the opportunity to return to a place that give her many happy childhood memories. Drew is reluctant at first, but with a hope their children will experience happiness there as well. However, soon after they move in, Thea feels unsettled and finds a hidden panel in the world which uncovers startling information. She finds out her husband lied to her and her happy childhood town is not at all what it seemed to be.
I found the book, while pretty good, to be a bit slow moving. It was a bit predictable and more of a domestic drama than a thriller but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Thanks to Emma Davies, Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.
Overall this was just an ok read for me. It was engaging enough that I kept going, but overall it fell flat. It really wasn’t a psychological thriller, and frankly, the titling is misleading. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was looking forward to reading this, but unfortunately, I found it a little flat, not enough dramatic twists and turns for me. A little too predictable.
Unfortunately, this one wasn't at all what I expected. Personally, I think part of the issue is a slightly misleading synopsis - I went into it expecting a thriller, perhaps of the psychological variety, and instead got a domestic drama. A good one, yes, but still not really what I wanted.
The writing is strong, and the characterisation was well done. The author deals with complex topics including bullying, disability, and child abuse without veering into the realm of exploiting any of these topics. However, the 'small village' vibe did feel rather overdone and a bit dramatic, which made the realism of the book a bit of a challenge.
All in all, as far as domestic dramas go, it was ok. There was a bit of mystery, although the ending was a bit too easy for me to guess at, and the setting was pretty. But the 'drama' element of the novel quickly became repetitive, meandering and overly dramatic, and so it wasn't really my cup of tea.
3.5 rounded down to 3.
Disclaimer - I was fortunate enough to receive an advance reading copy of this book from the publisher in conjunction with NetGalley. This has not affected my review in any way, and all opinions are my own.
Such a good read. I cried, I gasped, I stared in awe. It was a thriller, laced with emotion, topped off with unexpected twists. Would definitely recommend!
When Thea sees her childhood home, Pevensey, is up for sale she sees it as an opportunity to leave the London rat race. She also wants to return to her idyllic childhood which she sees as those eleven years at Pevensey with her best friend (now husband), Drew, living next door.
As everyone knows life doesn't always go to plan & it is hard to go back to recreate something from the past. Thea encounters events from her past that she didn't know existed. Did Drew?
I liked the idea of this book but I felt in a few places it just didn't quite make the mark. There were just a few too many twists and turns of behaviour. Did I believe that a whole village would blindly believe one woman? Did I believe that Mothers didn't talk amongst themselves & discover that their child wasn't the only one being bullied? Did I really believe that a Mother would stay quiet about the effects of bullying on her child so as not to rock the boat? I wasn't convinced by any of these. Yes, each of them to a small amount but not to the extent that happened here - not even in a small village. I felt that things were just a little off the mark. A shame as the book had some good characters and did seek to tackle the idea of bulling for both adults and children.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
Thank you to Netgalley and Emma Davies for my copy of My Husband’s Lie. When Thea finds her daily home, up for sale, she can’t help but want to move back. To the quiet village she remembers and to the home she adored. When Drew agrees to move from London to the village, things start to get strange. Memories for Thea and rumors from the village makes Thea regret her making the move. Will the memories cause to many problems? Will Thea face the past? Will her husband’s lie, ruin it all? This story had me guessing and wanting to see how things ended. It was a four star read for me and I have recommended it to friends & family.
The story starts out on an intriguing note but is very slow and meandering for the rest of the book.
I was expecting a nice thriller but the book could more correctly be categorized as a drama instead.
Also, the title is not very relevant to the story itself.
The writing is pretty neat and the story reminded me of Big, Little Lies By Liane Moriarty because of the new place-new school-mom gangs-kind of vibe, but the similarities end there as the plot in this one actually fizzled out disappointingly.
But I still needed to know what was going on in the story so it did keep me hooked and there’s that.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review.
I'm not normally a fan of contemporary fiction but if it has a little mystery thrown into it, then you can usually sell it to me. MY HUSBAND'S LIE by Emma Davies is my first by this author and it did not disappoint. This domestic drama is tinged with suspense and packed with secrets, rumours and a lot of lies.
Thea and Drew are excited to return to the village in which they grew up, not only for the village but for the house that Thea where all her childhood memories are nothing but happy ones. And now Thea just knows that Pevensey House is the perfect place to raise her family and where her girls, Chloe and Lauren, will thrive away from the choking pollution and snarling traffic of London. It is somewhere safe to grow up...or at least that's what they thought.
Upon their arrival, Thea befriends neighbours Anna and Rob who now live in Rose Cottage where Drew and his family once did. They have a young daughter Tilly who is the same age as Lauren and the two girls hit it off immediately. Born with a congenital deformity, Tilly only has one arm but it doesn't dissuade her from life. But it does make her a target for bullies at school. And when one such bully victimises Tilly in the playground, Lauren immediately jumps to her defence...punching the boy and bringing herself attention to the school's head teacher.
But the victimising doesn't end there. Nor does it end with Tilly or Lauren. Soon Thea finds herself the subject of malicious gossip when an incident that took place when she was just a child is thrust at her doorstep and she is left to question everything about her childhood as she knew it. Was it all just a lie?
When Thea confides in Drew she is shocked to learn that he knew about it already! So why did he not tell her? Why keep it from her? Had she known would she have been so ready to move back here? And if he has kept this from her all these years, what else has he kept from her? Thea thought she knew him...but does she know him at all?
When Thea decides to take matters into her own hands to show the other parents that she was not afraid of their malicious lies, things only end up worse - for both her and for Anna. How can Thea to make things right for them both now? And without Drew in her corner how can she to get through this?
MY HUSBAND'S LIE is filled to the brim of gossipy mums and a judgemental village. Who needs Twitter or Facebook or WhatsApp when you have the village grapevine to stir up trouble? But more than that, the story also focuses on the power of friendship and it reminds us of the power that our words can have on others. And whatever may have happened, whether there was any truth to the rumours, there are always families of those left behind that will feel the aftershock in the ripples that remain in tragedy's wake. Sadly these are collateral damage in the fallout...but they are also innocent. But the gossip-mongers do not think of that when they spread their vicious lies...and the hurt they may cause.
The story unfolds solely in Thea's narrative - with Drew's voice included in the prologue and the epilogue - MY HUSBAND'S LIE is not a whodunit but it there is an element of mystery with a touch of suspense. And a whole load of colourful characters that make up the sterling cast in a small-minded village in a sleepy corner of Shropshire.
A rather good read that I found surprisingly enjoyable, despite its slow start, MY HUSBAND'S LIE is addictive and somewhat compelling to uncover the truth. And thankfully, there is a kind of closure to the mystery behind the village gossip, which made for a satisfying end.
I would like to thank #EmmaDavies, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #MyHusbandsLies in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a powerful read! I loved the whole story, from going home again to the intrigue of why she wasn't welcomed. It was hard to put this book down. With strong characters and great writing this should be a best seller this summer!
I enjoyed this story so much, much more than I thought I would. Emma Davies is one of my new favorite authors, and I can't wait to read another fantabulous read by a very talented author.

I would recommend this story to all thriller lovers .This book took me by surprise. It kept me interested throughout the story and I needed to see what was going to happen. I truly enjoyed the pacing of the story and the well written characters.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would at about 1/4 of the way through. The book gathered pace again about 2/3 of the way through and, while I found the ending frustrating, it was appropriate to the characters. Definitely worth a read.
Thank you to both NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this ARC. I really liked the characters and storyline. This is my first book my Emma Davies, and I'm in love with her writing. It was a quick, easy read and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this Arc.
I absolutely love Emma Davies books.
This one was slightly different. I was a dark suspenseful one.
It was extremely enjoyable and I would highly recommend it.
A first for me by this author and I wasn’t disappointed- it’s an enjoyable read!
For me, the genre of this book is more of a family drama than a psychological thriller, but a good read all the same. Be warned that It should come with a trigger warning, due to sensitive topics such as bullying and child abuse.
Initially, the first part of the story was hard to get into. It follows the protagonists of Thea and Drew (husband and wife) who move into Thea’s old, childhood home. Moving back home isn’t what they expected - it’s worse than expected - they experience hostility and unwelcoming behaviour from old friends and locals. But why?
A story with lots of twists and turns and well developed characters. A great read during lockdown.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely not a thriller but still a good read.
This took a long time to get going. That’s really my only complaint. I liked the writing, characters and premise. This story does cover a couple of sensitive topics which some may find upsetting. I really enjoyed the relationship between Thea and Drew.
This story does contain sensitive topics that some may find upsetting (child molestation, bullying). I would recommend this if you are in the market for a family drama. I will check out more by this author.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for a review.
